Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

WEll after beating Diablo last night (on Normal) I'm not even sure I'll play it on nightmare/inferno.

Not only does it seem that the ENTIRE game was built on forcing players to use the AH, as I never once my entire playtime to lv 33 got a single set/legendary) which in D2 you would have gotten most likely. It makes no sense why they wouldn't have set pieces (for those lower lv's) be able to drop in normal, except if they want people to b eforced to go on the AH.

It seems the entire game was built to shift players from "finding" good loot to having only a few players actually find it while the majority of players (and the majority of diablo players will most likely play normal then be done with it) are forced to use the AH to get decent gear so they aren't underpowered.

I know going into the end of Act 3, it seemed that virtually EVERY yellow that I actually came across was for a lower lv of items. Where the White/blues that dropped were for my lv range usually, all the yellows that droped were for lower lv's. So I hopped onto the AH and bought some of my lv and it made a HUGE difference in both my dmg and survivability.

Also since I finished the game, I have to say Blizzard really fucked up classes. Taking out the ability to build your class and having it be streamlined with skills you can easily switch in/out an daugments, it gives 0 reason to try something new/roll a new character. That was the reason I stuck around in D2 for a year+ after it was out, trying one class build, then trying a different one, it was fun and provided new things.

Well that is your opinion, but honestly you are lvl 33. The game between Nightmare and inferno difficulties is dramatically different.

So you don't think Blizzard built the game and focused on forcing players to use the AH? Come on, you'd have to be blind not to see that.

With the RMAH (which Blizzard takes a cut) it's a huge thing for them, they have designed it so it pushes players to use it an dthus they have found a way to further get money from players.

As far as classes go, you honestly think having less choices is better? Not being able to have two barbarians that are built completely differently and both being viable seems bad to you? Sure you can have differences in the game but nothing drastic, and with the easily swappable abilities it makes choices less meaningful.

Anyways moving more on to the topic, I'm gonna try a bit of nightmare just to see how it is :p.

As far as builds go, I have read that for the Barbarian it's better on harder difficulties to go either with a Shield or Two hander. However my problem is that for my lv, on the AH, the two handers that I can find have LESS damage then one handers, that doesn't make sense does it? I thought the point was that two handers do more dmg while 1 handers are faster + you get the added benefits of being able to have + bonsuses on two weapons instead of one.

Forget it... he's a typical read things first without thinking for himself person.

There's no real way to reason with them now. They already have a preconception of the game because of what they were fed by others. Not getting a legendary in his normal play through reinforced all of the hate that's been floating around about the AH. Nevermind the fact that he's spent maybe 5 hours on the game. The game's clearly broken.

updated 1.0.3 and lost more than 5k damage and all my IAS items now have these tiny numbers like 6%. hitting in slow mo now.

edit: i imagine that Act 2 wall will still be in my way...

So I'm an idiot who can't "reason" with people because I stated that Blizzard shifted the focus of the game to making players use the AH? How am I "read things first" without thinking if I actually you know, PLAYED THE DAMNED GAME and finished it and then stated my opinion? No one "fed" me jack shit, it would take a FOOL and a blind man not to see that Blizzard shifted the item drops to be so rare/little as to force players to turn to the AH to make money.

I didn't say I hated the game, I just stated that comparing Diablo 2 for 3, the item drops are turned down SO low that for most "normal" players (IE the majority of people who bought the game, who will NOT finish the game on inferno) that they will never likely see a green or legendary item throughout their ENTIRE play through.

Explain to me how that's "good" and makes sense? It's good in the sense that it forces players to use the AH and some to use the RMAH, which Blizzard gets a cut from. You find it exciting that instead of having us "lowly" players don't get a set item/legendary and instead have to buy it from the AH instead because players like you grind for it?

In diablo 2 you could find such drops by playing normally, you didn't have to go through the hardest difficulty to come across set pieces or anything. By the time you finished d2 on normal you'd have some drops.

