Diablo 3 Beta

Yer this game sounds horrid, a console port of diablo where everything is on rails

Enjoy!

How is this game any more on rails than previous Diablo games? You have no reasoning, give us premises before your conclusion. There seems to already be far more dungeon randomization than diablo 2, so I'm not following you at all.

The fact that now I can no longer use a melee weapon on my Demon Hunter or Wizard.

You can use melee weapons on both characters, they would just suck with them. Actually I take that back, wizard has a spell that is specifically made for high damage weapons. Class specific weapons are nothing new though.

As the guy above said, you can use any non class locked item with any class. All abilities are based on your weapon's damage. If you are a wizard and find a 1h sword that does more dps than your wand, you can use that sword and your abilities will do more damage. Though there are restrictions where it makes sense. You cant do ranged arrow abilities without a bow, for example.

...... really?

Well then that settles it. I wont be buying this game now.

Eh? It's beta, stuff can get overlooked especially with overhauls like this. Keep in mind that there *is* a "basic attack" skill when you start a new charcter, it just gets overwritten within the first few minutes of the game when you level up and pick a skill. I don't think that's the extent of the skill's existence and it will probably be put in with the rest of the skill tree if it gets fixed.

Until they make a statement about changing their design goal, I'll still hold them to their intent to allow viable unorthodox builds. They made it *very* clear that building a character is a way to express yourself etc. etc. I'd actually be pretty surprised if they back out on that now.

Their main goal is to make sure that people can't make BAD builds, not an effort to allow for high levels of character customization.

I'm not sure where the line between "bad" and "unique" is drawn though. At Blizzcon, they demonstrated a viable melee Wizard and a petless Witch Doctor; are those bad builds or a unique-but-suboptimal builds? To be honest, I don't think the melee Wizard actually used his melee weapon (a 2H axe) for normal attacks, but rather Spectral Blade and AoE/defensive abilities were used.

I'm not sure where the line between "bad" and "unique" is drawn though.

There shouldn't be any. Everyone should be entitled to play the game how they want to play it.

I know what it is though. Blizzard is afraid that some kid will make a "bad" choice and won't be able to play the game because of there decision. There afraid when this happends the person will slander there name because Blizzard let them make the decision. They somehow must see these "bad" builds as failures.

I say tough cookies. Nothing ventured , nothing gained.

The thing about "bad builds" to me is, in Diablo 2 I never looked online for "optimal" builds. I just stuck skill points into whatever I wanted (even Vitality or whatever one people say never to use) and my build was perfectly viable. Beat the game and expansion and killed the bosses several times over.

Unless you are a complete moron and put skill points into stuff you never use I don't see how builds would not be viable in Diablo 2. And if you are a moron, tough shit, start a new character.

Haha, the last thing they are "afraid" of is being slandered. They are a business, what they are afraid of is not selling enough copies. Now as for the game developers. As already stated, their goal is that ANY build CAN work. Which I have no doubt they will succeed in.

It's not about making the game "easy mode". Its about complete and thorough BALANCE.

I commend them for thier tough decisions on the game system they are making, and not bending to the will of all the people complaining about how thier vision for the game doesn't fit the individual.

That doesn't make much sense, how's that different from an adult slandering them for not giving them enough choice? :D

^ Truth!

As it stands. I will not be buying this game. It just feels like a console port.

So basically its a game that uses the "Diablo" title and a few sprinkles of old characters to legitimize itself just to appease the old players.

Fuck this patch right in its patch-hole.

I have defended a lot of the changes from D2 to D3, but this agression shall not stand, man. I was fine with no skill points, and I was fine with the limited number of skills / rune modification. Now, they want to say those skills are even more limited to a certain unmovable button press, selected from a small list of 6 skill groupings? And the runes are just unlocked at set intervals as you go along, but tied to a specific skill? GTFO. This has regressed the gameplay from the prior beta versions, as far as I am concerned.

I cannot possibly see how this will make less cookie cutter builds, which was supposedly the goal. If that is the goal, why can't I pick which skill attaches to my first rune, and which rune ability it gets? If the answer is "some of them are too powerful" then fix them, because all you did was make a new skill at that point.

The interface continues to scream of consolized bullshit.

From the change blog:
Elective Mode: For players who wish to explore character builds which cannot be accomplished with the provided categories, an “Elective Mode” has been provided. When activated, Elective Mode will allow you to place any skill in any skill category slot, as freely as you could before.

as for the rune changes, i'm already anxious about being able to get the high level gear i know i'll want for my character, much less finding all the different runes of varying quality. i may not be the hardcore grinder you are, but for me, i'm fine with the rune system.

as for simplifying the game, when i would join pub games in d2 to grind to level 18 i ran into so many people who were playing the game casually who had a few points in every skill, wanted to try stuff out, and then were awful past act 1. when the game added synergies it only got worse.

Does not work

No dude you don't understand I have to overreact about every change or else people will think I'm some sort of pussy console gamer and FUCK consoles mirite???

btw Diablo 1 on PS1 was an actual thing and was perfectly playable with no changes from the PC version and there have been a bunch of Diablo clones on the consoles, so I dunno what that screenshot with the PS3 controller is supposed to prove.

