BenQ GW2x50(HM) thread.

Samsung S24A650SSK (the one I have) is $50 less than the GW2750HM and it has speakers and motion/light sensor. No DAC as it does not have HDMI.

So copying your list and modifying it

GW2750HM (pros)
-built-in speakers and DAC
-HDMI input
-better response
-better native contrast (I don't believe this yet)

S27A650SSK (pros)
-better OSD (has on screen indicators where the buttons are for use in the dark and is more responsive)
-built-in speakers and motion/light sensor
-better build quality
-DisplayPort
-semi-gloss coat
-better stand (rotate + height)
-super fast start up time (I see all of my post screen and resolution changes in games are instant)

Damn man.. that S27A650D is $369 over here.. a full $110 more than the gw2750hm. If it was the same price, I don't think I would think twice after seeing your photos! Gonna give this one a try first.

You can get the 24" version for quite a bit cheaper. But you already have the BenQ. Try it. It has better response anyway (at least reviewed) which sounds like what you prefer.

Sadly, I already have a 24". I wanted a bigger screen because it allows me to see more clearly for my racing sim (ie. spot the apex better). If this turns out bad, I'll probably get that 27" version samsung and see how it goes.

Ok, I did a quick comparison with my TN panel and I have to say I'm disappointed.

The usable viewing angle is very bad for a MVA panel. The colors get washed out fast as soon as your head moves a little bit to the side of the monitor. Even when your head is directly in front of it, I can tell the sides of the LCD are a bit washed out. I attribute this to the antiglare screen. Usability, I think I still prefer my old T240, which was not I expected to say.

Default settings were also very poor with ALOT of blue push (I've never owned a LED backlit monitor but this was more than I expected). I used 29 brightness, 80 contrast, 88 red, 80 green, 71 blue, gamma at 3 (which appear to be correctly set to 2.20). It's looking better than before but still needs work.

This is definitely an MVA panel because I see the same kind of motion trail as the IPS screen I have at work even at AMA premium.

This being said, once you are watching a movie or inside a game, you don't really notice these issues anymore. I'll post some pictures later.

Maybe the brightness/contrast is too high? Seems my TN panel gives me more vibrant colors.

I have noticed these A-MVA are not as vibrant as other displays I am used to. The BenQ was worse than my 650 though.

Just going by those pictures though I like your TN better.

Why are the Monitor colors in the first picture so different the first Monitor has colors yellowish colors did you piss on it?

Why yes I did. A gallon's worth.

Probably just the calibration is off. I can't get this damn thing to look right. If I drop the green, it gets too red, I can't pump up the blue or shit will become purple. I can't get it to look exactly like the Samsung. I spent a couple hours on this already. I'm gonna play with it for a few more days before considering taking it back.

Anytime I've put up a monitor against a Samsung, the Sammy comes out more vibrant out of the box (not necessarily more accurate, just more vibrant). Case in point, my Samsung T220, S27B550v, and S27B350H were all more vibrant than the Asus VK278Q that was next to them. I didn't get to compare the BenQ directly, but it does seem a little "washed out" compared to the Samsungs. I'll have to do some calibration, something I've never really had to do with a Samsung.

As of right now, I'm keeping the BenQ. I'm still very happy with it. Only other monitor I'd consider in lieu of it right now would be going back to the s28B550v. Problem is, that one has a seriously crippled speaker/dac combo, and while the backlight bleed is acceptable/typical, it's not as good as the BenQ. Also, the viewing angles on the BenQ (27" version) are significantly better than the Samsung.

Perhaps I missed it, but which panel is which? The left one is the BenQ?

The one on the left seems definitely off. Way too much green and washed out colors.

The screen on the left does have some problems, most notably with the color green and contrast and brightness need to be tweaked a little. But it destroys the monitor on the right in every picture. There are so many things wrong with the monitor on the right I don't even know where to begin, but black level, contrast ratio, the color red (looks like everyone is sun burned) and color temperature that is far too cold are what immediately jump out. If I was following the conversation right the larger monitor on the left is the benq, so is everyone else blind when they say the left is worse or are people getting confused on which monitor is which?

The monitor on the left is the BenQ. You can tell by the power lights.

And what are you saying is so bad about the monitor on the right? From the pictures the only thing you can really deduce is contrast/black levels/viewing angles. In those areas the monitor on the right is definitely better. Just like my TN to BenQ A-MVA comparison went.

Colors you can only do comparatively as you do not know how or what the camera is doing to the colors or what your own monitor is doing to the picture.

