Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

Here's the important highlights of the article I believe you guys are discussing. Was posted over at Diablofans by Coel.

At 0 MF you see a legendary once per 500 elite packs, at 375% after 5 stacks it's more like one per 84 packs. And 25-50% of your legendaries will come from trash, depending on how thoroughly you clear zones.

A few other notes from the article:

Each item an elite pack drops has about a 0.05% chance to be legendary before MF is applied, and they drop at most 5 tems (with 5 stacks of NV).

The math thus suggests you get almost exactly 1 legendary per 500 elite pack kills with no MF and no Npehlaem Valor.

Upping this to 300% base MF, 75% MF from Nephalem Valor, and accounting for the extra NV drop (which can be legendary), the math suggests you will get an average of 1 legendary drop per 84 elite pack kills.

At max MF, Rough math suggests that if you kill most or all trash mobs, about half of your legendaries will drop from them. If you kill about a third of the trash mobs you see, it'll be more like 25%.

Because 5 stacks guarantees you 1 rare per elite kill, very high MF causes a MUCH greater increase in the number of legendaries you see over time than rares you see over time. At 5 stacks each rare pack gives 1-5 rares no matter what MF you have, and that minimum of 1 means MF isn't giving you a huge percentage boost in rares seen.

Another little known fact is that the rare you get from 5-stacks is disproportionately likely to be 4 property, and no more likely to be 5/6 property or legendary than any other drop from an elite monster. Getting an extra drop from the monster means better loot over time, but any time you see just 1 yellow item drop from an elite at 5 stacks it is MUCH more likely to be 4 property than any other yellow item.

Legendary items are so extremely rare that you will not see many of them no matter what MF you have. You'll also see great variation - while one per 84 packs is much more than one per 500 packs, statistically you'll still occasionally see two back to back or go much longer than the "average" number of elite packs inbetween kills.

FYI, this was also before they doubled the drop rates I believe. So possibly cut those numbers in half, so 1 in 42 packs which is believable since I "feel" like I average a legendary per run and I've never counted but I would guess that I kill 30-40 packs per run. Sometimes I get 2 or more and sometimes none.

However I was wondering if the 300 MF giving an ~80% chance at 500 drops was referring to 300MF prior (gear/paragon) to getting 5 stacks, or was inclusive of the extra MF you get from 5 stacks.

Sorry if I was unclear. The article describes 300 mf prior to NV stacks, so if you're at mp0, you'd have 375 mf with 5 stacks. The article basically states that if you're at 300 mf or nearing 300 mf with paragon/gear and/or at the cap BEFORE the 5 nv stacks, you have ~80% chance of a legendary item dropping in a full act 3 clear. Of course this is not always going to be the case. RNG is still RNG.

I've been running with my Barb lately. Got him to PLvl 6, and I'm running pubs since they're quick. I've come across this dude, GhostTathag twice now. Man is he annoying. He's a Plvl 68, and clearly, just owns face. He sprints through, not even allowing you time to pick up your loot. And seeing as he kills everything, you get barely any experience. WTF is he doing in pubs... I'm just going to quit any games he joins from now on. Anyway, just wanted to rant about that.

Spinner barbs are solo classes. This is what they do. The problem is they don't realize it half the time. They're built for movement speed and killing efficiency.

Why would that guy be running pubs anyway? You can't pub with any MP on, seems like it would be a waste of his time unless he's just out to be a troll.

Because spinner barbs level in mp0 - 1 anyway. He's prob bored. Wanted company. lol

Hmm, you're conflicting. I know that the NV, other than the extra MF, won't effect legendary drops. However I was wondering if the 300 MF giving an ~80% chance at 500 drops was referring to 300MF prior (gear/paragon) to getting 5 stacks, or was inclusive of the extra MF you get from 5 stacks.

Since it doesn't matter, just assume its after nv stacks reach 5 since you'll be at 5-stacks most of the run. The ~80% chance of having at least one legendary drop in a full act 3 run is with 225%mf and mp0 before NV.

Is this game worth picking up ? I see it on sale for $39 now.

My two Brothers and I loved D2 back in the day, looking to maybe pick this, and all play together. How can the three of us play together in CoOp mode through the single player game ? How do we going about setting that up, and play together ?