HAHAHA that is this shittiest troll graph I've ever seen, atleast make the fucking lines decent. X for two attacks, hahaha!!!

The game isn't a console port, it's a PC first title, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see the console version for at least a year after the PC release.

IF they port it to consoles it will be successful. The game is 2d beat em up converted to 3d so of course it would be a viable console dungeon crawler. I do hope that there are challenges later in the game as I find the beta to be ridiculously easy. I can sleep, play, and win all at the same time it feels. Overall I still enjoy it, even if it feels like a dumbed down Diablo 2, because I am a loot whore.

Yeah the beta is very easy, but keep in mind, they're considering this portion of the game to be equal to basically finishing the cold plains in D2. Wasn't really much a challenge there either.

So I just logged onto the D3 beta for the first time since October or whenever they first started giving keys out...only to find out that my first character had been deleted.

O well.

Does anyone know if character models will be customizable? I couldn't find an option for it anywhere and I rather dislike how some of them look.

Your characters get deleted just about every beta patch. Only way to customize look is via gear.

"Omg, they are making the game fun without having to do 3-4 hours of character make up and skill choosing. THIS MUST BE STOPPED!!"

Geez, just because the game doesn't follow some cookie cutter description you choose, doesn't mean it is not a good game. Try to just play the game first before taking a few first impressions and throwing it out the window.

Unless i get in the beta i'll have to give them money to do this. Personally, i like it when devs innovate and create new ideas, i really don't like the approach they're taking with D3. Of course, i haven't played it.

I have been in it since October, and I bet if you go back and read this thread you will find me defending a lot of the changes. I was fine with the idea that your skills unlocked at certain intervals, and then you found various runes and attached them to skills to changed them up. I was fine with nuking skill points as well. I was fine with the RMAH, too.

Then they broke the stats down. Then they made runes unlock on certain levels, tied to certain skills. Then they tied every skill to simple DPS of the weapon you are holding (most powerful Wizard weapon in the beta? Crafted 2-handed axe. No joke). Then they made you pick one out of skill set 1, one out of skill set 2, etc. Then they forced them to go on certain buttons.

There is a fine line between "streamlining" and "dumbing down." I thought the immediate changes were the former, but now the changes since October appear to be the latter. The game is still fun, and the small slice of the game I am seeing might not give a good impression, but it's not the awesomesauce I expected. They should have just tweaked D2 like they did moving from SC to SC2, but this is a wholesale rewrite now. If you have been in the beta as long as I have, you can see the devolution of the interface to where that troll PS3 graph sure makes a lot of sense.

Isn"t it obvious? they're changing the game to suit consoles. It's cheaper to develop one game than two. There's no other reason for dumbing shit down as they are.

This is simply the perfect example of a development team making decisions with consoles in mind for their "pc lead platform developed" game.

Its not just for consoles, people need to stop using that as an excuse for everything. Look what Blizzard did to WoW, the same design process is carrying over to Diablo 3. Its for CASUALS, not for consoles.

There are plenty of complex games on consoles, its not a bunch of shit designed for drooling retards.

^^ Okay, yes. Their "streamlining" shit is in the name of casualization.

However, all UI changes can't fall under that category. It's simply cheaper to develop one UI that works on everything instead of one for PC and one for consoles.

^^ The work of a UI team obviously charged with the task of making the interface work for consoles. I'm actually surprised they still have the grid inventory and the paper doll for gear equipment.

How can I get an invitation? I would love to check it out....

Or they just made the new skill UI easier to understand and use, and the character info pane display the same information while using up less space (this is a good thing, wasted space is always bad, look at Skyrim's awful UI).

They have a completely separate team for the console version of D3, why would they incorporate console UI changes in the PC branch? Blizzard isn't a company known for half-assing their products, and they've always been interested in consoles: http://www.gamespot.com/news/could-diablo-ii-go-console-2605156. Pretty sure if the previous gen of consoles had a better online infrastructure we'd have seen D2 on the PS2/Xbox/GC as well.

You guys are getting pretty ridiculous.

The new skill UI is the opposite of easier to understand and use. It sucks, period.

Played about an hour on the new patch. So far the changes are pretty decent. Not having the option to change the mouse click buttons to the regular attack make me feel a little a little restricted in terms of what Blizzard can/cannot let me do. The auction house seems pretty cool instead of sitting in trade games/channel spamming "Looking for SOJ!" lol.

I'm really looking forward to the release of this game. For me, I'm not a teenager any longer and cannot devote hours to finding that single drop or building that perfect character. Getting rid of the stat points does make me miss my youth, but at the same time, now makes certain aspects of the game more enjoyable for the average gamer. I don't believe this game will appeal to the hardcore d2 player (that I once was), but rather to a casual gamer (that I am now).

Whoa, I actually like these changes a lot. Especially the Skill UI. I completely disagree on the whole "ZOMG theyre making this 4 consoles!!!1!1" thing. This is just better button management. The old Skill UI was kind of clusterfuck.
