Elden Ring (From Software RPG)

initially I jumped on the bandwagon that the RT implementation was poor...but after looking at some screenshots now I see that it's actually pretty impressive (especially since it's only RT shadows and AO)...not all areas will benefit from RT but the areas that do are really a nice improvement...it's too bad about the performance hit and lack of DLSS

these are not my screenshots but they do a good job of showing the differences between RT On/Off...

Yeah it does help to tie objects to the ground and makes vegetation look a lot better. Too bad it kills my 2080ti. 30-45 fps; doesn't seem to matter if it's RT Low or RT Max the performance is just too low until they add DLSS/FSR.

Well, I was going by these screenshots (judging by my eyes and not some random on the internet):

There's more than just shadows and ambient occlusion going on there. There is some significant light tweaking, unless the user taking the screenshots doctored them?
The time of day/sun position in Elden Ring is constantly moving. Its difficult to get screenshots with the exact same lighting conditions. However, it can be done. This person apparently didn't feel like taking the time to do it.

The only real improvement, is that shadows are better quality/more stable. Which can be a big deal when there are a lot of trees.

IMO, it would be worthwhile for From to simply added an even higher quality shadows and/or AO option. As even "max" quality has had issues with trees and objects on the ground, etc. And it would likely perform better than Ray Tracing.

This has been my argument with adding RT to games post-launch that don't really need it. Everyone seems to be so "Let's add RT to all the things!" gung-ho these days.

Atomic Heart is probably the best example to date. The AH devs did such a good job using traditional techniques that, in my opinion, adding RT at this point is just a waste of time. If AH was meant to have RT, it would have been there at the design stages from the very beginning, thus shipped. At the end of the day, the AH devs could use that time improving the game via a myriad of other ways. In any event, that's what I choose to believe.

To be clear, this type of tacking on RT is a lot different than upgrading a game that came out 10-20 years ago where RT actually has a chance to prove its worth. Literally modernizing an old game by adding path tracing does wonders. So I'm totally on board with that concept.

RT shadows and AO are much more realistic which makes the small things really stand out...in the images I posted above just look at things like the underside of the shield in the first image which is now more realistically lit...the shadows underneath foliage close to the player also show a huge improvement as far as realistic shadows...is it a night/day difference?...no...and it does require a lot of standing around to notice the differences but when you do you can see just how much better it looks

RT also helped eliminate most of the shimmering...take a look at this short video with RT Off/On which shows it well...enlarge the video to see it clearly...

Yeah. and what I'm saying is, those things can be fixed and made to look nearly as good, without Ray Tracing. I haven't seen shadows as shimmery and bad, since the PS3 days.

Not worth the fps or chugging imo. Also seems a bit more blurry, maybe they'll tune it up some, more excited for the DLC.

Yeah RT is pointless for this title to me. I realized recently though that this game supports HDR lol, made a huge difference on the oled, generally looks super washed out without it.

I’ve beaten this game to absolute death but I’ll do it all over again when the DLC releases. Going to try and forget all about it in the mean time.

From Software is just using Elden Ring to test out RT...same way that Sekiro was the first test title for HDR...I'm sure their next game (Armored Core VI) will make even better use of RT

I played around with it on my PC and it's weird. One second things will be fine, and the next it'll start to get oddly bogged down. It doesn't relate to anything (visible) onscreen necessarily, either. Plus, I think that the "natural" shadows don't necessarily match with the look of the game. The rest of the game is otherwise pretty sharp, so they feel almost out of place. Whenever I go back to the game, probably when the DLC launches, I'm going to leave it off.

no RT shadow casting from torches or bonfires is disappointing...missed opportunity which would have made a noticeable difference in the visuals
I don't even know why they bothered with RT, if that is the best they can do.

Clearing my shader cache fixed a lot of my stuttering.

edit: until you log into other zones, ugh...

Can I parry big enemies attacks? How do not get pumelled? Roll?
Depends on the attack, some can be parried, some cannot, some have a larger window which makes it an easy parry, and some have a smaller window which makes it a lot more difficult.
Make sure you are not 'fat rolling' - if you wear too much heavy equipment your roll will be slow and clunky. Mid roll you have i-frames (invincibility frames where you don't take damage) so you can roll into an enemy attack, then punish afterwards. Don't get greedy swinging like a maniac, pay attention to your stamina.
Dying is part of the game.

