Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

There is no "client", just the auto-updater and the D3 executable. You don't need to run anything in the background and the log in mechanism is baked into the game itself, like WoW.

Still waiting on the patch. It's hard to play when there's so much good stuff coming down the line.

Thanks for the reply. I assume all other Blizzard games are the same? And how is the client? Is it stable like Steam or are there still issues like when D3 launched?

Yeah I guess he might mean "hub" or something. There is a client for each game but its not in a centralized hub like Steam is. And yeah, all Blizzard games from WoW onward function similarly. Before it used to function like a torrent, where you download the game data and install it like a normal game. Lately though, their digital distribution has gotten fancier. It still has the p2p element to it, but now the game data can be "streamed" from the launcher, downloading the essential components first and more stuff later. This lets people get into the game without all the data downloaded first. Though it won't exactly be the best experience, the option is at least available.

You log in with your bnet account, so you can basically forget about your key at that point, just don't lose your login information.

Have they fixed the issue with the game being stuttery for the first dew minutes of gameplay? People came up with a workaround that involved uploading data filed to a 16 gb USB memory stick, but it would be nice if Blizzard just fixed this issue. Starting up a hardcore character can be a death wish with all the stuttering before it smooths out.

I noticed I had 'accidentally' installed D3 on my main drive (SSD) so I moved it to a regular HDD. Man was that a mistake, constant stuttering from loading the entire time. I'm amazed how much content streaming this game does. Needless to say, it went back on the SSD - still gets stutters but they're only 1/4th a second instead of 1-3 seconds.

I haven't noticed any performance issues since 1.0.4.

All my friends have SSD and 24% movement speed except one. Every map change he is like 3 seconds behind us and with 12% movement speed he pretty much never catches up. We belittle him and his pathetic PC to an inappropriate level....then take it one step farther than that. His tears please me.

1.05 can't come soon enough. After going on a nice streak last weekend where I was getting a legendary every 3-4 hours with 250+ MF, it's been over 30 hours since my last one. And during that time, I've boosted my MF to 335 with NV. I know, RNG is RNG, but jeeze, this is just frustrating.

I feel you. I had a bad streak of nothing for couple of weeks and last week.... it changed

Found : Nat's Boots, Blackthorne's Chest armor, Witching Hour, The Inquisitor, Wizard helm lvl 63, Andy's Visage, Sewer.... :D

Random is random..... :p

I've been dropping 3 legendaries per day for the last couple of days :)

For a while I was doing a legendary every 2 hours or so. I haven't seen one in what feels like forever now. I think since that day I got the 3 good items.

I just blew a bunch of gold on Radiant Star gems. Being able to buy them for 7-11m is kind of funny when they cost more then that to craft

Got a nice Stormshield this weekend and...they aren't worth much at all anymore. Doh. Meanwhile the level ~14 Leorics Ring is worth like 40mil now that 60s can use the xp bonus. Maybe I should farm normal mode ;)

Monk is my main, but for fun I geared out my witch doctor for sacrifice/summon zombie dogs. That is actually pretty fun to play. With the right gear you can get the dogs cooldown to zero and spam sacrifice. Lots of health, health globes and pickup radius too so hes survivable.

Really?!?

I was just looking at stormshields this weekend and good ones are still priced pretty decently. I think the bar for whats good and whats more or less common is constantly creeping upwards.

When I say "good" I mean like
at least 29% block chance this is minimum, in the 30s would obvioulsy be better and top tier
at least 180-190 str
75 AR
9% CHC
And the standard percent reductions to ranged, melee, elite properties.

I figured it was more because no one uses shields ever since inferno was made easier. From what I remember those shields and +block items used to go for a lot more.

Nobody has proven that loot is random in d3.

Sure attributes and their values are likely random. But nobody knows the back end of the loot system and how it works. They could be tying loot drops into the Auction house to drop high dollar items less. As far as I know nobody knows except blizzard.

So instead of saying Random is Random could we move on to something a bit more accurate like Blizzard gods are not in good charity today.

