Chimp Challenge 2009 thread

Not open for further replies.
I think I have my i7-920 rig all dialed in for the CC. i'm getting around 8500 ppd just from my 275 depending on the WU. I have one windows SMP running and getting about 2800 ppd from that. As soon as that's done with the current WU I plan on firing up all 3 of my notFred VMs I just set up. Only had time to get one configured and running. Need more points!!!

damn. Got my second PSU in, and I cant find my damn splitter! Grr, this CC! Atleast my 3 way box is pumping out at 7k still

LOCO LAPTOP If you have too many isues with the VM ware version just go with the Windows SMP, its not as many points as running the linux version bu it is still far better then the clasic client is.

Still seeing a lot of points not going to [H]ardApe.

You're going to see this. Not everyone feels like being in the chimp challenge. Not everyone knows about the chimp challenge. Not everyone has 24/7 or easy access to all their clients so even if they wanted to change over, they can't.

Something you have to keep in mind is that the [H]orde is a very large team made up of a lot of people. Many of the teams which have ever given the [H]orde a run for its money or something like that are generally teams with several big producers and nowhere near as many small and mid-range producers. Because of this, it's much easier for some teams to switch over for this type of contest. If you stop and think for a minute, you'll realize this is the only reason there is a contest such as this. Otherwise it would be the normal PPD a team can put out.

I'll give this warning one time and one time only and it goes for everyone in here. Quit bitching about people who have not "switched over". It's even worse because the only people specifically targeted for not switching over happen to be some of the larger producers. Unless you're targeting every single person still folding under their own name, you don't have a leg to stand on.

I'm giving this warning for one reason and one reason only. If anyone presses this matter any further, it's going to cause some nasty fucking problems myself and others don't want to have to fucking deal with yet again. This happened last year and it pissed me off to no extent. If it was up to me, I would have tried to find a way to throw some jackasses off this team for what they said. I don't give a fuck how many points you put out. I don't give a fuck if you think you're putting a large contribution towards the race that everyone else should be as well. You're not entitled to jack shit and it's the decision of each individual member whether or not they choose to participate in this challenge.

I had people bitching specifically at me last year because of this challenge. At the time I believe I was around the top 20 or top 15 producers on this team. Hell, at one point not much before the start of the challenge I was almost in the top 10. I did participate in the challenge and put every machine I had easy access to into it which was the vast majority of the points I put out. However, I didn't switch anything over until I got home from work the day it started which put me a little behind. I didn't appreciate the shit I got for it and it almost made me change everything back over immediately.

Quit fucking bitching and complaining about people who haven't switched over. If you want to be polite and ask people to switch over, fine. There's not problem with that whatsoever. But if I hear even one more goddamn complaint about people who haven't switched over, I'm going to swap my one remaining F@H client back to my name. No, it's not going to make much of an effect considering it's maybe 3-4k PPD. However, I will state very clearly that I have done so and to request anyone else sick of the bullshit to do the same thing. I will also make sure to inform everyone when this comes around next year what some people have done the previous two years and request they don't even bother to take the time to help out as a number of the people who participated in previous years were inconsiderate jackasses and are not deserving of any help.

If people get pissed off by my comments here, good. If you wish to send me death threats or whatever insults, I suggest you do it via PM unless you feel like getting banned from the forum.

<snip rant>

Good points Smoke.

I wish more people saw this as a team than a individual rush for point, but it is a individuals choice to switch over.

That said, thanks again for everyone who is helping with the Challenge !

Well said.

Thank you.

Yep. I think I can speak for the majority of the Horde when I say that there is no obligation to participate in the Challenge. This is a friendly competition guys. Lets remember that and have some fun with it. Dont let your competitive side take over and cloud the real reason we do this. :)

We have had lots of new people jump in a devote their hardware to the cause and help the team out, which I am very excited to see. Thanks to all the newcomers!

If its not your hardware then its not your decision on who to put in the username field. ;)

Lets have some fun with this guys. Oh yeah, and one more thing. We need more D. :D

Smoke... you have my respect and you always have, you know that.

Posts like the one you made there are reasons why, in case you were curious.