RT is the current "buzz". It's the next thing everyone needs to have - so much so that they'll drop $1000+ on a GPU for those precious ray-traced shadows and reflections (in a few other games). Conveniently, these RT features are implemented specifically at the level that it's intensive to run them even with the best hardware. I mean, lose half your FPS (or more) for marginally improved shadows, why not? It's the usual spirit of the industry.

This is [H]ardForum- it's what turns us on. A place for crazy enthusiasts that always want to be on bleeding edge - no matter how ridiculous this may look to the rest.

Before RT was even a thing it was common to lose half of your FPS for marginally improved shadows. Just about everything was that way. Anisotropic Filtering? Too expensive. Tessellation? Slideshow. Anti-aliasing? Forget about it.

The Witcher 2 had an AA mode that destroyed the best GPUs at the time. I wonder if it's usable now?

Ubersampling. Last time I tried it was with my GTX Titan X and it still wasn't playable at 2560x1440. I should try it on my 4090. I saw people with a 1080 were only getting 30-40 FPS with it on.

Patch 1.09.1 released

After last month's 1.09 update for From Software's hit title, the team has now rolled out a hotfix that packs some bug fixes and balance adjustments...

Gameplay changes and bug fixes

-Fixed a bug where the effects of some Skills, Incantations, Items and Weapons that increased attack power were not applied to Spells and Incantations
-Fixed a bug where the Skill Contagious Fury from the Jellyfish Shield kept increasing attack power when unequipping the shield or switching to a different weapon
-Decreased the poise damage of the Cursed-Blood Slice Skill

Malenia in 15 Seconds with Bandit's Curved Swords | NG+7 World Record

That jumping double attack (and most of the same gear he's using) = what I used to pile on the damage, too. I just went with the RoB instead. I might have to play around with those swords, too.

my guess was always Feb/March 2024 as that's when From Software always releases their big Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro titles

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree may Not Release Before April 2024

Earlier today, Kadokawa Corporation (From Software's parent company) released its latest financial report, which includes a full-year forecast for the gaming segment...in this forecast, the Japanese company mentions that the decrease in sales and profit of the first quarter will be offset by the second quarter of the current fiscal year and onward by Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon (along with some other mobile titles)

The Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion is mentioned only in the medium to long-term direction section, and the fact that the sales and profits it will bring were not included in the forecast for the current fiscal year seems to suggest it will not release before April 2024 at the earliest

Elden Ring just keeps winning awards...Elden Ring has won the 2023 Nebula Award for best writing for a video game...this is the first Nebula Award given to Hidetaka Miyazaki and From Software and the third Nebula Award given to George R.R. Martin...

Don't get me wrong Elden Ring is one of my favorite games all time but an award for the writing? Too obtuse for me. Give me an Elden Ring game with the writing and characters of Jedi Survivor and you have the perfect game.

Idk man, while I don't necessarily disagree, I think there was quite a bit more writing than it would appear on the surface, it's just simply not laid out like we're used to (chronologically... or, perhaps even logically). After multiple playthroughs it became at least somewhat less cryptic and convoluted than it did at first. If you're into the lore you just have to pay attention and make an effort to put the pieces together. I mean.. I didn't, and probably couldn't anyway, but some seem to have the ability.

tomorrow's the big night- the Dorito Pope Gaming Show aka Summer Game Fest...hopefully we get a new Shadow of the Erdtree trailer along with a release date...but I actually don't think they will show anything as I'm sure From Software doesn't want to overshadow the Armored Core VI game coming out in August

I'm still holding out hope for a Shadow of the Erdtree date announcement trailer at the Tokyo Game Show (even though the Game Awards in December is the more likely option)

Is it still capped at 60fps?
Yes

And the mods to unlock it seem to have been broken at some point, by one of the game updates. They still work. But, with two different framerate mods; the game has a string of stutters, every 10 - 20 seconds. You can notice it by simply standing and looking at the glowing lights from a Site of Grace.

And this is why i'll never play it. 60fps is a no-can-do for me personally.

Why? Is it actually causing you physical distress like headaches or something?

Or is it a psychological "I paid thousands of dollars for this hardware and I refuse to deal with peasant frame rates" kind of thing?