Right, without both monitors in the same picture one can't compare, however with both one can get an accurate view of which one is at least more accurate. Without equipment and a proper calibration its a little difficult to say if a problem is the cause of the panel or bad adjustments in user menu but here's a break down of what I see wrong with the TN on the right:

Picture 1: I believe this is the video game Deus Ex. The yellow tint is the artistic intention of the creators, it's supposed to be there as you can see in this screenshot: http://blog.gamesdaypodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution-Condition-Check-570x320.jpeg The TN is far far too blue in color temperature and completely destroys what the game is supposed to look like.

Picture 2: Of course the MVA panel has darker bars, but it also doesn't "crush" the blacks like the TN does. Details in the city in the back left are lost in the TN, though the MVA might be revealing TOO much in the black, perhaps lowering brightness on the VA or increasing brightness on the TN would improve either. Color temperature again is obnoxiously cold on the TN.

Picture 3: Horrendous color on the TN unless everyone in the movie has red hair and sun burn. Too much blue tint and loss of detail on the suits.

Picture 4 and 5: MVA obviously has better viewing angles

Picture 6: MVA appears too green and too bright, though I don't know what the movie is supposed to look like. TN is again far too cold in color temperature with a strong blue hue destroying the picture.

I agree that is appears that there are problems with the colors on both monitors. It is really difficult to say which is better or worse without knowing what the colors are supposed to look like originally, however.

If the first pic is supposed to be green-ish, then yep, the one on the right needs some major calibration too.

But I wouldn't say the BenQ destroys the TN based on these pics. They both look a bit messed up to me. If I had to pick one I liked best, just off of those pics, I'd probably choose the one on the right, simply because it looks less washed out and a bit sharper. A better test would be if both monitors were properly calibrated. I also may not be getting the best view of them either, as my NEC just finally conked out and am using my old CRT right now. The one thing I would say, in my opinion, is that the BenQ doesn't exactly wow me based on any pics presented in this thread, 24" or 27" -- they are either lackluster displays, or in need of some serious calibration (probably a bit of both).

The 24" is sharper because the pixels are denser. The 27" left side gets washed out because of poor viewing angle. I'll do a bit more adjustment tonight. Colorimeters are too expensive for me. Gonna see where I can rent one.

You're effin kidding me. When I ordered mine yesterday they didnt have the S listed only the SSK. The difference being SSK has the motion/light sensor. Frack!

EDIT: It's the same SKU too... I e-mailed them to see if they will offer a price protection sorta thing.

They honered price protection for the monitor. $30 refund for me! Yay!

Is the monitor on the right not in its native resolution in the movie scene with two men talking to the lady? The head of the man on the left, on the monitor on the left, looks stretched and disfigured to me

Good catch. I could be wrong, but it looks as if he cloned the display to make sure that they were both displaying the same image. Problem is that the T240 is a 16:10 1200p monitor. If he had simply done 1080p cloning with 1:1 on the T240, it would be letterboxed. It doesn't look to be the case, meaning one of the monitors would have a distorted image.

Again, not sure if that's what he did, but it looks like it to me. Oh, and I'm going to have to say that the left monitor looks the best and most accurate overall. Samsung has more vibrant but less accurate colors. It's something of a change for me going from all those Samsungs to this BenQ.

You guys aren't wrong. The T240 is 16:10 1920x1200 but it's scaled to 1920x1080 (I'm using cloned display).. which makes it look like that. Piece of shit T240 didn't have 1:1, which pissed me off quite a bit when i got it back then. But picture looked pretty good for a TN, so I kept it. I compared all the screens in store back then.

I'm using this to calibrate:

http://www.imaging-resource.com/ARTS/MONCAL/CALIBRATE.HTM
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gamma_calibration.php#gamma-test-2.png

I still like the reds on my Samsung better. I mean damn, I got the stupid grey box to look proper grey and it kinda looks like it blends with the bigger box. The whites look better now, the three gamma color things are kinda 2.2 ish.. well blue's a bit off. Why the heck is there still a green push on everything? I just checked Deus Ex, it's the same shit. It's a bit worse in the photo than it is.. but yes it's greenish. I checked my Dell 2209 and the colors look around the same as the Samsung. Red looks red. On this monitor, reds don't look right.

These look ok:

Despite the Samsung probably being oversaturated with reds, it still looks quite alot better.

I wouldn't say a lot better. Yes, in some cases, the Samsung image looks better, but at the same time I see less detail in the shadows (crushed blacks?) on the Samsung monitor and the color temperature on some of the pictures (especially on the previous page) is way too cold for my taste.

PS: I'm not saying the Benq is the better one. It is difficult to decide which looks better in person by looking at pictures on the internet.

Pictures always make a monitor look like it is crushing blacks unless the brightness is up way to high. My A-MVA monitors are the same way. In person they look perfect in shadow detail.

