the first page should be updated with this info because it makes the other info obsolite.

in fact if it wasn't for this thread I prolly would have thrown the game away it was so bad.

thanks

Hi Guys,

sorry to be a nuisance, but i can't get my war3 to run smoothly. I have tried number #1 (installing dual core optimiser), number #2 (checked the boot.ini has /usepmt timer- but it doesnt have the /bootlogo command) and number #3 (installing windows hotfix).

Now, my war3 game is still lagging on battle.net. In the beginning, everything runs fine, but after a while, when there are more units and everyone is fighting, it starts to get "laggy"-not the traditional laggy, as units still respond instantly to commands, and its not 'computer' lag, because i can still move around the map and all the screen loads instantly, but the units become jerky and choppy. Im wondering is this the same effect you guys are experiencing now atm? Is this a CPU problem or what? This is really annoying as i brought a new comp just to play games, and this kind of stuff is happening.

Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon X2 3800+
ASUS A8R32-MVP-DELUXE
SAPPHIRE PCI-E 256MB X800GT
Kingston 2G DDR 400 (2x1)
Seagate SATA 250GB HDD

i don't think its a video card issue because i've tried running war3 on the lowest video settings and it still gets choppy after a while... since im running on onboard ethernet card, do you think i would need to upgrade the drivers for the onboard ethernet? Could it be a mother board issue? I will try look for upgraded drivers tonight...

Also, do i have to do the upgrades in any particular order? I did #1,#3, then upgraded drivers for #2...

Here's my boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

Please help... any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks

I've never had any luck with either War3 or Diablo2 unless I set the affinity manually by alt-tabbing out of the game. After I did that, it worked great.

See if that works then post back.

Alright so I'm getting my Opteron 165 tomorrow. I'm going to reformat with a fresh install of windows XP Pro for this thing. Which fixes should I get ?

I was thinking the AMD driver and the microsoft fix...

Check down a little lower in the OP for the program called Win2000 launcher. Run the game using that program to set it so it only runs on one CPU.

That should fix most of your problems, although I have heard that the Optimizer works too.

ok so i have tried using the winxp launcher program, and turned off processor 1 (there are 7 processors? thats crazy) and its still laggy. I've tried everything now and war3 is still laggy. sigh.

When I run it, I only run it on CPU 0 and uncheck all the rest of them.

hmm... i have just tried all of the above to try and get warcraft 3 working, and none of them have worked. do you guys think i should remove each one and try them one by one again?

oh btw, kirbyrj, your work on this subject is really appreciated, even though it didn't help me, hehe.

and i've run with just using processor 1 and unchecking the rest... doesnt help... also i've set the microsoft hotfix to = "1" instead of 0....

Just out of curiosity, did you reinstall windows after your switch to dual core? Was it a fresh install? You might have mentioned it earlier, but I've been through a lot of threads :D.

its a completely new system that i just brought and built myself. Its my first time building so im a bit scared i screwed something up whilst building, or put the wrong plugs in the wrong places. so i guess its a fresh install.

i've just installed CS and it has the same problem, even with manually setting processors at either only cpu0 or cpu1...

im no longer certain whether this is a dual core problem or some other problem... what do you guys think? the next most likely suspect would be the graphics card... but i've already upgraded the graphics card driver for the sapphire radeon X800GT...

For the graphics card driver, on the official homepage, there is a list of items for me to download:

RADEON
Display Drivers and Software for RADEON Products

1. Catalyst 6.6 Windows XP - Driver Download

2. ATI Multimedia Center 9.14

3. HYDRAVISION - For RADEON and Mobile ATI Products

4. Catalyst Crew Feedback

I only need to download the first one correct? i dont need multimedia centre and all the other garbage, right?

so would anyone have a clue why my system's not running the games properly? I've had some improvement with my computer, by also upgrading my graphics card and also pulling out some random wires that i put in when i first made my comp. its now running a bit better- i can play about 5 games of CS before it starts stuttering again... i have no idea why thats happening.

Do i have to do something to the bios for dual cores? because i have just inserted all the cores and graphics card without editing bios in anyway.

Would be good to post your system specs in your profile sig

did you install the chipset drivers for the ATI chipset? That might result in choppy video playback.

I also tried everything and it's brother for my Opty 170 to play WarCraft 3 (Battle.net).

Found a program called WinlauncherXP, configured it, now I'm good to go...

I'm addicted to DotA so it was a good thing too!