I fail to see why you bash me because I'm stating my opinion that the drop rate sin D3 are vastly lower for items compared to d2, and it forces us normal players (who are beneath you it seems) to use the AH instead of having th excitement of actually you know, finding one in a playthrough.

Also 5 hours? Did you fly through the game to get to inferno? Because I am lv 33 and have almost 30 hours put into the game. Because like most players I don't "rush through" a game.

So that's 30 hours almost of playing, which for many normal players is fairly a good length, maybe mor ethen most as I always explored all the maps an dnevr left anything unturned.

I guess 30 hours of time is too much to expect to have decent items drop and just a couple special set pieces or a legendary?

Calm down. I don't know how it took you 30 hours to get to level 33, but I'm starting to suspect you're trolling now.

I don't care how slow you are at gaming... it does not take 30 hours to get to level 33 through normal. My DH took about 24 hours to get through Hell and my two alts took 15-20 hours each to get through Hell. No power leveling, did every quest.

People focusing way too much on stuff that doesn't matter. Just because drops aren't colored green or gold doesn't mean they're terrible and you aren't getting drops.

Serious trolling going on here.

I don't get why this one stinkin point always gets trivialized. I have to agree with the previous poster, even though you guys are baggin on him for only leveling to 33. I have a monk and wiz at lvl 60. I have a DH I believe right at or just under 30 (can't remember off hand). And I have a HC Barb at like 28. NOT ONE LEGENDARY or SET ITEM!!!!!! I think I've gotten a handful of rares that were actually at my same lvl, and just yesterday my eyes almost exploded because I had gotten a rare and it was locked. It was actually for a lvl higher. Thats one or two nice rares that I considered long term items in probably over 100 hours. How is that now broken? Do you want to know how many times I've played auction house manager?

Don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying the game, obviously to put that kind of time in. But at some point it's going to be gg not because I put the game down with satisfaction but simply because my patience is wearing out.

Lol, so you post an inflammatory response directed at him, he replies with a pretty well thought-out rebuttal, and what you have to say is "Calm down" and "serious trolling going on here"?

The only one trolling here is you.

Refer to my previous post: Color of an item does not determine whether or not you're "getting drops".

At this point it's psychological now. If we recolored all items to be white but kept their stats, people would be shitting a storm about garbage loot yet no stats were changed.

Also, I've stopped playing too; although for other reasons. And I don't make illogical incoherent nonsensical conclusions based on the coloring of the words on an item. Also, it's such an obvious regurgitation of everyone's belly aching combined with the 30 hours to level 33... way too much trolling going on now.

It's not the color of the item, it's how interesting or useful the item is. Set items are usually interesting, uniques were interesting when they had specialty stats, like in D2. People aren't getting these items because the drop rate is much lower, therefore loot in this loot grind game is less interesting.

It's really simple.

I'm the one trolling because I stated my opinion that drops were too low for NORMAL players who don't rush through a game?

Many people that play the game like to explore every inch of the maps and not leave any stone unturned, they don't just rush through the storyline and do boss runs for gear or whatever. We actually listen to dialogue and watch the cutscenes because that's why we play games, to be entertained, not to rush to the end.

I play games for fun, not work and grinding. If you can't play a game normally and see a touch of everything (IE set/legendary drops) which you almost ALWAYS did in diablo 2, then it's obvious something is too low.

A quick google search of "Diablo 3 drops too low" will return many many other people complaining about this as well.

Having it be so rare and reserving them for inferno grinders is good for those peopole and blizzard, but not fun for us normal players who most likely won't set foot in inferno or don't want to pay real usd for virtual items.

I'm just going to suspect that you may be one of those people who are looking at the RMAH to make money from and therefore like the fact that such items are rare or drop only decently at much higher lv's for people that get there.

