the developer stated that the game is only around 20 hours (including side missions)...seems really short especially compared to something like the Dying Light games (which DI2 will inevitably be compared to)

Yeah, certainly not open world. At least (I hope) it wont have a bunch on redundant filler like a lot of open / semi-open world games. Will probably be fun for a one-and-done playthrough but probably when it's on sale.

I find shorter games with less junk content are more replayable. I am simply more likely to replay them due to both time and interest. Open world games tend to get very repetitive at parts, which makes me less likely to replay them.

To quote the devs, that might not include all of the side content:

"So we estimate that a single character to play through the [critical] path and engage in a selection of side content, around 20 hours," Duckett said of the length of Dead Island 2. "Again, that was a design choice for us. We understand that people want to do things outside of games so we wanted to really focus on making that experience as enjoyable as possible."

So 20 or more hours. Not that short really.
