Doom III: Project Mars City (Comments Thread)

I would think twice about using the lilliput monitor. The placement has to be done well. If you have it on a 25-30 degrees vertical tilt in realtionship to your eyes...it will be very difficult to see...I have one sitting on my desk right now. For my upcoming mod it'll work fine because it'll be at eye-level. If its not at eye level its really hard to see...really washed out from up top and if you look from the bottom so dark that you cant see anything. also the backlight shows trhough the top and the left and right sides so you have paint it, if you want to stop that. BTW great project.

That is ganna be a case to die for!!!
How about when the airlock doors open it gives off a soft red glow pulsating beneathe the fog of smoke just as one of the Doom3 creatures jumps out and scares the shit out of your friends the first time they see it. LOL :p
Also you could have the etched window with a red light coming from the bottom and a yellow light pertruding say midway to the top to simulate a flame. Better yet add a strobe light inside that reflects the etched drawing from the inside to the outside of the case.

yes the A64 does run better with doom 3 but you have to remember its not only going to be used for doom 3. its going to be used for internet and other gaming needs (i suppose) then the p4 would be the better choise. the p4 runs at 3.4ghz (its also the extreme edition[the EE runs about $1000]) and if your talking 3200+ its not close. the 3200 runs at 2ghz - 2.2ghz

also CrimsonSky why not get DDR2?

DDR533 is DDR2.....PC4200 I believe. The i925X Chipset only supports DDR2 and PCI X.
 
Crimson I was thinking how to light up ur window and i came up with this idea. Use UV paint and just fill those tiny cuts with it. Install few UV cold cathodes and ull be looking awesome. BTW great work on that mod. :D

UV will look like quite garish methinks...like a rock poster. I have ultrabright red ccfls i'm gonna use.

I was going to have a Chainsaw fangrill cut from aluminum--however I was persuaded to make a reproduction from the game. I will use this gunsight grill as a base (with crosshairs removed) for it. The grill will be on the 120mm fan inside the airlock, which will be lit with several LED's. I might make a silicon mold of this grill when complete, so I can reproduce them and sell 'em. :D


I will model the chainsaw in plastic sheets to create layers until it is built up. Then I'll carve and shape. Here you see just the motor and handle assembly

I think ur missing the point of it being the chainsaw from the game. And it looks like it doesnmt need much more work apart from the saw chain itself.

I understand the point. I just figure it be easier to paint a replica chainsaw to match than making one from plexi. anywhoo I know Crimson will do a hell of a job either way. pardon the pun ;)
 
I can't wait to see how things pan out. I continue to be astounded by the quality of workmanship and the attention to detail that has gone into this mod. Well done that man!

I suppose it's only a matter of time before you do a SFF SoulCube as a companion piece :)

Have you thought about using 555timers and transisistors to control the events of turning on your case. I know your going to sound mod and servo your drives but you may not want all that happening at once. With the 555 timers you could say play a sound like the sound of a door then have your door open with that sound. After that your drive bays coudl open up not all at once but in sequence. Its just one of those things that would add detail to your project so the viewer of the case isnt overstimulated buy al the things going at once.

The six channels of audio on that board can be controleld and played independently of one another, or in any 6 combinations of those channels up to 4 minutes long. For instance I simply branch off the power button to go to the sound board as well as the mobo..there ya have it...door sound. I can also have a simple ASCII app written for me to trigger sounds with windows events, through the RS232 connection.

what about the timings foor the doors and such?
I also ment not jsut for the soudn but the other things like the monster you want on your case. You could time his movement begin to the sound so he dosnt move when you start the system adn have the soudn play after. Its just a thought.
Btw I really think yours and meshies webcam lab is a cool idea.

Now all you need is another 120mm grill? Bonz made one Doom³ grill, and it's not bad.. Although really shiny, he dumped like a gallon of clear coat on it, apparently. Either way, you'd probably make another one yourself. So, what's the other one going to be?

By the way, the background in Doom II, when you pass a level, I always found it awesome. Here's an image:

Maybe you could scultp it somewhere inside? Or you could have it as an alternate window etching, to see which works better? (I have nothing against the pentagram, myself.. but it can't hurt to try). Or maybe... well I don't know. But it sure looks cool.
 
I just can't get over the amount of patience you (and other "super-modders") have. I mean I've got my system in a fairly standard case and I just ordered a big ass full tower (need the room for watercooling gear) and everytime I think of a cool way to mod it I say... "I don't have the patience to do it right and I'll never finish it".

If you find yourself doing something you love, you'll find all the patience in the world. Once I bought a plastic model of RAH-66 Comanche helicopter, and I didn't sleep for two days in a row untill it was completely finished. It's in my cupboard now, and looks pimpin.
