Destiny - Discussion Thread

Is there any benefit to building up Vanguard ranking first before faction ranking? I've read that collecting planet specific drops (spinmetal, relic shards, spirit bloom, etc) & trading them in for vanguard marks is a good way to go. Is that an effective method in addition to bounties?

it doesnt hurt. The thing with the factions is all their gear is relatively equivalent so far as ive seen. Doing bounties on patrol while completed events is probably the most efficient way you can do things for getting vanguard marks/rep

Do not trade in those mats for marks. Its a waste IMO. Those mats are better used to upgrade your weapons/armors.

Also in terms of rep grinding, Iron Banner is the worst.. you don't get rep at all for losing and when you carry a team just to lose, its very very frustrating.

I think top player on the losing side should still get full marks/rep IMO.

It will take a LOOOOOONG time to grind faction that way. I've found that just doing bounties with the FWC bond on is ranking me up reasonably quickly, and you can collect those mats at the same time anyway.

Also, scouring the planets for mats is boring. ;)

the Bond wont increase your rep any faster than vanguard rep. Its a 100% trade with no bonuses so grinding any faction rep wont be any faster than grinding vanguard rep. whichever one you currently have the most rep for will get you to level to get gear and weapons the fastest

Absolutely. I just think the factions have more interesting gear.:D

I have a maxed warlock and when I went to roll hunter both subclasses were already unlocked. Dunno if that is intentional or not.
Same. I'm glad it's like this because I immediately switched to Bladedancer to level that up first on Hunter.

Is there any point of leveling vanguard rep beyond 3 as opposed to leveling another faction rep given you already have one faction rep at 3? Example: You have vanguard, crucible, and fwc at level 3 and there is nothing left except leveling another faction rep to buy their gear.

I havent gotten there but from what ive heard when you level up a faction (including vanguard) you get some item rewards

I'm aware of that but that also applies to other factions.

Right but if you have vanguard rep at level 3 and another at 0, leveling vanguard rep another time will give you a few gauranteed items wheres leveling the other only give you the ability to buy items from the vendors. If the vendors have items you want more then great, otherwise sticking with the current to get rewards is probably a smarter choice. IDK i only have vangaurd up to level 2. Got sick of the grind and stopped playing a few weeks ago

I can't remember if leveling a faction from 0 to 1 gives me items. I think it did but I could be wrong.

IIRC I only ever got faction rewards when I hit level 3... don't recall getting faction rewards before then.

Do you get items for losing iron banner? Most of the rewards are random rewards after matches no? I havent looked at the rep gear at all. Also its a limited time event?

You get random "items" like any crucible match BUT you don't gain any iron banner rep (which makes iron banner basically useless against pre-mades) if you lose... you still get crucible marks and rep though. The rep gear is fantastic, I believe you can hit level 30 with them.. and they only cost 10 crucible marks (I checked yesterday.. double checked even!) that is just DIRT cheap for rank 3 gear. The problem is getting there... if you don't win you don't get anything and its a huge grind. Dumbest decision I've seen yet.

Iron banner should not allow pre-mades to even it out I guess.

have you done the math on how many wins you need to have enough rep to buy anything? Also i wonder if it is in fact a limited time event, like the queens mission, when it comes back i sure would hope you maintain your previous rep level

Thanks for allof the advice everyone. I think I'll hit Vanguard rank 3 & then start building up faction rank. I'm almost to Vanguard rank 2, so at least I can get more gear soon. The only issue is collecting enough vanguard marks. :(

Events are the fastest way to get marks. Someone linked it previously theres a website that has event timers and locations you can reference.

I joined the FWC but found out I didn't need any of the weapons so I went back to grinding crucible.

Grinding vanguard is simplest. Do bounties, public events, daily, weekly heroic and nightfall to get reps and marks fastest. You can also grind Strike Tiger playlist.
Losing in Iron Banner gets you +10 rep and 2 crucible marks. Winning gets you +25 and 3 crucible marks.

Just hit level 3 vanguard. Now grinding to get more marks.

^ to add to that. The +10 rep is crucible rep and not iron banner. Iron banner losses get you 0 iron banner rep.

Such a fun game

If only Bungie could attach electrodes to my balls they could electrocute me every time I think something fun and new is going to happen in Destiny. :D

Side note, three level 30's completed the standard Raid in 1 hour 9 mins. Of course they were all decked out and they had to trick the system and the Sunsinger Warlock was a must. He would commit suicide right before the teleport started so he could hang back while the other two went in and killed the Oracles.

Audio sucks and I would just skip the first 30 mins as that beginning portion takes the longest.

I actually watched a good deal of that video and found myself thinking, "This looks really boring".

Because it is boring. Skull-hammeringly so. I've resigned to the realization that its just a younger-generational thing, in terms of anyone that has the kind of record breaking free time to kill to keep playing past a certain point, after you've basically done and seen everything in the game and the same stuff is just repeating. PvP / Crucible is a little more understandable since every round is different, but raids and grinding for gear.. jesus. Enjoy. Seriously.

Did the raid for first time. Was fun. We also killed the last boss using the method to drop him over the ledge lol. Worked twice.

I am still level 27 though which sucks ass since I need more shards and I only got 6 through the raid in total. I am going to grind some more to hit level 28 but then that is it until the expansions roll on.

Was a lot of fun. Got about 78+ hours out of it. Something I did not expect given I was level 20 by the 15 hour mark. Give the game a solid 9/10. Made some new friends also which was completely unexpected.

I havent done the raid yet, was it pretty easy to do??

If you've done any wow raid, or are moderately capable of listening to simple instructions, its pretty easy. The key thing is to have the right weapons (each damage type preferably both sniper and fusion), and accept that autos are far better than almost any other primary for killing stuff.

Also turn your brightness up, half the raid is jumping around extremely dark areas

Thanks for the tip! Thankfully I only have fusions and snipers of differing elements on me! Sounds like I may hop on a raid this weekend :)

I've done the raid now twice and only ended up with Shards and Energy...Thanks bungie for a shitty reward algorithm

I can do PvE during events but the last one with the Awoken Queen didn't get me very far. I wound up just doing vanguard bounties again. :(

The events i mean are the random world events that pop up in games. Like defend the sat etc...if you track those over a map you can do loops to catch a bunch of them and get a ton of vanguard marks

You need at least one person who knows his way around. We did it in maybe 3-4 hours in total because we had newbies (like myself) who needed to be told what to do. Key was that there were guys who knew how to do the raid. It did take multiple tries though as we kept wiping quite a bit.

Also we spent about 1 hour just trying to cheese the boss to fall down. But once we did it was hilarious to watch the final boss just fall off the ledge.

I am happy I did it. Got an Auto and Shotgun from it. Also got about 6 shards and 2 energy. All the things I could use.

That's a great idea. I actually completed one last night. I don't mind doing them since they're fast paced & do give vanguard marks. Now I need to hunt down that website.

"There's an app for that". No Really. Several.

Wow used the website. It is pretty decent. Got 3 events within 30 mins on earth. Got 2 shards and 1 energy. Will definitely be using this for farming asc materials. Other ways are too painful tbh.
