Dell’s UltraSharp 2005FPW widescreen 20-inch LCD monitor.

When I first got my monitor, I had minimal backlighting and only one stuck-pixel (green). The colors are so much more vibrant on this monitor than others I'm used to (my laptop, work monitor, other generics, etc). I found myself staying on the computer just because I love using this monitor.

After a few weeks of heavy gaming though, I noticed some backlight creeping in on the upper-right corner. I'd massage it out and it would go away, but it progressively got worse (looked like an equilateral triangle w/6" long sides in corner). So I tried the trick of putting the monitor face down when warm to help reseal anything that may have worked loose. I put it away overnight and the next day (~18 hrs later) pulled it out expecting to see no more backlighting...I was disappointed.

Frustrated, contemplating the much detailed tech support horror stories (I'm well past my 21 day grace period now), I remembered a couple of people mentioning that their backlighting issues went away when in a cold environment. My computer is in a corner desk, in a small room with poor ventilation, so after a while, the heat really builds up. I put a fan in the corner, just behind the monitor to encourage better ventilation and voila! my backlighting has completely vanished!

This monitor truly is wonderful to work on, if you're even slightly bothered by the backlighting, evaluate the heat in the area, and if you can cool it down, you may be pleasantly surprised. I know that I was.

So what happens after the 21 day period. You cannot send it back, no warrenty?

You can only send it back under warranty. The 21 days is like a trial period. You can return it for refund basically no questions asked within that 21 days. After that, you can probably get replacements if your monitor can be considered "defective", but it may be hard to get your money back.

Maybe try purchasing with a credit card that offers extended return periods. Like the American Express Blue I used (no annual fee and pay of time) and it extends return periods to 90 days and also adds 1 year to the warranty. I haven't tried to enforce the 90 day return period yet, but I think if Amex can't get dell to return it they'd credit you upto $300 per item, $1000 a year.

Well, number three has one dead/stuck pixel and the colors are a little washed out compared to one and two. I'm out... not waiting around to see how many more show up. The first two started out with none then number two jumped up to six or seven. What a shame and what a waste of time. :(

So after the 21 days, you just lose the refund. But as far as any backlight or pixel issue, its the same replacement policy?

Now does the 21 day policy start when you received your first monitor, or after you have kept one for 21 days+?

Have anyone found it harder to get a replacement after the 21 days?

Just wondering before I spend $500+

Thanks
Jon

I think some still have got replacements easily after 21 days. Not sure how they consider backlighting under warranty, but I now under their policy 5 dead pixels qualifies for a replacement, but how would they know how many you have.

The only thing is, after that 21 days they only send your refurbs, which seem to be the ones we are returning with nothing fixed and resent out. Some people get clusters of deadpixels with a refurb, so if you have 5 dead pixels and ask for an exchange you can easily get a replacement that's worse, as if they never refurbished it besides placing a sticker on the box that says reburbished.

Also, I believe the 21days starts the day your first screen says it has been shipped.

E-mailing for replacement can usually take 24hrs for a response, then if they agree it can take 1-2 days to show in order status, then if they have it instock it will ship overnight.

ordred one last week, should get it in today or tomorrow... going to lan all weekend with it.. hopefully i wont regret the decision to purchase this moniter :D

what tools/programs are you useing to test/stress/configure the moniter..
i read the cnet article.. ..

Yea, TimothyB hit the nail on the head, they start to send you refurbs (which recipients in this thread report as being typically defective) as replacements after that period instead of new units. Also, the 21 day period is supposed to start on the day of invoice from what I understand, which is the day that it leaves Dell's hands.

So what happens after the 21 day period. You cannot send it back, no warrenty?

Well the LCD i have now I am planning to keep, Feb 2005 A01 with hardly any backlight leakage and no pixel problems :D I know its difficult to run into a perfect screen, and I am scared that I will be given something worse, so I think I will be pretty safe with this one. Besides, I'm pretty happy with it anyhow.

But theres one thing - I have a Dell 2005FPW (the first one i had, which has been replaced by the one above) in a box waiting for a delivery person to pick it up. How long do they take to pick up the old LCD, since mine has been here for a week now. I could have been using dual-screens :(

Well a car is different, since its likely that most models of that car are in perfect working order, and this isn't on that sort of level of money. Even so, if it had the same level of 'damage' as my Dell currently has, then I would still accept the car if it had this good value for money.

If it came with a shipping label to mail one back, it's you that's suppose to drop it off at the shipping company they went with. If it's DHL (airborn express), go to their site to search for drop off locations, and probably a business due to the size of the box. Or use their feature to setup a pickup time.

I found a small shipping company near me and went in and double checked that they were a drop off location, so I brought in the box and left it there to be picked up.

Though, I still have another screen they didn't give me a shipping label and it's now 24days since the last shipped screen to me, no bill or charges for it habe been made yet.

My replacement didn't turn out to well, and I will be keeping my first one which really wasn't bad at all.

