Civilization V

God this game is going to absolutely KILL any productivity/free time I'll have.

Interesting that the military victory only requires taking control of the capital - I'm not sure I like that change.

I always thought that should have a bigger impact than it does in the game...weaker nearby cities could either go nuetral, join the new regime or join a different civ or stronger cities (culturally I guess) might form thier own nation and pull in the surrounding cities...

Anyone else find the way they are dealing with mods fascinating? Instead of getting their knickers in a twist over it like the majority of companies they are letting you browse mods for civfanatics in game. Taking a fanatic user base and employing it to your own advantage instead of screwing your fans over... hmmm I know a lesson is in there somewhere *cough* ubisoft *cough*

You don't need any other mods. Check out the RoM Mod Mods section, there are a couple okay ones in there, but for the most part, RoM should be all you need.

If you don't want to go with a whole new game, which is basically what RoM is if I remember correctly, you can just get Better Beyond the Sword AI (Better BTS AI), which improves the game quite a bit (assuming you have BTS). There's also a nice interface mod, but heck if I can remember what it is called.

Is there anything like civilization with more emphasis on political relations and/or development? I really suck at the military combat in this game for some reason, but I without war it's pretty zzz.

I think the GamePro article is all I'm going to read on this game. It sold me enough on it that I don't need to see or hear anymore about it. Civ has always been a series where I like to be surprised about little changes and big changes and so on. I hope they're planning to ship it with a big manual and big poster. This is one game that really is going to need them, plus it would be a nice call back to the days when there was a point to buying physical copies of games.

Fascinating is the wrong word, but I know what you're saying. The thing is, a game like Civ lives and dies by its single-player. Sure some people play that weird over-email multiplayer mode or whatever, but for the majority Civ is a game you play against the AI. With no multiplayer games that are "different" every time to keep people playing, it would be a bit foolish to try and stop people from modding the game.

What I find fascinating is that Brad Wardell is going on a modding "sabbatical" after Elemental ships.

I think it's pretty safe to say that at some point in the next year/year and a half I'll be playing Civ V: Stardock Edition...or whatever he calls his mod :p

They're making changes - and I like all of them (the shift to hexes has been over-due).

There's no point in re-doing Civ 1, or Civ 2, or Civ 3, or Civ 4 - if you like any one of those games, then you've already got it, haven't you? They have to advance this series by taking chances and by trying new things.

In particular, I love it that the lead designer is borrowing from my favorite strategy game of all time: Panzer General. I always felt that the combat in the Civ games was actually the weak link. All you were doing really was mashing units against one another. With combined arms tactics we'll be able to strategize our attacks and defenses.

I'd have to confess though that the first Civ game won me over completely, but actually since then no Civ game has really done it for me. After reading that Gamespot preview I'm convinced that Civ 5 could potentially be the greatest Civ game ever for me personally. They seem to have addressed every issue I've had with the series.

one thing I wish they would consider is a sorta campaign I realize the meat of civ is the sandbox random game each time but a campaign going thru the ages may be interestign aswell.

obviously just a line up of scenarios but it be nice.

Whoa! Great interview.

I'd have to agree about Civ Revolution - the interface was incredibly clean, and yet all the information you needed was still there. Gamers sometimes make the mistake of thinking that a game, in order for it to be complex and challenging, must have a complex and challenging interface as well, and that's just not true. (I wish that the creators of ARMA 2 had thought more along these lines).

Also, you've gotta love the way that guy closes out the interview: "... Civilization will be available in the Fall of 2010... for the PC." :)

So.... I can pay for the game at least 6 months before it's hypothetical launch based on one gameplayless video, 5 screenshots and 500 identically vague preview articles? Done.

Were those 2 pics from civ 5? Looks beautiful, and i'll probably be scooping it up on release day.

Wasn't it Civ 2 that had it where if you capture the capital, it could cause a civil war to erupt, splitting the nation you are fighting with into 2? I always loved that, and missed it in all the other Civ games.

No game is perfect. Even great games can be more perfect than what they are.

If anything, the Civ games need to be updated semi-regularly just to keep the graphics modern - usually that means a whole new engine and a whole new UI (so 'patching' the game isn't going to work.)

I can't think of one reason not to be excited about Civ 5.

Ditto.

Civ 4 still holds up to me though. I am excited as hell about Civ 5 though. I already have my preorder in through steam. I foresee a future of being tired at work and having a PO;ed fiance... :p

Oh shit...

I never thought I'd say this, but I might have to upgrade my video card... ...for civilization...

We've come a long way since I spent countless hours with this in 1991:

I really hope my existing system will suffice without knocking down all the settings to the lowest possible...
