Dual Core Gaming Fix Guide

Dump that AMD (like I just did) get a E6400, E6600 (economically priced) or E6700 (tad expensive)

With correct MB you'll overclock like I did to 3.5GHZ on Air STABLE and BEST thing of all???

NO need to download patches, install fixes, install CPU drivers (LOL??) and absolutely NO need to set affinity on the cores!

1) it takes about 2 minutes to get and install the patches
2) i never need to set affinity, hence you dont know what you're talking about
3) my X2 OCs on air no problem
4) go away plz

...In fact I am so happy with my $1013 (CPU E6600/ P5WDH MB / 2GB RAM) upgrade that even if I had to throw my X2 4400+ @ 2.7Ghz / 2GB / A8N32-SLI in the garbage I'd still be happy... :D

So then, You won't feel bad about making me a killer deal for that X2 4400+ processor since I'm in the market for one, right? ;)

On another quick topic, does anyone out there have Cliff Notes on what games / software *do* have issues with Dual core X2's? I've got a X2 4200+ that I use mostly for utilities / Applications (Photoshop, Premiere, etc.) but hardly game on it. I'm looking at building me another X2 system for gaming.....so, give me the summary list.

Ax

It does feel odd, doesn't it? I've felt no issues in games/apps, but I've yet to try them all. With my previous 165, I had to install the driver, but that was all. Only FEAR had issues...and even then they were slight.

OH BTW...toss that garbage over here, would ya? :D

PS. You might wanna do somethin about that nic Pentium...

I don't know what I'm talking about? Well here's something for ya, where were you when I was making a living in 1990? That's how long I've been in the adult world making a living and I started my interest in computers in the early 80s as a kid.

Now I'm a senior network engineer and I think I know quite a bit, even with all the patches and drivers etc etc there are STILL issues with X2 CPU ask around educate yourself.

I've had the nic since the debut of the P-60 release, the 386/486 era was mostly taken up by women, work, bars, clubs and other general wastes of money. I really got back into my enjoyment of computing again when I ordered one of the first P-60 systems (of course overclocked to P-75 speed) after that I think I've owned most of them, P90/100, P133, P200, P2-300, P3-450, P3-800, P3-1.2, P4s then I went over to the dark side and tried 2 builds of AMD with 2 different X2 4400+, wife now has a 3700+ San Diego @ 2.86ghz.

Only did the AMD thing due to FPS gaming scores, I am glad Intel came around and can satisfy gamers as working with computers all day I enjoy coming home and gaming.

BTW the X2 4400+ is going to a CPA friend as a 2003 Terminal Server, I'm skeptical as to whether it will work fine for him but if it doesn't it'll be many hours of having to replace and reload everything.

i play Fear, HL2, BF2 they all run great and i have a X2 4200

Most people experience the issues when doing a serious overclock @ 2.33ghz on the 4200+ that's hardly much of an overclock therefore I'm quite sure your X2 runs flawlessly.

Hey Pentium, stop with the fan-boy rants, hmm? If u like Intel, fine...who cares? If other's like AMD, fine...who cares?

I thought most of us were over this...back about the time mullets and The Pop Star Formerly Known as Prince went 'out'??

All I've done is install the MS Hotfix. Everything seems to run well so far. I haven't touched the Dual Core Optimizer yet.

Well to be honest I thought a "fan-boy" was someone that argued a certain product regardless of factual merits. If I'm wrong please correct me on the proper definition.

I am a "fan-boy" of whatever is the best and also equally important "best value"

Clearly if you do reading you know where this is now and for a while.

My posts are not to enflame or argue with anyone. At 33 yrs old and a network engineer my time is valued at $125/hr, my posts have been to assist the community members because maybe some of you are sick to death of dealing with some AMD dual core issues.

If you are happy and everything works great then wonderful but if you are like me and several of my local friends you might be interested in the alternative that exhibits zero issues to date with dual core gaming. That is what this thread was about right?

