Dishonored

Who says it's a gamble?

Mercifully, they are only the publisher on this.

It's a gamble because you haven;t even tried the game yet and don't know how the storyline will be, how many bugs it will have, how enjoyable the game play will be, and how long it will be.

Isn't that pretty much every game purchase at that rate?

Borderlands 2 was $36 on green man gaming, literally for months on end. I have to agree, that I like to buy games when they're below $60, even if I have the cash to burn. I just like my deals...

Absolutely. Why not take a great deal if you can get it?

Persona 4 and NFL 13 as AAA titles?...that's a stretch

I suppose they were made by the small indie studios like EA and Atlus on a $5 budget. :p

AAA just means "high quality" from an established studio, not necessarily millions and millions in budget.

? Of course not. I bought Deux Ex 6 months after it's release for only $16. I knew from reviews, friends, forum posts, and "lets plays" that it was a good game when I purchased it that catered to the games that I like to play.

Buying a game without any of that information on release date but possibly biased reviews is buying blindly.

How about blindly pre-purchasing unannounced DLC? :D

Development on Arkane's new stealth-action game finished ahead of worldwide launch early next month.

After three years of work, development on Arkane Studios' new stealth-action game Dishonored has come to a close. Publisher Bethesda announced today that the game has gone gold ahead of its worldwide release early next month.

Dishonored has the honor of going gold.
Dishonored ships for the PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 in North America and France on October 9, with subsequent releases following in Australia and Spain on October 11, and across Europe October 12.

Dishonored is a first-person action game that puts players in the boots of Corvo, an assassin tasked with protecting the empress of a stylized steampunk city known as Dunwall.

The game features the voice work of a range of film celebrities, including Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher, Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, Thelma & Louise), and Brad Dourif (Lord of the Rings, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest).

gone gold early?...the game is 1.5 weeks away from release...isn't is supposed to go gold around this time

Yes, I would personally prefer this type of DLC never was developed in the first place. It doesn't benefit the customer. It is designed to benefit the individual retailers. Put those extra devs to work on more story content and side missions, release it as an expansion, watch me buy it.

The whole idea that part of the develoment money was used for pre-order bonus gimmicks, but only a small group will be able to enjoy each part is kinda lame. We are all basically paying for all of it, but you'd have to buy it separately to access it all. This isn't in my favor.

I'm not sure why you'd be so confused as to why consumers are worried about their best interests.

I should have clarified--I'm not in-favor of how they're rolling out Dishonored, where a certain "bonus" pack is only available at one retailer and you have to guess how you'll want to play in order to pre-purchase the correct bonus pack. That's crap and I've been quite vocal about that to friends when discussing this game.

If a game is nearing completion and they're waiting for some additional art assets or sound assets (not all actors are available 24/7 to do voice acting, or they need to wait for game changes to be finalized, as an example) then what's the harm in saying, "Well we were going to start developing DLC at this point, let's get the boys to work and see if we can kick out some DLC closer to the time the game will ultimately be released"? Some people are such sissies when it comes to delineation of financial responsibility within a company. I'd be shocked if they understood that employees cost money and their time is managed by supervisors and executives who do more than simply provide sound bites and news article quotes for upcoming titles.

Perhaps consumers would be happier if the entire development staff went off to work on the next project in the hopper, then came back in 3 months to write that DLC, then went back to the other project to continue on it...? I'm not sure I understand what consumers want, other than "no DLC/expansions/paid updates to gameplay and content" (which won't happen) so I don't know how best to address the issue. I see lots of complaining and the end result is some gamers feel like every game should be released in a 100% done and completed state, with no reference to potential expansions, DLC or gameplay enhancements (basically: if it isn't in the game then it won't ever be in the game, thus the game is "done".) Isn't that a bit unrealistic given the digital medium used to convey the developer's (and publisher's) product?

I'm fine with devs working on DLC or expansion content after their projects are done or the game has gone gold. I found the NPC in DA:O who basically tells you to go buy DLC to access a small sidequest fairly ridiculous, though. Business needs to be profitable, but part of establishing a franchise and paving the way for more money is also having good tact.