Keeping the math simple there are around 120 Legendary Items that can be drop in inferno act 3. The odds of getting 2 of the same items is something like.4 %. Sure sure its a bit more complex than that because of Items level but still the odds of continually getting the same items over and over again is extremely rare. I have gotten over 5 ivory towers out of somewhere around 50 legendary drops so around 10% of my legendary Items are Ivory Towers and Ivory towers are less than 1% of the possibilities.

It could be completely random....but based on my observation I doubt it.

So blizzard gods no more Ivory Towers please.

lol I've gotten two of those damn Ivory Towers. But plenty of other rares and sets too, and none of the rest were repeats so far.

Yeah I doubt it's completely random either. Like attributes, the good stuff is probably categorized in higher tiers (lower probability) of loot. There are fixed chances for loot too. A while back, they were adjusting the drop chances of ilvl 61-63 items, but the chance for them to be magic/rare/legendary are probably affected by another factor (which can be improved with MF since MF doesn't increase the chance for higher ilvl items to drop). There are probably a lot of hidden mechanics to make things turn out the way they do.

This very well could be the funniest full circle stories I have heard about in recent. So here you go.

I got an ivory tower to drop last week and then one again this weekend. So this is where the inspiration could've started I don't know.

Anyway, like a day later, one of the guys asks me that I've been farming with lately if I still have those ivory towers and that he is buying them unid'ed to troll a buddy of his. I told him sorry as I has previously turned those POSs into brims.

So I get on reddit this morning and I see this thread.

http://www.reddit.com/r/Diablo/comments/114ao4/need_help_trolling_my_friend_wtb_any_unid_ivory/

Well, now I get on here and see your post Stevedave. Are you the friend that is getting trolled? I would serioulsy hope that you would've picked up on it after say like the 2nd or 3rd one. I'm surprised that they would've left it go that far, and now this gives you a chance to return the favor somehow. If this isn't you then you seriously have the craziest ivory tower streak that I've ever heard of.

haha that would be hilarious, but its not me. I also throw down the ivory tower to troll the people I'm playing with. Always do it with siege breaker.

On the other hand, anecdotal evidence does not prove the opposite true. The sample size it too small to draw any conclusion.

If everyone had an even distribution of legendaries (as in never getting the same one until he or she got all of them), then it for sure would not be random. Some people get more, some people get less. Some get multiple of the same item back to back, that fits into the definition of random.

It is true that we don't know the exact algorithm to know how loot is distributed, but I believe random is a pretty large part of it, and there is no conspiracy theory of them tying the loot dynamically to the AH. The market moves too quickly for dynamically changing drop rates to be profitable, and there would need to be a lot of man hours determining if changing the drop rate is porofitable.

Say stormshield is the new pink and everyone wants it. If they lowered the drop rates, yes maybe they'd sell for more, but the transaction count would drop too, which could lower overall profits. By the time someone figured out what to do, laccuni bracers are the new pink. If they upped the drop rates more bracers would be exchanging, but they'd get less per transaction. It's the idea of supply and demand. And since they tweak drop rates instead of directly selling items, the lag of items hitting the AH would be really hard to maintain.

Also, in this conspiracy to tie drop rates to the AH, why would they double the drop rates of everything. Doubling the amount of everything doesn't seem like an AH profit driven decision. Getting more people to play and have fun seems like the best way to drive up revenue. The game wasn't and still isn't perfect, but I think the changes over the patches are steps in the right direction.

Personally I haven't played since I tried my char on ptr cause I'm just awaiting the next patch and I'm gonna get sucked in with xcom

Hah, my very first elite pack after logging into 1.04 dropped me an Ivory Tower. I was sporting next to zero MF at the time too. It was like the "Blizzard gods" were offering me some sort of vile carrot on a stick.

...And since they tweak drop rates instead of directly selling items...

