Bloomfield, Thuban, or wait

Yeah, I decided to bite the bullet as my financials were better than expected. I was saving for a dual Magny rig by the end of this year and realized that my entertainment budget was a little over halfway there. I did the math this morning and realized that I would need roughly $3400-3500 to do a dual 12 core 2.1ghz Magny rig with a Tyan E-ATX motherboard. I was 60% of the way there, which gave me enough in my budget for a Gulftown. From what we have seen on 2685 bigadv, an overclocked Gulftown will come within 6000-7000ppd of a dual Magny 1.9ghz rig since one overclocks and the other doesn't.

What this will free me up to do is buy a second Gulftown for my folding1 rig by this winter for the same total cost.

You just had to make me feel worthless inside didn't you?:(...I am about to bring another quad/gpu rig on board, but there is no way I'm going to be able to hold you off..

Congrads on taking my advice about the Gulftown tho;)

Yep, on the 2685s the I7 980x can really motor, but on the 2684s they lag behind a bit, and they need close to 4.3Ghz to get close to the 27:50 average TPF I got on the one 2684 the MC system folded. One thing I found interesting on the 2685s is that with -smp 23 I didn't see much difference. TPF went up by less than 45 seconds to 23:55 or so.

I'm still trying to find a way to get this sucker to OC, but it seems like ES chips are the only way to go. I found a couple on Ebay from Taiwan. I may order one for the $350.00 they are asking and try it out. With 37 celsius full-load temps I'm sure there is some head room for OC'ing.

I have the Kill-a-Watt on order so I can run some consumption tests on this baby. Hopefully I'll see it in a day or two.

Do you feel comfortable purchasing overseas? Regarding the ES processors, are the multipliers unlocked, is that why you're interested in them?

problem is on the opteron side asus does step up then they run away.. asus is notorious in the opteron motherboard market for making a board then never updating the bios to support newer processors that it should be able to support..

Yes, I know the history and it's sad. Unfortunately, I doubt Supermicro, Tyan or even EVGA will produce an enthusiast MC product. The other Opteron board manufacturers make mostly OEM products, unless I missed one. I've been out of the loop on Opteron products despite my main system is an old Opteron.

Yeah, outside of the potential of having to pay duties and taxes ad nauseum, but barring them raising the price to $500.00 per CPU, I still think it would be a great deal. Thank the lord for the high Canadian dollar these days. It seems I can't for the life of me find them any more though. May be a moot point in that case.

yeah the ES models are the way to go.. seen a few of them hit 3ghz without any issues and very little voltage increase.. the 1.7ghz 12 core magny ES model did 3ghz @ 1.27v i believe.. should smoke the hell out of anything you could get on the SR-2 seeing as how at stock the dual 12 core 2.2ghz matched the dual 12 thread 2.66ghz 5650..
 
Well, I just picked up my new rig from Micro Center and got home. Things seem to start up just fine, but Windows 7 won't install as it keeps hard locking during the install for some reason.........grrrrr

with HT enabled.. quad channel ram and the fact that its 24 physical cores makes a huge difference over clock speed and only 12 physical and 12 logical..
 
Okay, I just got Windows 7 installed. I bought 6 gigs of Corsair DDR3-1600 with CL7 timing and that is what I set the memory at manually in the bios along with a VDIMM of 1.66 since the memory is rated at those settings at 1.65.

It caused Windows to lock up each time during install, so I backed off the memory to DDR3-1333 with CL8 timings for now and it worked perfectly. Now to install drivers.........

once windows is installed you should be able to raise the ram timing to rated timing.. have had the same problem with windows 7 as well and have noticed it a lot more with the i7's..

The interesting thing is that Windows crashes on startup if I run the memory at DDR3-1600 right now. I don't know why, but I wonder whether the price for this memory was just too good to be true. However it is running fine at CL7 timing at 1333.

are you running 1T or 2T timing?

Holy smokes! That's insane if what you said further up is true. I haven't seen any results with MC systems and highlights how much out of the loop with recent AMD hardware I am these days. Someone has got to release an enthusiast board or at least come up with a way to OC these processors.

My temps shot up to the mid 70's right away. Once I shut it down, it returned to its idle temp of 28degrees.

I am going to try running Prime95 at stock speeds to see what kind of temps it will cause.

I call BS. I have TRUEs on my i7 920s and Cogage True Sprits for the SR-2 Xeons. The stock Xeons at full load had temps in the low to mid 40s. The load temps for the 920s @ 3.7-3.8GHz are in the mid 60s. Idle temp doesn't matter -- load temp, especially overclocked, is the key number.

I actually wonder whether it is partially due to the high room temps. This little guest bedroom is steaming right now as the only ventilation is from the open door.

