Destiny - Discussion Thread

am I the only one not surprised by the loot payout? seriously? this is Bungie, they have never given loot out easily and always only provided just enough ammo. there really isn't that big a departure of from their Halo roots here.

edit: I have not noticed any stuttering or staggering on my X1

I'm now at level 10 and have completed all of the Earth and Moon missions.
It's mindless and reminds me a lot of the first Halo. Killing hordes of the same enemies over and over. The graphics are nice and it's not a bad game, but the idea of this game being played for years seems almost insane to me now. After talking with a few friends I don't think any of us love or hated it and I don't know if any us us will be playing it a few months from now.
It isn't the "meh" experience I got from Titanfall, but after all that hype it's incredibly average.

spot on in my book. not great, not horrible. just a halo offshoot that was hyped beyond any and all recognition.

Just wondering, does this game lag/stutter sometimes? I was watching a stream and it looked like it was dropping frames constantly. Not sure if that was just the stream or if the game is actually suffering pretty bad FPS drops.

I am genuinely curious here, not trying to troll. Just had to make sure that was clear.

None that I've noticed. It plays extremely smooth imo.

No performance issues for me. In fact, I'm honestly impressed with how well the game runs and how it looks. Graphics are the game's biggest highlight.
I played a raid mission with some friends last night and found it to be kind of fun. Those are more of the "MMO" vibe I guess. Those bosses are annoying as hell, though. They aren't hard so much as they're just a pain in the ass for taking so much damage.

The strike missions with friends are a lot of fun, especially the ones that have a few mini bosses all at once. Makes it for a pretty tough fight. Sure I beat the story already but I have already got my money's worth from this game and its just starting for me.

I think for a lot of people it takes some time before the realization sets in that it's not going to get any better. I imagine a lot of people struggle to accept that something from a studio as trusted as Bungie could come out this undercooked.

Honestly if this game came from some new studio somewhere, people would see it more as a promising start. Instead it comes from a massive studio with a massive budget, and people are left scratching their heads. It's maybe the oddest AAA release I've ever seen, and you're seeing that fact play out in the mixed reactions and reviews

It's not that the game is irredeemable. Even people that don't like it have admitted they nailed the shooting and the graphics. Everything else though..to get a game this middling when you were expecting greatness is shocking.

I don't even mean from a genre perspective. Everyone who claims that people bought into the hype and were expecting the wrong game, they seem to misunderstand that it's not the genre people were hyped over. It was a game from Bungie. It had a pedigree to live up to, even before the marketing machine began to turn. Instead we got a game with good shooting and nice graphics and very little else.

A game that is decidedly less than its parts.

...Instead we got a game with good shooting and nice graphics and very little else.

So besides missing a ring-world, a Master Chief and sexy AI companion it's exactly what everyone should have expected. ;)

load of stuff I've gleamed from reddit, metacritic, and others on the hard forums...

Your insight to games you've never played is amazing. Do you happen to work for kotaku? Your plagerism of others and rehash of reddit is refreshing and new.

One thing that I'm hoping they introduce later on are different voices for your Ghost. No offense to Dinklage (I actually don't mind his robo-voice), but I'd much rather hear a sultry Cortana-like voice talking to me.

It seems the more hyped a game is the cooler it is to hate on it. So with a release like Destiny the whole internet becomes one big echo chamber. By all accounts Activision shot itself in the foot and Bungie in the face with its bloated marketing budget.

I don't understand what people were expecting, but this game has been a tremendous amount of fun for me so far.

ummm maybe we were expecting the game they said it would be?

How can a game be social and team based with 0 chat? I mean come on, this is just a stupid fundamental boneheaded omissions along the same lines of no matchmaking for heroics or raids

There are certainly valid criticisms of the game such as this, but everyone keeps saying "MMO," "Borderlands," "Mass Effect," and the like. The game is nothing like either of these games. And this is Bungie, for crying out loud. They were Microsoft's bitch making Halo games for 8 years (2000 - 2007) under their ownership and made two more after going independent for the next 4 years (2007 - 2010). I would have been really surprised if they diverted from the Halo formula in any significant way with this release.

But thats just the thing, it seems like they reused not only concepts but perhaps even some assets, and the development time line and budget just doesn't add up to that. Ghost? hello Cortana. Sparrow? IDK drives like a Ghost from Halo to me...not very original in their names are they :p

While it should be expected, some of the similarities to Halo are a bit much. I bet they started making a more social Halo and had to tweak some of the assets after the fact.

But he's pretty much right about everything he said, why the need to shit on him?

Yar, I was a bit surprised by the similarities with Halo. I thought one of the reasons for Bungie to separate itself from Microsoft was because they were pretty much forced to continue the Halo brand and not release new IPs. So, what do they do after they receive their independence? Make a game that's incredibly similar to Halo.

Because it's fun? Because he does it with every single major release? Because plagiarism and theft of ideas is wrong? Because it sets up the opinion that he has no opinion that is his own?

Pick any number of reasons but the game isn't as near as bad as many of you are making it out to be. Never played on Xbox or Ps without using our own voice coms so while yes, a valid point I'm immune to it in destiny. Story line? Weak but doesn't limit the fun factor. Difficult bosses meh still haven't come across any 45 minute long fights. PvP is a blast and a riot with a team on voice coms. Yes it is unfair but there is a lot of potential there. Strikes are getting tedious so wish there was more content and I'm hating the fact that dlc is already in the works and "required" to address certain shortcomings and the lack of drops and wish there was more variety but none of those things are game breaking and easily fixed.