No, not really. You might as well get torchlight 2 or POE or another game on steam. D3 was broken and is broken. It is better now but still horribly broken. The game is just not very good, I can't be more clear. It really starts after 100 hours of boring effortless repetition, and eventually becomes 300 hours of boring repetitive auctioneering.

If your idea of a good time is playing the slot machines at the casino, I highly recommend d3. If you do anything else at the casino I suggest a different game

(I'm going to put cost in terms of Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers) Win!

I sniped it for about 15 JBCs, I would think this one would normally go for about 20-25 JBCs. Higher DPS up than I was originally aiming for (first goal was to have at least 20k dps upgrade). Its weird, I gain 20 RA over my current ammy, I lose 84 dex (about 2% dodge) and it calls it a push for protection. In my eyes, it should be a hat trick upgrade.

Edit: so this upgrade is about a 10% dps upgrade, but I dropped improved archon (25% more damage dealt in archon mode) for teleport. It feels like a dps loss, but the gains I have from teleport are amazing. I never drop archon except when vendoring, and my death rate has dropped to zero (so far). I'll have to do some calculations, but I'm sure the switch to teleport in MP4 should net me higher exp/hour than before.

I actually just returned to D3 recently.. After about 5 months off.. I found it to be much more balanced.. specially in inferno and with me being a wiz its a lot better haha..

Another attempt at mp10 ubers. I failed at first since I made the game, invited folks, but picked the wrong quest. We didn't realize til we got 5 stacks. Rdzona was kind enough to stay.

Popped my RL friends ubers cherry. He's a barb. I just wanted him to get his Hellfire ring for the 35% xp boost. I figured we can try 4 man, and if we fail, I'll make it easy on the team and drop so it's a 3 man game. I would just open the portals. I basically asked if Yoshi could carry the other guy in the game while Rdzona basically spun to win, which he can do quite admirably. If d3 had Chuck Norris, it'd be Rdzona.

First two portals went pretty great. First one was Ghom/Rak combo. Second was SK/Siegebreaker. Final portal was a fight of epic proportions - despite us not beating the encounter - since 3 of us died while Rdzona spun to win...and actually managed to res us. In the end we died again, and he tried soloing Leoeric and the evil bish Mag. Got Leoric down, managed to ress a few more folks, but then died himself after. Timer ran out shortly after on NV stacks anyway, and we wiped. Snake was pressed on time and had to go after. A valiant attempt indeed it was.

So it was down to us 3. Had to get 5 more stacks. Skipped a particular reflect mob since we kept dying, but after that, we eventually got the 5 stacks. Then we tried Loeric/Mag again. Promptly wiped the first, I dunno, 4 or 5 times. Then we got in a groove and lasted a few minutes. Was finally about to throw in the towel when I decided I'll stay for one last attempt before Yoshi solos the encounter. Don't recall too much of what happened, but I ressed my friend a few times during the encounter. Think I ressed Yoshi once or twice. It got really insane when Leoric finally died, and both Yoshi and my friend died. Didn't think it was possible to get a ress off, let alone two, not with my 12% run speed. But, I dragged Maghda to the opposite corner of the map since both corpses were in one corner. Doubled back and managed to get both resses off just as Maghda's orbs were coming my way.

And then we mopped the floor with Mag's face.

All for 3 more fail Hellfire rings. :D But, in the end, my friend got his XP ring.

Indeed, it was quite hectic lol. Thanks to Rdzona for being as patient with us as he was. I'm just glad we were still able to finish it up as a group, in an epic way. :)

Cool, I'm glad you guys were able to finish it up. I wish I could've stayed. Oh well, hopefully we'll be doing more in the future as I'm still chasing down that epic hellfire ring. One of these days :)

Found a nice sword last night :

~924 DPS

(damage mods, I think it was arcane dmg and +% dmg modifier)
169 Dex
98% CHD
Socket

Could have replaced my current monk's weapon (a 2.2K DPS upgrade on paper without gem from my OH Shenlong's. Equipped it was a 1.5K DPS drop without gem. Probably a 5k DPS upgrade with gem tho.