By the way, I haven't read this whole thread, but I thought I should share two things (sorry if they have been said):

One, the Dual Core Optimizer and the Microsoft Hot-fix do the exact same thing. You should not have both installed as they will cause system instability.

Two, I believe there was some confusion about whether or not this issue is present on x64 XP, and just to clarify, this issue is present on x64 XP. The Dual Core Optimizer is currently the only fix for x64.

Get over yourself. Blah blah I'm a network this network that. I am worth 125/hr. Ohhhhhhh Pppppleaseeeeeeeeeee.....

Well I'm 45 and a bicycle tech & sales guy, as well as a sometimes comp geek that has worked in IT and comp sales, and I'm saying that plenty of peeps here are quite happy with their DC AMD's, and if they've had probs they've gotten them worked out. But that's all beside the point.

As much knowledge that you may be willing to offer - which is a fine thing to do in its own rite - this is not the thread to try to convince others of the relative merits of another platform or CPU. I'll remind you that this thread is about: "The AMD Dual Core Optimizer", "The AMD Driver ( /usepmtimer switch)", "The Microsoft Hotfix", "Set the Affinity Manually", and "Newer video drivers for your graphics card", as per the OP. This thread is also listed under the "AMD Processors" forum. If you want to talk Intel DC's or Intel whatever, there are threads for that elsewhere.

Otherwise, I think we should all try to stick to the specifics discussed in the OP/OT.

i still have this problem with the stuttering in games after awhile, the fps is way high but its like stuttering, you can really see it in CSS when you run left and right along a wall

Is this true, do the MS Hotfix and the DC Optimizer do the same thing?

I did notice that my system was hanging when I had both installed on my last OS build. Since formatting I only use the MS Hotfix without any issues.

It is so fast that I feel I am using a futuristic PC (actually I am because fastest CPU is X6800 @ $1100 and runs 2.93Ghz)

Intel is back and badder than ever.

I smell a troll - alot of us are PREFECTLY happy with our AMD rigs.
Go troll another forum, mkay?

off topic
First. Kinda lame to post this even if it's true as we have no real way to verify your claims. You for example don't even know for certain my gender, my employment status, nor does it even matter to the context of this thead.

Second. This thread is specifically a thread for AMD Dual-Core gaming fixes. "TROLLS" post material that is off topic. Individuals that don't find relief from this thread will notice there is also an Intel subforum to checkout. We don't need multiple posts from non AMD cores saying that this product sucks and to move over to the greener pastures they are experiencing.

On topic, seems like the latest nVIDIA 91.47 driver has added some Dual-Core wonkyness to my system. Were as with 91.33 I could bench test with 3Dmark03, 05 and 06 all day long and run all of my latest titles, I now have it freeze halfway through and when it unfreezes the FPS is half of what it was before. Blech! I'm going to remove the 91.47 driver and return to the previous one this weekend to confirm.

Interesting, I might try uninstalling the Dual-Core Optimizer this weekend and see if this is the cause with both present or if it's the new 91.47 drivers from nVIDIA that are adding some weirdness lately.

i have both the AMD DC optimizer and the MS hotfix installed, and winxp and games are stable @ 2.2 GHz. i don't know what version of nVIDIA drivers i have, but it's probably an older edition. nonetheless, it's stable for me.

I'm moving back to version 91.33 because that also was stable for me. Current Dual-Core owners, possibly even Core 2 Duo owners, may be wise to skip the 91.47 version.

I havent had much time to read through all of the posts. So what fix should I get if I play counter-strike source? So many ways work. Which is the most stable, or does that depends on what pc you have.

91.47 with thrend optimization set to on works fine for my x2. If it didn't work for you it means your core wasn't stable. Just turn it to off.

i am not sure but i think there are separate forums for intels and AMDs... so go back where you came from...

just because you all have the money to upgrade from your 939 systems and we either dont or like AMD as a company doesnt mean you are better than us..

