Dell U3011 coming soon.

This dude is gonna cum in his pants when he gets his U3011 lol

Man I hope so!!!

They just shipped it out and it will be here on Wednesday the 24th. If I can get extra sexual gratification from it, then that would be awesome. Maybe that's why there isn't a CF reader. You turn the monitor on its side and under the stand there's a brand new ultra special latex slot. Since the monitor features such amazing side viewing, everything should look the same while you enjoy the slot. I forgot to order the monitor strap-down accessories from Dell, so I'm going to radio shack to pick up some 3rd party knockoffs. I might also need to pick up some lube, but since it's a machine I don't know what kind of viscosity weight I might need.

Wow, mine's coming on the 24th too!! In the middle of my exams. How nice. LOL.
Now off to find bigger than HD porn... hmm

Hey guys, my U3011 just came in and it is awesome!

What calibration tools do you guys suggest I use (besides a Spyder 4 :p), or should I just leave it at factory settings?

Also, any set of tests I should go through like testing for dead pixels and stuff?

The beauty of this monitor is the factory pre-calibration.

Rock the AdobeRGB and youll be a very happy camper

According to the reviews I've read, the factory pre-calibration wasn't anything to write home about. It's always best to get a colorimeter if you work with color sensitive items.

Its good... I wrote home about it..

The review from TFTCentral shows that the factory calibration (especially sRGB) was very good and close to the post-colorimeter calibration results.

Mine just got here I had enough time to hook it before I had to go to work. Fed Ex had it on the truck all freaking day till 6:15...fuckers!! I went from Samsung T260HD to this monster and it dwarfed my poor Samsung. The colors right off the bat were amazing!!! I can't wait to go home on my lunch break to try out some games.

Just got back from my lunch break and all I have to say is OMFG!!! This is by far the best tech purchase I have ever made hands down. I spent the whole hour throwing all my games at this thing and didn't notice any input lag or ghosting in FPS games or MMO's. My work night can't end fast enough so I can get back this baby....

I also ran a couple blu-ray movies and once again I was just amazed by the quality of this beast. I hope by the weekend to get a couple videos up of my old Samsung VS Dell just to show people what a real monitor looks like!

... In all cases, the same result - after the display wakes up from energy saving mode, the colors in custom mode are off!
...
I've also noticed that custom mode sometimes wacks out completely (for lack of a better term :) after waking up from power saving mode.

I have just purchased a Dell U3011 as well. Just like you, when my monitor goes to sleep, the custom RGB mode results in a corrupted display.

Yikes! Why is the first I've heard of this? If this is a design issue and not your particular monitors, why hasn't anybody said anything about this? There are quite a few seemingly color-calibration-knowledgeable people participating in this thread, so you'd think it would've come up by now. Note that I'm not doubting you at all. In fact, you're making me seriously reconsider my decision to buy this monitor.

Anybody else able to confirm this issue? This is really a deal-breaker for me and probably other people who need an accurate calibrated monitor.

Hey guys. Can you tell me if your screens are Made in China or from Mexico? I ask because I've seen a dozen from China, but I have seen a Mexico one.

Anyone else have the problem when you have maximized windows in the background and you turn off your monitor then turn it back on, the windows (i.e firefox, windows explorer) shrink in size? I then have to maximize it again. btw, this only happens with display port, not dvi.

assemble in Mexico

the price is about $1000 before tax now. Does DELL will offer the price adjustment?

I saw the deal for 25% off on these and couldn't resist. Picked one up and can't wait to get it, even though I'm extremely happy with my 3008WFP.

Yay for triple 30" monitors! :D

Yay...for...non-matching...30" monitors. :(

Seriously, triple 30's is way overkill for me and even with a second GTX 480 I doubt I'd have the power to push NV Surround/Eyefinity so I'll likely be selling one of mine. I am not doing tri-SLI.

One thing that made me bite on this was that I could up the warranty to 5 years for only $100 more, plus I get an additional year from using my AmEx. That means I'll have peace of mind for 6 years, which should last me until we have something even more awesome than the U3011 like a 120 hz. backlit LED version. :)

One question: can anyone tell me what revision of the U3011 is shipping now? Are these up to A02 yet? It was just my luck to order one of these before they could be had for $1012, and it'll be my luck for there to be a new revision that fixes things right after I receive mine. :-/

I am too, waiting for a 120hz 30".
Mine's coming on Monday night (44 hours from now). Only ordered it on Wednesday. Awesome!