Decided to sell it on the AH since a monk using a sword doesn't fit in my mind :D So I kept my shenlongs even if the DPS was a little lower. :p

Putted it at 100M bid 300M BIN... sold in less than an hour  255M in my pockets :)

Edit : Also the sword had 2.5% Lifesteal

Was this on US servers? I almost can't even believe that. I was debating on buying a sword very similar to this except it was closer to 1K dps, 180 str, 98 CD and OS, AND increased AS, so it was like a 1.51 sword. And the winning bid was 55M. Either you're on EU which I heard was more expensive or I would say you got extremely lucky for a low 9xx dps sword for 300M.

But forgot to add and I just remember, it had 2.5% Lifesteal :p Considering the last description I made, I understand you wouldn't believe me.

When I found the weapon I was on playing with a friend and I was like : yeah that will fetch me a couple of hundred millions and he was like maybe not hundred.

I was just putting the amount of 100M/300M BIN just to see if it would see... and it did... pretty fast! Comparable weapons were a 9xx DPS sword with a 324M Bid (don't know if it was a bid or starting price tho)

I don't want to get into a mega-post about it, but I'm starting to get sick of DH. It's insulting that barb can virtually never die for a fraction of the cost of DH, and essentially deal more AOE damage. DH is not superior at anything in comparison to any other class, and that is innately a problem (its also been nerfed multiple times, and never had any meaningful buffs). I'm not sure if it's worth the time to wait for the next patch just to see if something changes, or just sell everything and move to another class... preferably something with more control.

I'm thinking WD. I wouldn't mind Wizard either, but I think the only Wizard type worth pursuing is CM, but CM is super gear dependent (due to nerfs). I would much rather play a ranged class, although Monk is slightly tempting, as it would take the least effort to move to. I absolutely don't want to play Barb.

Comments, suggestions?

I feel you on all accounts. I started as a DH. DH was my first 60. Then I switched to monk and never looked back. The only reason I made the switch was because my RL friends needed a tank. I didn't enjoy the class as much as DH at the time. It wasn't actually until I was past level 60 and just trying to farm content that I enjoyed the class, after I made a switch to tornado spam.

My fun is directly proportional to the number of tornadoes on screen at once! :p

Right now, I don't think there is any other class that can dominate content as easily as a barb and for as little, but hey. The class should be fun to play. I find the monk fun. I find the barb not so much fun, so I can't really hate on them. They are insanely good in mp10 stuff. In a way, they do carry the team. For that, they will always have my respect.

Sometimes I do wonder how insane I could have geared a barb with the 400+ million or so I spent on my monk.

I've got all 5 classes leveled to 60, so I have a bit of experience with all of them. I basically just leveled them to 60 and stopped however...

I got my friend to play, and I suggested WD to him. I would say it seems like the class that has the most fun, and has a lot of diversity in play type.

It's also a class where virtually all of its defense is also offense, something that DH lacks, this is something that I seriously could write a paper about, as I've thought actually pretty hard at "why" DH has problems, especially regarding control.

Hex, Gargantuan, Terror, Dogs, Unrelenting Grasp, etc all are excellent and can be worked into various builds easily.

I played Monk for a little bit, just transferred all my DH gear over and threw on some decent weps I had lying around, and immediately I felt almost how unfair it was the Monk can just tank roll everything.

DH essentially has to run from everything, whereas Monk and Barb simply run into everything. CM Wizard also runs into stuff, and it seems a well controlled WD can more or less hold its ground. It's frustrating...

The DH class can control mobs pretty good as long as you can set up the pull in advance. It's the fact that they die so fast when presented with chaotic situations that they fail so hard. Especially when compared to Barbarian or Monk where more chaos just means more mobs to heal off of. If you're playing a DH solo I would suggest that you pick a MP level where elites that cluster together die within 30 secs of you attacking them. With such a short Time To Kill window you can shine as everything will be dead before the "S" hits the fan.

Of course I think it's ironic that my 24k dps Monk can do a higher MP level than my 95k dps DH. Oh and the Monk is much faster killing the mobs in MP(3) than my DH as it never dies unless I'm watching a video on youtube too intently. On MP(3) a mob can teleport and literally 1 shot my DH. On my Monk I run and pull more of those mobs so I can heal faster so I can run and pull more mobs.

