Computer Abuse, what ticks u off?

Food on ANY of my electronics. I see my friend take out his PS2, we play for a while, then he pulls out a big bag of chips and some dip. Proceeding to take multiple handfulls of chips then play with the PS2 controller. I would have slapped him in the face if it was on my Xbox.

 2 funny

Things that irk me? Oh, HUGE list comin on!

1. Crap in the keyboard.
2. No Antivirus installed
3. No hardware or software firewall.
4. Tons of tangled wires coming out the back.
5. Messy computer desks.

Oh screw it, there's too damn much.

not computer related, but because I worked at Best Buy I have a ton of these:

-A customer thought (and was convinced) that hooking up all cables (composite, s-video, component, HDMI, optical and S/PDIF) would give him the BEST quality in audio and video

-A customer pushed a Pioneer Elite to look behind it. It was mere centimeters from crashing down off of its stand. Then the customer left it like that.

EDIT: And this one time I subbed in the computer dept.

Me: "How are you sir" (Sir being a 22 year old jerk)
Him: "Sup'
Me: "Can I help you with anything?"
Him: "I'd like to buy this laptop" (Laptop was a 500 dollar Toshiba, pretty good deal)
Me: "Aright"

---Everything gets done--- I could tell at this point that he was getting a little antsy, I truly didn't care cause it was almost paid for

Him: "Can I have a knife?"
Me: Sure, what for?
Him: I want to open
Me: Aight

Him: Thanks
-Opens box takes out laptop, examines it then THROWS IT IN THE AIR. It flies for a bit and lands and hits a 4 y/o little girl on the head.
Me: (REALLY LOUD) WTF?!!?

He runs at this point and my friend grabs him and pushes him down. Finally, his 'posse' shows and pushes my friend. The first kid stands up and I punch him in the stomach, more or less incapacitating him while I help my friend take care of the the other four punks. A few of my other coworkers get involved and subdue them all.

The kid then laughs saying that he just destroyed our product, and there's nothing he can do about it. I then realize throughout this whole debacle, I still had his credit card, so I whip that out and say "No, I think it was your product"

After police were called, we find out that the kid was dared by his friends to destroy a laptop. But because he was so nervous, he BOUGHT the laptop first.

what a bitch, did the parents of the kid sue him? i mean seriously, and anyways how did u not get noticed? i mean i would think security and stuff would be all over those guys.... and 2 hit a 4 year old in the head with a computer.... what an ass whipe.... anyways, ive said enough

Not really abuse but real stupid. One of our clients has 4 remote offices and we don't see the pcs out of them unless something breaks. Most of the branches only have a pc or 2 so this isn't an issue(they use thin clients running xpe). Anyway the company that manages a citrix enviroment for them put the pcs on a domain without telling us(they are not suspose to touch these). I get one in friday that has a bad logic board. Get the board from hp monday and installed it a few minutes ago. Don't know the domain password so I just reset the local admin password that the other company changed without telling me. Those fuckers put this on their domain maybe a month ago and didn't bother to upgrade it to sp2. WTF? They took the time to remove the av that was on it and upgrade that to Mcafee enterprise yet didn't upgrade windows to sp2? Makes no sence to me. Hell they could have gotten another hour or so labor for it(over 100 bucks for them going out to this branch an hour). Makes no sence to me. Hell I know we have some notebooks they use to work on trucks and stuff that only have sp1 but they never get on the internet. Besides when I get my hands on them I reimage them to our new image. This machine was hand touched by someone that is suspose to know what they are doing.

taking with computer techs who know nothing about computers.

Tech support? Yea I know that feeling.

Man we had a local computer shop build a computer for a client(boss has used them a lot in the past) and the machine was messing up. First issue was a bad optical drive which is easy to miss(wouldn't read all disks but read most). Anyway the thing was running hot and was overheating. I took it to them as it was under warranty and was going to let them fix it(didn't know what other issues it may have). My boss sends me over there to talk with the techs like the next day. Guy has the side of the case off and is like "its running fine but you have a software issue". I look at him and am like ok I left a note with it saying it was overheating. Running it with the side off could remove that issue. Run it with the side on and it against the wall. Anyway he shows me the software issue(unit rebooted when you tried to connect with skype). I'm like WTF it wasn't doing that so I look and one of the other techs went into msconfig and noticed they turned almost everything off to try to take software out of the equation. I turn it back on and the skype issue goes away. I just turn and look at the guy. After that I tell them to test the power supply, regrease the cpu, put the side on the case, cover the side vent and let it run overnight at 100% load. I even gave them a copy of BIT to run on it(I have a legit copy). Asshats then tried to charge us for it saying it was a software issue that wasn't covered under warranty. Yea they are glad I wasn't the one that writes the check to them.....

