Temps are relative and meaningless, but the CNPS9500 probably gives you a 4 degree edge over a Zalman 7000. You don’t need to take out the whole rail for it to fit, either.

It depends on the CPU, I wanted to use my FX-55 Clawhammer CPU in the Micro Fly. I needed a better better performing CPU cooler like the 9500 or NT06, so the CPU would not overheat and shut the system down under heavy gaming load.

Where do you find this case? What is a reasonable price since I have only been able to find barebones kits for $600+
Tigerdirect was the only place I could find it in the US (My review system was provided by XFX)

Edit - XFX barebone is available at newegg now also

Too rich for my blood. 600 bones for a 400 watt PS and a MB I do not like.

I hope they market the case alone.

I was thinking about getting the Blue Orb for my E6400 I have the same case. Looking at these pics it appears to fit nicely, but did you have to mod/do anything extra to get it in and working? I cant tell. I'm not sure if it will slide back into the case once I attach it. Just wondering.

No mods required, you can slide it in attached to the mobo / Tray.

I have also installed from the top down by removing the PSU to get to the inside screw. Depending on the CPU mounting bracket (S-939) used, you can get alot of flex from the mobo. I ended up using an aluminum S-939 mount from one of my Asus ATX MB's.

It seems you can fit a 7900gtx even with the Hard drives in plcae. You would have to take the HD out if you want to put the 8800GTX in there... would you also have to cut a bit of the 5.25 as well?

You have some really like sff's. Thanks for showing them.

I tried the 8800GTX in my QMICRA and it fit nicely, so I installed a second 8800GTX in SLI and then proceeded to stress the system to check cooling performance and was very impressed.

The 8800GTX power connectors interfere with the 5 1/2 bay in the Micro Fly and I assume the Q-pack as well! I had to dremel out a small section to get them to fit.

I just saw this thread and wanted to say what a beautiful job you've done. This should be required reading for anyone planning a SFF build.
LOL it could have saved me hundreds of trial and error hours on my CrossFlow comp.

Beautiful Work  Mark

This case is not made by XFX, its made buy a company called scan computers in the uk. there showreoom is located in manchester, and the case is called 3XS Isotope.

here are some of the others they do http://www.scan.co.uk/shops/isotope/?_s_icmp=shiso

Actually the XFX case was originally made by http://www.pype.net
(however their link now forwards to http://www.invasion.fr and it looks like they have several new case designs!)

correct. infact the case IS made by pype (a french company) however as far as my knowlage go's scan are the 1st company to distribute there case (as was there contract with pype),as i do my reserch ferther it seam that pype are producing these cases to other companies (such as XFX). you can always tell by the round logo in the front center of the case who has there badge on the "Isotope" case =]

Dam fine cases though, regardless of who resells them =]

Dworley, which case is on this desk? I think it's the perfect size for me.

ST20G5.jpg

It's a Shutte G5 case - model SN21G5 with an optional Shuttle Mesh case cover

There are various Shuttle barebone models available at newegg and ZZF that support AMD or Intel CPU's

So I cant decide if I want to build an mATX box or tower at this point. I was looking over your pictures and I like several of these cases so far (off of purely looks of course).

-Shuttle SN26P
-Shuttle SN25P
-Silverstone SG01-B Evolution
-SN21G5

Those are the ones I am interested in. I have a few questions though. First off where can you purchase most of these. I am having the hardest time finding anything for the shuttles especially for an E4300. Barebones, case only, doesnt matter just something to see what the prices are on these.

Out of the ones listed above:
1) Which allow for pull size video cards without modification to the case
2) Which has the best cooling
3) Which will ultimately have the most overclocking potential base on the Mobo they come with (If they do indeed come with one) and of course the cooling or ability add decent fans.

Which would you recommend for someone looking to build either an E4300-E4400 base computer with a higher end video card (X19XX series or maybe 8800GTS)?

If you are looking to overclock a C2D E4300 and want to use a high end video card - there is really only one good choice currently.

I would suggest the SG01 with an Abit Fatality F-I90HD. I easily overclocked my C2D E4300 to 3.06ghz (9x340) with this setup in my Fragbox (which is essentially an SG01)

I would also recommend the Silverstone NT06 Lite CPU cooler. One of the SFF forum regulars has his own store and stocks most of the items you would need! SFFSTORE.COM

Did you have any trouble installing the NT06 on the F-190HD board, I can't tighten the screw next to the northbridge, fingers won't fit. Did you take off the NB cooler to install it?

