BenQ GW2x50(HM) thread.

244T vs GW2450HM

Either better or worse? I don't think so. BenQ has slightly better blacks and less input lag. 244T has smoother ghosting and better startup times (responds almost instantly to resolution changes). In the short time using the BenQ I find it is a little easier on the eyes. Text is clearer and easier to read on the BenQ, not a lot mind you.

I could order the 650 samsung and have it within my return window on the BenQ. I think I might just do that.

I am just disapointed. I was hoping A-MVA would be vastly superior. It isnt. And LED makes it worse. And honestly I actually prefer my TN panels at work. But that is in office lighting, not dark room lighting.

Saying you prefer your TN panels at work isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. The clearer text may be related the the A-MVA pixel structure when compared to the S-PVA. At least that is one positive.
Based on the contrast listed for the BenQ, I would have guessed it'd have much, much better blacks. It should be 3000:1 (or better) compared to 1000:1.

Yeah, it would be interesting if you paired up the 650 w/ the BenQ and see which looks better. The 24" 650 may be a better choice if doing a direct comparison, so the dpi and everything is equal.

If you wanted to push your luck, you could even order the 27" BenQ + Samsung 24", compare all three, and just pick whichever you liked best. But I have no idea as to the return policy from where you are buying them... you don't want to get stuck with all of them.

Yeah I am really confused. The playwares review and specs on the BenQ it should be MUCH better. I am at work and I just closed all the blinds and shut off the lights. I am seeing a much better contrast ratio on these TN's (Asus VH242H) and of course no ghosting or input lag.

And I can buy these monitors pretty well anywhere for $170. I will bring one home this weekend I think.

What do you suppose is the difference between LS24A650S and LS24A650SSK?

EDIT: Difference is the sensor thing. And Memory express doesn't have the SSK version darn...

Ordered the LS24A650S. Should have it friday and then I can compare and send one or both back. I do not feel comfortable ordering the 27" as well. Nor do I really want a 27" monitor.

The only other option is to find the smallest plasma I can find lol.

Wish I could see a PLS monitor in person. Too expensive to "try"

There shouldn't be better contrast on a TN, especially those Asus monitors. I get my 27" BenQ in tomorrow, so I'll report back. Over the past month I've had 4 TN panels come across my desk (Samsung S27B550v x2, S27B350H, and Asus VK278Q). If the BenQ fails to impress, I'm going back to one of the Samsung panels.

TN panels contrast max's out around 1100:1, but most are in the 800-1000:1 range, there is no way an Asus TN has better contrast than a VA panel since the BenQ's will have at least a 2,000:1 contrast ratio.

Same goes for S-PVA, an older mode like the 244T will be lucky to go over 1100:1.

There is some black crush on the BenQ here, but it is obvious the black levels are way deeper/contrast is way higher than the LG in this photo. Of course the brightness difference should be taken into account

If Amazon.ca gets these in stock I will test one out.

That is exactly my point. The BenQ obviously does have higher contrast and a bit better blacks, but not to the point to suggest the incredible values that the playwares review gives the 27". I should also rephrase. The Asus TN's don't have higher contrast, but they have better blacks. The BenQ gets awfully bright. I prefer better blacks over contrast though.

And there isn't any black crush on the BenQ. That is just the camera going off the LG's higher luminence. The settings on the BenQ are the same between the pictures. Just the exposure of the camera is different. In person all the detail is there.

The difference in black levels do seem more pronounced in the LG to BenQ comparison.

If you look at the 244T vs BenQ, they seem a little less pronounced. Perhaps it's as simple as the BenQ being closer to 2000:1, while the S-PVA is around 1000-1100:1? I've read that sometimes there is a discrepancy between contrast levels within the same panels, so it's possible that the 24" BenQ he got was just a bit low on the contrast scale... while others of the same exact model may be better?

But it doesn't look like 5000:1 contrast from those pics. I take it that black crush is something like pics of those rocks, where details are all lost to blackness? Is there a way to fix that in settings/calibration?

