Counter Strike: Global Offensive

I'm excited... but the fact that it's on the Source graphics engine  7 years for an expansion on the same graphics engine? kidding me right Valve? No? Oh...I hope the game engine is redone from the ground up (hint: DX11, tessellation, more realistic shadows, better fog from smoke bombs, HD skys etc.)

It won't, they are targeting it to console users. This should destroy all CS ever should have been! (A precision game on an XBOX controller? :D HAHA Holy Moly derp derp! Valve has become such a money grabbing d-bag sellout company. Hopefully they will use that money on PC games in 2013, 2014, maybe by 2020?

I wish they would add DX 11 features/options for TF2 like tessellation and ultra textures. But they made the game f2p so I'd say its dead. (but i do like the fuller servers for this moment in time.) Oh well I guess running a 260GTX and getting 90-150fps on average is good for my wallet  PC Gaming is definitely not what it used to be, cutting edge.

Valve should be spending money on a new graphics engine to be developed, I hope they are...

id Rage iz dedicated to the console market
Crysis 1 can't run on consoles -> yet Crysis 2 can!
CSS -> CS GO = Same graphics engine stuck in a 8 year time vacuum upon release
Oblivion DX9 06 -> SKYRIM DX9 11...5 years later mostly same engine, but this game I think will be done right and DX9 is a smart move for Todd Howard and CO.

BF3 is DX 11. Which is like a frigging miracle for FPS fans who enjoy better graphics.

Such a strange future for PC gamers...

So basically this person should have not went because it would have been more important that a 1.6 Pro went?

The 1.6 Players wanted 1.6 players to go cause they want this game to be like 1.6. Just because you play 1.6 doesnt make it a superior game. If you want 1.6 then keep playing it.
I want a Counter Strike game thats not 1.6 or Source but still has that Counter Strike feel.

CGS dying didnt kill Source either. CGS died because of very poor management.

CGS killed 1.6 in NA. The best NA 1.6 players switched for the money, and the scene was gone when CGS died. Basically only EG kept playing, because they had international competitions to compete for.

Torbull is an ok choice to bring in, but he was never a great player. VALVe should've brought in both 1.6 and Source players. The claim that Source players make for better judges because they've played both games is laughable. They're better judges for games that play like Source. And if that's the feel VALVe wants to recreate, as the previous poster said, then the game simply won't be popular and won't be played within the competitive scene.

Torbull was brought in because he owns ESEA which is really the only thriving NA League.

I am pretty sure people are going to be mad about changes. Every game valve has updated had changes and the old players hated them. But they had to change otherwise ehy buy it? Old stubborn players always want the same thing, same game with more players and leagues / servers. But they say same game new graphics. .
Also the source engine is not 7 years old it has had several updates, most notably orange box. All engines incrementally update the same way. Not saying the engine is cutting edge but 7 years old is wrong.

The biggest changes to the source engine have been the implementation of HDR and multi-core support and other than that and sharper textures in new games it's the same shit. It still has a lot of the same problems too like shadows and decals going through walls. I honestly don't think we will see a new game engine from Valve, it's just not as profitable for them.

Hope this is good. Would love a new CS game. Source is great but I cant play it for more then 10minutes before I quit.

cause people only ever want to play dust2 and office.. gets boring real fast...

i can see this new game being as source was to 1.6, source will be around for sometime before people move to this because of too large of changes.

I loved CS and put in nearly 1000 hours over the years. But this just doesn't sound like a big deal. A graphically updated CS:S with some molotovs is all I'm getting so far. And on the Source engine. I hope it's a better iteration of the engine than the one they released CS:S on, that was a fidgety pain in the dick.

Still, modding will be supported, hopefully. If it doesn't clash with their micro-transaction models, anyway.

But no iron sights? In this day and age? That's the single biggest positive trend in first-person shooters.

I'm pretty solidly in the camp that if you add iron sights it's just not CS anymore. I'd rather see lean or prone come in than aiming down the sight.

