Dell U2711

This deal is acting weird. This morning I saw it was down to 740 in the link I provided. Now it's back to 780.

Weird. Same thing happened for me. It showed a big discount last night and today nothing. Wish I could get that price again.

so how many centimeters is height and width (without bezels) in U2711? Please. :)
Is it that hard to convert inches to centimenters, seriously? You can even use google and type in '23.53 inches to cm', and same for the height.

Thank you but I want in centimeters. ...
My faith in the [H] forum just dropped a notch.

Anyway, I've been patiently waiting for my Dell 2405FPW to die so I can buy a bigger monitor, but it's still going strong after 6 years of hard use. To date, I haven't seen the famed 'sparkly' coating on any of these monitors in person. Can anyone think of a monitor I could see in-store somewhere that compares in terms of AG coating?

Nah, it is not washed out, just from post processing in lightroom since the photo was really dark. There is also no white glow that I can see.

Better pic.

I can take a better pic of it if anyone wants with anything on the screen.

Can you take a couple pics with text on white background and more close up to the screen than this one? this one was kind far away I just want to see the AG coating on the U2711

My U2711 had 2 dead pixels pop up a few days ago, so I spoke with someone from Dell. They are shipping a new monitor out to me in 3-5 business days which is awesome, but I want to know why they overnight shipped me a box of cables....

I don't think you will find it in stores anymore but I hated the sparkly anti-glare coating on the 20.1" viewsonic vx2025m I used to have. Compromised text , etc. Was glad to be rid of it. I would definitely recommend you see any monitor with complaints about similar heavy ag coatings in person if at all possible and have a good return policy on top of that.

Can U2711 display resolution 2560x1440 if I connect it to computer with DVI cable or I need too connect it to computer with DisplayPort?

Is it normal for the back of the u2711 to get really hot?

The U2711 does use a CCFL so it'll be hotter than a LED lit monitor; unless it's so hot you can't hold your hand on it I wouldn't worry about it.

Haha true that. I remember when I had 3x 3007wfp-hc over the winter, my room would be 10 degrees hotter than the living room if I kept my doors closed!

What is it the last revision?
What are the difference from A00 Revision to the last one?

I have seen some delay from turn on and POST pc and turn on of the monitor (I have A00 revision). Is it normal? I can't see GRUB menù before start Ubuntu 'because delay...

No one?

I'm pretty sure that is normal, and that this monitor just has a long startup time. I don't have mine yet, but that's something I've read while researching it.

Yes, that's normal with today's slow high resolution (more than 1920x1200) monitors.

LED backlit ones turn on pretty much instantly as far as warm-up goes. Some monitors with scalers suffer really long delay times between resolution switches too though, as stated in some tech site reviews.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/2922/2

Processing lag (a.k.a. "input lag") is definitely present, and it appears to be due in part to the digital scaler. Like the Dell 3008WFP, the U2711 supports a bunch of input options, many of which can't handle the native resolution. That means it needs a hardware scaler to work with lower resolution VGA and analog inputs. The result is slightly more processing lag than what we've measured on 30" IPS displays that don't have a hardware scaler. The other type of lag we noticed is a delay in powering up the LCD and changing resolutions. The LCD takes around 3 seconds to power on, but it can take an additional 3.5 to as much as 15 seconds to sync to the current resolution. It's extremely slow compared to many other LCDs in this regard. Fire up a game that runs at a different resolution than your desktop and you might have a black screen for up to 15 seconds (3.5 to 5 seconds is more common).

so how bad is the upscaling on the u2711?

i was thinking about replacing my excellent trustworthy glossy LG 23inch 1080p monitor to the u2711, but then i read somewhere that if you get directv / blu ray player or something hooked up to it, the upscaling will make it more grainy and less sharp?

how does 1080p material/content look on this monitor? Will it cause any stretching or black blars or quality problems?

thanks for any assistance you can provide me.

Does anyone have a u2711 disassemble walk through or guide? I tried googling for it and don't see one.

My monitor either has left side of the screen screw up or doesn't display at all unless i tap on the back between the center and left side (about 1/3rd the way). I'm guessing something isn't making full contact occasionally.

I got it second hand on ebay and it seems the previous owner had a warranty replacement which they didn't return so Dell won't honor the warranty and the owner isn't returning calls/e-mails and ebay/paypal won't help because it's been over 45 days... so warranty is not happening...

wait so i bought my monitor used off of ebay. i never did any sort of warranty transferring. what do i have to do to get this warranty with my name on it?

can i just contact dell and get it replaced regardless of registration of my info?