Does the stand go high enough to switch the panel into portrait mode like the zr30w? I ordered 3 of these guys yesterday and need to know if I should be looking for a few new monitor stands for them...

So one review out of many proves?

That isn't my reading. sRGB emulation isn't as good as U2711/U2410, Red and Green points are off quite a bit, and white point is way off:

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/images/dell_u3011/default_srgb2.jpg

"It couldn't actually cover the sRGB space as well as the emulation mode from the U2410 or U2711 which was a shame, leaving more of a gap in greens and stretching even further in red shades. Reds may appear over-saturated or too 'neon' even in this emulation mode, but it's certainly cut the green colour space back compared with the extended gamut modes."

You're right as it refers to the emulation mode. I deduced the following:

"Performance wise the default factory settings were very pleasing in standard, AdobeRGB and sRGB modes which was great to see. The factory calibration of gamma and colours has done a good job here and it's a nice investment by Dell. We'd like to see more screens factory calibrated like this as it's very important to most normal users, who would not necessarily have access to a colorimeter or reliable calibration methods. Black depth, contrast ratio, responsiveness and input lag were also all more than adequate."

In the pros at the bottom of the review, it also states "Great colour accuracy and gamma set up at factory defaults. Including factory calibrated Adobe RGB and sRGB modes"

I believe the reason nobody has mentioned it could be:
- The problem may affect only one batch of monitors (although it seems more like a firmware problem since I can return to a normal display after choosing the option "reset color setting")
- To see the problem, you need to be using Custom RGB mode and have the monitor go to sleep. Reviews on websites don't test the monitor for weeks and may not have been in that situation, and since the monitor is new maybe few people have had the chance to report this issue. I have the exact same problem as bad144 and he mentions seeing it in several of his monitors.
- Most people probably use the other pre-set modes, or want perfect color and do a calibration in which case you don't need to use the Custom RGB mode.

In my case, for photography, I found that the Warm mode was the best. It actually matches pretty well the Standard mode when I use the ICC profile made by TFTCentral calibrating the monitor they had. If I want perfection and perfect color for my specific monitor, then I'll buy an X-Rite Eye-One Display 2 and will calibrate my screen. I can do that in Standard or Warm mode and it would result in virtually the same colors if done properly. Or I can use the sRGB mode if I want to restrict the color space. I don't need Custom RGB if I calibrate. In fact the reviews point out that you get better color calibration (lower Delta E) with Standard mode than Custom RGB.

So in a nutshell:
1. You want approximately good colors: use one of the preset modes. Standard, Warm (I found that sRGB and Adobe RGB the colors weren't as good, and the Gamma and brightness either, unless I use the TFTCentral profiles). You can also adjust brightness to 0 and contrast to 40-50 for better results. You can also try the TFT Central ICC profiles, made with the specific monitor they were testing, so not perfect for every monitor but a good approximation.
2. You want perfection, and you get a calibrator.

I got mine today and I am super happy with it. All I have tried on it game wise is WoW and SC2 and it looks amazing. I am going to try Left 4 Dead 2 on it next. All in all I am a happy customer.

I have been playing with the display and there appears to be 3 dead pixels at the top of the display..... normally it would not bother me, but I spent a good deal of money on this so it does. Good news is I called Dell and they are sending a replancement for it. Other than that I still love it.

Just got mine on Saturday.

Loving it thus far.

I do dabble in photography, but I am by no means a graphic designer or anything like that, so color accuracy is more of a bonus than a requirement.

Some thoughts:

1.) Stock monitor stand makes the screen sit very low. I can't raise it up as much as I'd like. I am considering standing it ontop of a thick dictionary, or looking for an aftermarket stand.

2.) Despite excellent IPS viewing angle, this thing is so big, that when sitting close and looking at dark screens, the extreme edges become shiny and non-black.

3.) Manual could be better. Some of the features are very poorly documented. For instance, it would be nice to know what - exactly the different preset modes do, and what the sound connector is for (Is it simply an HDMI audio pass-through, and if so, is it shut off when not in use, or would it produce a humm if connected to amplified speakers.)

Other than this, I absolutely love it thus far. Surprisingly it's actually lighter than my 24" Dell 2405FPW I bought almost 6 years ago now. I'm also amazed at how well it upscales 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 content. You almost can't tell any difference to running on a native panel.

