Battlefield 3 to require Origin

Valve forced steam down our throats and there was a huge outcry at the time. There are still users that hate valve for that. It will eventually pass and we will play games and have fun. Fucking get over it.

lol. And Impulse, but that's a waaaaay smaller company that is now irrevelent. But you should of seen the bitching on the forums. Probably pirates, lol... (makes a lot more sense if you were there at the time).

I dont remember a big outcry. I remember some bitching but most people didnt have a problem with it because Steam is such an excellent client. Most gamers even put their non-Steam games on there just because its nice to have one central location and everything set up for it.

But thats beside the point. Even if Steam is all shitty for making us use Steam with Valve games, that doesnt mean that its not a pain in the balls for every other publisher to come along and make all their games exclusive to their particular client.

I think the opinion of the masses right now is we love and want to use Steam. It works great and we're happy with it. If other publishers want to have their own clients, thats fine. Come out with something as good or better than Steam and the masses will flock to it because extreme fanboys aside, we go where the superior product is. But dont come out with a half assed, watered down imitation of Steam and force us to use it in order to buy your games. That right there is the rub.

When it was first released, it was horrible. When HL2 came out and required Steam, it was a disaster. However, at the time, there was no alternative.

Yup, I hated Steam when it was first released, I was pissed off as were a lot of people in general. I avoided it for ages.

steam is fucking malware

I keep telling you guys

I think most people complaining about Origin haven't even used it themselves. I used it for the BF3 Alpha and it was rather nice IMO.

Don't bash it until you try it.

Personally I prefer a game launcher like Origin as opposed to CD swapping to play my games.

Origin isn't bad, but the requirement is still annoying. I used to praise Origin for not being required to run games. Now that BF3 requires Origin to be running that completely removes one of the big things it had over Steam.

It's not terrible, but there's nothing particularly great about it. Steam is much better, and I'd rather not have to use two different programs.

Well that confirms it, 120$ i'm gonna save now not buying this and diablo 3, but then again I was probably never going to buy it at fully price anyway. Absolutely REEKS of overhype to me. Sure the graphics and engine looks nice but think back to how much praise Crysis got before release simple due to it's engine, only to be let down by poor optimization and gameplay focus. As far as I see it, the battlefield puts out consistently "good" games, but has never created a truly "great" game. This will probably be the same case for bf3 unless something is VASTLY changed in their focus.

Except BF3 will probably be the definitive shooter and set the standard going forward. Lots of people saying they are not going to get it.. I'm sure most eventually will. The days of Steam only are coming to an end..

except, now it's origin only which most people seem to not understand.

I keep hearing...this is good, competition is good!!1!!. cept, this isn't competition if you can only get it at one place.

Fuck greedy ass EA. I hope this game gets pirated to high hell. And I hope that each time it does, the pirates write a little script that sends a text file back to EA showing them how many sales they lost due to their greed.

Yeah, yeah, I know....I'm just lashing out

You can still buy it elsewhere, but it always ties to Origin no matter what, just like any Steamworks title actually. Though you are right about it not being competition. Valve and EA are both avoid competition with their own titles.

They'd rather be meek and accept their fate, calm as Hindu cows, rather than actually say and do something that would require a shred of integrity, such as not buying the fucking game.

It's far easier to rationalize purchasing an AAA title than it is to simply say No.

I don't quite understand it personally, saying No has never been a problem to me, it's in fact, one of the easiest things I can do.

It's a skill far too many of us have been raised to do without.

I am reminded of Batman Arkham Asylum. The AMD card owners cried about the shady business practices between Eidos and Nvidia, and spoke of "settling" for the console version.

It doesn't. Origin is only going to be selling EA games, and Steam, from the looks of things, is only going to be selling non-EA games. That's the opposite of competition. Anyway, there's no shortage of digital distributors out there already.

That's true about digital distribution services. I forgot about all the different types out there already. But, I wouldn't count out Origin selling non-EA games yet. If they get as much traction as Steam then they'd be in a position to do so. And EA would love to oust Steam and GFWL.

I've got Steam and Origin running on my system and it doesn't affect the performance of the PC. If it does, I am not seeing it.
Steam is using 112MB and Origin is at 90MB on my system.
And my machine is a mid-range PC.

lol. steam days are hardly and wont be any time soon over, just look at the catelog they have for games!

