Dead Island 2

the developer stated that the game is only around 20 hours (including side missions)...seems really short especially compared to something like the Dying Light games (which DI2 will inevitably be compared to)

Yeah, certainly not open world. At least (I hope) it wont have a bunch on redundant filler like a lot of open / semi-open world games. Will probably be fun for a one-and-done playthrough but probably when it's on sale.

I find shorter games with less junk content are more replayable. I am simply more likely to replay them due to both time and interest. Open world games tend to get very repetitive at parts, which makes me less likely to replay them.

To quote the devs, that might not include all of the side content:

"So we estimate that a single character to play through the [critical] path and engage in a selection of side content, around 20 hours," Duckett said of the length of Dead Island 2. "Again, that was a design choice for us. We understand that people want to do things outside of games so we wanted to really focus on making that experience as enjoyable as possible."

So 20 or more hours. Not that short really.

Epic exclusive...blah. Still pretty excited to check this one out. Maybe I will have to load up Epic Launcher.

If you don't want to sign into Google to get around the age gate:

That actually looks pretty fun! I might get this whenever it comes to steam - although I still don’t like the focus on ridiculous looking melee weapons. I didn’t like it in Dead Island or Dying Light either - a far cry from the original “gritty realism” that Techland initially showed in those early 2007/8 previews of the original Dead Island.

meta: thanks for the non-Google link btw.

I got this for free with my GPU, hope it's better than Callisto (snore fest). It looks really fun, graphics looks amazing too.

75 is about what I was expecting...at least it's not a disaster...Dying Light has overtaken Dead Island as the definitive zombie game

I suspected this was going to be the case. Everything about it sounds decidedly average.

another AMD sponsored title?...expect performance issues, especially for Nvidia owners

Wonder if this will be one of the freebies on Epic in a few years, might wait for that or to be dirt cheap. even though i enjoyed the first one.

Pretty good interpretation with lots of combat. I'm not sure that I like the FOV.
I'll probably pick up a GOTY ed in a year or 2.

I remember playing the original Dead Island, and really liking it.

But I loved Dying Light when it released, and believed it to be a vastly better… um, zombie experience. Dying Light 2, for me, improved on the original in every way - and even the atmosphere was thicker.

For some reason, I had assumed that this new Dead Island game was going to be open world (like many of the critics are saying). I have to go into this with lowered expectations then.

That said, I’m at a total loss now, knowing what I’m going to like and not like. I thought that The Last of Us on the PC was going to blow me away, because I hadn’t ever played it - but it felt kind of ordinary to me. Same deal with the RE 4 remake - I was really surprised that I couldn’t get into it.

Anyway, fingers crossed. But I have to say it… Los Angeles is not an island.

WOW this game is in development for a long time it's just on Epic starting tomorrow. I think I tried Dead Island 1 for a few minutes only think I got it for free.

Oh, cripes, this released today? I have this one marked on my calendar for next week. Well… I’m getting it then.

EDIT: So, I’m playing this right now. 9900k/3090/4K.

Early thoughts. I had to lock the game at 60 FPS and set my LG C9 to 60hz, because there was stutter above 60. It’s all good now though. No frame-time issues to speak of.

This game is hugely narrative driven (though I’ve only played for one hour). You’re basically told exactly what to do and where to go - weirdly, this sounds like the sort of thing I’d hate, but it actually works.

The detail in this game, so far, is great, and I hope this continues throughout the game. If these assets just end up being re-cycled throughout then it will be disappointing. You have to go slow though and take everything in - if you’re the type of person who just wants to blast through a level, then this game might not be for you, since you’d be missing out on the artistry of the level design.

Again, I’m only just starting. I hope that all the levels feel unique rather than re-cycled. If so, then this will be a great ‘atmosphere game’, if you get my meaning.

So another early comment (I’m about 2 hours in now). Obviously, The Last of Us and Dead Island 2 are different games - but not in the sense that they’re both zombie games.