Now my GTX580 just needs to hurry on up and get here so I can get better framerates at 2560x1600 :p

Just got my u3011 in today and set it up. Coming from a dual 24 (1900X1200) setup, the only thing I find myself saying is WOW. Its massive. Simply massive. Loving all of this screen real estate. Colors are nice and bright as well.

I received my U3011 on the 21st of this month. So far I have not had a chance to mess with it at all because I need to work to pay for it; however, this thing is bad ass! It is almost too big ( I said almost).

Just got it. Man, even coming from a 32" TV, this thing is big as hell!
Text looks hard to read.. what dpi/web browsing settings do you guys use? I may just be adjusting from coming from a 32" tv though. Pixels so much smaller.

Haha, I went from a 37" monitor @ 1920x1080 to a 30" several months ago. Talk about the text seeming small. It did take a few days to get used to, but I left dpi and text size at the defaults to see if I could live with it. I did adapt even though it seemed uncomfortably small at first, and now there's no going back.

I fired up the 37" again and text was simply MASSIVE. And I hated having to scroll so much more due to not being able to have as much content on the screen.

Can't wait until my U3011 arrives!! It'll be my third 30" but I'm still super excited.

Currently I have a Westinghouse 37" LCD - 37Lvm-w3 as a computer monitor. Its dying, and needs to be replaced.

I am considering the following:

1. Dell 30" 3011 (or whatever is the newest version of the Dell 30" high end line)
2. LG 37LE5300 - for the 120hz refresh
3. LG 37LD450 - only 60hz refresh, but only 23ms of input lag
4. Panasonic 37D2 - over 40ms input lag (as reported over at AVSforums)

Question:
Which should I choose? What has your experience been with going from a 37" to a 30"? Experience with 30" in general? Do you find the 16:10 aspect ratio a great advantage over 16:9? Do you find the higher resolution to be quite a bit more awesome than lowly 1080p?

my desk is about 32" deep and I try to sit about 37" away from the screen but I'm sure I get closer occasionally.

Please advise? Price is no concern.

Ooo.. that's good to hear! I'm just waiting for people to call me crazy (they always do) when they see my new monitor. lol. :p

Which mode should I use (standard/sRGB/AdobeRBG), and is there any setting up to do? A little confused.

I’m just confused about your lineup. But to answer your question about experience, the U3011 is going to decimate your 37” monitors in color quality, pixel density, and a host of other things which makes the U3011 a dream machine. But the U3011 is really for people who are interested in working with Photoshop and other such programs which may require the huge color gamuts and tonality available with the new monitor.
Should *YOU* choose the U3011? Probably not. You don’t seem like the kind of guy who would benefit from professional tools. You seem more like the gimmick guy who thinks bigger is better and probably couldn’t even see the differences techies talk about when they consider monitors. Just save your money & buy a 50” anything TV for your house or upgrade your already 55” or whatever it is that you have. You probably have a whole lot of nothing there too. Just throw money at it. See if it will improve

Just use Standard and sRGB. Adobe is for Photoshop work.

Mine came here last night. :D

Looks nice!!! My U3011 is scheduled for delivery tomorrow, but I have to work. :( I'm going to try and work something out as I'd hate for it so stay with FedEx over the holiday weekend.

On a side note, I just connected a 3.5mm male to male stereo plug from the monitor out, to a splitter in to my computer speakers.

Now whenever I switch my monitor to the HDMI input from the cable box, it automatically forwards the sound from the HDMI to my computer speakers.

Watching TV is not why I bought this beast, but nice feature none the less. :)

I wonder how well this screen will work if the 1440p standard ever materializes.

I've posted on this before (as well as "bad144"), but could anyone who has a Dell U3011 do this quick test: switch to Custom RGB mode after the monitor has been to "sleep" mode. Is the mode working normally? If you are in another mode, let the monitor go to sleep, then switch to Custom RGB, is the display and colors working normally?

Thank you very much in advance! :)

I can do this when I get home.

So just to make sure I understand you, this would be my test methodology?

1.) Set custom mode to something that is ridiculously off so it would be apparent if it were not working.

2.) Set monitor to this custom mode and let it go to sleep.

3.) Wake monitor (by jiggling mouse or whatever)

4.) Check if the custom mode is the same as in 1.)

Correct?