I'm getting increasingly sick of the shit involved in even playing a PC game these days. I wasn't happy when I was forced to use steam and I'd still be more than happy if I could play without steam. Then I have EA accounts, Ubisoft accounts, YuPlay account for Wings of Prey, Rockstar Club for GTA and now Origin account too. I think publishers are lining up for a shot at forcing you to buy directly from them for whatever price they decide.

EA and Origin accounts are the same thing, but yeah the account thing is getting annoying. I like competition in the digital space BUT I really don't want accounts for every bloody publisher especially if I'm not playing online.

Publishers want you to get sick because they know you'll eventually buy the console version.

Someone should setup an open source DD framework. Let publishers throw their games up on there, set up an API so that they're responsible for the hosting of the game, have them use standard payment processors so to the end user it just looks like a single unified platform. One log on will unify all of your accounts and games in a single interface.

Add community features perhaps even beyond what steam offers and you'll have yourself an open source XBL clone, at least in terms of the community. Trash XBL all you want, but one of the things it does amazingly well is getting you and your friends together to play a game. Steam is kind of like that, but it's lacking a certain unity or cohesiveness to it.

Funnily enough, if anyone at MS had any vision, they could easily build something like this into Windows 8, sort of like an app store for games, except adding game specific functions and not taking any cut of the profit because as we can see, greedy companies like EA will fragment the whole thing.

If you don't agree with what EA is doing, then don't buy the game. It's what I'm doing. Fuck off EA.

Simple as that. If you don't agree with them then don't buy it. You can either stay true to your word and stand by it or cave in and buy it. It is the buyer's choice in the end. Vote with your wallet.

Maybe it goes up the longer the PC is on and the amount of games you play.
My uptime is 2.5 days and I played Black Ops and Counter Strike on Steam and played Crysis 2 and Medal of Honor on Origin in the past 2.5 days.

Sadly there is no real incentive to do this. Maybe if their is enough consumer backlash from every company having different requirements.

The problem with MS integrating more services into Windows is antitrust regulators will come down on them. There are some rumors though of them doing an integrated "app market" though.

I find Steam memory usage is more than it tells you in task manager. It must have some extra processes running or something, because when I close Steam the ram usage drops by more than task manager was telling me it was using. At least that's how it used to be, maybe they've updated it in a recent patch.

Try using process hacker instead - http://processhacker.sourceforge.net/

Steam does run a service though in addition to the program itself.

But all this is kind of a moot point, I mean Firefox is using more than both combined no matter how you count it. And personally I never bother to close it when gaming, I even use it when gaming. I actually do a lot of my posting here while Dow 2 searches for matchups.

Everyone here has more RAM than they had harddrive space in the 90's. Some people here can't even count how many gigs of it they have even after taking their socks off. RAM is there to be used, hamstringing a program just so it doesn't use an ABUNDANT resource is foolish and modern memory management will allow sharing of that resource just fine no matter what. System memory is fast, and keeping a program outside of it is a great way to kill performance. We should be complaining about how much memory these programs AREN'T using. Have fun when the program hits the disk looking for something.

Not aiming this mini-rant at Steam and Origin specifically, it is just getting ludicrous how many of the regulars here still have the mindset of "RAM is expensive and scarce" as if we are are still in the 486 era.

Steam's memory usage varies when the client is maximized on your screen and when it's minimized to the system tray. For me it's 80-100MB in the first case and about 10-20MB in the second. Origin doesn't seem to display the same behavior for me... it stays at 80-90MB no matter what.

Ok, I see what it does now.
It was in the tray at 112MB, brought the interface up and then I was clicking on random games in my list and it would go up a little, probably loading the news text and graphics into ram. I got it up to 127MB and then when I sent it to the tray it dropped to 12MB and is now at 16MB and rising.

Hallowed are the Ori, and blessed are those who follow the path of Origin!

Look, it stinks that I can't get it from Steam, but since I can't get it there I'll be getting a physical copy anyway. At least by associating it with Origin I won't need the disk in the drive (ewww, how long has it been since anyone has needed that?) and it will be patched automatically.

As much as Origin is not Steam, I really doubt they'll screw things up so much that it will make my life any more painful than if it used Steam. In the short term, anyway - my physical copy is a hedge against the long term.

Why the hell do you have so many processes? I only have like 40.

Anyways, my question is will BF3 use securom through origin, that would be pretty goofy if it did.

I have 99 processes at this time, and I'm not running much of anything in the background, under Win7 HP x64. (Just MSI Afterburner, logitech keyboard manager, mse, fraps, and windows media center + 1 ie tab and 1 firefox tab). It's not unusual at all on a modern PC. If you're under XP 40 sounds around right.