I had commented earlier that not all of us can access our boxen to switch them over. I can't. And to be honest, even if I could, I doubt I would. They are 15 miles across town, so driving out there, reconfiguring all of them and driving back would take at least two hours. And then I'd have to do it all over again once this thing is over.... seriously guys, there's only so much some people are willing to do on top of what they already do. Don't take that as my being selfish, I'm just being honest.

I have said this over and over during the last two challenges, and I'll say it once more....

This is all supposed to be in good fun.... and all the bitching and moaning kinda sucks all the fun right out of it... really

Just my opinion, that's all....

Beers and tamales.... and Fold On!!!

I've got to slap myself for my statement since I like to advise people at work not to worry about what their co-workers are or are not doing and focus on what they are doing. And not take it so seriously. so.....

Bring on the Beer and Tamales!!!! Wait, I can't until after work. Damn, I'm on call. Got to scan more brains with the big magnet thingy at the hospital.

the [H]orde's daily output is on the climb. hopefully we can keep it up after the CC. I know several people have switched from WCG to help with the CC and a few from other teams have jumped in. But there seems to be a few newcomers as well, maybe they will get infected before CC ends.

Fold On - For a Cure

I really wish we could increase our output enough to beat the maximum_monkey.

It be nice to take out Team Cremecicle.

Gash we are losing to a frozen desert :(

Its OK, because when we lose we already have our excuse ready:

I wholeheartedly agree with your position brother Smoke. I think the people that appear to be complaing about others not switching over to [H]ardApe need to definitely "chill out" big time. I also think (it's gettin' hot in here :p) that a lot of complaints should be "chalked up" to inexperience. For a lot of peeps this is really there first foray into distributing computing and any competition between teams (hell, last year was my first). I know from experience I had a lot of adjusting to do. I had to realize the "trash talk" posts were not meant to be personal or insulting, just clean good hearted fun. :D

It even took me a while to not believe that picture nitteo posted last year was not really him or his significant other (only jokkin' ;))

Anyhoo remember "it ain't over till the fat individual sings" (gots to be PC) or something about loosing battles, but not the war

Oh yeah, it ain't the insulting PMs or threatening PMs you gots to look out for, it's the "sneaky snake" Email bombs that screw up your day :D

Let's not lose focus, this is the real goal of the CC. The point is to do something to bring in some fresh blood, and hopefully have a little fun while doing it.

Fold on!

Okay, this may get a few people pissed off at me, but here goes anyways:

Yes, this point was already made a few times - but short of PMing EVERY SINGLE PERSON not participating, I don't see any harm in a little peer pressure. I think everyone has been trying to make a point to the non-participants without being rude about it.

I'll give this warning one time and one time only and it goes for everyone in here. Quit bitching about people who have not "switched over". I just re-read every post made since the beginning of the challenge, and except for one post that mentioned FLECOM by name, I saw NOBODY being singled out. And since FLECOM isn't a top 20 producer anymore, my take is that the OP was wishing FLECOM could crank his farm back up for this CC. I think you're having flashbacks to last year where people WERE being major asshole and calling people out by name...

I'm giving this warning for one reason and one reason only. If anyone presses this matter any further, it's going to cause some nasty fucking problems myself and others don't want to have to fucking deal with yet again.

I, too was here last year and saw what you're referring to, and I don't think that, until your post, this was even within an order of magnitude of what happened last year.

I will also make sure to inform everyone when this comes around next year what some people have done the previous two years and request they don't even bother to take the time to help out as a number of the people who participated in previous years were inconsiderate jackasses and are not deserving of any help.

And I'll be sure to link right after that to your post here as proof of said inconsiderate jackass.

If people get pissed off by my comments here, good. If you wish to send me death threats or whatever insults, I suggest you do it via PM unless you feel like getting banned from the forum.
For me, watching last year's CC was what inspired my to start folding, and the biggest reason I joined here and not over at Ars or Anand was because of the welcoming community and (general) lack of bullshit drama, at least outside of the CC.

As for death threats, you ain't worth my fucking time - if you just felt the need to blow off a lot of steam, great, I'll just shut my hole and get back to folding. But I will say that if you're going to make shit out of (IMHO) nothing right now, fuck you and the HCDofM horse you rode in on. I'm in this for the team, and teammates are allowed to bitch each other out every now and then SO LONG as it doesn't start to have negative effects on the overall performance - something we weren't even relatively close to until about 12:28 PM today.