WinLauncher XP and Win2000 Launcher are basically the same program IIRC.

chipset drivers for ati??? which one is that one? hmm... i could have installed it... how do i go and check?

i dont know much about ati system drivers but for nvidia system drivers they would show up in you add/remove programs list

yeah i have been to that page before, and went to

RADEON > Catalyst 6.6 Driver Download

and dled the first 2 cable items

what do you guys think we should do next?

i've just been thinking about my comp whilst i was at work and it doesnt make sense for the stuttering to occur if i only use 1 cpu. so does this rule out the fact that the cpu is causing the problems? is there anyway i can check if my graphics card is working fine>?

on a side note, Thief 3 and Dungeon Siege 2 both run perfectly. but for DS2, it never really screwed up anyway before or after the patches/hotfixes.

and kirbyrj, i selected the motherboard with ati graphics, then downloaded the one that included the south bridge in it.. doesnt help with CS. i assume it doesnt help for war3 either... my question is, because i have crossfire on my MB, would that cause the stuttering? i only have the 1 ati radeon sapphire x800gt graphics card...

hmm. im really stuck at this point, dont know what to do. i've tried reinstalling the graphics drivers and the south bridge but it didnt make a difference. i also tried to use driver cleanup but windows wont let me go into safemode even if i press f8 during start up. does anyone have any suggestions - any at all- as they would be greatly appreciated. Could my graphics card be faulty?

Honestly, I have no idea at this point. I never did figure out the ATI chipset drivers myself, but I seem to get good rates. I doubt your graphics cards is faulty since the other games play ok, but it is very strange to me that War3 doesn't work right when using the launcher utility. Something doesn't make sense there.

Just for kicks, I'd reformat and install Windows and see if that clears up any problems :(. I'd try the Optimizer as a first step, then hotfix, then AMD driver in that order on a fresh install to see if you can get CS to work. War3 might need a launcher program no matter what you do.

hey man, thanks for the help. its really appreciated. sorry i might have seemed a bit frustrated in my posts before, and sorry if i sounded ungrateful. i'll give it a format during the weekend and see how things turn out... i've just installed UT2004 and thats running fine too. I've also used ATI's support and see what they say about it.

Once again- thanks :)

No problem...if you figure out what the problem is, post back. I'd like to know :).

has anyone fixed the problem where after playing counterstrike source for a few hours when your running in the game its kinda choppy? it feals like your getting low FPS but iam getting 200. restarting steam and CSS wont fix it, the only thing that does for me is restarting my pc.

Gabe3, thats whats happening to me. except you're lucky in getting it every few hours- mine is every 15 mins. Have you tried everything on the first page?

not yet, I thought it could have something to do with my sound so I just installed some drivers

damn it, this really sucks, i really dont understand why only my computer does this, even with affinity set at 1. Why god why? am i destined to never been able to play cs and war3 properly?

I have no prohlems with all my games so far and I'm running the AMD drivers with the MS hotfix and the AMD optimser.

well iam on xp x64 edition, I havnt used regular xp 32bit since the day x64 came out

This thread is a little worrying, especially as I'm planning on getting an X2 4600+ next week. This thread looks like it will come in very handy if any problems arise!

2 months ago when I was looking at building a new system, this thread gave me the heeby-jeebies.... but I went ahaead with a Dual Core Opty-175 and applied the first 2 fixes in this post. I've played many old and new games like Morrowind, Call of Duty 2, BF2, BF1942, NWN, KOTOR 1 and 2, Doom 3, DOW, FEAR and the only game I've had a problem with was Painkiller... but just Alt-Tabbing out of Painkiller and setting the affinity got rid of the Benny-Hill effect.... game runs fine.

Very happy with my system.,,, no other issues :)

(copy/paste from a post on the intel processors board forums.)

Hey Guys,
Im new to the forum, and was browsing around since I was having some unusual problems with my computer.

My Computer Specs:
Intel Pentium D 830 (2 x3 .0 GHz)
Asus PW5D2 Premium
Kingston Valueram 2 Gigs DDR2 PC2-4200
Maxtor Diamondmax 10 200 gig SATA
BFG Geforce 6800 Ultra OC PCI-E
XG Titanium 17IN steel tower case
Enermax EG701AX-VE Noistaker 600W PSU

Around a month ago, I was playing BF2 and realised great FPS drops, Then a while later I realised that it was using over 800mb of ram, and the cpu usage was unusually high. I never bothered about it too much, because I never used to play.

I formatted my computer around 2 weeks ago, and everything was going well because I ran aquamark (bench marking utility) and I got a score of around 66 000. Now a week later, all of a sudden everything has problems. I see great fps drops in all games and abornmal CPU usage, and even the AquaMark benchmarking utility gives me a score of less then 30 000.

I was reading around the AMD Processor sub-forum, where the dual core gaming fixes are posted, and nothing there helped me. I'm sure I would get help there since most of the AMD users usually have dual core gaming problems, But I though i'd post here, since this is Intel related.

I am using windows xp SP2 with all the latest updates (even the microsoft hotfix for dual core probs), latest nvidia driver and the most updated bios update for my mobo.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

edit:
I have had this computer for about an year now, and this is the first time I have had such problems. I am thinking its either the bios update, nvidia driver, or it can be the overheating, but it seems stable right now. Also, its not only games, some programs tend to use up the cpu alot more.
