Dual Core Gaming Fix Guide

has anyone fixed the problem where after playing counterstrike source for a few hours when your running in the game its kinda choppy? it feals like your getting low FPS but iam getting 200. restarting steam and CSS wont fix it, the only thing that does for me is restarting my pc.

Same problem, game starts off at like 100-150 fps range and as I play it will get choppy and weird and fps seems to drop to 50-90. +showbudget shows some things going berserk, which I dont believe is normal. I wonder if setting affinity will fix this? I dont have an special fixes on, I dont have any problems with my games / anything that setting the affinity didnt fix. I'll try.

CSS seems ok for me.

one question though do i need to run the amd_dc_opt.exe manually every time i reboot my PC or is it just automatic. I could also schedule it as a task to run at startup.

Have a 3800 x2 and never had a problem with any of those games. I did install the amd driver later and didn't have a problem still.

This still seems like speculation to me even after the hotfix has been out forever. Haven't tried the Dual Optimizer. But I'm not going to fix what's not broken.

im just thinking about my comp, do you guys think using mobo sound will cause the lag stuttering?

Only in a newer game wher your in game settings don't default corerctly for anything other than a hardware accelerated creative card like doom 3 or COD2. You may have to manually set sound in-game. Your board has a prety good onboard codec just not hardware accelerated and no eax 3-5.

cool, thanks for that info.i'll probably buy a sound card and see if it effects the lag sluttering. Currently i am expericing lag stuttering in a few games such as sims 2, warcraft 3 and counterstrike source, but not in UT2004, AOE3, DS2. Do you know if the above mentioned games (aside from COD2 and doom3) would stuttering if no onboard sound is installed?

You can always disable onboard sound in bios and see if that changes anything. 5 minutes and you'd know if your onboard sound was doing anything ;).

hi, thanks for that suggestion, i just tried it out and it still lags and stutters :(.

ATI has gotten back to me and has basically said that everything is fine with ati graphics card. i might have to return it and get a warranty on it if it doesnt work. The ati people said that i need to fulfill the minimum power requirement- my case comes with built in power, so how do i check if i have enough power for it or not?

read the side of the power supply, i bet in most cases you wont have a very high end power supply model

no the volts is either 115 or 230 (US and Europe) Volts never change the 465 or what ever is the watts, check the AMPS for the 12v line, 3.3v line, and the 5v line. You will see them on the power supply with an little A after the number

okay this is what it says on the power supply sticker:

+3.3V +5V +12V -12V +5VSB
28A 45A 18A 1A 2.5A
230W 230W 216W 12W 12.5W
422W 422W 422W - -

So what do these numbers mean? does it mean that my power supply isnt enough and i need to get a better one to run my current hardware config?

About the numbers, because my case partially covers the stickers, i can't actually see what it says on the left of those numbers because its covered by the case. i can see on the 230W column something that resembles "combined power". I wonder if that helps?

If you live in the USA do not mess with the 115/230 volts you will fry everything, if you live in US its 115v, dont try switching it. The power supply should be ok for those, not really sure whats going on though. About the combine power dont worry to much who makes the power supply?

dont know who makes the power supply. cant see the manufacturer name on it. seems like a home brand. hmmph. and i live outside the US, in australia. although the sticker at the back of the case only says 230V only.

well got some good news and bad news. Good news is that i reformatted my comp and war3 works for about an hour on dota before it lags. CS:S also plays fine for about half an hour. Bad news is that the same problem comes up after an hour of war3. Im gonna try applying the dual core now and see how that goes.

Bad news!
updated the amd dual core optimizer. Started up war3 to play and it started lagging like hell! straight off the bat. so luckily i created a system checkpoint prior to installing dual core and restored it back to normal. Might try the hotfix next.

War3 and Diablo2 only worked for me running the Win2000 launcher program. If I tried anything else (Alt-tab doesn't work), it didn't run right. Must be blizzard related.

DOD:S never gave me problems. In fact, my brother is running my old Opty 165 setup right now and never stutters or lags without any dual core fixes in place  .

BTW, one utility I didn't see listed is the Microsoft Application Compatibilty Toolkit. It creates a small database of the application fixes, and you apply one or more to each app having a problem.

Good utility as you don't need to modify the exe, and if you upgrade the app, the fixes are still applied.

Unloading the database stops the fixes from loading.

HTH.

The Microsoft Hotfix fixed me up with HL2: Episode 1. (Pretty much the only game I really wanted to try with my brand new dual core system. :D )

Thanks so much for doing the research guys, it's made my new computer experience muuuuch better!

This solved all my stutter problems:
I installed the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer: http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/TscSync.zip , and the newest amd cpu driver. (1.3.2) : http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/utilities/amdcpusetup.exe
the first page should be updated with this info because it makes the other info obsolite.
this fixed ALL the problems i was having with amd 4200 x2

amd users this is all you need.all the old fixes are obsolite.
your guess is as good as mine as to why they wont update the main thread :(

You think it matters which one you install first? I was assuming the driver first and then the optimizer.

