DICE says that even if you don't use Origin to buy Battlefield 3, you'll still have to connect to EA's online service in order to play the game.
The reaction to news that the upcoming military shooter Battlefield 3 will not be available on Steam was surprisingly strong. An awful lot of gamers are put off by the fact that if they want to buy the game online, they'll have to install Origin to do so.
But it turns out that Origin won't be mandatory just for those folks who like to shop online. All versions of the game will require a connection to Origin, according to DICE Global Battlefield Community Manager Daniel Matros, even those purchased at retail.
"Yes those 'rumors' are true," Matros tweeted in response to a question about reports on Battlefield forums that disc-based versions of the game will still require Origin.
It's not really a huge shock, given the online-focused nature of the game, but another client running in the background, sucking up CPU cycles and RAM, is not something that's likely to make gamers very happy. A lot of people have declared, sincerely or otherwise, that if they can't buy Battlefield 3 on Steam they won't buy it at all, and I wouldn't be too surprised if this has a similar impact.
Battlefield 3 comes out on October 25 for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Except BF3 will probably be the definitive shooter and set the standard going forward. Lots of people saying they are not going to get it.. I'm sure most eventually will. The days of Steam only are coming to an end..
 
I knew I had my hopes too high. Guess I'll just preorder through Origin then and get the preorder bonuses. Sigh.

This is true and is both good and bad at the same time. Means we'll have to manage multiple connect clients. But it also means competition. Don't know about that one. Have any of us really seen better browsers due to competition?

Well, here nor there, I'll be buying BF3. The "Alpha" was pretty good to me and Origin was easy and painless. I'm getting the DVD copy though. Some games I like on hard media even if I have to connect to play it.
 
Dear gaming companies: stop punishing all of us because of the out-of-country people who pirate your games and make you feel cheated.

It's like an arms race; as soon as you come up with a new defensive weapon, someone will make an evil thing to get past it. So here's an idea: stop trying to force us all into legally purchasing games (even though I am legal, I'm convinced that's the reason these companies force this sort of crap) before someone invents the equivalent of a hacker a-bomb and then we all have to live with the threat of internet holocaust and we'll have another cold war and all that crap. Just stop.
 
This is not any different than Valve (or Steamworks) games - you can buy Portal 2 at retail, but you still have to have Steam running to play it. And are people really worried about Origin "sucking up CPU cycles and RAM" in today's quad-core 8GB RAM world?

Why is everyone under the impression that BF3 is going to be something revolutionary? If you've played BF2 and you've played BC2, then you've pretty much played BF3 already.

It doesn't. Origin is only going to be selling EA games, and Steam, from the looks of things, is only going to be selling non-EA games. That's the opposite of competition. Anyway, there's no shortage of digital distributors out there already.

This has absolutely nothing to do with piracy or DRM. They're doing exactly what Valve did with HL2, forcing their store client on millions of people by bundling it with a high-profile title.

But Steam only worked out for Valve because they're not a publisher; other publishers don't (or at least, didn't...) treat them as a competitor. You're not going to see Activision signing any Origin distribution deals any time soon...

I recently decided that I will not be picking up BF3. I was going to get it, but if it required origin I decided not to. Mainly because I was almost done downloading BFBC2 on Origin and I was going to resume the download then Origin gave me an error and says I have to restart the whole download. I have very very slow internet. and 8.5gb download gone to a waste, didnt work out for me (especially having to wait 30+ hours to download 7gb -_______-)
 
And it begins. So much for the "Steam is being the bad guys here. We at EA are innocent little angles as pure as the wind driven snow. We dont want to pull our games from Steam, theyre just big meanies" load of shit EA's been peddling since Crysis 2 disappeared from Steam.

Because what they say and what they do doesn't warrant it? They say they can't release on Steam due to support/content restrictions set by Steam, then they turn around and say it requires Origin, a competing digital release platform similar to Steam.

I'm not a BF or Steam fanboi, but the terrible level of fail written all over this is beyond comical. They are shooting themselves in the foot at every turn while making statements about how they are planning to take on COD. It is just too good. For the record, I'm not a COD fan either, but Activision can burn.

It isn't a thread for no reason. A lot of people don't want Origin. I have it (3 games on it) and could care less honestly.

You have 2 more Origin games than I do, and the same care I have for Steam :p and Impulse. And GFWL. And Origin. The only service I really agree with is Blizzards, but they don't bother with a stupid external client - it's simply the built in game updater + downloader :p

Incorrect. The only games that requires GFWL are the ones for which the developers chose to use it. Microsoft does not require anyone to use GFWL in their games.
 
yes its a hassle to have different game clients/friend lists and such. But as long as Origin doesnt get in the way of enjoying the game I'm not going to cry over it.

Care to explain how? No GFWL games that I am aware of have been pulled from Steam due to the reasons EA gave. A lot of people don't like GFWL either. Once again I don't care what any game uses as long as it doesn't turn my PC into a heaping pile of shit. So again, what part of my argument is invalid?

I fucking hate GFWL! Now Ive got some GFWL marketplace icon popping up on my taskbar from time to time after I play a GFWL game that I have to go manually close even after closing the game out. I wish the people that required GFWL to play a game, would burn in hell. Let me just play the game I PAID FOR without forcing all your bullshit on me.

And for the predictable posts coming in here calling us whiners and all that, this bitching isnt about using Origin, its about being FORCED to use Origin. If theyd left their games on Steam there wouldnt be this outcry because we could choose which client we wanted to use. Its the same as GFWL and being forced to use some publishers bullshit that we dont want. And yes, Steam forces you to use their client too but hundreds of millions of people worldwide already do and it is a superb client and Id wager 95% of us would use it even if we didnt have to. Its not the same thing.

I think thats a legitimate beef.

They'd rather be meek and accept their fate, calm as Hindu cows, rather than actually say and do something that would require a shred of integrity, such as not buying the fucking game.

It's far easier to rationalize purchasing an AAA title than it is to simply say No.

I don't quite understand it personally, saying No has never been a problem to me, it's in fact, one of the easiest things I can do.

It's a skill far too many of us have been raised to do without.

I think I'll skip the BF3 release and see how far EA goes down this road. My money is on $15 recycled map packs are in BF3's future.

RO2 is looking better and better. They are really lucking out while this shit plays out.

If I want to play SC2, I click on the SC2 icon

Done and done :)
 
So annoying. It is only a matter of time before each publisher has their own online store and requires you to download and run their own client for all of their games.

Oh please! As if we don't have CPU cycles and RAM to spare and then some. These days there are enough CPU cycles and RAM to run the game, HD video or audio or whatever in the background, ect.
 
If you don't agree with what EA is doing, then don't buy the game. It's what I'm doing. Fuck off EA.
 
Valve forced steam down our throats and there was a huge outcry at the time. There are still users that hate valve for that. It will eventually pass and we will play games and have fun. Fucking get over it.
