Dead Island (Perspectives)

The fuck did I just read?????

I bought DI when it was on sale like 2 days ago. Buddy and I are having some great fun :)

It does piss me off how fast melee weapons degrade though. Kinda makes having to go back to the base to repair a chore, especially if you're far out without a fast travel =/

Once you get purple and orange weapons and you invest some points into weapon durability the weapons last much longer.

Good to see there are others who actually enjoy the game and what it offers. It's some seriously great fucking fun.

Weapon degradation is rougher in co-op, just like zombies are harder. Can get a little frustrating, but...

Once you get purple and orange weapons and you invest some points into weapon durability the weapons last much longer.

...exactly. Better weapons, upgrade 'em, and it definitely gets better, though still a little rougher with the degradation.

Honestly, DI was given a bum rap, IMO. Yeah, when it was first released, it was a bug-ridden piece of shit port.

However, at this point, it has a lot of great aspects to it, from the visceral and detailed gore and bodily dismemberment (which just never gets old; stripping away of layers of flesh and bone, limbs flying every which way... gruesome and satisfying), to decently varied environments which are fun to explore, visuals are good, good lighting, atmosphere, decent effects, some of the best zombie animation I've seen (though character animation is laughable, ironic), voice acting is actually not bad, a skill tree system/mechanic that's actually not too bad and, most importantly, the game is just a fucking blast to play.

Sure, it's all fetch quests, but it doesn't matter when the game is enjoyable, which DI definitely is.

That's why I started this thread and wrote what I did, which some rather small-minded, sarcastic people did not understand. It's not that it's "some fantastic, award winning game"; it's that it was bashed so fucking hard as being complete garbage as a whole, and in actuality, it's a good fucking game and a hell of a lot of fun.

My wife and I have been addicted to it for days now, after having once shunned it like the plague. Definitely an underrated game, IMO, and glad to see others also see the worth/qualities of it and are enjoying it.

Damnit how did all the sales for this end over the weekend!? Back up to 20 bucks? rubbish.

Ya, where the hell were you man?!

I bought it for $9 and change on friday I think? The next day, it went down to $6 and change, pretty wild. Wish I waited one day since we didn't play it really until yesterday, but what's $3 I suppose.

If anyone has money problems in this game, I suggest doing the arena once or twice, I got $160k playing the arena twice with another person. Due to that $160k I have 1 legendary and 2 purple blunt melee weapons modded with electricity, there is something really entertaining about having enemies get blasted back 20 feet lol.

Stoned and drunk, damnit. Figured i'd just buy it today, but i should have taken the time over the weekend :(

Guess i can wait until the next sale, but this sounds like it would have made for a perfect co-op rpg, which are severely lacking in quantity.

Can't agree with that sentiment enough.

Lol stoned and drunk.

Play with one or two buddies, makes it better. Pending your buddies aren't the kind that run around driving the trucks up and down the staircases and into houses instead of doing the quests.

How is it as a single player experience? I have the game in Steam and played a few hours at launch but the bugs killed it for me. This thread has me interested in trying it out again...

The OP obviously didn't play it on launch day. Dealing with that was enough to turn a lot of us early adopters into haters.

I think the main thing they failed on was the gun mechanic. You never had enough ammo, and the guns weren't that great in the first place. Plus, there was that character who was a "gun specialist" but you just end up using throwing weapons most of the time anyway...might as well just always be the throwing guy.

I think the lack of ammo was by design. The expansion was supposed to allow for more gun play.

Yeah, that's the only really borked thing in the game, more the aiming/gunplay than anything, but it's really no big deal since the game is really all about the melee. Aiming is a pain in the ass though, but the hell with it... the rest is great enough that it doesn't even bother me.

I actually enjoyed the game quite a bit. A little glitchy, but overall a pretty fun game.

Glad to hear it, as it really is a blast.. far more than I thought it would be, so I'm glad I finally checked it out, and I'll be snagging the "Riptide" DLC coming in April, I believe. New areas, weather, vehicles and landmines (which should be in now, but seem glitched). Zombie limbs even more akimbo, lol, cant friggin' wait.

Did they ever fix the god forsaken head Bob and fov with this game otherwise the OP wasted 30 minutes of his life typing this post because the game was more or less like a group of monkeys smeared their shit over a piece of paper and called it a game.