Either playwares review is very off or the 24" is not the same as the 27"

Brightness = 60
Contrast = 80
Red = 90
Green = 80
Blue = 72
Gamma = 4

Best settings I could come up with in a short time.

Whites seem yellowish with Blue at 72. On mine, at 76 Blue, whites look white to me.

That isn't possible, high contrast=deep black except when using a display at a ridiculous brightness...but even then, 2,000:1 contrast @ a high brightness of 200cdm/2 will still produce a nice shade of black while most TN and IPS panels will show dark-light greys.

Sounds like you need to turn the brightness down, Try <30 in the OSD. The Asus TN's can only have better blacks if you are using them with little brightness while keeping the BenQ's brightness cranked.

I had an EW2420 in 2010 and used a brightness setting of 26 to achieve 120cdm/2, the GW should be similar.

Brightness in those pictures was at 30. The lg was 30 as well. Samsung is 55. My asus at work are over 50.

What is a good dark photo I could do F11 to check how my monitor's blacks look?

You sure they are Asus TN's? Asus also has an A-MVA panel, the ML249H....

Everything I have read says they are TN. Response and viewing angles concurs. Also the difficulty producing some colors.

I agree with you going back over it tonight. I moved my blue up to 75.

Here is a picture showing the lack of black crush on the BenQ. One area it actually does beat the 244T in.

The asteroids loose detail on the 244T

EDIT: image compression kinda killed this one... ill try and upload a better one tomorrow.

How does the GW2450HM look from color representation point of view. comparing it with a TN panel and with an IPS/PLS panel. Is it closer to a real 8 bit IPS panel or to a TN panel, from washout/vibrant/acurate colors point of view?

The more I use my Asus PA246Q I get to the conclusion that the colors on the Samsung S24A350H are washed out, some colors are wrongly produced and the screen lacks color. Also I get the feeling that in terms of color the Asus PA246q looks compared to the Samsung as it would be a 120hz TN panel compared to a 60 hz one.(viewed perfectly from the front ofc).

Also about contrast, on my Samsung, I can only get a decent contrast if I raise brightness to a level where whites look overly bright and are sparkling.
If you lower the brightness on your Benq to a level where you feel very comfortable the way the white background looks, so that you can say "with this brightness i can work 10 hours", will you still have enough contrast on the text?

@Bun-Bun
can you make fullscreen photo of this?:
strippy.png

For better effect cover power LED.
Angle should be 0 degree and distance closest you can get with whole panel in frame.

@cerbul
panel bitdepth have nothing to do with color vibrancy
and 60/120Hz have even less influence on color vibrancy

PA246Q is wide gamut and only because of that it is more vibrant...

Yes I will take a photo of that tonight.

I have never used a IPS nor have access to one to compare.

Colors are definitely better than a TN. I wouldn't put it any better than my 244T mind you but the contrast helps bring out some details the 244T misses. Colors are not as vibrant as my 244T but I think that could be corrected with proper calibration.

EDIT:

Just want to clarify. I am not saying the BenQ is a horrible monitor. I was just hopeing for more. As it stands I can't stand to game on my computer thanks to my Samsung PN58C8000 (measured blacks of .01 cd/m2). Response and blacks are just too good on it.

That said for $180 I paid for this BenQ compared to the $700 I paid for the 244T, it is a good monitor. I am just dissapointed that it wasnt significantly better (to what the playwares review made the 27" out to be)

If you do not mind, try :

Red 78
Green 80
Blue 78

Contrast 72

Rest of setting the same and let me know if you like it?

That is what I found best so far. With your settings, I saw too much red in light colors. For example, Yahoo.com front page had pinkish orange borders/sides etc.

Well, Fedex delivered my monitor today while I was at the doctor's office with the baby. Would have been nice if they had delivered it to MY HOUSE. So, gotta wait for the guy to get home and get it off him. I don't know if I have will time for photos tonight, but when I go, I will try to give a comparison to my wife's ACD. That should give us an idea of where it stands next to a good IPS.