Go back to your intel proccessors or OC forums and if you cant help someone or participate in a thread w/o it turning to conroe > am2,939 AMD

then dont post.... i am tired of it and it is dominating this thread and lots of post... come on, have fun with you system, brag do what you want but dont be a dick!

I haven't touched the 91.xx series yet. Reports of unstable drivers abound put me off. I may give the 91.47 drivers a go.

I'd agree, but this is even when I return to the stock settings for the X2 3800+. Last night I went back to 91.31 and it was stable at any speed.

For my current overclock, I run at 2.5GHz using the following settings.

FSB/HTT: 250MHz
HT Multiplier: 4x
CPU multi: 10
CPU VID: 1.375 (just a shade higher than stock)
Memory: 3-4-4-8 1T. I'm using Patriot DDR500 so this is actually a stock speed for that ram. Memory: 2.7V

Do you feel that this may cause instability? If the problem with 91.47 continues even at stock do you feel that I may have a defective core? Fortunately I've a boxed edition so I could slap on the stock heatsink for a little while and then RMA it.

THanks!

EDIT: Upon review, it looks like the problem is only in reference to certain applications. For example, following the suggestions Kirbyrj has on the first page, all of my Valve Source games (HL 2: Episode One, Counter Strike Source, etc) actually are all running nice and stable. What is happening and I can't seem to find the reason is:

3dMark03, 05 and 06 all start, bench the first portion and freeze halfway through. No caps lock response, no numlock response and no ctrl+alt+del response. If I wait 2 minutes instead of hitting the reset switch they'll start working again from the same point that they had frozen but at half the FPS that they were running at before the freeze. All other applications seem to run just fine, but the Futuremark problems are kind of disturbing since I don't see these reported as issues with Dual core processors. I wonder what this could be as it occurs in all driver revisions, nVIDIA 91.31, 91.33 and 91.47.

Hi all, I´m have the opty is necesary update with The AMD Dual Core Optimizer or this only work with X2??? if you see the drivers update of opteron in amd doesnt the optimizer...however I have install this but i cant see any diference. Thx

finaly this thing is now a sticky !

I wont need to scrool or change pages to see this thread :)

Are you having problems with certain games?

only in rfactor when have more 10 cars and press control alt or control esc, the fps low from 110 to 5~8

You think it is dual core related? I haven't seen rfactor. It almost sounds like a program problem if it only shows up after pressing certain keys.

When I have the amd4000 dont have this problem.

I'd posted earlier how I was having some instability issues with the nVidia drivers.

I'd like to report that I've had excellent success with the newer beta drivers on www.nzone.com. The 92.91 PureVideo HD beta drivers.

I've now been able to run multiple 3Dmark03, 05 and 06 benchmarks with the tests set to loop 3 times. No hangs, no freezes.

I'd post the results but being beta I can't publish a compare URL, but I'm quite happy with the results as well. If you having problems and are willing to "experiment" with a beta, you might try the 92.91 beta drivers. Remember though, that being beta it could also cause you all kinds of pain.

andersondiaz said:
yes I install this, but nothing...I doesnt control or alt del when I practice rfactor :(

Does that mean you can't CTRL-ALT-DEL out of rfactor or that you haven't tried it? I'd see if that fixes your problem. That's the simplest dual core fix out there.

well i did the fix #3 for warcraft III

it works for a bit, then it goes back to the 2fps / instant scroll thing

sometimes it returns to normal, but most of the time it stays that way. Any way to permenantly leave it normal?

I just upgraded my cpu from 3200+ venice to 3800+ x2. I installed fix #2 and fix#3 and my counter-strike source seem to work fine. However it does lagg a litttle. Compare to my old cpu. I dont know if the new cpu is causing the performance issue. Im using a 6600gt graphic card and it run smoother when i was using the 3200+. Is it the cpu causing the lag problem? or its time for me to upgrade a new graphic card.
