dworley's extensive SFF Gallery

I have a couple of questions about your setup since I am building one this weekend.

How does the air cooling compare to your previous water cooled system?

What fans did you use in the pics?

How do you like the fan controller?

Mine will be an X2 4200, Biostar MB and single 7800GTX 512 BTW

Thanks,
Shawn

The build you specified should work nicely!

The Zalman ZMFC-1 fan controller works great, I have it controlling the two fans above the video card, chipset fan, crossflow fan and the HD fan. All fans are setup to exhaust air out of the case. It's super quiet and my temps are excellent so I have not considered water cooling.

I bought two silent 17db Nexus 80mm fans to use above the video cards prior to buying the fan controller.

dworley, I've been browsing the Sudhain forums a fair bit lately, and I completely forgot I'd seen you around here before.

You're a true inspiration man...I'm making the move back to Shuttle, and starting up a relatively small home based business building shuttle PC's. I've dealt with them before and I know I have the knowledge to get me started...but it's stuff like this that really gets my head racing. :D

Thx a bunch, I'll go checkout that thread you linked to, but what is the name of the 5.25" watercooler you used in a few of those chassis'...I'm thinking of doing the same thing now that I've seen it. :cool:

EDIT: NVM...found it in the thread, thx bro. :)

Sorry for the seperate post, but I had one more thing...

Did you ever end up watercooling your CPU and GPU with that Kingwin or just the video card(s)? Just wondering...it does look like something that'd be fun to try out...but I'm not sure on how it'd perform if the CPU was thrown into the loop. Might be best to leave the CPU out, as it's easy enough to find a fairly quiet 92mm fan for a rear I.C.E. fan, but squashing any modern videocard HSF against the side panel of a Shuttle is a really good way to skyrocket your cards temps and increase the noise the cooler's putting out. That Kingwin actually looks like a VERY good idea now that I think of it, 7900GTX 512MB would be easily installable without any case mods if someone wanted to maintain a fairly stock looking SFF.

those cases ARE NICE! especially the SS .

one question thou, whered u get that desk? u got a link?

It looks familiar, I agree...a link would be nice dworley. ;)

I did watercool both the Video card and CPU in several of my older Shuttles and the temps were decent. To fit the Kingwin AWC-1, I had to use the Shuttle G2 front panel which has cutouts for the optical drive. Evercool also makes a similar kit which is updated with better water flow.

I have three of those Intelligent Designs / Osullivan corner desks :cool:

Nice stuff man, nice stuff.

I bought two of my corner desks at Lowe's a few years ago but they don't carry them any more. I have seen them at Office Max or Office Depot in the last year.

It always sucks when you find something you really like, only to find out that it's not available anymore.

When I can I'll be picking up a black Jerker from Ikea for my new system...the current desk forces me to have the comp on the floor (which does NOT work with the amount of dust in my basement suite) or on the left side of the monitor. Either way, I can't turn my head to look into the comp...and that just WON'T do. :p

that desk is awesome looking. too bad its HUGE. i gotta find something. getting tired of this behemoth covering my entire wall.....

im pretty sure they still sell them at staples.. and its not huge at all.. looks it.. but in person its actually kinda tiny.. but it does have lots of desk space and some decent organization built into it..

i wish my staples had it. went there 2 weeks ago to look for a new table and they still got the same desks as last year in january.... they NEVER update their stock. I think I will take a trip to Office Max soon, even thou its 20 miles away.....

My local staples is the same way. it sucks I know...I'll end up either making a trip further out to another store, or ordering something from the net and paying for freight. :(

Ah well.

I have a couple more questions about the zalman fan controller. It looks like you also have the fanmate hooked up to your blue orb?

What scheme did you use to hook all the fans up?

I am trying to figure out how to use my MB fan and temp monitoring along with the zallman controller and 7000 cpu cooler.

Thanks

The Blue ORB II CPU cooler is connected to the MB CPU Fan header and is controlled via Speedfan

Zalman Fan Controller: SG01
Fan1 = (2) 80mm fans above Video cards
Fan2 = Northbridge fan
Fan3 = 80mm HD Fan
Fan4 = Crossflow Fan

Hi dworley,

What is in you're oppinion the best way to cool the CPU in the SG01 case? I'm about to build one my self, using the components in my sig, except from the mobo which is gonna be a eVGA's NF44-AX microATX board.
And one last question.... Should I swap the BFG 7900GTX for 2x BFG 7800 GTX?
With the 7900GTX in my SN25, the score in 3Dmark05 is 10490... would it make a huge diffenence? since I also would like room for a X-Fi XtremeMusic.

I would suggest trying the 7900GTX as I have tried (2) 7800GTX in SLI and find that the 7900GTX performance is more than suffucient to run all of my games at high detail. The heat output from (2) 7800gtx is also significantly greater.

For CPU coolers - I would suggest either the Zalman 7700, 7000 or a Thermaltake Blue Orb II. I have used all three in an SG01 and they work very well.

Qmicra review system:

Qmicra SFF Case
EVGA NF44 mATX SLI Motherboard
X2 4800+ w/Zalman CNPS9500
7900GTX / 7900GTX SLI
2gb Samsung CL3 (4x512)
NEC 3540A DVD/RW
Audigy2 ZS
Enermax Liberty 620W PSU
Lian-Li temp / fan monitor
(4) Nexus 80mm 17db silent fans

Hopefully I will have some time to work on it more this weekend....not easy finding time for reviews between my real job and other hobbies! ;)

Looks Sweet Man. What is your profession? How does the Qmicra compare to the Shuttles as far as sound?

Some collection you have there dworley..... What do you do for a living? must cost you a fortune.

How about the heat? can i get away, because the PSU seems to be in the way...? Maybe I should get a PSU with perforated cover, and a nice 120mm fan.

I have been working as a technical consultant for FileNet - Electronic Document Management systems for the past 17 years for different company's.

With the Silent 80mm fans, Zalman CNPS9500 and Liberty PSU - the Qmicra is quieter than my Shuttle's at idle and load. (Note: Using Speedfan for temp control of CPU fan in all systems and speed reducer on noisy NF44 Northbridge fan)
I've been ordering a Zalman CU7700... will it fit?
very much so

Hey, Nice :D How was the MicroFly compared to the Qpack? I think I found my next case....EZ

Nice dworley.... maybe I should post some shots of my SG01-E with display. Have you seen the new Lian Li microATX kabi? It's in the main forum, shown in Taipai Computex 2006. Think I'll switch my SG01-E for that one.

dworley, can we be expecting you to pick up the lian-li case coming out? i'm pretty interested in that, and i'd like to see your take on it :)

I was really hoping Lian Li would have designed the case to look more like the V1000 styling.

I'm probably going to pass on this one as it doesn't even fit a 7900GTX :p

i probably would've liked the v1000 style better too, but i have this nagging feeling that the pictures currently available aren't doing it justice, so there's still hope :) either way, it still looks pretty good. more smooth/elegent than the qpack etc, which is what i like. i'm gonna have to wait and see when fry's will start getting these in, hopefully they'll have em soon :D

although the side-firing optical drives are understandable; it takes up less room front to back.

My current SFF collection: (Only two are built out systems)