Conspiracy Tuesday: You can't prove that they don't sell items on the RMAH. It is eminently possible for them to make "flavour of the week" Lacuni's 10 times as rare as ivory towers, then sell random-rolled lacunis for real money on the auction house. It is completely anonymous, no? And it shouldn't be that hard for them to determine reasonable market value for a subset of valuable legendaries.

Disclaimer: I don't believe that they do. At all. Just mentioning possibilities here ;)

As far as conspiracy theories, directly selling items seem like it'd be much easier to control the market than knob tweaking drop rates dynamically. :)

Pretty awful theory. You get more Ivory Towers because you get more 61 shields. It is rolling the ilvl item first, then the chance at legendary. The more uncommon the actual item type is to drop, the more uncommon the legendary/set is going to be.

So does this mean that once you can set monsterlevel = 1, there will be 0 chance of ivory towers?

On the other hand, anecdotal evidence does not prove the opposite true. The sample size it too small to draw any conclusion.

True I was just pointing out the .04% chance of getting the same rare twice and the extreme unlikelihood of me getting that many Ivory Towers in a fully random system.

If everyone had an even distribution of legendaries (as in never getting the same one until he or she got all of them), then it for sure would not be random. Some people get more, some people get less. Some get multiple of the same item back to back, that fits into the definition of random.

Again true but the odds of the same drop 2 times in a row based on 120 item drop size is .04% which is extremely rare....but possible.

It is true that we don't know the exact algorithm to know how loot is distributed, but I believe random is a pretty large part of it, and there is no conspiracy theory of them tying the loot dynamically to the AH. There is a "conspiracy" theory of them tying the loot to the AH....I just suggested it. Thought it wouldn't be a conspiracy theory because it wouldn't be a crime to do so.....Just a regular old theory. I doubt it would be dynamically set though. Probably a fixed number based off historical trending. They have all the data of who uses what and when. For instance they can pull data on the top 10% of DPS and see what gear they have then lower the drop rates for that gear to maintain rarity.

Probably still unlikely....but possible so until we know saying Random is random is not true.

Also, in this conspiracy to tie drop rates to the AH, why would they double the drop rates of everything. Doubling the amount of everything doesn't seem like an AH profit driven decision. Upping the drop rates keeps people engaged and playing while increasing the traffic in the auction house. Also keeping in line with the theory they could be upping the drop rates of only a select few items we'll call it the 90% but the top 10% remains the same or at least not as large of a drop increase......nobody would know.

Lets say the current level 63 legendary drop rate is .01 percent and there are 20 level 63 item to randomly select from each with a 5% chance of being selected.

They could up the drop rate to .05 but then change the individual drop rate of the items. Say the best 5 out of the 20 Items get a 2% drop rate while the bottom 15 get a 6% drop rate. So they will in fact increase the drop rate as a whole they are not flooding the market with the top ranked items.

again nobody know what the hell blizzard is doing.

But isn't this changing so that an item's level is matched to the level of the mob you kill?

I'll try to get the quotes, but the short answer is no. iLvl distribution will be exactly the same as act 3 now. However, the affixes will be based on the monster level.

As I understand this, this means that all rares are worth identifying again. At ml1 all monsters are 63, so even a 60 ring will roll affixes like its a 63 ring. Weapons and armor can still be good too. A 58 chest piece can roll as high stats as a 63, max sockets, max resist all, etc. the only difference will be the base armor, so that might not matter for some builds.

As far as legendaries are concerned, those non63s will still drop, and the fixed stats are unchanged, but the random properties can roll better than they used to at ml1 or higher.

What I haven't found out yet is is monster level affects the probability of higher tiers of affixes. For example, do you have a better chance of 80resist all gloves dropping at ML10 than ML1? I think it would make sense to because it gives mor incentive to move up in ML over a marginal exp/mf gain. As long as ml 1 starts around current stat tier distribution, I'd be fine with that.

^^ There are just too many crap affixes.

At least you got strength roll on that barbarian belt instead of intellect or some other non-applicable nonsense.

Why do single resist affixes have the same min/max that all resist does? Since it's just one, shouldn't they offer greater specific protection?