And if insulting you back for insulting a third of the posters in this thread is basis for a forum ban, then maybe it's time for me to find a new forum! I'm sorry if I offended anyone that's not SmokeRngs, and apologize in advance...

OK guys. Can we agree to disagree here? You have both made your point. Let please keep this civil. This kind of stuff isnt inspiring to new folders. The CC is. Lets make this about the friendly spirit of competition, the hardware, and a fun team challenge, not team politics.

Now where can we scrape together some more D to at least take 3rd in this Challenge? I might be able to add a video card and a VM this weekend. Or at least im going to attempt it. :D

As I'm a man of my word, I just took my little sliver of points and put my client back under my regular name. If anyone wishes to do the same, feel free to do so.

I will also request that the [H]orde not participate in the Chimp Challenge or any other challenges of a similar nature from now on. Since some people are not able to understand that a team is made up of individual members and therefore decide to cause trouble for people who choose not to participate in challenges such as this, I don't believe this team should participate in such challenges. I'm going on the record to say I will not support anything that leads to such attitudes.

Enjoy all.

i remember we had some "problems" last year regarding the enrollment to the CC

couldnt agree more.. and if you were to get banned id have to find my self a new home because if it wasnt you saying all that it probably would of been me.. but meh.. in an hour it will be a new day...

I am a first-time CCer. I joined the [H]orde last June. I respect everyone who has ever posted here with a badge and everyone who never has that has a single point on F@H or any other DC project. Smokerings made a bold post in an attempt to head off problems like unto last year. Sounds like it got nasty. Please don't let this spin out of control. No point is lost whether it is attributed to the ape or not. If this post finds all wounds healed and is unnecessary then disregard it with all haste. A little nudging is not a problem but attacking those who will not hear is pointless.

Let's look at the positive side of the kind of team we have. We have a legacy and large number of "small-time" donors that make up the bulk of the contribution to F@H. Our production has inspired many individuals and teams to step it up and try to compete with the mighty [H]orde. There is no loser in this game no matter what flag is flown.

First off calling people out for not participating is just plain rude, posting an advertisment asking for help is one thing, but when you call someone out for not switching over that is just stepping over the line.
Some people cannot change over their systems. I have a system and I cant change it. I know im not the only one.
Some people dont know WTH the CC is, and dont care.
Some people are not actively involved, they set it up and left it.

The reason the [H] is #1 is because we have so many people.
I know we have some mega folders like ROC who put out 200K PPD, but its mostly a cumulative effort.
Some of the other teams are not as many people but have huge farms, its easier for them to switch.

I didnt read this whole thread, but im sure these arguments have been made along with plenty others, and their rebuttals.
But the bottoms line is I dont think we should do this or any challenge like this any longer if its going to cause this kind of disruption.

Its great and all, and I am participating but I dont like that is brings this level of politics, and division to the forums.
We are all here and folding for the same purpose.

Fuck you and the HCDofM horse you rode in on

I'm not going to comment on anything other than what's quoted above.

That was way out of line dude, and totally uncalled for. If you disagree with what Smoke had to say.. fine. But that shit is unnecessary.

That's all. I had a whole bunch of shit I wanted to say, but it doesn't matter.

Sorry man, but I couldn't keep quiet here. Personal attacks have no place here.... and that's exactly what that was...

EDIT.. and nitrobass is right.. we're all here for the same reason, don't forget that.

Attention all newcomers!

First off, thank you for joining and helping.

Second, please know that the bickering going on in this thread is not the norm for the [H]orde. This is usually a very nice and supportive group. Please do not let the infighting of a few turn you off from folding for the [H]orde.

Now lets get back to what matters.

by the way, just scrounged up enough hardware to build a 1.6GHz dual core celeron running linsmp client folding rig. Every little bit helps.

Fold On!

