Computer Abuse, what ticks u off?

people that touch my LCD.

I had one time just last week, kid went and just blantantly slapped (litterally full hand slap) my screen on my MacBook. I freaked man.

Me: What the fuck are you doing kid? This screen is almost a thousand fucking dollars!

Him: Whoah calm down, its just a computer.

like he expects me to pull a grand out of my ass to repair a screen on my Macbook. I shoulda cut his throat right there, I swear to god I will next time. In fact, I need a sticker for the back of my laptop: Warning, failure to touch laptop without permission may cause serious physical injury and or death.

oh I have another:
I know a kid personally who litterally, just went out and bought a brand new PC, just an awesome gaming PC
C2D 6800
2x 7950GX2
4GB RAM
500GB HDD

etc etc. costs him like 7 grand total when all said and done, and I decide I go over to his house to see what it is like to have rich parents, he has 1 thing installed on the entire computer, guess what it is. World of Warcraft. I almost shat myself. no AV, no Spyware protection, didn't even do the updates for Windows. just WoW.

;-/ 7 grand for a computer just for WoW is insane. That amount of money is a years tuition for me...

a friend of yours? just some random kid? or something in between? the details on this really matters, because I need to know how painfully slow his death should be.

I HATE when websites resize my main browser window. I could mail them a letter bomb. Jackasses.

your warning is basically inviting them to touch the screen, otherwise they'll die if they don't. :p You might just want to say "Warning: Touchgin the laptop without permission... blah blah blah."

all that just for WoW is a wa$te of epic proportions. its like buying an 18-wheeler to pick up groceries. my friend's 3-yr-old dell with 3ghz single core p4, 512mb ram, and geforce fx 5200 run WoW great. so its not just the kid who's retarded, its also his rents for not knowing anything about what he's guna use this pc for before paying $7000 for it.

People who hate on a kid with a 7K computer because he doesn't use it they way they think he should

I posted this in another thread, but it belongs here:

That reminds me, I have a friend who SWEARS that fonts look better on ATi cards then on Nvidia cards. He said they look SO MUCH better that thats why he bought an ATi card. lol!!!

Also, I used to bring my iBook to school all the time. People would literally come up to me and grab it from my hands to play with it. I would get so pissed.

Finally I blew up on somebody for doing that and it never happened again. However, if somebody was to slap my screen, they would get punched in the face ungodly hard. I'm 6'5, about 300 pounds, and I think I would do some pretty decent damage. :p

actually, your friend may be on to something. way back in the days of Windows 3.11, ATi was a large player in the "Windows Accelerator" market. I recall even back then that, yes, fonts and other non-graphical (ie, not part of the GUI) elements looked sharper and cleaner on ATi cards. Matrox was another company who did very well in this particular market.

I don't think it would be a big stretch of the imagination that ATi brought this technology forward and is using it in the modern era.

Since I use my cards for gaming, I'm exclusively an nVidia user these days, but I'd be very interested to take a side-by-side look and compare that aspect of the ATi - nVidia competition.

One more thing I just remembered: people who buy an expensivve 2000dpi mouse just to turn around and use it on 400dpi exclusively.

I just remembered something from looking at the boards.

People who quote people that have posted like 10 pictures, and they dont delete the picture links, so it repeats the same 10 pictures.

God thats so frustrating. It pisses me off to no end.

THen there's those that post pics that are like 4000 pixels wide. that's irritating. There's no reason I should have to side scroll on a 1680x1050 resolution.

I dont mind that as much as having to wait on 6mb download speed because a few stupid n00bs couldnt figure out how to delete some damn links to pictures.

There needs to be a training session before you can use forums, I swear.

people who's parents buy everything for them. I've worked very hard and saved a lot of money to buy the comp in my sig. In fact, im quite satisfied every time i sit down....it feels good to get something for your hard work. pisses me off when someone at school brags that their parents just bought them an alienware.

That's a winner.

Breaking my GD scroll wheel. Wait, maybe THAT's why Logitech implemented that 'hyper-scroll' Micro-gear wheel-majig. And here I was thinking it was some retarded gimmick.