My hands are pretty large and I was able to get to it with at least two fingers to tighten down that screw. Juts be careful not to over tighten or it will rip the black base off from the hold down plates by the two small screw threads.

What about the MicroFly MX6 w/600W XVS PSU. That looks like a fairly large case with decent cooling and a decent PSU. How would that compare to the SG01?

The cooling is definitely better on the MX6, it's a personal preference as to the styling and aesthetics that appeal to you vs. cooling performance. My Fragbox runs hotter than just about any other case but I really like the styling and high quality brushed aluminum finish with the windows.

I like the SGO1 but there is one thing I hate. That face plate should be flush with the top of the box, that little hump annoys me for some reason.

In terms of overall build quality how does the SGO1 compare to the MX6? Would you happen to have a size comparison.

What is the reason for the better cooling on the MX6? I thought the SGO1-E had new and improved cooling.

Do you happen to have reviews for the MX6, either by you or anyone else. I cannot find anything.

Are the SFF's noisier than a normal tower?

It depends on the fans that come with the SFF case, the PSU fan and yoru choice of CPU cooler. All of these can be changed out for quiet fans, as I have done so with all of my systems. Components in an SFF system can overheat quicker than a tower so you just have to test your cooling performance thoroughly.

The SG01 Build quality is definitely better in my opinion, there are numerous reviews of the MicroFly which is identical to the MX6 for internals (the only difference is the faceplate) The Microfly cools somewhat more effectively than the SG01 as it has a 120mm fan directly above and behind the CPU cooler.

If you use a video card with a double slot cooler that exhausts out the rear of the case - this will help significantly with cooling as well!

The SG01-E is only slightly better at cooling than the older SG01. By using an NT06 passive CPU cooler (which is made to fit perfectly in height and directly below the PSU fan) the cooling performace is excellent.

Here's a few pics with the SG01-E and Micro Fly:

So I was looking at more of your cases and came across your thread on the X-Gene mini. That case looks outstanding and seems to have the best cooling of all of them. What are your opinions on the X-gene? You seemed to like it and everything seemed to fit without modification. Were there any downsides? It looks like it may be on the large side of SFF but I am willing to deal with that for improved cooling.

any comments?

The X-Gene is a really nice case and has very good cooling performance, but it is rather large and heavy for an SFF case.

My preference is for smaller, more compact cases and my favorites right now are the Shuttle G5 and Fragbox2 cases.

Reviving this awesome thread to ask dworley sumpin.

On the MicroFly that you modified to fit the BIG BOY Zalman, did you do any reinforcing to was was left of the material under the hard drives to compensate for the reduced support? I want to do the same thing, mainly so I can see the CPU better through the window, but worried about the weight of the two hard drives.

Edit: Nevermind, I'm a dummy.. the hard drive bracket is gone completely. ;) Where'd you move them too, the extra 5.25" and 3.5" bay I presume?

Thanks

- JT

I moved the single hard drive to the 3 1/2 bay. however, when I sold the case I was able to bend a small section of the aluminum from the optical bay to hold the hard drive cage in place. (I could have easily added a screw or two to hold it as well.)

The case rigidity was still good with all of the components installed and the side support bracket removed.

Sounds good, do you feel that two hard drives (1 in the floppy bay and one in the bottom 5.25") would breath ok?

Thanks

- JT

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as a few people here, not able to decide on a case as of yet; not that it matters as the mobo I am going to get has not been released in the US and will not be for about another week or so. I am down to three, maybe four cases. The SG01B-Evo (no windows as I'll likely line whatever case I get with some sound dampening/deadening material of some sort), the Qmicra, the Lanbox Lite (probably not cause I am looking for light/portable case and this is nearly 3x as heavy as some cases), and then either a X-Qpack II or the MicroFly MX6 (I just wish they sold the MX6 w/o a PSU cause I have no use for it and would much rather save the money and get one w/o). So that is where I am sitting right now.

I would love to get an SG02, or even moreso a Lanbox HT, but neither are offered in the US and I cannot find anyone that will ship them here. I do have a friend going over to Europe in September for school so I may see if he can find either of them; what do you think my chances are on that one? lol

Time to revive the dead. Dworley, how well does the SG-01 ventilate if you don't use the Zalman fan controller? I'd imagine that it's also a little bit louder. Also, what AMD motherboard did you go with on your build?
P.S. Check your PM. :D