I got into an argument with a long time buddy over my game play. So he's doing MP(3) runs on his Barbarian that looks like it is geared enough for MP(7). He invites me to the group on my DH. He takes off and literally pulls the entire map at one time and starts crying damn near real tears that I can't keep up. I'm like dude if you stop leaving 150 mobs alive to shoot at me maybe I could keep up. He barks back that they will eventually die in his tornado. I quip that you know they still do dps while they are in your tornado right? And since you're 100 miles away the person they are attacking is me.

Since he was foaming at the mouth I grabbed my low dps set with ridiculous survival off my Monk. Specced my DH for speed and survival to give it another go. Less than a minute into the run he's bitching that I can't kill stuff as fast as before. I'm like well you know you should be doing MP(7) with that gear... Do you have a problem with waiting an extra second for the mobs to die? He was like yea because when I play solo I would have cleared all of Act III in this amount of time!

Lots of text

I said I wouldn't do this... but here goes... this is the "short" version of the rant.....

Right, I agree with everything you're saying, and it's something that Blizzard has continuously ignored when it comes to the DH class.

The big problem that I have realized (and maybe either Blizzard and most people haven't yet) is actually Discipline. DH's are the only class with two resource pools. That sounds great at first, until you realize that the reason for the two pools is in place of CD's, or simply original pool cost.

As a result, DH is forced to run 3-4 skills minimum that use Discipline. Yeap, stand back, I realize that sounds counter-intuitive, but it's true.

Because Discipline is split from Hatred, defensive skills are intrinsically split from offensive skills. In the case of Barb/WD/Monk, you name it, their best skills are ones that cover both Offense and Defense simultaneously.

WD as an example has Gargantuan/Dogs/Grasp of the Dead/Terror/Hex etc. As a result of this they can control situations and deal damage (or in the case of Hex, have their damage amplified).

DH doesn't have this. Sure, DH can lay caltrops, but it then has to DPS with other skills. DH's pets are useless and can't really tank. This wasn't really a problem before they started nerfing DH skills. When Shadow Power/Gloom gave 65% defense and more life leech, it was possible to manage the Discipline problem, and actually tank and take hits from mobs. But they took that away. They also took away 3 Second Smoke Screen making it not a viable skill, and then basically a non-viable build. Since it's impossible to use both Shadow Power and Smoke Screen in the same build as they both take 14 Discipline, all DH's are essentially forced to use Shadow Power in order to be viable, if for no other reason than Reflect Damage mobs, and Extra Fast mobs, or anything that can close the gap and is essentially inescapable. If it was another class it would be viable to run both Shadow Power and Smoke Screen, as both skills would either take the energy from the pool that was built up, OR it would be a CD.

Since every DH is more or less forced to run Shadow Power they are more or less screwed if they ever get locked by a "Frozen" mob as Smoke Screen is the only DH skill that can break from every jail effect (there are quite a few of these, even Nightmare can be terrible as it can cause the player to run into Arcane Sentries, stand in Molten, or just get beaten on). In other words, in that situation DH is screwed. This takes up slot #2: Vault. Because there isn't a universal break other than Smoke Screen, and because one slot must be Shadow Power, Slot 2 must be Vault. (In case that logic isn't understood, Vault must be used to run from all locking skills, like Frozen, or used to run from mobs that use Vortex especially in combination with Molten/Plague)

Again, this would be so bad if the primary attack refilled the Discipline meter, but instead it only refills the damage (hatred) meter, which is far less useful. In order to get that, the DH has to sacrifice an all important passive slot. It also wouldn't be so bad if Blizzard would allow DH's to have better Discipline regeneration. But that was taken from Natalya's set, and even from the "Perfectionist" passive. Repeatedly, Blizzard has made it hard, if not impossible to make a DH that can properly stack this all important stat. A DH with no Disc is a dead DH. So then the only alternative is to buy really expensive gear... such as a Perfect Dead Man's with +10 Max Disc, or a Nat's Chest with another 10 Max Disc, or an SOJ with 10 Disc. If you choose to not run these, or can't afford them, then you're at a massive disadvantage compared to those who can, as it may be possible for them to not have to use the Night Stalker passive because the gear full-fills that problem. As a result of the need for Discipline, Slot 3 must be Preparation.