Calling India to get tech support.

While there's nothing inherintly wrong with Indians giving tech support, 9 times out of 10 with Dell tech support (this is me just fixing Dell's, I didn't buy them!) it is because I'm pretty sure an RMA is going to be involved. I go through about 4 levels of tech support getting handed off each time to a higher level tech. EACH TIME I get handed off I have to go through the entire what's your name, address, phone number, rank, serial number, first born's SS number, etc. for 5 minutes before we start over at the BEGINING of the entire tech issue. Frustrating as hell!

Oh, and anything to do with people with Qwest DSL. Bunch of goddam idiots running things there, been that way for at least 8 years.

I just remember something about incompetent computer techs. Last year, my roommate brought his computer parts (Athlon 64, Gigabyte mb and some pc400 ram). I offered him help to build up is parts together but he preferred to let the store techs handle it. So he brings the stuff back and plug everything up. Get in bios and check the settings... oh my god the CPU is at 75C!! So we shut everything down.

So I figure something's wrong with the heatsink/processor so I open up his case and try to remove the heatsink. I had alot of resistance doing so, it seemed like the heatsink was stuck on the processor! So in a last attempt, I finally pull out the heatsink, WITH THE CPU STILL ON IT! It's there that we finally realise that the guy at the store put termal paste on the CPU like peanut butter on a toast! No wonder why it was so stuck. Of course, we went back to the store, told the guy that he messed up, also talked with the manager about it and they replaced both mb and CPU... I think the guy was fired a few weeks later, never saw him again there...

What ticks me off is when someone's computer fumbles or is running slow so they just start clicking buttons and pressing keys which makes the problem worse.

Chances are it was that Arctic Silver Ceramique stuff. Great for putting on really heavy heatsinks, but a little goes a long way and good luck getting the heatsink off once the stuff settles.

Dude there was thermal paste all over the cpu heatspreader, even some was laying on the motherboard socket (on the plastic at the side of the cpu). We got lucky the thing didn't spread UNDER the cpu or everything would have went boom :p This was clearly an incompetent work.

Finally!! Thanks for bringing this up.. Absolutely drives me nuts. It almost adds a concieded feeling to the post when people do that

I've got a few, most of them related to my experiences here at college...

1. People who are in CS Classes who know NOTHING about computers. Out of my entire Java class, on the first day I was the only one there who knew what RAM, ROM, and CPU stood for. It's no wonder I'm running circles around the rest of them.

2. People who think that their Pentium 4 is better than all of AMD's offerings and all dual-core processors simply because it's clocked higher.

3. People who think that the Geek Squad is, well, legitimate. I once went to a Best Buy and looked at a "Dynex" case that said it came with a 500 watt power supply. I wanted to know whether the PS was ATX 2.0 or not, and since the salesbum said it was against store policy to open it up and take a look I went through asking literally the entire Geek Squad there before they finally just gave up, confused, and said they had no idea.

4. GAME RAGE. I can't even begin to say how annoying it is to hear someone screaming like a lunatic just because they got shot in CS/UT/whatever. Take a deep breath and get over it, it's not the end of the world! I used to have a friend who would scream at the screen and viciously accuse the computer of cheating (like it would ever concede) whenever he'd run into trouble with a game.

5. People who buy the "strategy guides" for games. Why pay for the answers for the challenges you just paid for, especially when you can get the same information for free on the internet if you really need it? I never really understood that.

6. DDers - that is, Discount Dellers. The people who meticulously scan the Dell catalogs until they can find the cheapest, most worthless machine to ever be made and then buy it simply because it's cheap.

Often it is done by non-native americans... and you are just unfairly punishing someone for being a part of a cultural difference. Most of you probably do not realize that when you rail against it. Not *everyone* is an american... even on these forums.

I don't think banning is appropriate at all... because you know... like a little dash and a name effects our lives in such a stark and negative way...

