holy crap, world's highest resolution display. I wonder if it will be 60Hz capable and really third quarter this year? Seems like DP bandwidth is going to be a problem for 60hz even with dp 1.2

^ yes, it will need 2x DisplayPort 1.2 to function at full res/refresh

They said Q4 (Oct - Dec) this year.

Yeah MST isn't even enough. It will require two separate cables.

One DP 1.3 cable with compression would definitely work. Not sure without compression.

That is insane. RIP windows scaling. 27 inches is just insanely small for that rez.

Why not? For an office its a huge space saver.

Also, this means retina iMac. Yay.

This. I am running a Dell 24" 4K monitor and if I could swing it + the horsepower required, I'd go for this 27" 5K version in a heartbeat.

Is there any indication if Windows 9 will do anything to make displays like this usable? We finally get some display resolution progress and it's the OS that's holding things back.

Too small. If they double the size (at least) I'd be VERY interested!

27" is too small for 5K IMHO. This monitor should've been 34" at the minimum.

As others mentioned, 27" is too small and is a waste at 5K, let alone 4k". I would like to see 5K at 55" or bigger would be perfect.

Office and using monitor integrated speakers instead of headphones/headsets? Let them try, right.

And yes, yet another weird abomination with too many drawbacks to make it popular product, not worth becoming anything but tech preview at exhibitions. And by far not highest res display either (or 8K experiments in japan doesn't count anymore?).

Uncompressed at this resolution and 60Hz with 8-bit color would be 26.4 Gbps, so DP 1.3 could handle it.

This would make an awesome photo display - like those digital picture frames, but with museum/art-gallery quality!

Four times the resolution of something like the ROG Swift.

Definitely buying this when I get back from the 'stan!

Gonna require 4-way top of the line SLI/X-fire with the future GPU's (hopefully that have more than 4GB VRAM as that aint gonna cut it).

Yes, or it wouldn't require 2x DP 1.2.

Wow 5k......My god I would LOVE one of these. hmmm DP 1.2 is required too.....interesting.

Might have to give this monitor a try, Although I dont think 2 7990's will be able to max out BF4 with AA. 3gb ain't going to cut it.

Your not going to need any AA with 218 PPI.

Hmmm good point. Not sure about the $2500 price tag, but understandable since there is no other monitor with that high of resolution.

IMO, the best thing about seeing this monitor is the feeling that we're finally going to see some major technical advancement in screens and the tech to connect to them (e.g. DP 1.3 will need to come soon to match these monitors).

For such a long time displays completely stagnated. The last two years have been quite astonishing in comparison to being stuck (seemingly forever) at 16:9 1080P.

Hopefully all of this drives down the price of good sized (27 inches +) 4K screens with good viewing angles. Can't wait to see one under $1K that comes with a solid warranty (e.g. Dell Ultrasharp).

Well obviously you will need to using scaling just like on any high resolution display. When you do it looks gorgeous. Text on my 24" 4K looks like high-end magazine text, zero text aliasing and super clear. This new 5K will be even better.

For a monitor? 55" would hurt your neck.

27-30" is the ideal size for a desktop monitor. The resolution is high because they want to make it similar to the macbook retina displays where you can't see any pixels up close.

Needs to be 32" and glow free like Eizo's 27" 1440p monitors. Don't be surprised if it is not PWM/Flicker free back-light like the 32" 4K monitors.

Can I get this resolution in a bigger size? I have 4x30" monitors and would love to replace it all with a huge screen.

Do you game specifically on the 24inch dell? Just curious on how bad the input lag is since its an MST monitor.

No problem for me. Similar PPI to my macbook pro retina and I have no problem reading text off that when running X-windows at 75 DPI which is smaller fonts than windows 96 DPI default. Some of us actually have decent vision.

I have for many years used a VP2290b or T221 (204 PPI) at native 3840x2400 (22.2 inches) for lots of years without issue. So did my sister and she now uses a 24 inch dell 4k display at the native resolution without scaling with no issues either.

I feel the increase in desktop real-estate far outweighs the pretty fonts.

No not really, still use the 3x Eizo FG2421 setup for that.

The Dell UP2414Q has a Game mode preset. In the UP2414Q thread, I mentioned a workaround to get game mode response times in other modes - it works on my revision A00 monitor anyways. There is a simple test to check if it is working - have a 2nd monitor with known low input lag and move a window between the two monitors and move it around. The input lag is obvious if the game mode is not engaged.

This sounds.. so awesome. But after dealing with the annoyingness of a UP2414Q I'll sit and wait (and cry) until they offer one with single stream transport and no chopped display weirdness.. not like my GPUs could keep up for games anyway :p