My annoyances:

1. People who think that a higher clock speed on a CPU is better.
Dude, my Intel Pentium D 920 beats the hell out of your Intel Core 2 Duo 6600!!! Who lives with 2.4 GHZ these days!?!

2. People who overclock in a stock setup to like 4-5 Ghz and then scream at me to fix it when it blows. Also, people who think that overclocking is bad, or that you do it by rotating the CPU 90 degrees int eh 478 socket...

3. People who expect to be unique just because their parents bought them an Ipod.

4. People who buy Dell and think that their computer is better than one computer, let's say a VM computer, just because the Dell was more expensive. (Go and read some of Hard OCP's evals, if you want to understand what I am saying.)

5. People who use my computer to log onto porn and their blogs.

6. Myspace.

7. People who tried to upgrade their AMD by buying an Intel CPU and trying to ram it into the socket.

8. People who say Macs are better, simply because they say Windows sucks.

9. People who mess around with my computer while I'm looking away for a minute. You know, there is a reason that there is a Guest account...

10. People who cry that anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are slowing their computer, and they disable them against my advice, then in a day talk to me again and scream about how their compuuter is even slower.

The above post reminded me of something when he mentioned porn.

I had a couple of friends and my 10 year old nephew (Who was playing on my PS2) in my room.

One friend and myself were just talking, then I look at my other friend who's on the computer... on a porn site...

In one of my classes at school today, I had some guy say his dad told him tha the needs a cable for the drive on his video card.... Ever try convincing these people that they're idiots? Of course, to them, I'm the idiot.

I love (hate) seeing people's posted pics that they scanned, only they didn't crop out the excess. It's hilarious.

"Here I am! And 3/4 of a page of white space!"

I dont like when people try to sell things with a grainy, dark, crappy camera. Nowadays, camera's are so cheap that it almost makes me think that the people who are taking those pics are doing it on purpose, as if to scam people.

After reading through this thread I got the urge to clean the hell out of my monitors! :p

My pet peeves:

People who have both IE and FF and still have both icons on the desktop/quick launch. Choose one!

People who believe IE and WMP are the best in there field just because MS makes them!

People who move the position of my monitors.

People who buy the best GPU to play one game that can be played perfectly on a 6600.

People too afraid to install anything in there machine themselves. My bro paid CompUSA $100 to install and transfer files to a new HDD. I did that for free and in less time.

People who buy very nice 7.1 sound cards but use crappy generic 2 channel speakers.

Thats it for now.

What if its because your schools online classes dont work with FF even though they want you to use it. I have both in quick launch because I have to not because I want to. And sometimes IE just works better.

Whats wrong with having quick links to both? I don't have them on my desktop but I do have opera and ie on my quick launch. Use opera for most things and use ie for sites that don't like to run right in opera/firefox.

That price doesn't seem so bad. You are paying a tech to do it. Think that it overpriced hire a contractor to do work on your house. Setting up a new hard drive is something that is above what most end users are able to do. I use to hear about people that would end up staying on the phone with dell or hp or whoever for hours trying to reinstall windows. Doesn't seem too bad to me.

Both good points. Maybe I should have been more clear. I meant when people just don't use one at all. Its only there because they are too lazy to remove the icon. I don't have trouble viewing any pages with FF. It just bothers me when I see two browsers in the quick launch, I don't know why, but it does. It looks soo wrong! :p

I have to disagree. When I was new to computing I thought I could never install a new HDD, but I tried it and was successful. It's very easy to do. It just bothers me when people get intimated by the install menu. At least try it.

That price is outrageous. It takes 5 minutes (if you know what you are doing) to install a HDD. And all you gotta do to transfer the files is open a program and click transfer. Total of amount of actual work is 10 minutes. $100 is awfully high. But to each his own.