The biggest engine improvement I'm hoping for is better physics interactions, although I'd just as soon guess they'd take the Portal 2 route and just have a lot less physics enabled objects. The way the player interacted with the filing cabinets on office was awful.

If there is one thing I hope they take away from modern FPS games, it's iron sights and weapon customization. Every gun should be capable of using a scope, silencer, etc.

Marek ".PhP" Kadek is one of the players in seattle. This is what he wrote on Playzone.cz :
- this game is not going to replace CS 1.6, or CS:S, it is primary made for consoles, PC version is just kind of a "bonus"
- at the moment, the game looks more like HL2DM
- There is no recoil and there will never be. (because of the consoles)
- the game runs on L4D2 engine
- SourceTV is NOT a priority
- they are working on match making system
- new money system
- no kevlar (this should be fixed in the future)
- maps are simplyfied for XBOX style, less ways, most fights are close range
- Hidden Path (Valve only finances the game) is trying to make all weapons balanced.

Valve is going to continue updating CS:S, and today they will also talk with the players about the future of CS:S...

Counter strike for the consoles...

i think the issue with counter strike is that its never really been about the graphics, its about the playstyle and the balance, etc. I still play Source every now and then and i don't play for long, but i realize that it's because i'm missing a key element to the reason i used to play for hours on end: a group of friends on a familiar server to play with.

the game doesn't need anything new, really. its got good mechanics, good balance, good enough graphics, etc. its like playing poker: you don't really need to change anything...

I'm pretty impressed that CS is still one of the top games on Steam 12 years after its initial release, but one thing has me puzzled...

Code:
63,452	67,082 Team Fortress 2
50,153	55,238 Counter-Strike
48,662	53,007 Counter-Strike: Source
26,191	28,796 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
23,722	27,158 Football Manager 2011
22,381	25,750 Terraria
20,195	20,195 Sid Meier's Civilization V
19,123	20,052 Call of Duty Black Ops - Multiplayer
12,489	12,489 Left 4 Dead 2
10,068	11,151 Fallout New Vegas

Why on earth is the original Counter-Strike beating CS:S?

Who are these people that still play the original? I mean, CS:S is - for all intents and purposes - graphically obsolete. The original is pretty much stone age at this point.

I tried playing through the original Half Life a few months back for old times sake. I just couldn't do it. It looked so bad compared to what I've become used to, that I shut it off after 15 minutes.

Other observations:
  • TF2 shot to the top because of it becoming free to play
  • People still play CoD MW2, despite there being two games in the series following it, and it being universally rejected as a bd game ruining the original when it first came out?
  • Those crazy europeans and south americans sure do love their soccer. That must explain Football Manager 2011
  • Terraria: Never heard of it, is it any good?
  • Civ 5: its a pretty good game. I think Civ 4 was better though.
  • Black Ops. Not my type of game, but its popular on the console so I guess there must be some spillover to the PC.
  • Left 4 Dead 2. I never played this franchise. Worth $19.99 on steam?
  • Fallout New Vegas: Must have been because of the recent Quake con sale where it sold for $10 and Fallout 3 sold for $6.75. I got both, but they are so unbelievably buggy that I can barely play them.

People play 1.6 still because it's one of the last vestiges of the era of true PC gaming. It's one of the last games where graphics did not come before gameplay, where things like the quality of netcode and the feel of the weapons, map design and game balance were the paramount design issues. Quake Live has thousands of players for the exact same reasons.

It's simply a better game, not graphics simulator, than anything else offered today.

They way it sounds, it's extremely dumbed down. One of the players that they invited out there was saying that there's no recoil, no kevlar, smaller maps, matchmaking, etc. They even went as far to say that it feels like HL2DM, not CS.

No Fucking Thank You Valve. Valve is starting turn into a cash whore. Just when we get our hopes up that they'll release something that the community is actually asking for, they fuck it up and dumb it down. Valve used to be my favorite dev, but lately they've just been putting out cash cow titles that no one really asked for instead of the games that people want. I'm pretty sure I'm done buying anything from them until episode 3, so I'm probably just done buying anything from them.