That's me in a nutshell as well...playing on normal level checking every nook and cranny. To me its funner that way. After that the more difficult levels. :)

I agree with you, but to add to this, Blizzard said from the start that if you only play Normal and Nightmare you only see like, 10% of the loot. Which is pretty shitty, IMO. Basically you are forced to play the highest difficulty levels in order to get the best loot (which, by current drop tables, you have ZERO chance of finding at lower levels regardless of rarity), which often requires you to buy from the AH or grind for hours upon hours in hopes of maybe finding a halfway decent item and struggling through Hell/Inferno.

It's just poor game design, IMO, and I don't know why they changed it from D2 LOD when everyone liked that game so much (minus the dupers and whatnot, which is a totally separate issue).

Precisely, it does not take long to realize you regurgitate words from what you've read online.

Drop rate honestly never occurred to me to be an issue. The AH was a god send to me and all of the people I knew in game. It wasn't until I came to Diablo 3 W[H]inefest that the idea that people actually wanted to spam trade chat and wanted to run mephisto thousands of times for a piece of loot came up. D2 might have had colorful item text, but the vast majority of them were meaningless / garbage.

I could make hundreds of dollars right now from the RMAH. Some of my friends did and walked away with $500+ from the game. I also stopped playing right around the time RMAH came out (was on a trip, nothing personal about the game really - real life got in the way). And to that end - I have not made a cent from the RMAH.

Seems Blizzard could appease everyone by recoloring the balanced great sword with gold letters. Go figure.

That's an entirely separate issue. Item design vs. drop rate is not the same issue that's been brought up.

Wow, some of these changes made are mindblowing, and I stopped playing a couple weeks ago.

You're not the only one who took awhile to level the first time through, and that's fine. Don't listen to that guy, he hardly ever agrees with anyone. My WD took about 35 hours to reach level 40. My Monk took about 12 hours to get to Inferno, and my DH took around 10.

Not sure if you saw the survey that was taken a few days ago, but the majority of the users polled chose "Item drops felt worthless". Anyone who thinks the item drops are fine are in the minority.

It isn't about the item color, you're being intentionally obtuse.

If you explored everything there is to do in Normal and colored item drop rate is your issue, then don't bother with nightmare, hell, or inferno since it won't change anything. Despite what you may think, inferno players aren't taking advantage of level 30's with the RMAH.

Unless there was something magical about D2's farming methods that is somehow drastically different than D3 (dupes and pindlebots?), then you wont' like it at 60.

It isn't about the item color, you're being intentionally obtuse.

You're intentionally trying to quote me while bringing something else up. I was not aware of anything that Stiler has said concerning the item design issue.

But if you really want to discuss; then my stance is that I'm neutral about item design. While there's nothing out of this world like enigma, there are legendaries that provide unique bonuses for their slot. While it's not flashy or "interesting", they have their merits in terms of unique stats. There's a fine line between interesting stuff and breaking the game like enigma did.

It seems they tweaked the drops with level 60 in mind. I found one legendary before hitting 60. After hitting 60 and getting 150% worth of MF gear plus whatever the Valor buff provides I'm averaging one set/legendary item a night.

I do miss finding low level set/legendary items. I remember in D2 finding at least one set item an act and maybe the odd unique item.

I've never heard anyone state that the AH was a god send. That is priceless! :D

Compared to spamming trade chat? Of course. I never liked sifting through that or forums then creating a game to get the trade going etc. etc.

The concept of a AH is certainly a good thing.

I finished regular and defeated Diablo with my DH lvl 33 and not a single legendary drop, now in Act 2 with my Barbarian lvl 25 and just got my 1st legendary, a pair of shitty MF 40 armor boots. Drops are baaaad.

This is a good point. NV wasn't in D2.

Hardforum only survey? Hardly seems like a good sample group.

I, too, would like to see the sort of people playing this game. I'll bet Hardcore D2 players are a vast minority compared to casual facebook/cod gamers.