Well, my replacement didn't come with an airbill, does that mean Dell doesn't want it back? In all their emails they stated that if the item was to be returned, it would have a pre-paid airbill along with a packing list. Does dell not want it back?

I think the e-mails say if there is no return airbill then contact them to make arrangments. When I was setting up another replacement I mentioned among 4 e-mails that the first replacement didn't have an return airbill, and that part of the e-mail went unanswered every time.

The 2nd replacement did come with an airbill, but only one when I needed two. I sent one back and now it's been 24 days since that 2nd replacement was shipped to me and they haven't charged me for the extra screen I still have.

i just ordered and received a Feb A01 Rev on the 16th. Really speedy delivery- ordered after 5pm ESTon Monday and received it before 10 AM on Wednesday. I was in fear that the speedy delivery meant i was getting stuck with somebody's returned monitor, even had a nightmare before i ordered of a really horrible problem with the monitor like a row of 1000 dead pixels :p

Anyways, now that I've received it.. the back light problem seemed pretty bad at first, but it's either goten better or i'm getting used to it. I only notice it when i specificalyl check for it on blank screensaver, or some other times, but when something calls for a black background it is definitely much darker/uniform. The backlight leakage is worst in the left upperhand corner but like i said, i can live with it. Especialyl because there are ZERO dead pixels that i can find, and i've run the dead pixel finders like 3-4 times a day since I received the monitor. It is huge, runs beautifully, i DO notice things blur a bit when i move stuff but that also has stopped bugging me as much as it did at first. Coming off of a very crappy 15 inch hand me down CRT which had HORRIBLE flickering and gave me headaches, i can say this monitor makes me happy beyond words.

Anyways, as said, the backlight issue is definitely more than bearable and mine has no dead or stuck pixels. it is gorgeous and i enjoy the widescreen as the games i play lately support it. Goodluck to anyone who is in the process of ordering one. Just calling Dell's 1800 number got me a very good deal. free shipping, 549.00+tax

if anyone has any tips on things i should do with my new monitor like new drivers that i should download, i would appreciate hearing about those.

"could my 9800Pro support its resolution? im about to get one."

Yes, That's what I use. 1680x1050 with a 9800pro 128mb

I use a Radeon 9500Pro and have no problems.

Though I have this to add, I got home last night and sat down at my desk, and as I went to the start button I noticed that there was a dead/stuck pixel. I'm pretty bumed, cause I thought this one was about as perfect as they came, now a dead pixel, anyone else have a problem like this?

Yep, gone through three displays and all had stuck pixels after running them for a few days. One got up to seven. The one that I kept has one short of half stuck on. Can only see it on black and have to really hunt for it. None of the displays had stuck off pixels. The ones you can find with the checkered board patterns. My fourth on is on the way. But it was on a new order. Someone posted some e-coupons and I got it for $507 before tax. I’m planning on keeping the best of the four as they are offering me $100 off the first order to keep the best of the three.

Just curious. The people who have exchanged their monitors more than once, what would you say the time you spent on the phone with support? Is the service better than average with the monitors? I heard some one say that the support on the FP monitors was different?

Sending them an email works out well too, just give them the serial number, order number, your name, address, etc.

BTW, where can I email Dell to have them charge me back some money, since the monitor is now 500 dollars?

If your lucky they might match any price changes within 30 days, but that's only the retail price, they won't price match specials and such. And what I mean by lucky is that their price match is only for full systems. Though, when the screens went down to $749 from $800, some people got $50 back, some were told only for systems, some dell reps compared the discounted price your ordered with to the retail price saying it wasn't any lower when they shouldn't be looking at the discounts, and finally some got $50-75 coupons.

Oh, thanks anyway. Being the cheapskate I am, I was hoping they would charge me back 80 some dollars.

Well here in the UK, I found that I had to call them up more than once simply because I could not locate the area of Technical support who would specialise with monitors. I eventually did by asking others :p. Also, I could not do it on the net either, because the Dell technical support site, whatever you tried to do on there, it demanded for a support serial number of some sort, usually found on the back of everything (back to their 486's) except Dell monitors. There was even a checklist you could go through, and monitors wern't on there. Although that doesn't quite satisfy the question you was asking, I thought I could share that. I'm not sure on the strength of their support on monitors compared to the rest of their products, but they seemed to send me a replacement non-refurb monitor without hesitation.

They still haven't attempted to pick my monitor up, and I am so tempted to do dual-view LCD's. I am not going to say anything to them until they actually ask me to do something, since they specifically said on the phone that someone would come and pick it up soon after. Thats if they decide to pick it up!! :D

Same here .unreal, my monitor is ready and packed, but nobody has come around to pick it up. I have emailed them several times and they all said that it would be picked up within 24 hours, 24 hours later the shipper is a no-show.

But I have to give some credit to Dell's Customer Service, they charged me back 45 dollars no questions asked when the 2005FPW 25% and 55 dollars of deal came.

I have found the best way to deal with Dell for replacements is through [email protected], provided you give them the right info. They usually reply within one day.

