DOOM: The Dark Ages

player numbers on Steam are pretty low compared to Eternal and Doom (2016)...yes Game Pass changes things a bit but it still seems like a disappointment...Dark Ages sounds like a decent game but it also feels like a step down from Eternal and even Doom (2016)...besides the graphics it doesn't really seem to innovate like Eternal did
Why do people put so much stock in player numbers on steam? Game is out on lots of platforms and is included in game pass so that will have an influence on the steam numbers. Also it is a single player game so it doesn't really matter if you are the only one playing as long as you have fun.

It innovates more than Eternal in many ways. Eternal wasn't really that innovative as Control had actually done a lot of the same stuff in third person prior to that and probably other games as well. The parrying system makes it play very different to other FPS games and I haven't played any other shooters that felt like the Dark Ages does.

I prefer the Dark Ages to 2016 as the combat feels much more dynamic and faster. Eternal had good combat, but quite a few of the Arenas where a bit small. To me, Dark Ages feels a bit like a hybrid between the two with large arenas, more enemies and more options in combat. Only played the first 5 levels, but it feels a bit more varied than the previous games and if it keeps it up then it is probably my favorite out of the 3.

Are you judging after playing a decent part of the game or just concluding based on watching other people playing?

I'm not saying it's a bad game...criticizing aspects of a game doesn't mean someone hates it...I haven't played it yet but just looking at reviews and other people's impressions...if it happens to be the 3rd best game of the recent trilogy it just means it's not as good as Doom (2016) and Eternal...it doesn't make it a bad game

IMO it is the best game of the last three. DOOM 2016 was good, and Eternal had too much platforming for a DOOM game, while the Dark Ages is a true stand and fight game which is what DOOM was always about. Once you play it you'll be hooked.

but for people who loved Eternal I think the rankings might change...Eternal was very polarizing...if you loved it I don't think the slower, more deliberate combat of Dark Ages will be looked upon as an improvement

This combat is not slower. If you're moving slow, you're dead, at least on Ultra Violence. If you don't have complete battlefield awareness, you're dead. You should actually play the game instead of regurgitating internet discourse. The Slayer's running speed feels as fast as the old games, possibly faster. At this point I would put this game a close second to Eternal. That's right, I think it's better than everyone's beloved 2016.

But you also think it’s worse than Eternal, which isn’t exactly the prevailing sentiment.

exactly...that's what I'm saying...some people are so quick to defend every game that they don't even understand what people are trying to say

I understand what they're trying to say, and I'm saying they're wrong. I keep seeing complaints that the game is slow, but that is objectively wrong.

Is it on gamepass?

I know people love gamepass because it's cheap, but if microsoft doesn't ditch it it's going to kill prominent studios that do good work.

I haven't read a single review saying the game is slow...you're taking the word slow in a literal sense...that's not what I or others mean...I was comparing it to Eternal and saying it only in relation to its hyper fast, twitchy, jumpy movement...again I'm not saying Dark Ages is not fast or twitchy

Definitely not a step down but a step up from Eternal in my view.

like I said it all depends on your feelings about Eternal...I'm guessing you did not like Eternal as much as Doom (2016)...I liked Eternal better...where you fall on Dark Ages will depend on which game you liked better

I'd like to see a study on the number of people that played a game on Game Pass (or Ubisoft+ etc) and then later decided to buy that game...I'm guessing the numbers would be pretty low

I liked Eternal and I liked original. But this is my favorite of the 3, except for flying / mech sessions, but those are not huge part of gameplay loop. Also its very fast, no idea why people are saying its slow. Moving around with shield can almost make me dizzy.

I actually did this with Starfield. I played it on Gamepass not knowing if I'd like it or not. I ended up liking the ship builder enough to buy the game. The main reason I did that is to just get the game, and stop paying for Gamepass. I'm not a fan of monthly service fees. Normally I wouldn't do this as I'll finish a game on Gamepass or whatever, then drop the service until something else comes along that makes me get it again.

that's how I always use Game Pass...use it for a month, play a game I'm interested in and cancel...re-sub at a later date...it only makes sense if you use it for a month or so and cancel it...or you play a ton of games on it which makes the monthly fee worth it...but even then I rarely use Game Pass now as I only use it for games I'm on the fence about...most games I'm really interested in I will buy at launch or wait a few months for a sale...PC prices drop so fast that it makes Game Pass less appealing

if you end up buying a game after playing it on Game Pass then you've paid for the subscription and whatever price you ended up paying for the game...but it seems a lot of gamers nowadays don't care about owning their games and just want to play as many games as possible

I don't like them either, buying a game once in a while is cheaper to me than leaving a subscription service on and forgetting about it. I left Apple TV on for a year and was beside myself for a few days. Also knowing that I own the game and can come back years later and play it is a big deal. There's a reasonable chance game pass games just disappear because you don't actually own anything.

I bought Starfield on Steam for two reasons. The first of which is that I knew I'd get enough hours in the ship builder alone to be worth the price of admission. Meaning that I would save money by buying it over keeping Game Pass going for months on end for that one title. The second reason is that the Steam version is much easier to mod and there are even mods that don't work at all on the Game Pass version.

played a bit more this morning, man im getting bad at these, reaction times has slowed...
got settings a little more tweaked and have settled on 1440/med/fsr quality and its now staying in the high 50s and up to my 75 limit.
looks decent and plays good.

I'm bored, so i'm gonna try this game on an i7 9700k + 2080Ti. Curious if i can get 60 fps on 7 year old hardware

3440 x 1440 is precisely where i'm at lol. I already know native is out of the question
My guess is somewhere between 55 and 65 FPS with DLSS quality. The game runs so smooth, with excellent frame pacing, that 80 fps feels as good or better than 150 FPS in a lot of other game.

Was getting between 44-60 fps during the main battle sequence at the end of chapter 1. 3440x1440 DLSS quality, high preset. CPU was marginally more limiting than GPU at these settings but it was pretty well balanced for the most part.

Went even lower end. Lowest end hardware I have that's actually assembled

R7 2700 @ 4GHz
RX 6700XT
1080p display

Ran high preset with FSR quality

While it managed around 60 fps, the frame times were not good and felt like constant micro stutter. Image quality was also kinda crappy.

I've only played 30 mins, but I'm enjoying it so far. It hits the feels. Move quickly, kill faster.
I hope it does not do the Eternal thing, where Magic Enemies had Magic Defense and you must use Weapon Z.

There is a little of that in all honesty. Of course, you can use a brute force approach and not do that in a lot of those cases but its inefficient to say the least. Most of this revolves around the shield mechanic in the game. Though there are dudes with energy shields that work best if you hit them with the plasma gun. Their shields will overload and explode doing massive damage to the crowds. A lot of the combat revolves around the parry system more than things like that though. That said, I find it works pretty well and feels satisfying. The game's sound design has a lot to do with that. The sound track is somewhat weak, but the sound effects and what not are pretty solid.

agree on that. the music is not mick, but the effects and mix are awesome and uses atmos/dtsx properly for height speakers. crows overhead in a tree was cool and tracked correctly as i looked around, not just jumped speaker to speaker, and i can hear the fleshy tentacles "in the ceiling".

a cheap 5600 or 5800xt will fix this instantly