I can relate this to me changing the radiator in my car. This is something most people wouldn't dare touch and would just pay the what 150 bucks labor for a shop to do? Thing was held in with like 4 bolts and had 5 lines running to it. after that it was a matter of pulling parts for the fan assembly off one and putting them in the same place on the other. Very easy to do. Any idiot can do this. Most people wouldn't dare try. Thats how I look at it with him paying compusa to do it. He prob was afraid he would mess something up.

i tried adding an extra hd to my pc a while ago. after the install, i booted my pc, formatted it, and loaded my game and media files onto it. i didn't even touch any critical windows components. however, next time i turned it on, windows wouldn't load. tried to figure out what was wrong and couldn't, so i took it into compusa and they said windows got corrupted and needed to be reinstalled. this was long before i knew how to do that (now i know) so i ended up paying $100 for the install + $80 to transfer my stuff. granted, i have confidence that i wont have a problem installing a hd again, but for someone who's nervous about this kind of thing, no matter how knowledgable they are with compys, its smart.

Your example is very inaccurate. Installing a HDD is not nearly as complicated as removing a radiator. First of all there are only 2 wires connecting to the HDD. You screw it in place, plug the wires in and start up the computer. My brother knew I could do it, but he dished out his money and paid CompUSA. That is also what bothers me. Atleast try it or let someone who knows do it for much less (friends) or even free (me).

Well at least you tried doing it yourself. Its pretty strange what happened to you, and thats not the case 1% of the time. It does not bother me when people actually try to install something themselves. For example, you buy a new gig of memory, but are just to intimidated to try it yourself but its as simple as planting it in place. ATLEAST TRY. Google it, ask friends anything.

Being knowledgeable is being powerful, thus you should not be nervous at all.

Is it? to remove the hd you prob had to remove 2 screws to get into the case and 4 to get the drive out. Maybe a few more if it was in a cage. Then you have to move 2 cables and maybe a jumper. I had to remove a few big screws(bolts) and unhook some hoses which is as simple as moving a cable. Hell I would say my example was not as hard as you then had no software to mess with. If you don't like that example look how many people will not install headlights in a car. Most it is very easy. Another would be soomething simple like changing the locks on a house. A lot of people pay someone elce to do it. It is super easy too.

The only point you have is that he could have had a friend or you do it for him.

I do all that stuff to. I change my head lights, my oil. I do anything I can by myself. The point I was trying to make is that people should try something themselves (with proper instruction) before declaring themselves incapable. Thats what bothers me. If its between paying someone $100 to do it, or give it a shot, why cant most people try it themselves?

You can thank cell phones.
People think they are so great because their phone has camera.

I have a 15 yr old 1mega pixel digicam at work. Its a piece of shit like the camera in your phone and takes crappy pictures like your phone. Please for the love of Christ invest in a real camera.

I used to be abusive to my own computer. Slamming the metal door on my thermaltake (new case now) slamming the mouse and keyboard, punching the monitor... all that stopped when I grew up one day!

One case of computer abuse that made me mad was when I just ditched my old case with the motherboard and everything, so my brother got excited and switched his stuff over since I had a better processor (he had 2100+, I had 2500) then like a week later a thunderstorm hit and the whole thing got fried.

Absolutely. I've found that "not right now" works quite well. My friends understand (they wouldn't be my friends if they didn't) and my family has learned that whining about family obligations won't get them any favors.

All this discussion just made me think that for the people that really annoy me when I'm trying to help them out I now have two words for them for who to call -

GEEK SQUAD!

Codegen what was that from? They were talking about that on the radio, but I only heard the last part of the story? Was that just in the news or what?

time for another story of wonderful stupidity:

the other day, a friend and i were talking about which pwned more, cs:s or bf2, when he mentions that he has a (this is an exact quote people) "super-fast radeon xpress 3200 gpu chip drive" i told him that was integrated graphics and therefore not fast at all, he asked me what i had in my pc. told him i had an x700 pro. he then tried to convince me that his "gpu chip drive" was faster because it had 128mb of turbocache and "xpress" in the title. imo, this is just sad. its like saying a honda s2000 is faster than a ferarri f430 because the 2000 > 430.

yah, i know a lot of idiots .
