DOTA 2

Given the evidence of a halloween map coming soon (next patch, most likely), I expect that christmas will have one as well etc etc. However, I find it highly unlikely that there will be functionally different maps, since don't forget this game is still based on a WC3 custom map, which Icefrog has promised to support as long as possible.

So Visual/Theme changes yes, functionally separate maps that you can choose between, probably not anytime soon.

And I expect the theme changes to not be choose-able, that is you are stuck with whatever the current themed map is (ala Dota 1 again).

Any thoughts on 6.76? I didn't really think magnataur needed a buff but w/e.

i doubt it. themes is a good idea though. cause the map itself would pretty much have to be identical.
Yea, exactly! Just a different paint of coat.
They keep pushing for community content, re-skinning maps would be a great generator of content, I just don't know how they would go about it though...If it's even possible... Maybe headaches on matchmaking and custom maps? But if its just a reskin, not everyone needs to have it? Fine. No custom maps. But why cant Valve make something? I guess they are with halloween. Cant wait to see that.

I really want a snow themed map, would be fitting for this time of year. Thats great news about the halloween map, maybe they will make a christmas one... As emotional as this game already is, more color could add to the already intense emotion..... haha:)

Also expect limited-time Christmas Crates + Keys, probably a santa/reindeer courier, etc.

Oh valve, you so silly.

On the plus side, hopefully 6.76b parity changes this week!

Need an invite, I'll give you a hug. :p

In all seriousness if anyone have an extra invite I'd appreciate it. They aren't worth much these days as they were worth a few months ago, just check the Dota2Trade reddit, everyone have them, some are giving them away for free or trading them for $1 chest keys.

And hey, why not help a brotha out. :D

I'll need an invite too! we should try to get a [H] team going, 5v5 in house or pub train?

Easy items for the next week or so. Doing that new map they have. Best to get in while the loots are hot.

Recently acquired the Tegu courier.

More like 2 weeks. The event runs until November 12th I believe.

Haven't tried the new gamemode though.

Someone directed me to the wikipedia to find out what the egg does.

At the conclusion of the Diretide event, the Eggs can be hatched to provide the player with a special Greevil courier that corresponds to the combinations of Essences imbued.

Essence Types:

Common Essence:
Quas Essence
Wex Essence
Exort Essence
Rare Essence:
Unusual Essence
Strange Essence
Shadow Essence

Egg Combinations:

Red Eggs:
Ferocious Egg: 1 Exort Essence
Brutal Egg: 2 Exort Essence
Merciless Egg: 3 Exort Essence
Yellow Eggs:
Anxious Egg: 1 Wex Essence
Eager Egg: 2 Wex Essence
Spirited Egg: 3 Wex Essence
Blue Eggs:
Stubborn Egg: 1 Quas Essence
Resolute Egg: 2 Quas Essence
Determined Egg: 3 Quas Essence
Green Eggs:
Covetous Egg: 2 Quas / 2 Wex Essence
Greedy Egg: 3 Quas / 3 Wex Essence
Orange Eggs:
Ravenous Egg: 2 Exort / 2 Wex Essence
Voracious Egg: 3 Exort / 3 Wex Essence
Purple Eggs:
Cruel Egg: 2 Exort / 2 Quas Essence
Wicked Egg: 3 Exort / 3 Quas Essence
White Eggs:
Blessed Egg: 2 Quas / 2 Wex / 2 Exort Essence
Seraphic Egg: 3 Quas / 3 Wex / 3 Exort Essence
Black Eggs:
Dreaded Egg: 1 Shadow Essence
Note: Adding a Shadow Essence to an egg will override any other essences put into it, turning it into a Dreaded Egg.
Natural Eggs:
Imbued Egg: All other combinations
Unusual Eggs:
Adding an Unusual Essence to an Egg places a glowing ring around its picture. Up to three of these rings may be added this way.

Going for a Seraphic egg right now. Might buy another egg if I get a shadow essence.

man i guess i just dont understand. i bought an egg though so what is that? and i put a quas into it. :O

fucking confusing.

You have an empty egg.

Then you put some essence in it. At the end of the event, the egg will hatch and give you an item (courier/pet?) depending on how many/which color of essence you put.

I have a Voracious Egg (full green), Wicked Egg (full purple), some-random-shit egg (full orange), and a seraphic egg.

Added 3 level of unusual to wicked and seraphic. Expecting something really good!

So does anyone want to discuss the actual game and strategies? I know there are other sites but I am basically limited [H] for various reasons.

Has anyone tried Slark?

Apparently Huskar is trash, but I have used him in co-op and he seems viable since the regen can basically always be on (I cast it before fights) and the ulti hits hard. I didn't use armlet, though, as suggested. Does that help greatly? Or just avoid him?

Is there an advantage to using a hero like that which the opponents may underestimate, or just stick with TA, Batrider, Sven, etc.?

I know this isn't the usual strategy, and it's more common for a snare like Shadow Shaman with one of these guys, but wouldn't a double-stun (with dmg) lane like CK + Sven be strong for getting first blood and more kills? At the amateur lvl. I wouldn't want to face it.

Has anyone used Treant Protector to great effectiveness? He can heal towers, right?

badrider is hardly ever a good choice.

sven is okay TA is good.

trean protector is one of the best supports in the game. huge str gains per level game changing ult and yeah his regen heals towers.

slark is okay. but generally if you are learning which it sounds like you are, you should stick with support so that money isnt as big of an issue. where if youre playing a carrying and you are behind in money you will lose the game for your entire team most likely

huskar isnt terrible either but there are higher tier heroes

http://esfiworld.com/news/dota-2-competitive-hero-tier-list-august-2012

usually good to refer to the higher tiered heroes and learn them first. generally there is a reason for them being banned or picked first. no doubt.