BTW for those wondering, that Iogear 2 port PS/2 KVM switch from Micro Center is working absolutely awesome. I am currently switching back and forth between folding1 and 2 as i'm using folding1 to access the internet while 2 is stress testing.

the guy at MC is a friggin moron and half and is exactly why i refuse to let people build my shit.. anyone that even remotely says the stock 980x heatsink is any good should not be touching a computer.. the cogage true spirit owns the shit out of the stock cooler.. hell the phenom II x4 4 pipe heatsink out performs the stock 980x cooler.. honestly after hearing he said that i would be going through that box with a fine comb and checking every single thing he did on that system along with defaulting the bios and redoing all the settings my self.. at the least id be remounting that cogage..

and like sazan was saying the idle temps on intel processors are bogus.. the temp sensors they use are faulty and have a huge temp delta offset below 50C the i7's are actually worse then the C2D/C2Q's which in its self was bad.. i believe the i7's are off by 5-10C where as the core 2's its off by 2-8C.. something like that.. its posted in one of the threads on realtemps forums.. maybe if im really bored tonight ill try finding it again..


as far as the memory goes id check to see if theres a bios update for the board to possibly solve the problem or you have a bad stick some where in there but you could try swapping them around in different sockets and see what happens.. ive had ram thats been very picky about 1 stick being in the number 1 slot but working completely normal when i swapped the sticks..

With some decent TIM and a good mounting job, I'm keeping dual xeons in the mid to low 60's with trues

he'll, even my i7 when it was at 3.9ghz and in a rack with only 2 fans on the whole rig was getting 70-71

that guy doesn't know what he's talking about, and I'd check the rig to see if any rookie errors were made or if he cut any corners. That's why you should really get back into building computers, it's way to easy, andif you want practice just use some old junker parts first. Anyone here would be more than willing to help also.

Sure, the stock cooler may be better than past stock coolers, but there's no way it would top most aftermarket solutions

what's your ambient temp? Got a thermometer around? If you do, take a temp if the room ambient. Also, take a temp reading inside your case and post pics, you may just be sufocating the HS, at which point any unit will heat up

Real cores are important. My 6-core Thuban is competitive with my Core I7 at equivalent speeds while the the Thuban is also running 4 GPU clients concurrently and the Core I7 only 2. Not bad for a $200.00 1055T.

Watching the folding performance on the Magny-Cours, I can see an almost perfectly linear rise in performance when going from triple channel 1333mhz DDR3 to quad. I wish the integrated memory controllers would run at 1600mhz, I'm sure it would improve further, but I think it's hard set to run 1333 or lower. Weirdly enough, it's dual IMCs per chip (or node as explained by AMD) and dual chips/node in each chip package. That's why it's like a double-width chip with four channels of RAM.

But yeah, the 6174 Opteron is competitive with stock clocked Xeon X5650 in folding A2 BigAdv as published by Bit-Tech.

The Intel stock cooler, DB-X or whatever they call it, is a decent cooler, but the Cogage, properly installed and mated should be better. Mid 70s at stock speed on a 32nm chip seems high to me even with 6 cores+6 HT logical cores. You might want to (as suggested) re-apply the thermal paste on it and re-install. A nice thin layer that covers the entire heat spreader on the chip should work wonders. I've seen a 3 to 5 celsius change from doing this..

Alternatively in terms of running at 1600mhz, it might not be the RAM. You may have to up the VTT voltage on the CPU a step or two to get the memory controller to reliably handle 1600mhz DDR3. 1600mhz is actually considered "overclocked" RAM.

My Core I7 875K at stock BCLK/bus speed of 133 mhz had trouble running out-of-box with 1600mhz DDR3 with stock VTT voltage. I had to up the VTT to 1.25v to get it going with dual-channel RAM at 1600, and 1.30 VTT to get it running reliably at 1866mhz.

Since I know you are much more familiar with AMD chips, the VTT voltage powers the "un-core" which is everything outside the cores, and includes the integrated memory controller/IMC. At stock VTT RAM will run reliably at 1333mhz, as per Intel official spec. At 1600mhz it may not. It's luck of the draw here often.

Run it with slightly elevated VTT and try Memtest or try LinX with a 4096MB memory set. You can do it with 8 threads or less if you aren't confident in the heat sink's abilities to keep CPU temps lower.

Hi Lehmann, this is the memory I got. I find the pricing odd because it is actually a lot cheaper than Corsair's CL8 rated memory when this has CL7 timing.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R. The psu is a Corsair professional series 650 watt. The video card is a cheapass HIS ATI Radeon X1550. The hard drive is a cheap 160gb western digital. The case is a Coolermaster HAF922. The cpu is a Gulftown 980x.

I did not try that! I forgot about how to do this as I didn't have to fool around when setting my ram to 1600mhz in my gaming rig. I won't have any more time to fiddle with it till this weekend, but maybe i'll be able to get this ram working at that speed after all.

I did run Memtest originally right after Win7 got installed, but it didn't find any problems so this rules out any bad memory.

As for temps, it looks like they dropped a bit overnight. I wonder whether the thermal paste they were using needed "cooking" time. It was in the mid 70's when I went to bed last night, and right now it is running in the mid 60's with stock voltage at 3.63ghz.

Ambient room temps are hovering around 82 degrees F right now. Having a Bloomfield and Gulftown running away in this small bedroom is really causing things to cook. It is from a wall mounted thermometer. When you sit near the desk, you can really feel the heat. I am really glad that I didn't decide to go with twin GTX 480's as that would have been too much heat.

For the record at this speed, my TPF's on a 6702 is 2:11 and on a 2685 is 26min.

I can't wait to see how you do. These Gulftowns are just unbelievable! 26min TPF's and I probably am running the smallest overclock of anyone with one.

For the record, my storage/guest bedroom is now at a whopping 84 degrees even with the door wide open, and the Gulftown is still humming along around 66 degrees according to Coretemp. Well, time to go to work.............