Additionally, DH has the problem that it's DPS is paper DPS, unlike other classes, that can deal far more DPS than their spec sheet would normally imply.

You mentioned this in your Monk example, and it is completely true. It's true of every class again, except for DH. So DH can get a puffed up DPS number, but still struggle at taking enemies as fast as other classes.

And in order to get that puffed up DPS number, DH's have to chase down multiple DPS buffs in the form of Passives. DH's have more Passive DPS boosters than any other class, and it's no wonder, as they are incapable of dealing any more damage than what is on their spec sheet.

In case you're wondering what they are, they are: Steady Aim, Cull the Weak, Archery, Sharpshooter, and Ballistics. Not all of them are good, or worth using, but it's worth noting as no other class is full of these buffs. Most people are running at least 1 of these buffs (Archery) but some like me are running 2 (Archery/Steady Aim). It's nuts, this damage should just be built in. Why make passives be about damage? That makes the class less interesting to play.

But anyway, that's a tangent in and-of-itself.

DH's also don't have any builds that create synergy. The best example's of synergistic builds is the CM Wizard, and the WW Barb. Every skill in both of those builds is used to fuel the build. This is only a side issue, as it's not a hard fast requirement that each class have synergy, but it does add to the fun.

==========================================

If you've made it this far here is a recap:
DH doesn't have any defensive skills mixed with offensive skills, as a result, none of DH's skills offer defense and DPS simultaneously (to clarify, none of the skills that do, I would consider viable. Yes there is a rune for Caltrops that does DPS, and yes there is Entangling shot as well as Rapid Fire with a slow rune... but these are all not useful options).

DH has to run these three skills: Shadow Power, Vault, and Preparation. This leaves a maximum of 3 skills open for DPS. If you want more control, than one of those slots will have to be Caltrops, unless you as a player decide to do significantly less DPS by choosing Entangling Shot. If you choose to use Caltrops, then the most likely two attack choices will be Hungering Arrow/Elemental Arrow. If you have a third, then it leaves a slot open for Spike Trap (or if you prefer, Companion/Bat). If you want the ability to keep up Shadow Power, then it's almost required to run Night Stalker. Archery is a given, and the third slot is sort of at the players discretion. I play with Steady Aim, as the bonus to damage is hard to pass up, but I often wish I could run Perfectionist or Tactical Advantage.

DH doesn't do any more DPS than what the spec sheet says, where other classes clearly do more DPS than DH.

To me, it feels like DH is the most locked down class. I've been experimenting with skills outside of this basic outline above, but it doesn't feel like anything is more viable. There will always be some big sacrifice to change any of the skills I've mentioned, usually in the form of DPS, which it feels like the DH can't really give up, as for the DH, that number really matters.

I think another problem is that the only weapon you want to use is a Manticore which is a very slow weapon compared to the one hand bows like Calamity. Because your shots have travel time with any weapon, this is compounded with the slowness of a Manticore to make the game even more stressful.

If the one hand variants could match the dps of the Manticore then the game would be much easier on DH's as you can probably get off 4 shots with a 1hnder compared to the Manticore. Since I'm stuck at 90k dps until Blizzard drops another legendary to sell, I bought a cheap 1200 dps Calamity for fun. My Manticore is only 1050 dps or so but with only cheap gems (2x60%) it's more paper dps than the Calamity. But while actually playing the game the Calamity is much much better to use in all situations because of the speed at which I can get out of situations.

I can use any shot with the Calamity as I can tag 4 or 5 mobs in the same amount of time that it takes to tag a mob with the Manticore. If I miss a shot because a mob used teleport it doesn't matter because here comes another salvo. I can keep lots of mobs CC'd at all times. But the Manticore does more damage even though it's at least 150 dps behind using crappy gems. When I eventually get a nicer Manticore with 1300 dps there's no way Calamity can match it. If I bought some nicer gems for the crappy one I have the Calamity would be dead in the water.