Actually I've been following the pro meta and know the highest tier for picks/bans and trends, e.g. Undying for Empire unless the opponent bans, Rubick/KotL for support especially for Zero (and KotL can pile up last hits), Jakiro now in favor and Morphling now passed over, Magnus picked up in the last few weeks, etc.

Not that I can play like them, but for general guidelines and buying items.

So far Clinkz seems to fit my style, or Death Prophet.

Slark - been awhile since I used him but he's OP. I remember stacking attack speed items, then pouncing, and if necessary disappearing to regen insanely fast and follow the enemy to finish him off.

Huskar, also OP. Should solo mid, gank side lanes at 6 and it's a guaranteed kill. BKB is a must. Don't cast heal until you need it. The less HP you have, the faster you attack. Use the arrows as a harass move early game.

Treant is all about the team cloak and then ult. Get refresher orb to ult twice.
The tower heal can be cast from anywhere, meaning you can heal top tower while you're at bottom lane.

just played a sweet game of huskar, and i was dazzle. I was casting the shallow grave to prevent death and huskar was owning. It helps to have good supports.

I think the Huskar buff is best used by prioritizing survival and proc from ulti, and if you're in a fight you get buffed and they die quicker so you retreat less.

But, in some cases, pop the regen like Sven or Tiny would. He doesn't have low damage and speed with full HP, just normal.

Good advise on learning by playing support first. Warding and map awareness is a great skill.

Most games you pick the best counters to the other team. Stunners and disablers are always good.

Speaking of support, isn't Lich's ulti kind of insane?

So consensus top tier is Jakiro, KotL, Wisp, Rubick, Shadow Shaman it seems. Lion can be a support/nuke. What about Dazzle? And there's support for Treant?

Witch Doctor should only put one point in heal, right? Why did Valve make it so weak?

Does anyone use Crystal Maiden or Omni?

Lich's ult is pretty good but most players know to spread out and dodge the bounce. He's still a good hero.

I haven't played the new Jakiro but the buff to him seems really good. KotL is a good support hero if played right. I'm not a fan of wisp but he's good. Rubick is great for spell steal. I don't think Shadow Shaman is as good as Dota 1 but still a great disabler and team battles. Dazzle is a great support hero.

I normally max maledict and cask and put 1 to 2 levels on heal depending on what my mana regen is at.

crystal maiden is pro if you get the mana regen early. most people skip it cause they are bad and dont know better. omni is also amazing.

witch doctor you get the heal last, and you get maledict first. maledict is absolutely clutch. you cast it right before you launch an attack and its just absolute rape. Maledict first then stun then ult

so you stun, maledict ult. hope for a good lane partner or a good bounce on the stun.

Dazzle is also a pro support. all around an amazing hero.

there isnt support for treant he is the support. a common item build is radiance with a mask of madness. he hits hard cause he gains a lot of str early. the radiance is because you pretty much can be perma invis in the trees

generally liches ult stomps pubs. and its usually used as a combination when more skillful players are playing.. like tidehunter, treant, enigma etc.

I almost always random in all pick, but the supports that I like to use, and have done well with, are Omniknight, Dazzle, keeper of the light, and ancient apparition.

With Omnniknight, I just couldn't die, and neither could my teammates.

Dazzle was similar, as I mentioned above, it's a good combo with a really strong hero and especially with the likes of Huskar late game since he is stronger the less HP he has.

Keeper is a fun support to sit back and cast good damage spells, but also helping your teammates with mana conservation.

Ancient Apparition is kind of an odd one, but is nice for ganking with his cold slows.

And now for something completely different: has anyone ever landed Lina's ult with Scepter AND an extra 30% or 40% spell damage from an item or Pugna's Decrepify? Over 1500 dmg, before resists. That would be nuts.

Which carries or damage-dealers are underrated? For example it was very unlikely that Outworld Destroyer would be banned, but when Mushi used him he hit like a truck.

Phantom Lancer? Clockwerk?

underrated in pugs is probably storm spirit. often overlooked. he is clutch though ive won a lot of games with him. A LOT>

Newbie player here, just tried this. Now i understand what the big deal is about it now lol

its even better when you find decent people to play with. there is nothing like winning it dota. its amazing.

lol i lost horribly, but it was still a good time

dont play all pick. that is key. best way to learn new heroes is to play them.

this game takes a lot of skill but knowledge is power too you know? like once you know what heroes are capable of it makes a huge difference.

i used to play all random heroes of newerth which is how i learned all the heroes by playing them. often all pick has retardedly bad balanced teams and picks and its easy to just pick the same hero over and over. its better to play them all

This isn't a simple question to answer. While there are heroes that are generally good to have on a team, a lot of it is circumstantial. For instance, I pick KoTL specifically as counter-push if they have a lot of strong pushers on their team. I'll also do it if there aren't any heroes on my team that don't need a lot of gold farm, that way I can support, grab wards and maybe rush a Mek.

However, if we have a good support (say Crystal Maiden or Vengeful Spirit) and we aren't dealing with a ton of push from the other side but still want some counter-push, I may pick someone like Death Prophet instead (she needs more items than KoTL to be viable in the mid and late game so she's kind of a lousy support).

Play a lot of games, its the best advice I or anyone can give. :)

This is VERY helpful btw, everyone should read it regardless of their experience level. It describes the "1-to-5 system" of a team composition: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=366357

Picking heroes and roles to fill becomes much more simplified once a clear hierarchy for farm is established.

Good luck!

Thanks. Do you (or anyone) have a great replay of a skilled Crystal Maiden in action?

What's the most underrated item for 1k+ gold? Eul's?

Which ability is hard to understand for new players, but actually good? I thought Clinkz' ultimate was weak, but it isn't.