/me punches digital_exhaust.. lol jk..

eh.. we all gotta let our frustrations out in some way.. sure there were some things out of line.. but all in all i think it summed up a few of our opinions.. but what ever..

arg dang you positive people.. you ruin the world.. lol nah im kidding.. ya i agree.. i mean heck up until what 4-5 months ago.. there was absolutely no one willing to compete with us.. and now we have EVGA breathin down our necks.. be it a 2 1/2 year long neck.. but still.. it just comes back down to who are the people here for the science or who are here just for the points.. hell i usually dont even care about the points except for the CC.. since i randomly select people with less then a million points and fold for them for a month or so..

The BS that went on last year was enough to push me pretty far from the forums and the community in general, seeing that really nothing has changed maybe I was right last year when I thought maybe this is not the team for me.

Good luck guys, sorry I can no longer be a part of it.

I think some strong words where said on both sides. Points where made on both sides.

That is done, and it needs to end now.

No more calling out, or yelling at each other. It will accomplish nothing. Any post after this that will fall under that I'll ask the mods to delete. I and others will not stand by and let this team bicker. Lets get back to the challenge for those who want to and leave the people who have chosen to fold for the [H] but not switch (or cannot switch because of borg location or any number of other reasons) alone. There is nothing wrong to ask them to join. It is wrong to pester them.

Now get back to kicking cancers ass instead of each others.

Looks like the teasing got out of hand or was taken in the wrong way. :(
ROC was let go but his old employer allowed his farm to remain borged. I'm sure many others don't have easy access to their farms if at all.

I do, so I added a 9600M GT on a notebook I forgot about. :p

Way to fold brother Kowan, thanks for "pulling out all the stops"

As far as this tired old argument of whether you switch over to [H]ardeApe or not, IMO it should be classified in the same catagory as TV talk host Hannity sayin' Pres. Obama was an elitist 'cause he used Dijon mustard on his hamburger or like good ole' fatboi Rush Limbaugh said VP Biden was a wus (or something along those lines) because he used ketchup on his hamburger and ketchup is for kids (under 12 yrs of age)

So to put it all in a nutshell, just worry about yourself, help your teammates or any other DCer and just politely suggest, if at all possible, switching your boxen temporarily over to CC. Please suggest the switch in a mild mannered way, not requiring a psycologist to figure it out. I'm so getting tired of the amatuer psycologists posting horseshit in this thread.

DCing for the CURE

Guys, I can't believe some of the things I've read this morning...:( The challenge isn't anywhere near as important as the folding itself, and certainly isn't worth causing a riff in the team or arguing over. We're here together, folding for a common purpose. In the grand scheme of things, it shouldn't matter what name or even what team that we're folding for - what matters is that we're folding in hopes of providing a solution, to provide means to develop a cure for some very complex diseases out there that currently have no cure. To help science, to help mankind, to help our children and hopefully provide them a better future.

Each of us has a choice, and it's up to us to make the right choice for ourselves. Everyone else needs to respect that individual's choice and accept the fact that it might be different from our own. If it means not contributing to the group efforts during the CC then so be it - it's still folding and it's still contributing to the ultimate goal.

Overall, I would like to see not only a little bit of understanding on everyone's part, as well as respect. I think that some of the things said were a bit over the top and not necessary, and that shows a lack of respect. If we lose respect for each other, then pretty soon we don't even have the material it takes to make a great team.

Let's keep it real people, and be productive part of the best damn folding team on the planet!

Get [H]ard Team #33 - Rock & Fold!!!

Come on bitches! :)

Seriously tho, I'm amazed y'all are getting so uptight over this. Just fold for 33, you don't have to switch, it don't matter. Some people are just getting dialed up over the competition and some about others and what not

He'll with the drama, just put your frustration into ovrrclocking to get more points!!

Speaking of overclocking, I now have my i7-920 up to 3.6 on air and my GTX 275 up to 711/1580/1205. Just checked FAHMon and my ppd is around 16.5k with the GPU and 3 notFrred VMs running. It took a while to get to this point and now I can sit back and watch the points roll in.

What's your PpD on the 275 alone? I'm going to guess around 8-9k, but I'd like to know how it stacks up against a 260 and 285.

It's running about 8500 ppd depending on the WU. That's with the OC I mentioned earlier and the latest 185.85 drivers I just put in this morning. It sure beats the heck out my ATI 4850 I first had. It could get about 3000 ppd running downhill with the wind at its back. Then I got greedy and got the 275.