Here's my system (just built, so everything was a new install)

Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
2GB (2 x 1GB) Corsair XMS (Twinx2048-3200c2)
2 x PNY brand Geforce 7600GS
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
160g Seagate Barracuda 7200 SATA 3.0 Gb/s

I play WoW. I know about the frame rate cap being 64fps for dual core systems and that they experience stuttering when panning around. Blizzard is fixing this in the next patch, up on PTR now and everything looks great so far.

The problem I am having is rather strange. I get constant disconnects from WoW servers. The weird thing is the game will be functioning normally, as in I can see chat, etc but when i try to interact with the game i get nada. I can't chat, i can hit stuff and i can't log out, even though I can see live chat happening while i'm there (I know its live because of ventrillo) i cannot respond to it. Basically its like i'm on a one way connection where i can receive data but not send. Eventually I will get disconnected from the server (but by now i've learned to constantly try to chat and if i'm starting to get disconnected i just alt f4 out).

I read this entire thread and saw some instances were people getting disconnected from other games (i think BF2 was the main one) was a dual core issue. Any thoughts, ideas?

The first page is fine I think. I needed the XP hotfix as well to make HL2 happy, and I'm sure there are some older games that want affinity to go at full power. YMMV, I suppose.

This was happening to me even before I got my X2. I think its WoW server related.

The main thread was updated I believe. I did it a while ago.

Just wondering if someone might have a suggestion, I built a system around the a8n31-SLI and running that with an X2 4800 and a x1900xtx. The only game played so far is most wanted and it runs really well, but unfortunatly ran into two issues so far in the build.

1. Right away there were Explorer scripting errors, seen at the msn default homepage and with msn messenger, today page.

2. There were two floppy drives listed in the device manager, fixed right away by uninstalling one of the devices.

I applied the optimizer and the cpu driver and still saw the scripting error.

Why would the system list two floppy drives in the first place?
Second, why would I get errors in ie this quickly? (Although firefox runs great).

Does anyone have any input to why I ran into these problems? Thanks in advance...

Just out of curiosity, why do you think they are dual core related as opposed to a WinXP problem?

Just thought this might be a good place to start thats all, mabey some users with the same configuration ran into something like this. I see what you mean about it being Xp related but since it was a fresh install I thought it might be related to the components.

Doesn't sound like dual core problem at all. Your best bet would be to take a look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308260

Unfortunately, the symptoms listed in the article could be just side effects of larger issues like hardware problems. This thread is differently not the place to start though. ;)

Good luck.

dual core optimizer, ati driver UPDATE did not work for me. (using old versions seem to be better)

winlauncherXP seems to work for war3; cs working normally, but getting FPS only about 30-50, averaging 40. i thought i would kill cs:s since its quite old, but apparently not. hmmph. The res is set at 1280x1028 and probably the highest everything.

I've noticed hitching in 3d2k3's nature demo on the e6300 akin to an AMD X2 wo/ driver/hotfix. Anyone know if the new Intel chips have/need fixes?

Halo, UT2004, and GTR2 run perfect. Quake 4's been crashing and the performance's hurtin' a bit tho.

I am currently playing EvE Online and this is the "only" game that I have an issue with.
where as the game will just crash me to my desktop. I have taken notice to various things, meaning it can be when I run a bunch of all the way to only running game and mail in the background, it will crash to desktop. If I'm only running the game it will crash to desktop.

It's not always concurrent, can be hours at a time to a few times within 2 hours.

I have gone through this forum and the drivers for the chip are updated, the video have been updated, my hubby has pretty much did majority of the fixes listed and to no avail.

I'm at wits end here on what to do. As I see it is only this particular game that I see this issue. However I haven't actually reinstalled any of the others since I rebuilt my pc.

Is there any other possible idea's, advice, things to possibly look or check for, recheck. LOL.

When did you "rebuild" your PC? Did you swap out a single core CPU for a dual core one? If so, did you reinstall Windows?

Brand new mother board and cpu
the hard drive has a fresh install of xp pro

I just built it what about 2-3 months ago. I originally got a evga sli mtoher board (micro atx), well had a bios issue on that... ended up with an Asus motherboard that is where the chip currently is.

My old system was an intel p4 3 gig...

Eve has been a fresh install along with the xp as well.

From my experiences with EVE, its very sensitive to driver issues. You should start a petition detailing your problem because CCP is much more likely to know what crashes their software. It can be anything from a crappy audio driver to AMD's Cool'n'Quiet feature. And in fact, it's most likely not a dual core problem at all.

Good luck.

Dump that AMD (like I just did) get a E6400, E6600 (economically priced) or E6700 (tad expensive)

With correct MB you'll overclock like I did to 3.5GHZ on Air STABLE and BEST thing of all???

NO need to download patches, install fixes, install CPU drivers (LOL??) and absolutely NO need to set affinity on the cores!

It is so fast that I feel I am using a futuristic PC (actually I am because fastest CPU is X6800 @ $1100 and runs 2.93Ghz)

Intel is back and badder than ever.

In fact I am so happy with my $1013 (CPU E6600/ P5WDH MB / 2GB RAM) upgrade that even if I had to throw my X2 4400+ @ 2.7Ghz / 2GB / A8N32-SLI in the garbage I'd still be happy... :D