Really looking forward to it. :)

^^ This. Sums it up neatly.

isn't the Dishonored pre-order 'exclusive' DLC only exclusive in that you get the items earlier then other players...won't all the items be available to players later in the game?...I remember Deus Ex: Human Revolution had a whole bunch of pre-order exclusives but most of it was just early access items...only 'exclusive' was the GameSpot Tracer Tong mission

The length of a game is always important, especially when multiplayer isn't a viable means of extending the experience.

And although Bethesda typically produces some of the biggest and longest games in existence, one has to remember two things concerning their new title, Dishonored: Firstly, Arkane Studios made it, and secondly, it's not a giant open-world sandbox adventure like The Elder Scrolls.

Therefore, we shouldn't be surprised to hear early length estimates coming in at only 12-20 hours. That may seem a little low to some ardent gamers and in fact...it is. According to a post made by level designer Dan Todd in Bethesda's official forums, the game will take a minimum of 22 hours.

"My ghost and no kills play through took 22 hours. That's without exploring every nook and cranny, and knowing the solution to everything beforehand. It should take more thorough/inexperienced players a bit longer than that."

So if you don't happen to know the solution to every last situation and you weren't involved in the actual creation of the game, maybe 25-30 hours is more accurate. It's also true that you can play through this adventure any way you choose; hence, two play-throughs don't have to be exactly the same... So experiment to your heart's content!

the preorder exclusives are fucking ridiculous for Dishonored

4 different retailers all offering different DLC and bonuses

USB powered lanterns
Tarot cards....

shit like this just makes me want to wait when the game is $25 in 6 months

the system requirements state that the game is enhanced for 64-bit and multi core CPU's...hopefully this is not just marketing BS but really takes advantage of 4-6 cores + 64-bit OS

Reviewers all around the net are insinuating that the game is good (they can't talk about it before the NDA lifts next week).

It had better be given the pedigree and three years worth of work.

any livestream ?

Nothing new. If you put Dishonored livestream in a search engine right now you'll see some recent stuff from IGN and some others. I think it's all console version but you'll get something to chew on at least. ;)

Looks very intriguing. Would like to play but will probably wait until stream winter salute or black Friday. More and more games are 25-50% of on blACK FRIDAY

I will now try to predict the most common complaints, in the hope that Karma won't allow me to be right.

"Blink is too powerful", "The levels are too small", "The save system is crap", "Annoying loading times"

people need to stfu about single issues and just get on with enjoying the content. *everything* can be made better - you could always be more intelligent, more attractive, funnier, kinder, etc...ultimately we just have to be judged by what we're given. as long as it doesn't appear the dev was phoning it in, I imagine most decisions had a reason behind them.

I'm hopeful, given what I've heard from the devs, that the title is fairly unique and built by people who want to make a game they love. I have preordered, and along with X-Com I can't think of another game I'm excited for this holiday season.

You do know eloj was being sarcastic with is probably all too accurate and inevitable predictions, yes? ;)

Same here. If I get something comparable to Deus Ex HR I'm going to be pretty happy.

It's nice to see these kinds of games coming back. Next year we're going to have Bioshock Infinite and a new Thief game. This is great news as far as I'm concerned for whatever you would call this genre.

hahah probably not, a few drinks and age both contribute to my lack of perception. Perhaps it's also a bit of frustration with a lot of PC gamers nowadays acting as entitled as they do.

Fingers crossed both Dishonored and X-Com live up to their hype. I'm just excited to play something different!

So do most other games. Sadly demos are exceptions not norms.

But it's one of those borderline games, though I did like bioshock...(it does rather seem like bioshock infinite, especially the woman...). It might be really good, but it might also be really crap. So it would be nice to get hands on with it, which might sway it into the buy now rather than "wait for it to be cheap" category.

Though...some games with demos seem like they focused on the demo, and then once you get the game, you shouldn't have really bothered. As the demo has 90% of all the good bits in. :D

If there was any doubt, I am in fact "long" on this game. Unfortunately we have to wait till friday for it to release up here in the cold north, but I'm excited for this weekend.

I really like TB's video because he goes through the options and usually does a great job determining how bad or good the port is. In this case, the port is good.