Would the folks who have opened up their U2711s please describe anything they've noticed about the control buttons? I'm going to reskin some monitors in wood and brass (somewhat "steampunk" style), and I would love to use the 2711, but I'm concerned that the fancy "capacitive touch" buttons will be hard to make work.

Thank you!

not sure what you are asking but the buttons would probably be best off if they had nothing covering them

he wants to build a new bezel for the U2711, if he selects it. However, he doesn't know what the U2711s button scheme on the inside is.

Just ordered one. First new display in a long time. Hopefully the sRGB color quality will be as solid as the reviews have indicated.

One can only hope, fingers officially crossed.

Today I decided to go check out the Dell U2711 in person at my local PC Microcenter here in Dallas, TX, and boy was I really dissapointed. After all the reviews I read on it, I was really wanting to like this monitor as I am looking to buy a 27 inch IPS monitor. The ANTI GLARE coating on it is terrible!!!!!! It actually gave me a headache while trying to read text on it. Either the settings that the store has for the dell monitor is really crappy or the monitor itself just sucks.

lol. AG. Either you hate it, or love it XD.

EDIT: I take that back, there is the, "don't care" crowd :p

It's not just you, sammieboy. I had the same experience with the Dell U3011. Worst display I have ever used. Ever. Your best bet at this point is the Apple LED Cinema Display 27" or the upcoming Samsung SA850 27".

Same here - U2711 huge disappointment due primarily to AG treatment. Cost me $50 to find out (return shipping to my ebay seller. ) At least you found out for free!

I have considered the U2711 and ACD for a long time. Now, I'm paranoid about the AG coating. I've seen pictures of the removing process, and I didn't like how the coating looked when it was coming off. How bad of an issue can this be with glasses or bad eyes?

I keep hearing about ghosting on this monitor this is what is making me stay away, monitor looks so dam beautiful though.

I bought this monitor on a special "Days of Dell Deals" for $729.99 Canadian, down from $1099.99.

My desire for this monitor was that it has a calibrated sRGB mode where Dell basically guarantees that sRGB and Adobe RGB modes will have maximum Delta E 94 of 5.0 or less.

I received it yesterday and opened it up today and looked at it for about 20 minutes.

Here are my initial impressions:

Pros:

1) sRGB mode indeed looks pretty well calibrated. The report showed maximum Delta E 94 of 4.0 or less of all colors and I believe it based on my eyeballs
2) Wide range of backlight regulation. Can go very bright or very dim without using panel blocking or digital manipulation of panel colors which reduces contrast
3) Pretty good stand. No pivot but that's as expected
4) Many working inputs
5) Pretty good brightness uniformity across the panel. Nothing stood out negatively in this area, and no flashlighting or notable backlight bleed

Cons:

1) Probably one of the strongest AG coatings I've seen. Notably worse than my 3008WFP, and probably almost as bad as the worst I've seen (Apple Cinema 23")
2) One stuck pixel. First Dell monitor I've ever gotten with a dead or stuck pixel. I'm running a dead pixel fixer to cycle colors while I'm out to see if that is resolved. If not I may return it under their "perfect panel" BS
3) Somewhat visible cold-to-warm (ie. blue to pink/red) left-to-right tint on white across the panel
4) Surprisingly I would say the white/blue glow on blacks was more than my 3008WFP. Not a big deal but more surprising considering the 3008WFP is a bigger IPS panel

All in all I'd give it a 7/10 for display quality. The AG coating would not be such a big deal if this monitor didn't have such a tight/small dot pitch.

It was nice to view an sRGB capable screen for the first time in a while at home though, but for the price I'd say I expected a bit more from the panel quality.

Do you think the coating is really worse, or does it just seem so because of the smaller pitch?

Either way, I definitely do think that AG needs to be reduced on smaller dot pitch screens...

It definitely seems stronger and "coarser" than my 3008WFP on solid colors. I could also use the adjective of "uneven" in relation to that.

My opinion is that coupled with the tighter dot pitch, I could see why people view this as an issue.

I still don't understand why AUO and Samsung panels, and even LG's A-TW polarized panels seem to have a much better balance between anti-glare and clarity than LG's normal IPS panels.

It would be nice to see LG fix this and the slight tinting issue.

This was even mentioned in a paper in SID 2010 that AG performance needs to improve with increasing dot pitch. I'd like to know exactly what was said and what metrics were used.