I really thought that The Last of Us (first time for me was on the PC) was going to blow me away, but actually, I find the atmosphere in Dead Island 2 to be much richer. The feeling I get in Dead Island 2 is reminiscent of how I felt in the very early days of the pandemic, when there was confusion, when I walked into the grocery store and saw the empty shelves, or like the beautiful sunny day I walked to the coffee shop and the streets were deserted, and along the way I noticed how everyone’s gates were shut - sort of like the zombie apocalypse was upon on us. LOL.

Also, this game doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s not full blown comedy, but it leans that way - yet the feeling of a zombie apocalypse is very much there. They’ve struck a nice balance.

As far as the world is concerned, man (at least early on) the developer has really focused on detail. Also, for what it’s worth: no question about it, ray tracing is the future, but screen-space reflections are still pretty damned good when done properly.

This video pretty much sums up my experience after 3 hours.

Edit: And after another two hours of playing, there’s not much I can add to what this person said in the video above, other than how surprisingly good this game is.

It’s just so weird, because I’m now in a frame of mind in which I can tell that a game is really good, but for whatever reason I’ll have no passion or desire to play it. The Last of Us, Hogwarts Legacy, Returnal… I know these are good games… but if I’m not excited when playing them… then their quality just doesn’t matter. At least to me personally. LOL.

I never would have predicted that in 2023, with so many games releasing, Dead Island 2… of all games… would be the one that would really click with me.

Also, I have to say it: what a pleasure to play a game at launch that runs smoothly, without any frame-time issues, and virtually no bugs to speak of. It’s like the developers of this game didn’t read the rule book or something.

This game is really fun and well-polished. The only bug I have seen after about 10 hours of play is that my inventory shows I have a new item but it doesn't. I am guessing this will get fixed in the first post-launch patch as other users on reddit have reported the same issue. There is a short shader compilation at launch and I have not experienced a single stutter. Also, HDR is actually implemented correctly for a change and it looks really good on my OLED - no elevated blacks.

Oh my god… LOL… the yellow check on the inventory… you’re right.

I kind of bought this game without too much thought when I saw some information about it's release, so I'm kind of doing in with no expectations. I was craving a zombie slasher and I would say this game delivers so far.

I haven't seen any bugs yet and the gameplay has been buttery smooth 110-130 FPS or more at 4k on my RTX 4090. I left the AMD specific features disabled, since I don't really have a need for FSR or whatever else in this game.

So far I am finding it enjoyable. I have played Dying Light 1 & 2 and, I would say they are a bit more open sandbox style game. This game seems a little more on rails, guiding you along which honestly I'm fine with. It still seems fun, just a different style. Kind of fits that whole desire to have a game to jump into for a few minutes and slash zombies without having to think too much. :)

I haven't looked at the multiplayer. That realely interests me in these types of games. I saved my money and just bought the base game as well. I think the excitement will be over once I am finished the main game and probably the expansions will have more to do with multiplayer I'm guessing...

Going to have to pick this up for this weekend. Sounds fun.

Game looks great, plays very well, HDR is top notch. Long time since I played a game thinking maybe an hour and end up playing over 8 hours straight, not even aware of the time with a slightly irritated wife waking up with me hacking away 😁.

Does feel like Dead Island 1 in ways, ability to take the high ground as in a truck and play wack-of-mo. By Far the best damage/flesh system. As you slash, plummet, pound, burn the zombies they deteriorates to mush if you want.

4k, HDR, native with TAA, getting over 110fpm, max setting, no motion blur. Game has max fpm 120 option and was getting some screen tearing with FreeSync. Using AMD Chill and now perfectly smooth, very steady fps. Two crashes on in-between loading screens.

Best game for me this year.

[H] bros recommendation and reports of buttery smooth gameplay on day one? Well that's it, I'm in. Downloading now! I believe in supporting proper PC releases. They are rare and precious gems these days.

Keep in mind that you might have to lock in at a certain frequency. I had micro-stutter until I locked in at 60hz.

This game doesn’t need to be run at a high frequency though. It’s not that type of game.

My only other advice would be to explore the world and look at things. The detail is terrific (the ‘influencer’ house, for example).

I wish this launched on Steam I have a tendency not to play Epic games just because of the launcher.
