Well, Trent Reznor had nothing to do with Doom 2016 or Eternal

That was Mick Gordon, who is an honest-to-god savant with music and sound, but Id software fucked him over and then tried to defame him.

One of the reasons I'm holding off on this. I'd rather wait to give that kind of company my money until I know it's good.
 
I'm only about two hours into the game but so far I'm enjoying it. Ammunition economy is a lot better. Though its not like it was in the Doom games of old, the melee hits are actually effective which makes them less painful to use. Shield is kind of OP though. But given the way the game plays, it works well.

I definitely like how you can use the shield to transport to other areas of the arena, strategically maneuvering. The larger areas is a God send for moving in and out as well. Loving this installment so far.

The 5090 at 4K, Ultra Nightmare minus the crap settings (motion blur, film grain, chromatic aberration) with DLAA is a solid 80fps+ on first level going up to 100fps+ in sections. On Quality a solid 120fps+. DLSS 4 though make a huge difference on motion clarity and stableness and is virtually perfect. Wow! Using the HDR fix listed in this thread which work well and wakes up the environment. AMD really needs to get FSR 4 working in Vulkan and this title. No issues so far with the 5090 but only played around 30 minutes.

The settings from one machine to the next automatically transferred over, not just the saved game but all the settings. On the 5090 I used a new slot, started over on Ultra Violence. I may two step this game with both machines. Kinda fun so far.
 
Noticed some fuckery with the old drivers in level 2. Seems I will need to upgrade to new drivers.
I am getting about 170 fps normally with 4K DLSS Q and 2X FG.
Loving it.
 
The patch they released seems to have tanked my 6 core performance by having stutters every 1-2 seconds where before there were none.

Going to have to decide on cheaping out with a 9700x, going 9800x3d/9950x3d or being silly and buying a 265k. (Or waiting to see if the stutters get patched out)

What made Mick Gordon 's soundtracks so good was because of the method he created when initially told by id to not use guitars. In this game I guess they said "fuck it" and that is all there is in this game. Nothing but droning metal guitar riffs and nothing has stood out to me so far after about 5 hours. It really is a black mark on an otherwise great game.

yeah the music sound like a weak attempt at copying the og's but the surround mix sounds pretty damn good.

I really need to grab the OSTs for 2016 and Eternal so that I can listen to them without having to play at the same time - those were some of the most badass soundtracks to ever grace games.

Mick Gordon and Andrew Hulshult have made some absolutely killer songs and I'll typically buy any game if I see that Hulshult has done the soundtrack just based on that alone.

There was unfortunately a lot of controversy surrounding id/Mick/Bethesda that no doubt led to him not being involved with Doom: The Dark Ages and I will say that if most of what is in this video is true, fuck Marty Stratton.

No problems here with the latest drivers and my 3080 is putting in the work— I'm seeing 60 fps on Ultra Nightmare at 1080 or 60 fps at 4K on Low settings, No DLSS, etc. As for VRAM usage, it's bumping up against it's 10GB limit at 4K. I wish they had included a proper benchmark, but at least I can keep an eye on my frame rates with the built-in counter. Visually, it's about a draw as to which I prefer as they both look great. My 5070 Ti is out for delivery today so I can't wait to see how good it looks with everything cranked up tonight!

I'm showing the game's only using 10GB on my 5090. Running everything on Ultra-Nightmare settings wise and with DLSS and 2x frame generation its getting around 200FPS. I've seen it hit the 240FPS range and go as low as 170 or so. I'm going to try using DLAA later and see how that goes.
 
Think I'll pick this up once path tracing drops

I really liked 2016 and really disliked eternal so hopefully this hits the right chord ..
 
its better than eternal, but not too keen on the constant need for blocking/parrying...

Ah, yeah, that is only the first mission. The missions are admittedly quite long, so I appreciate the checkpoint markers that indicate a point of no return for secret hunting. I've only been doing one a night, otherwise I would not be able to stop and get up for work in the morning.
 
I was going to wait for a sale, but I think you guys are convincing me to just send it. I preferred 2016 over Eternal. I'm *almost* done with my replay of Oblivion. Does it support 4x frame gen or is 2x the only frame gen option? If I'm going to have fake frames, I want more of them. :LOL:

I think only 5000 series cards dlss frame gen.
 
Good thing I discovered a 3 month gamepass (4 month with free 1 month trial on top) code from an old gpu order to use, hopefully can complete this and Stalker 2 ...
 
I only played for about 20 minutes this morning but it seems like a game I’ll enjoy much more than eternal. Doom is the kind of game I just want to get in and start blasting. I don’t want to thinking about how I’m gonna use my ammo or figure out a puzzle and perfect my timing to get to the next check point.

Performance seems good and super smooth. About 100fps at ultra nightmare settings 3440x1440 100% resolution scale on sig machine.

Ammo starts becoming an issue around mission 4. I found myself running out a lot, so I needed to melee more often to get more. The ammo pickups in arenas start to appear to reflect the design expectations of you using particular weapons for certain encounters. It seems like after you pick up the Skull Crusher that they expect you to use it a lot for the rest of the mission, and it is good for packed fodder, but otherwise I don't like it that much, and its upgrades don't look like anything exciting. Like I said earlier, the Shotgun becomes OP with a couple upgrades, so I've been using it the most.

nice! i just found out that ms has been charging me every month, even when i got free ones from rewards points, so i dug into it... apparently you have to apply those manually. so i have 4 free months stacked up, unsubbed....
 
OK, I feel dumb. I though the soundtrack shown in the YouTube videos wasn't actually the soundtrack for the game, but rather a royalty free streaming song which is why it seemed so out of place! Please disregard my previous post about how taken back I was by the lame sounding soundtrack.

Still, really disappointing about the music, that was such a huge part of the appeal.

Glad to see the general consensus that it’s better than Eternal though.
 
Tried this on my 2nd PC with the 5080 and it plays great as well. This game has lived up to the hype so far in my book.

Got a bit more game time in, I do drop to around 80fps in heavy combat but still silky smooth. Frame time suggests CPU is the main bottleneck.
 
player numbers on Steam are pretty low compared to Eternal and Doom (2016)...yes Game Pass changes things a bit but it still seems like a disappointment...Dark Ages sounds like a decent game but it also feels like a step down from Eternal and even Doom (2016)...besides the graphics it doesn't really seem to innovate like Eternal did