I wished more games focused on netcode and weapon feel over graphics or consolization. Miss that era.

to me, its not something to get too upset about. they're not getting rid of the old game, and it seems like they want to make a quick buck off us console games. not that i'll be buying this, but i think the core CS fans will stick with CS:S and 1.6 and this will just give something for other people to buy...

To me, it's something to be upset about as they are wasting time and money that could be used to make an actual game, not some quickly scrapped together console crap. For the past few years they've been putting out games that no one asked for while completely neglecting the games that people were demanding (I'm not sayng L4D and Portal were terrible, just not what people were asking for).

Finally, we get something that we've been asking for, and it's this dumbed down console shit. Fuck that. Like I said, I'm not buying a damn thing from valve until Episode 3, so I'm probably just done buying shit from Valve.

I used to have tons of respect for Valve, but it's slowly fading to nothing.

i mean, i'm always talking with my friends about what could make the games i play better. and we're talking about games with high and low production value, good games and bad. i never seem to bring up CS:S. the only complaints i ever had were with the people who played and the servers i played on. its a game that's built perfectly for the gamers who play it. i don't really see them making any changes until a drastically new engine comes out. even the move from 1.6 to source (when the game was already how many years old?) was met with criticism.

what i mean to say is what can they really improve? they already upgraded it once onto the source code and AFAIK there are still plenty of people playing 1.6. upgrading again is pointless. now they're just using the CS:S name to make some more money, and i find i can't blame them because it's not like a console, where a new version will pull all the old players away.

I agree completely, which is why I'm pissed that they're even wasting their time and money with this game. I'd rather have nothing, and have the time/money go towards a better game.

That's what a lot of people want.
Simply a better looking Counter-Strike.

But CS:GO will also make the game more friendly to new players with matchmaking, it'll likely have microtransactions to make Valve more money (things like custom outfits), and new game modes (I think there might be capture the point and capture the flag, going by leaked files a couple years ago).

The gameplay will also be different! While the core aspects will remain, balance will be changed -- damage, recoil, pricing, etc. will be different. CS:GO will definitely not be a clone of CS:S or 1.6, it will be its own game.

And I hope they come out with updated mod tools.

I don't understand these posts.

"They're not making the game I want! FUCK THEM"

This is why smart developers don't listen to their (usually dumb) fanbase.

wow no recoil? Is that in the"Bonus" PC version to? Didnt CS on xbox even have fucking recoil. Hell that game was kinda fun, put alot of hours into it..

Are there even any modern alternatives to CS now as far as real, skill based online FPS goes?

What? Where did you hear no recoil?
From what I've read, recoil atm is random, but they're going to change it so that it's more predictable (like recoil in 1.6 and Source). The game is still in alpha and is being released next year. They have lots of time to change things.

See my post on the last page, and it doesn't look likely that it will change.

You know, even though Alliance of Valiant arms is f2p it reminds me a great deal of CS. It's got some issues like guns seeming to have smaller spread when fired from the hip rather than using aimed fire, and the f2p problem of some people spending real money to buy virtual guns, but the core gameplay is tight and responsive and rewarding.

AMEN! Its Valve. They havent let us down yet. So I will gladly be purchasing this game. Thank you valve! you might even get some Micro transactions from me! (Which are optional btw)

On the contrary, Valve have continually let down (or completely shat on, depending on who you ask) the competitive community with 1.6, CZ, and CS:S. This game is supposed to have a focus on the competitive e-sports scene, so it remains to be seen if they can pull it off.

I've been reading the same from the ESEA post and the IAMA by 3k2 (summary here)

Just great, this game is made for consoles and the PC version will be a shitty console port. Valve has officially abandoned the PC community and that sucks.

It's about time more people started realising this.

I'm not really sure why people thought Valve were so pro-PC in the first place...every Valve game has been multiplatform. I'm expecting DOTA2 to end up on consoles at some point too...it's not like tower-defense games are exclusive to PC.