It could have been.

If their implementation wasn't so god fucking awful. Someone previously said it right--markets should have been split up WAAY more.

Hardforum only survey? Hardly seems like a good sample group.

Where would you suggest the survey should be posted? A general PC gaming area of the forum seemed like the perfect place to get the most unbias representation of what the Diablo 3 community thinks. Clearly I couldn't have posted it in the battle.net forums or the Diablo subreddit as anyone who would have stopped playing would probably have stopped visiting the aforementioned places.

It was a sample size of 191 in a general gaming forum. Sitting here, I honestly cannot think of a better place to post it.

That's the thing, they "felt" worthless when in fact they could have been perfectly fine. A lot of these opinions are driven by feelings and I don't blame anyone really. I too like the feeling when an uncommon color drops on the ground regardless of the actual usefulness of the item. Good stats should objectively be the most valuable thing on an item, but because they can be buried in the countless sea of rares, the feeling of excitement is diminished. And as mentioned, with the AH displaying all the shiny gear that will always be better than what you can find, that excitement diminishes further.

Compound that with the inherent difficulty of Inferno. In D2, you could get through Hell with pretty shitty gear and faceroll it with good gear. In D3, the constant feeling that each upgrade just helps you survive a little bit better demotivates people.

People probably don't like the concept of gear-based progression for increased difficulty. They want to feel awesome for beating the game's hardest content and get more gear to feel more awesome.

No, the point was that item design, or lack thereof, compounds the issue of a lessor drop rate for all types of usable items. The game feels quite empty, gear wise, without regular AH use. Since they basically divorced the role playing aspect from the game, your build relies solely on your gear. If the gear is more sparse and less interesting, the core mechanic of the game is flawed.

Until you get to 60 and can 5 stack NV, there just isn't much to be said about the loot grind in the game. IMO, with no PVP and no ladders, there is no point in getting "ubered" after having all of Inferno on farm unless you want to sell on AH/RMAH or twink your alts.

Could an expansion like LoD fix many of these issues? As long as they stop doing retarded things with the patches to punish botters and regular players alike, yes. They need to stop with the increase of repair costs as well. Just reintroduce corpse runs, at least on Inferno.

I've found two legendaries so far. Both are rando 300-500dmg 1h swords. Seriously no use except looking pretty in my stash.

It seems this thread consists mostly of players who've already quit the game debating/arguing with others who've already quit the game as well. :D

Could've just posted it on r/gaming. And if it became more recognized it would hit the front page (or maybe close) of "new" or whatever they use.

I'm sure plenty of people in r/gaming would look at it even if they don't still play.

You're not only limiting this survey by keeping it here, but you're also a pretty specific mindset imo.

I'm still playing, despite my discontent. It helps to have RL friends who are also equally as skilled.

Ha ha I agree with you 100%.

On a nicer note every elite mob that I have run into after stacking NP to 5 has dropped 2 rares for me in Hell whereas they dropped jack before. I have nearly a bag of rares in about an hour of farming with 3/4 of them for my DH. And they are level 55 - 61 to boot whereas before my highest DH drop was level 51 in 140 hours of game play. Pretty cool!

Now to convince my nephew to reinstall the game. I never bitched about the drop rate while we played together as all my alts have BiS rares or close to it in every slot to 55 or so from all the trash that dropped while playing my DH. I wanted him to get a feel for what he purchased and make his own opinion of it. He got mad and uninstalled it 3 days ago as his Wizard was stuck wearing level 8 blues from Act I and we were almost through Act II normal. He couldn't stand looking at all my alts looking uber and me 2 hitting rare elites and him having to kite them around . I guess I'll tell him it's safe to play again. :)

Dissecting all the whining and complaints, these are the two main issues:

1. Giving people the impression that Inferno was supposed to be progressed through like the previous acts. This was not their intention, but their terrible design of inferno compounded their mistake. They're trying to patch things up with the nerfing of monsters, NV redesign with respect to elites, and redesigned loot tables. But there was a ton of oversight with exploitable build combinations, exploitable bosses, exploitable mechanics (level hopping etc.), and overall poor game design. "Progression" in inferno was trivialized immensely within a week of the game's launch. Their WOW oriented game designers wanted inferno to be a sort of tiered system similar to WOW's raids, but this failed miserably. People simply were not content with the idea of farming Act 1 and getting half way gear when the ilvl 63's were already out there to obtain. This is fundamentally different than WOW where you couldn't just say "I don't want to run this raid because there's a harder one out there with better loot so let me take my new level capped character into that raid and give it a go".

2. This isn't so much a mistake on Blizzard's part, but the psychological effect that the AH has on the players. I said it in a different post in another thread, but people see the AH and see what items are out there and immediately make the correlation that they NEED these things to progress and that because these items are better and available in the AH, that they must have them while progressing without the AH is 'impossible' (the AH is forced is a common phrase thrown around).

This statement is largely true in inferno. Which isn't a bad thing I feel (Who thinks self farming gear to beat inferno in 50 hours was the goal of inferno?). The problem is that EVERYONE is now adopting this stance. We've even got this level 33 guy saying that the AH is absolutely necessary if you don't want to be underpowered. Are you kidding me? The AH is absolutely not necessary to get you through Hell. All of the launch early birds did it. The AH will likely make you super powerful for where you are while leveling... but it's certainly not necessary nor are you forced to use it to get through Hell.

People want the best stuff and they want it now. The AH makes "what's available out there" very transparent. If you don't get the same stuff yourself, then you will rant about it.

There would be a LOT LESS complaints if this is what Blizzard did:
- Never released Inferno. This would effectively make D3 = D2 in terms of content.
- Recolored some throwaway gear so people got rainbow loots (regardless of if they're useful or not).

And people who claim that Inferno is what drives RMAH do not understand the money that exchanged hands in D2 when there was no inferno mode. Also, Inferno is very clearable (pre-patch) without RMAH so that's clearly not the issue either.

Got hit with a nerfbat today and saw my wizard's attack speed go from 60% to 28% and my DPS fall by 15K in one shot. With all the other changes (boss tweaks, repair costs going up 300%+) I'm glad that I managed to finish Inferno.

But I did run through Act I Inferno on the nerfed wizard today at 27K damage and 300 resist and did pretty well, stacking up 5 before Butcher. Yellows got more frequent once I hit 4 and happened once every elite group while I had 5, though none of them were of AH quality---a couple i63s with shit stats, a few i61's, mostly i60's and the rest crap. Highest weapon I got was a 700 dps 1H. But it was a bit more exciting checking the drops, that ilevel stuff helps a ton sorting the wheat from the chaff.

I'm not saying it wasn't possible, as I got quite far without the AH, but inferno was just not fun. It was just a lot of exploiting flaws in the system to beat the game that Blizzard has been patching. Sure, there are going to be new flaws which will get people further along, but they'll always be just a tad more irritating.

And quite honestly, I don't mind if a game is hard, provided skill can get you through, but a lot of inferno just isn't skill.

Yes inferno was poorly designed... wrote a big ol post way back about it, right before they announced the changes to inferno to fix issues that were highlighted in said post.

It's unfortunate that they decided to combine the inferno changes with a big 'ol nerf. They've constantly been nerfing things rather than buffing things that are too weak (typical Blizzard - shouldn't expect any less). I was excited by the 1.03 changes, now generally depressed by the IAS nerf since it wrecks the itemization I invested so heavily in. I sort of feel like a fool for not jumping on the RMAH train and selling all my gear pre-nerf. I had faith that Blizzard wouldn't wreck weapon itemization balance, but they did... they went there.

Still waiting for a ton of skills to be useful. Every class has them. Where's the build diversity...