Same here, my monitor has been packed and ready ever since the replacement arrived - and its been waiting next to the door for more than a week now. I am so tempted to use dual-LCD's.

Unreal - I'm in UK too, I'm thinking about the 2005FPW too. Did you get a REV 005? Wht problems did you have? How much did you pay inc. tax and shipping? Did you manage to get a discount? Sorry about the string of questions!

Cheers

I just hooked mine up 5 minutes ago and this thing kicks ass comppared to my old 17" crt. But is there anyway to make movies go full screen?

Also, what is the usb for?

The usb is for the USB hub on the side of the monitor.

The USB cable supplied supports the two USB2.0 ports on the back, and the other two on the side. One weird thing though, is that in the box of the replacement monitor, they gave me two DVI cables instead of a DVI cable and USB hub-thingy cable.

For different resolutions, you can change the way it displays things on the LCD. There are three modes you can find on the OSD, 1:1 ( no stretching or anything), Fill, and Aspect - maybe that can help you fill up the most of your LCD..... maybe.

for the post concerning UK versions... i got January and February built screens, both REV A01. They are both assembled in the UK too. I have hardly any problems with them at all, if anything though its the backlight leakage. I am being honest here, i dont ever notice it at all, only when im in the POST or loading Steam-based game, such as when i join a sever on CSS. HOWEVER i also stumbled across another problem today, and it seems to happen only to this LCD im using now (Feb model), but not the other one. When i use the side USB-Ports, there is some HUGE noise after 5 minutes that come out from around the centre of the LCD (internally) which sounds like the sort of background 'hiss' you sometimes get on speakers. It was incredibly loud though - so i switched AC kettle plugs (i was using the one supplied with it) with another used on the computer downstairs, and it went. However I used the USB2 ports again, and it decided to do it again. Unplugging the USB device(s) doesnt fix the problem, you have to leave it off for about a minute. Im scared whether it's a heat-related problem, since it only seems to occur when the monitor has been on for a few hours.

LOL apart from that, its perfectly fine, and im never going back to CRT again. I switched from an CRT 19", to this and I have to say, Im never going back, even if they gave me some 22" CRT for free. Gaming is superb, the size makes my tiny room seem much larger, and it looks totally cool. Everyone who has seen it has went WOW :p

Feel free to ask anything else....

Just recieved mine. FEB REV A01. 3 Dead pixels that I can see. Luckly they are on the edge of the screen.

Backlight
Thought I had a perfect LCD, but within the hour the leaking shows which pretty much means its a heat issue. Mine is mostly near the top. I noticed its very warm to the thouch where the black light leakage occurs. I'm pretty sure if you can keep your room cold you will see less BL. I noticed on the other LCDs the power supply is seperate on the power cable...Maybe the integrated PS cuase the dam heat?

My room temp if you guys want to compare.

~78F with moderate black light only at the top.

Gaming
Only played cs1.6 so far. I dont think 1.6 supports widescreen so i only played in 800x600. Theres a wierd delay when playing. No ghosting but alot slower than my CRT thats for sure. I had to turn up my sensitivity from 1.6 to 2.3 in cs 1.6. Not going to do anymore testing till my new amd rig comes this week.

semi conclusion
Overall im some what satisfied. Im more concerned about gameing than the black light but I can only test one game so i cant draw conclusions right now. I think this LCD puts out more heat than my 17inch Sony trini tube lol
Oh yea powerstrip is a great tool! I can control brightness by holding down crt&alt +/-

Thanks for the info., Unreal. I'm considering getting one of these and your posts have been a big help.

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid and where you got yours from?

Thnx.

I've setup three of these displays and own one myself. I can say that after a month of use the backlight issues have faded on all three. Two of them are essentially on for at least 8 hours a day every day. Mine is probably on for 4-6 hours a day. I think that after time the uneveness around the edges of the panel slowly starts to even out. It's kind of like those clear plastic floor mats. At first the mat is probably really warped from being rolled up or folded and won't rest evenly on the ground no matter what you do, then after time it gradually becomes completely flat, having it in a warmer environment would accelerate the process.

If you have bad bleeding and you can't stand it (i.e you're about to send it back), try the procedure where you leave it face down on a flat surface overnight, but instead keep it on all night (plugged in, no power saving mode). My guess is that by doing so (and thus keeping it warm continuously) the bleeding will be very much reduced in the morning.

I've got a Feb A01 with no dead pixels and no ghosting (that I've noticed). It has some backlighting issues that seem paltry compared to some of what I've seen in people's pics. I might take a picture so you can judge for yourself but it seems like its a keeper.

Well, I'll try the [email protected] for my request and see what happens. My main issues is the lower left corner has leakage, so it's a little washed out down there, and there's 1 stuck pixel that annoys me. There are a few other stuck pixels, but those I have to hunt for on a black screen to find, so those are no biggie. Other than that, I love the display.

Just got mine, Feb Rev A01. No dead pixels and very minor (IMHO) backlight bleeding, doesn't bother me at all. Here's a screen

picture

Overall I'm pleased, now I just gotta sell my 19" AG Neovo.