Never tried the expansion, and I know you weren't supposed to have a TON of ammo, but the problem was the guns weren't good enough to warrant even bothering trying to find ammo or wasting inventory space on guns. Couple that with the rarity of ammo and you were better off never even using guns.

I think the last time I played this I used a trainer for unlimited ammo and more weapon durability...the game was about 10x more fun.

I picked it up for $5, and was worth the price! :) Its not bad, and coming into it late in the game, I didnt have all the bugs everyone else had, HAH!

I didn't even care about trying to use guns seriously. They were useful for normal humans with guns though. Zombies... slash, bash, and smash

I haven't played this recently, but did they ever fix the issue where thrown weapons would sometimes just disappear into the ground? It was a huge problem if you had some awesome upgraded purples or oranges and they would just vanish for no reason.

dead island is a shitty eastern european game that despite itself is one of the best games of the year. dead island is also one of the best coop games of the year.

awesome game.

Fully agree. It's a buggy mess is many ways but the gameplay and co-op make up for it SO WELL.

Its obvious that the developer is still boneheaded though thanks to the recent pics of the special mutilated bikini corpse bundle they planned to release in Europe.

I hope Riptide is as fun but also much less buggy.

Completely disagree. Once you get a ammo blue print you can easily make tons of ammo for cheap by simply buying tons of the supplies needed (bleach and scrap metal?). The only problem i had was that you couldn't hold that much ammo.

Oddly, but thankfully, I've had absolutely no bugs in the game at all. Not one.

I do think Riptide is going to be a blast, pun also intended for the addition of landmines. Actually, they were already supposed to be included, but the guy who makes them in Moresby city only ever gives you grenades. But the landmines are a feature in Riptide, so that should be a blast, again, pun intended.

Limbs already flying everywhere from sharp weapons is just... great. But using landmines should be insanely gory fun.

As for ammo/guns, they're pointless in this game, as the aiming/gunplay is horrid, and the game is really about the melee anyway.

I'm actually surprised to see so many people into DI in this thread, especially given that I started the thread based on the premise that this game received so much hate and actually is a damn good, fun game. My wife and I have been playing it non-stop for two weeks.

ook.. now its becoming kinda awesome? like really really really great? omg! whats going on? i'm hooked! so far no bugs, zero, six to eight hours of gameplay.

@MavericK96: i throwed all kinds of things in those fucking zombies, nothing disappeared so far but i didnt played that much...yet! :D

I love Dead Island, feels satisfying to actually hit zombies over the head or cut their limbs off. The only gave that actually makes me WANT to kill zombies. Most games it's all about shooting them in the head and running to avoid them but Dead Island is completely different. Great coop game but the story doesn't hold my attention which is why I rarely play singleplayer. Just too much fun playing with friends.

heh, and i was expecting to uninstall the game in two to four hours of play and deeply regret that i got this game, what a surprise lol

I consider Dead Island to be a terrible but enjoyable game. It's not a good game, but it's lots of fun. For those who don't understand what I mean, it's similar to an awful movie that is highly entertaining. Quality != enjoyability.

Exactly. It's a strange mix.

it gets old pretty fast but it's still enjoyable!

What the f*** did I just read?

I 2nd that... lol!

It's great that people are getting into what I feel was a seriously underrated game, but that post... my brain hurts, lol

lol, we're not writing an article for nature.com here bro, we're talking about the dead island game, it can't get any more dumb than this. this is cheap entertainment, just for fun. if you think it's something else, well...

anyway, if you found THAT difficult to understand, here goes the "translating for dummies" version: me likes...kitchen knife! me found...hotel difficult!

there you go. ;)

Lol, a heavy weapon with shock mod is awesome when it procs.

My buddy and I have been playing this pretty much nightly, for 5-6 hours on average a night (up until 4AM Saturday night). Can't get enough of this for some reason. It helps that he and I take it slow and really take in the atmosphere, it's pretty great. I have to say, this game blew donkey ass when it came out, but now it's just a damn good zombie game.

Best parts are when you're trying to get across town and there's hordes of dead around every corner, and you tag them all as they chase you across the city, then your stamina runs out, and that crazy Kenyan zombie bitch smacks you to oblivion from behind. Pretty suspensful.

I just wish they made it so you could take out the zombies' legs and make them crawl after you...you can disable their arms but not really their legs for some reason.

Also, I hear the analog combat is pretty cool if you are using a controller.
