Dell U2711

Correct, my 2209wa has horizontal uniformity issues, although I was one of the very first to receive my display on these forums. For the price of the 2209wa, to me, this is kind of acceptable. For the price of the U2711? Absolutely not.

Yes you were, and my 2209WA had the tinting issue to a small extent (colder on the left, warmer on the right), but for the price and capability this was something to easily gloss over. LG needs to fix this. My S-PVA 2709W did not have this specific problem whatsoever. Alternatively, neither my LCD2690WUXI nor Dell 3008WFP have this issue either, so LG has cut some costs somewhere, maybe in the polarizer or something there? Just a thought.

I'm disappointed that this monitor doesn't come with Portrait mode ability. I'll be waiting for the NEC 27" to see if it has that. Also the monitor's high input lag is an issue for gaming.

I have yet to see a monitor that is 27" and larger with the ability to do portrait out of the box. Monitor arms are always a good investment there. The largest screen I've had that does it is my 26" NEC. The 2709W does not, nor does the Samsung 275T.

"Just because a display has a potentially wider gamut doesn't mean you have to use it." Uh huh. Right. And how do I "not use it" when the app isn't color aware? That's what I thought.

You're right. A joke indeed. People who don't know any better shouldn't be reviewers.

Not impressed. Jarred needs to get his head out of the sand (and possibly elsewhere) regarding this subject.

EDIT: Later on he seems to understand the problem and why it's important for people to know that wider gamut is not better.

So the u2711 S-IPS has CCFL backlighting instead of LED, apparently this means better color gamut than most LED displays out there today. Think it's better to go CCFL still or is LED guaranteed to last longer?

My Dell 2005FPW S-IPS still works fine today, probably well past 15,000 hours I have used it constantly and on a daily basis since late 2004.

neither my LCD2690WUXI nor Dell 3008WFP have this issue either,

Are you sure you have no tinting on these. I don't see one on my 2490, but if I measure it with a colorimeter, I definitely see a left right shit from about 6400K to 6700K. But since I can't really see it, I don't care.

It seems to be a fairly constant issue with LG IPS panels.

I never noticed any on either the Dell or NEC, but I used the i1 to check the 3008WFP, and indeed there is only about 115K difference from left to right, which is good. .

I'll have to check my friend's 27" IMac next time a bit more closely to see if it seems better or worse in this regard to the naked/glassed eye.

"RE: High Gamut displays by JarredWalton, 3 hours ago
This is not correct. A high gamut screen has the potential to display a wider range of color, but it doesn't inherently do so."

He's an idiot.

Coming to this one a little late but it is amazing that someone on a major tech site could be so ignorant on the very subject he/she is writing about. If the same sort of lack of knowledge was applied to a hard drive or CPU review the website would be being pummeled with derision. Not only does the reviewer not understand how color gamuts work on PCs and media formats but neither does he understand what a color calibrator can and not do.

I am still waiting on the NEC refresh. :D

Nope, he is right. You are forgetting. The 27" is 16:9 and that makes it much smaller.

The 27" is barely bigger than the 24" except in width. While the 30" is a big jump in both dimensions.

And it just isn't in vertical, total area is +20% 24" vs 27", but +30% 27" vs 30".

thanks for that, made me think twice about a 27" over a 23" eyefinity setup!

Here's also a applet for comparing sizes that is very interactive and useful:

The Dell U2711 has an embargo (sales and information release) until the 9th of February. I guess we'll be seeing more reviews after that date.

Any idea when I'll be able to get my hands on a couple of these? Really need something soon! Whats the origin of the embargo?

Very encouraging video review from CNET looks amazing. Really, I hope Dell get it right this time in regards to their QC problems...
I want a new monitor now and the next generation of NEC panels seem so far away, I'd buy a 2490WUXi but they seem to be impossible to find in Europe these days (I've looked so hard).

If Dell deliever the goods and manage to get this monitor on the market without any of the major issues we've seen in the past, maybe I can forget about splashing out on one of those H-IPS based EIZO's.
This part of the review was encouraging:

"Performance:
We tested the Dell UltraSharp U2711 with its DVI connection in the Standard (default) preset. <snip> The U2711 scored well in all of our color and uniformity tests--it didn't have the color compressing issue that we saw with the U2410 or the slight pink screen tint."

I'm excited about this.

Quick question after watching the CNET video, will this require 2 DVI cables to run like the 30" Dell due to the resolution? Curious if I'll have to get another video card to run a 2nd one or not.

Not 2 dvi cables but a dual link dvi is required to run at these higher resolutions.

Whats the origin of the embargo?

Just the official date from Dell. On the same date we'll see it online on the Dell websites.

I have the U2711 standing on my desk now next to the U2410. I can't tell you guys a lot but what I can say is that the resolution is very impressive. A detailed review with calibration reports will be online on the 9th of February.

Way cool, I am looking forward to your review. Could you also take a screen shot of a 1080p movie or quicktime trailer on your desktop without blowing it up to full screen. I am just curious how much extra desktop space will be.

Thanks mistar!

Sure :)

We have been seeing it on the desks of too many chosen not exactly few for the last month now, I've never seen this with an lcd monitor before.....dell is being a real tease, at least give a general date to the public.

Are you envious for not be chosen as one of the display testers? :p:p

I'm that obvious huh? But if some of the impressions we have been getting are any indication, people have been doing a lot of playing around with movies and games rather than technical analysis.

Plus the fact that we have someone that is bragging that he has one and then will not say anything about it.

I know about NDAs, but really, just tell us the release date and keep the rest to your self.

I would love the extra resolution, but the aspect ratio comparisons on the previous page reck it for me.

Dave

16:9 aspect ratio would be a problem for me on a display with only 1080p resolution, since that's a step down in vertical viewing size from 1600x1200.
My preference in any case would be 16:10 as it feels like screen real estate is being put to better use, however with 2560x1440 resolution it won't be the issue that could potentially hold me back from buying it.

I'm most concerned at the moment with the AG coating, and the infamous Dell & LG (match made in hell?) QC problems.

Hoping to buy 2 of these and get my 1st non TN panels and have something that will last me for several years! Was thinking of going with Eyefinity but I don't game that much so it would be a waste!

When someone gets their hands on an actual production model of this monitor, I would greatly appreciate it, if you could measure the minimum possible distance from the desk/table to the bottom of the image (50mm on the 2408). This is important to me because I intend to place the monitor on top of a stereo-amplifier on my (very crowded) desk, and my current LG 26 inch could comfortably have the image a bit lower.

get another stand or mount it on the wall

Ordered up 2 of them. You'll be waiting a long time for any discounts on it I think (otherwise I'd wait as well)...

True but if you buy it using a Discover Card, I think you get 10% cashback(but I need to double check)

Ugh, they're up for order but I'm trying so hard to wait for NEC to show their's off....

I'd love to have another 27" for my PC sitting next to my 27" iMac.

Can someone tell me why this screen is worth $1100 besides the resolution? I really wanna order two of them, but I just don't see how its value compares to a 3008/7 which seems a lot larger for the price... I'm not to up to date on the monitor technology/benefits.

Some people like the 16:9 ratio. I personally don't care all that much for it less then 23", but that's just me.

Anyone know if there are going to be other manufacturers coming out with 2560x1440 panels soon?