I absolutely cannot fucking stand anybody who uses the phrase "plugging it up".

For crying out loud man, it's "plugging it IN"! IN.

That and people who say they're "downloading" a program from a CD instead of installing it.

I started work with the local Geek Squad a few weeks back, and while these guys are knowledgeable, all of them seem to poke at the screen of an LCD when they are trying to point something out. If someone did that to my monitor, they would be knocked the fook out

I'm aware, but I'm still irked by it. Besides, you don't only "download" the data, you have to install the shit too.

I'm not "native american",
I just don't see the point in doing this, that's all.

I wouldn't walk around with a name tag on my shirt, make a statement, and then close that statement by saying my name....

And I don't think anyone was talking about using your username in your sig, but typing it out at the end of every post is stupid, I don't care what your nationality is...

I absolutely hate that. Loathe it even. It's pretentious and superfluous. If only we could put an end to it.

What the hell are you talkin' about? How does culture have anything to do with repeating one's username? I think your post does more insulting to intelligence than our "railing" them. Stop profiling. All we attacked was the act, not the people.

people double clicking on everything

OMG, this is a big one for me as well. Especially when I have three or four lectures with different professors in a row, and they all like to do it on the projector connected to their computers, and they will go to a hundred different websites in a row, meanwhile double clicking EVERY single link the entire way.. Ah that drives me nuts.

Also:

-The mother I'm dealing with that just laughs about the fact that her son downloaded kazaa, and that night her computer stopped working. I told her that thats because kazaa is almost 100% viruses, and she didnt really seem to care. In fact, her son even had the nerve to ask me (in front of his mother, no less) if I made sure to back up his music when I reformatted it.

This one REALLY, really gets me:

Tiny, local computer stores that sell custom computers to people with parts that are so shitty (like, for example VIA motherboards) and obscure, and then they dont provide a driver CD, so when, for example, a customer brings me that PC and tells me they need me to reformat it because its got a bunch of viruses, and I do so, only to find the drivers for that no name, crappy, motherboard dont exist/have never existed/were never put online. Oh, and I should mention the place that did this with my last customer is now out of business.

I agree with the shitty parts but the motherboard issue isn't that bad anymore. Back in the day when you had a shit load of jumpers on a motherboard it was a huge issue. Still try to stay away from crappy motherboards and powersupplys when I can help it though. Thing with driver cds is 90% of the time the customer just throws them away with other crap. When I use to build machines I use to take a cdr disk(when they were a few bucks a shot) and copy all of the drivers to it and place it on a sleve on the inside of the machine. Saved me time on a few different setups where people lost the disks I "never gave them" because they left them in the box mb box with the other software and threw it out or lost it.

Well right now, that kazaa virus customers computer is down. I've had it for two weeks trying to get it to work, but shit if I can find the drivers for the VIA motherboard. Theres no numbers on it anywhere, it just says VIA, and its at least 6 years old, and it was a discount deal back then, so it could easily be 10 years old. I've tried every possible solution to find drivers for the thing. Windows update errors out every time I try to use it (maybe it doesnt support win 98?), I've tried some radar scan or something program and it didnt find any hardware drivers.. I guess I'm just going to tell the customer I can't fix it.

Helping someone "hook their computer up" in person because they managed to screw up my "each wire only fits in one hole" directions. In case you are wondering, it IS possible to fit a USB wire into an ethernet port.

dude, today i saw my teacher hit the keyboard like a bunch of times and clicked the mouse a bunch of times to have the screen reappear that annoyed me so much. god people with no patience and have no idea with 1 click the monitor will turn on and it doesnt matter how many times you click it. GRRR and when my computer acts like he knows everything he knows about computers when in reality he knows jack shit. he is a mac user........

Yes, fingers on the monitor has to be no.1.
A few others that bug me, in no particuler order...
People who use AOL.

Other then that, they lack support, common drivers, and popularity.

If you go for one of the VIA branded boards that is made by some no name company, what would you expect? If you buy a no name board, that's your fault, not VIAs. Popularity has never been a problem with chipsets, I don't see why you brought it up. FYI, the manufacturer has the drivers on the website, usually, if they don't then they're probably a generic/noname, once again your fault. So the over statement "cheap boards like VIAs" is incorrect.