From the pictures I prefer the TN. I will always choose a display with red push over blue or green. Of course having accurate colors would be prefered lol

Nice job on the calibration Twitch. Big improvement on the TN monitor. Was the Benq calibrated as well, the brightness looks a little high. It should be easy to get right with a pluge pattern. What model is the TN again?

The TN is the Samsung T240. I lowered the red by 10 and increased brightness (mind you the CCFL is 4 years old now).

I did calibrate the Benq as well.. so that the grey box is grey and not reddish or greenish. I had to look away a couple of times so that my eyes can recalibrate lol. In the end I used something like 92 red, 91 green, 87 blue, gamma 3, standard, contrast 60, brightness 20.

Yes, in person, it doesn't look that dark and the colors are actually warmer on the Samsung monitor, as in flesh tones are preferably redder and contrast is more significant between dark and light scenes. Where as the Benq had a paler greener color.

I looked at Playware's review again, they mentioned, Gamma set to 4 is 2.22 and Color can be set to Standard and Normal for roughly 6500k. I will try one more time tonight. Basically I have found that Samsung right now has perfect greys and good whites and I think whatever post processing they do underneath produces more vibrant reds and blues. When I go to Futureshop.ca's website on the Samsung, I can tell clearly, red is red. When I view it on the Benq, I think its kinda red but not like the red you see when you look at a red Ferrari in bright sunlight.

Is the BenQ hooked up via HDMI or DVI? If HDMI, are you using an Nvidia or AMD GPU?

those monitors colors are so wrong...
deus_ex_hr_code_thumb.jpg

BTW. TN have gamma too high. BenQ definitely have it too low.

Actually in real life, the samsung looks like the picture you posted. My camera is a crappy point and shoot, it's hard to do proper picture. Maybe I'll take a picture of them individually.

So what is the verdict on text for these things, i have some office ladies who need a new monitor badly, they are using a 17" 4:3 LCD from like 1998.

From reading this thread most seem to be very happy with text? Or its as good as other higher rated "text" monitors?

Text was very good on both my Samsng and BenQ A-MVA. The BenQ would be prefered for an office I think thanks to the anti glare.

Hooked up via DVI. Tried HDMI and setting range to 16-235, it was the same result. Using nvidia.

Ahh, ok. There's a driver trick you need to do with Nvidia to do 0-255 over HDMI. If you're on DVI, you're on 0-255 by default. Bug in NV drivers with monitors that detect as an HDTV over HDMI, but works fine on AMD. Just finally got 0-255 working on mine today and the difference is pronounced in some cases. Less banding.

Text seems to be the same to me as any TN I've ever used, and a little clearer than my wife's Apple Cinema Display.

In real life colors are more like on CRT photo and even slightly more yellow/green and there are no such differences between monitors. Also it's CRT that is more saturated because it have higher gamma and I didn't corrected it here because this is clone mode. Still LG looks more saturated from those photos and it's probably from sharper RGB-LED light that fools cheap filters in my phone camera (Wave s8500). For good camera that wouldn't matter because good cameras use filters more similar to human eyes.

anyway, those still look much better than BenQ and Sammy up abowe

Why did it had to be w2420r and not some 500 eur monitor that I didn't think about :(

I returned my GW2450 also. I thought I would be a great deal at $180. I calibrated a little then played games on it. It had a weird banding during gaming whenever there would smoke or vapor scenes. The bands would literally be over the smoke. Also the side to side viewing angles were horrible. Not even close to the advertised 178*. Just moving your head 1-2 inches off center the colors and contrast chaged alot. My other 3 monitors never had these problems(Samsung, Hanspree(TN)). Thought it was my monitor so I compared it at a local Frys that had it on display and it was the same. =(

I experienced all these things too with the monitor. Smoke on the menu screen in Skyrim seemed strange - not really too bad but something seemed banded like you said within the smoke. Also saw banding when Windows shut down on the exit splash screen.

My point and shoot ZS7 camera isn't able to reproduce the same colors I saw with my eyes. Some shots are pretty close but that deus ex menu was definitely troubling it. If I had a better camera, it would probably look like those other screenshots.

Anyway, I gave up with the Benq. It's going back.

Sorry to hear that man. Mine has been outstanding and has easily lived up to the Playwares review. It grossly exceeded the Asus TN that I used temporarily, and was overall better than the Samsung TNs I used for a few weeks (although those were truly outstanding for 60hz TN sets).

My only issue with the monitor was the limited range due to Nvidia's driver issues. I had to mod an INF file to get it working, and will have to do that every driver update until NV decides to fix it. That's an NV issue though, not a BenQ issue.