Now whether or not bungee fixes this stuff remains to be seen and will determine the longevity of the game at least for me.

Your completely missing the point. This is not the game that Bungie advertised and/or promised. The point is that everything Bungie TRIED to do with Destiny other games do better. The loot system is terrible, the Grind is annoying, the bosses are disgustingly boring, the level design is bland and lazy, the mission design is seemingly based off a template saying "Every mission must have the following"

This does not play like a 1/2 billion dollar budgeted triple A title from an extremely successful dev. It plays like a first venture into the market trying to compete with what other games did successfully but not pulling it off first timer.

Everything about the game was executed poorly, the Boss fights are simplistic designs of bullet sponge big ass gun with slow ass moving projectiles that you can dodge monstrosities . The party features are half assed at best, the social features are half assed and poorly thought through at best, Destiny did not accomplish anything aside from being a decently fun mindless shooter and that was NOT THEIR GOAL, which means its a design/implementation failure on their parts, SEVERELY so which severely damages the reputation they gained with halo.

I do have to admit the mission structure is just so repetitive.

Litreally I'd say the game is about 80% just "Go up to computer, Ghost "scans/unlocks it" while you fight off waves of enemies.

IT does this to the point you roll your eyes, it's like they couldn't think of any other missions or designs.

I think they dropped the ball in terms of story/interaction, the game had the potential to be something more. Imagine if the rpg side was as well done as Mass Effect? letting you actually talk to npc's, make choices, have you know "rpg" elements, then imagine if the worlds were actually open and free to explore, a la The Elder Scrolls games and there were side-quest/missions to find and other staples of rpg games.

The core gameplay is fun, and I am enjoying the strikes and mp, but it's not hard to see just how much better the overall game as a whole could have been. They just tried to play it "safe" and didn't seem to want to go to o11 for the game and crank it al the way up,

Also it just doesn't feel like a finished/full game, I mean the game supposedly cost 100+ million to make, that's more then Mass Effect,a nd yet it doesn't feel as full featured as that game really.

I did the moon strike my god is that a pain =) If you stay in the starting room you die well you just die all over the place. Finally got to Venus at level 13 I like the setting but it's more of the same it seems in the strike mission for the moon I was teamed up with a level 19 and two 11s and it was hard as hell we ran out of time and the mission was reset. Not sure if the level 19 in the group made everything scale super hard or what....I left after the 3 or 4 wipes and went back after I got to level 12.

Still can't believe they spent 500 million on this game I mean look at at the Kickstarter games done for 3-4 million and you get super quality in the game while Destiny is just icing on a cake.

I watched some of the teams on twitch. One played 12h and got to the second boss (which looks suspiciously like the fourth boss -- if people have their numbering correct). They're offline now. I think they gave up.

Well, I guess the game is redeemed then, now that the 1% have their end-game content to enjoy?

The first raid has been cleared now, here are some stats on it:

http://www.destinydb.com/news/posts/15-primeguard-clears-the-vault-of-glass-raid

took them a little over 10 and a half hours...and they died a combined total of 1,606 times...

"Their average lifespan was 2 minutes and 22 seconds"

Sounds pretty rough and frustrating. The bar might be a high enough that people simply don't care to try, I think they missed the boat by not including EZ mode raid content people can use to bridge between normal play and hardcore 10 hour raids where you are lucky to survive through a commercial break.

I don't really know much about the raid structure here, but it sounds like they just made the enemies have a ton of HP and do a shit ton of damage, resulting in dying over and over and taking 10+ hours to finish.

while the game is repetitive and i'll tire of it soon, hearing the cheesy frequent voice acting by peter dinklage is getting real tired.

So the totally amazing level-cap gameplay is basically just the same shit over and over again with MOAR DIFFICULTY!!!!111! ??? Fucking yay

Played a couple heroic daily missions. No loot. Just placed second on the winning team in PVP. No loot.

No skippable cutscenes, terrible voice acting (Sorry Pete, but this fucking sucks. I wish I'd played the alpha because I just can't see how it could be much worse)

And to top it off Bungie spams the fuck out of my email address.

Seriously, fuck this game

Oh yeah, I forgot the ultra-uber-blow your mind-awesome raid that takes 10 hours. That I can't even attempt to play because I apparently DON'T GET ANY FUCKING LOOT for doing level-cap gameplay.

Seriously, WTF? How is anyone okay with this game?

How does one advance for 10 hours? Do they play through every area of the game? Is it confined to one small area?
10 hours is fucking nuts.
This games needs Diablo 3 levels of reevaluation. We have great gunplay with completely broken gameplay mechanics and a stupid questing system that makes no sense.

Probably because of bullet sponges.

Probably not going to happen either. Bungie thinks Destiny is a fucking masterpiece. Unless Bungie commits to drastically changing the game via DLC or patches then I really dont think this game will last another month.

Oh I bet you can guess what games I was most eagerly waiting for in 2014? Titanfall, Watch_Dogs and Destiny. Motherfucking fuck my life!

This is bullshit. There is content in there that I can not play simply because there is no way in hell I will have 10 hours of free time to do this. So I paid for something that I can not play? What the fuck?