I picked two GW2450's up today at Fry's, but I'm afraid to take them out of the box because of 15% restocking fee :eek:

I mainly just want a couple of nice monitors, that display text well, and I can watch movies on.

How do these compare to Viewsonic VX2450WM-LED or Asus VS248H-P?

Edit: When I looked at the monitor in the store I noticed that the colors were not as vivid as the other monitors around it, even after I adjusted the brightness/contrast. Also when a movie would fade to black I noticed some weird like ghost effect before it went completely black.

If the entire monitor was like the center of this one... I would be extremely happy with it!

And for comparison the Samsung 244T

dsc0103ke.jpg

I took both pics at the same shutter speed and aperture opening. I took serveral till I got the correct shutter speed for how it looks to my naked eye.

Everything looks washed out at those settings.

I have settled for 84-80-74 with brightness at 40 and contrast at 80

You want to compare a TN 6-bit with 1000:1 contrast vs a VA 8-bit with 5000:1 that's like comparing a Smart vs a Jeep. :)

*glances at those striped pictures*

Either my monitor is off, or bun-bun's is (or camera changed something). Original pic looks like black/gray stripes to me. Bun-bun's looks like it has too much blue, not enough black.

Either I need to calibrate, or he does.

You're not seeing things (but I can't comment on your monitors calibration). Look at the 244T pic right after it.

I can't get rid of that blue tinge off everything. I hate LED. HATE IT!

The 244T looks a bit off to me too. Not as much as the BenQ, but the black/gray on the 244T isn't as dark as on my panel (which should be similar panels). Mine could be off some though, as the only calibration I did on mine was via eyeball.

The blue tinge is bad though... that ain't so good. It'd be interesting to see someone test that panel who owns a calibration device, see if they can get it better.

The 244T has a red tinge to it (which to me is better than blue. I'd rather things be warmer than colder). But it isn't calibrated currently. I had it better but something screwed up somewhere along the lines and I never bothered to fix it. Just adjusted it enough to get the black levels down.

Every LED I have sat in front of I have had the same problem. Everything is blue.

Just hooked it up. My first thought was, "Holy crap that's washed out!" However, it was set to 0-255 for HDMI/DVI. Changed it to the correct 16-235 and it looks nice. Still playing with it, should hopefully have comparison shots with an ACD by tomorrow night. We'll see.

Set to what? huh?

EDIT:

Dynamic range ok... where did you find to set that?

This monitor looks really awesome on paper. Any chance you guys can post a PixPerAn photo with AMA off, high and premium? Can anyone also test some first person shooters on it?

Also, noticed CoolColJ here has a CRT, can you post a http://tft.vanity.dk/ input lag test?

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm uncertain CoolColJ has this monitor, I think he took a picture of a S-PVA monitors. Can someone post input lag photos between 244T and this monitor? Then I can subtract the difference to see how fast it is. Thanks in advance!

I can try to do that tonight or tomorrow.

I also have a fast TN I could put it against. A Samsung 930BF

These won't have any input lag. The BenQ EW2420/BL2400 have 2ms of input lag when measured with an oscilloscope by prad.de, and the GW uses the same panel.

Also, the input lag timer found here: http://tft.vanity.dk/ is 100% useless since it is very inaccurate.

Thanks NCX! I didn't know Prad.de did measurements for EW2730, which was actually my first choice.

I have the none-HM version and when I go to that tab that bottom option is greyed-out. I only have 5 options on that tab, do you have 6? My 5th one, the last one, with a blank 6th space below it, is 'Color Format.' Is that the last one for you or you have another?

If another, is that option only HDMI oriented? Does it not apply to DVI?

Sounds about right. My 5th option is Color Format. The option I mentioned was the 6th one. Also, it does seem geared towards HDMI.