Blizzard really needs to speed up the shot speed of the 2hnders like Manticore or make the 1hnders closer to the dps of the 2hnders. With Calamity I can use any shot and be viable. With Manticore I'm stuck using only certain skills. Either compared to a Barb or Monk is a joke as their moves don't have travel time.

Well, once you get fully geared, then it's less of a problem, the problem of course is getting there. After getting all the Best in Slots, being over 2 attacks per second with a Manticore is easily possible, but once again, you have to get them all. Things like Witching Hour, Lacuni Prowlers, Mempo/Andariel's, Inna's Temperance, Dead Man's Legacy, Rare gloves w/ Attack Speed, Natalya's Reflection, Rare Amulet with Attack Speed, Hellfire Ring with Attack Speed.

The cure to all the problems with DH is equipment... which shouldn't be the case. DH (as far as I can tell) essentially got nerfed because of overgeared people with uber equipment abused some DH skills, and they essentially were effected the least, while ungeared players using the DH got hit the hardest.

I'm not saying that they should reverse the nerfs, but they should buff something that will help to balance things out. Make Discipline regen faster or give more base discipline or do something else to help the discipline problem (Preparation should not be in 100% of all top tier DH builds...), remove some DPS passives and up DH's damage multiplier to increase diversity in builds. Make Smoke Screen able to deal with Reflect Damage. Make DH the best at something, if that's running away and/or kiting, then DH's need a buff in that regard, since it's definitely not in their wheel house now. Something!!! These ideas are just things I'm spit balling.

Farming with a Barb doesn't work unless your a barb or a turbo monk.

The whole point of the WW barb is that he doesn't have to stop to kill white enemies he just runs past them and the tornado's finish the job......Though I don't see many people running MP3 and actually killing all the mobs with the tornado's.

Other classes have to stop to attack making them significantly slower and virtually impossible to keep up with a WW Barb.

I built my barb specifically so I can farm with other barbs.

I feel the DH problems. It was my main for the longest time. I switched to my barb cause after leveling him to 60 and putting some cheap gear on him, I was amazed at his survivability.

+1

It is hard to find DH gear that is affordable.

My main is also a DH and with the talk about how easy it is with barbs when it come to farming and doing ubers, I might have to try it. I have a level 44 barb and incidentally, I found yesterday a nice lvl60 2h axe (about 800 dps) with reduced level requirement of 16, making it equippable for a lvl44 barb. Maybe it's a sign I should try it. I stopped leveling the barb because it was too tedious leveling and i didn't really enjoy it.

Is there any good guide about the WW barb ? I don't care if it is a cookie-cutter, I'm a total noob when it come to anything other than DH.

I used this, and it's proving effective.

Over all, it does not matter how you allocate stats, just aim for these overall values in your details screen with Ruthless, Nerves of Steal and Weapons Master for passives, NO cooldowns popped! :

Str : 2000 (DPS and Armor for this, most important base stat!)
HP : 30K plus (40K ideal, but pricey!)
Armor : 5000
RA : 500
CrtChance : 35% (will buff higher when you pop your cooldowns - do not go lower!)
CrtDamage : 350% (this comes from your weaps - 50% on each with sockets n gems)
APS : 1.6 (fast offhand dagger is best, Swords second, MH is 1.3, rest is gear buffs for ASI)
LOH : 1200 if you can get it, a little less is OK
Life Steal : 2.8% minimum. (On belt. If you can get it on weap, easy to get boss belt!)
Movement Speed : +12% minimum

Thanks, I'll look into this and hope I have a few good items for the barb in the stash.

Anyone know when this game will be out of alpha stage and into atleast beta ? They have not even implemented the PVP system yet. Log on about once a week to see no changes being made... what a smuck I was to spend money for this game oh well I am the sucker... grats blizzard you got me on this purchase.

When the expansion is for sale, of course :D

Got a trifecta ring with Avg dmg, but no main stat. I'm hoping to make 15-25 mil on it. Other than that I've had a dry spell with drops worth anything. I guess its a good time to discourage me from playing since I have a lot of studying to do :p

Perplexed as to why people play this just for the PvE. Then again games like Farmville and Bejeweled are extremely popular. I put D3 in the same vein.

Great post noobie! Guess we'll put you in that same vein also since your contributions are so significant.
