Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Everything working great for me. No hitching or lockups and I have hyperthreading on.

Same, sounds like people maxing past their VRAM (pro-tip, if it shows capped and is stuttering, you are overloading it, the stuttering is from things being paged in/out of VRAM at that point) with too high settings for their system, and unstable OC's. Don't blame the game for your screw-ups, people :).

I just did repair game and it's applying the 48.1 MB patch for the UMPTEENTH GODDAMN TIME. Origin is such a piece of shit. If I ever get the chance to ditch it.. even if it means having to buy a different copy of BF3, I will do it at the first opportunity.

FUCK YOU AND YOUR STUPID BULLSHIT EA.

Loving the game so far. Still dicking around with settings to find a good balance between eye-candy and frame rates. So far it looks like any kind of filtering antiscropic/MSAA etc really kills the frame rates. I go from averaging 40-45 fps to 20-25 fps. Even if I turn everything to low except the filtering it drops to the 20-25 fps range. With the filtering off and going from low to ultra on everything else is only like a 5-8 fps drop from 40-45 to 35-40 range.

Ultra everything and some filtering, 3968x1200 resolution, windowed mode.

These are with the "auto" settings which is high for everything, light filtering; still 3968x1200, windowed:

can someone enlighten me how to re-install punkbuster? I had to re-install the game and now I can't stay in any server, it keeps saying kicked by administrator which is apparently a PB issue.

Yeah, cuz I'm the problem, not Origin/EA.

SMFBA

YES, you are.

I already explained this:

It's already been explained a million times, so stop yelling and actually read:

1) MOVE your BF3 folder.

2) Start a new download of BF3.

3) Once it starts downloading, CLOSE origin.

4) Move your BF3 folder from step 1 and copy/replace anything windows asks to when merging.

5) Launch Origin again.

6) Watch as Origin applies the patch, properly this time, after a minute.

7) Enjoy BF3.

it's in the bf3 install folder. you should see the PB installer in there

Never had less fun trying to play the best game ever. It's impossible to just start a game and play... and the few times I do get into a game the round soon ends and so it crashes and I'm back to trying to get the game to JUST FUCKING RUN. JUST FUCKING RUN WITHOUT MAKING ME KILL THE BF3.exe TEN TIMES IN A ROW FIRST... AND LET ME PLAY FOR MORE THAN ONE ROUND.

Origin is a piece of shit from what I've seen so far. Telling me my redemption codes are in use... re-applying the same patch over and over.

What a fucking cock-suck of a day. I knew there would be bugs and issues, but I didn't expect to be one of the worst examples while other people are just happily playing along.

Update your drivers?

Eh...I haven't had any particular issues with this game and Origin, but I'm starting to dislike Origin for a few reasons.

1) Can't resize it to make it smaller, and it doesn't have a "small mode" like Steam, which I really like

2) Basically doesn't do anything for BF3...Pops up every time I run BF3 and I have to minimize it

3) All of my platoon/friends/etc are through Battlelog so again, there's literally no purpose for Origin

It's an easy work-around, you can continue complaining or you can take 20 seconds to fix it yourself. Have fun, thanks for your input!

Disabling HT on my i7 920 removed 99% of the microstutter for me.

Loving this game so far.

I played 6 hours straight today to get the Mortar tube and it ROCKS! I have not had this much fin in a long time. The support you can give and the damage you can deal is incredible if you do it right. You can supress an entire area and cause mass chaos and confusion in the enemy if they are advancing or trying to hold an area.

The Mortar is going to require teamwork. Everyone on the team needs to spot or else you can't see anything on the Mortar map!

I am now an official Mortar Man!

Maybe scale and/or use fewer pictures next time. That was a lot of scrolling for very little effect.

I can run game maxed out with 1920x1080 res, using 11.10 p3 drivers, just fine with 6950 unlocked.

Texture - Ultra
Shadow - Ultra
Effects - Ultra
Mesh Quality - Ultra
Terrain Quality - Ultra
Terrain Decoration - Ultra
AA Defered - Off
AntAliasing Post - High
Motion Blur - On
Anisotropic Filter -16x
Ambient Occlusion -HBAO

I normally hate motion blur, but in this game it seems to get rid of the jaggies and so i really see no difference with aa on or off. Also i noticed a massive difference going from preview 2 drivers to 3.

Not sure what my average FPS is, never really cared, it runs pretty smooth.

See, those settings aren't "maxed out" - so telling people you can run "maxed out" with a single 6950 is spreading mis-information. By definition, maxed out means that all the settings would be at their maximum setting.

How is that not maxed out? Running FXAA and MSAA at the same time is just double dipping for no reason.

Didn't work. At least, not for my stability issues. For the time being it is not DLing the patch anymore. Let me crash it another time and see if it downloads the patch after that.

I'm actually surprised how fluidly the game runs in MP. I decided to dial down my res to 4800x900 and set everything to high. Getting 50-80 fps and it's very smooth. Regardless of FPS, it feels a lot smoother than beta. Gameplay is outstanding once you can get in game... my friends and I ditched the 'party join' feature since we could never get it working properly (how is it supposed to work anyway?) and decided to just follow each other.

The crashing is probably your overclock, if anything... since 99% are playing it without issue.

It won't work properly if someone doesn't have Flash updated to the latest version.

Running Post AA by itself does not get rid of all the jagged edges. A combination of both is what is needed to completely smooth out the image due to it's deferred lighting. MSAA does not work completely with these engines(parts of scene will get no AA applied at all), which is why Dice has put both in there and are both used for the Ultra preset.

Finally, someone else who understands...

I turned my OC off when I saw the suggestion. I just loaded successully and quit to test because it seems like the first connect after patching usually works. It crashed on load. Then I did a repair install showed it download the exact same 48.1MB patch again.

So your fix didn't work. YOU are now the problem. At least, that's what I'd say if I was a dickhead.

So once again, am I the only one seeing the weird mouse issue where you can only turn at a certain capped speed? It's like as if I were controlling a motorized turret or something, if i try to do a quick 180 I can only turn at one constant speed and it's wayyyy too slow. I've tweaked the sensitivity settings (both the mouse sensitivity and "soldier look sensitivity") to no avail, as well as trying the reset to defaults button, no dice.

Please tell me I'm not alone with this??? It's like playing with a gamepad joystick, except I'm using the mouse. o_O

Another HUUUUUUGE thing that I cannot fathom how DICE let this go, is that each vehicle type has unique sensitivity settings and there's no way to change them?? So if you use a nice high DPI gaming mouse, it's just wayyyyyy too high for the vehicles.

Oh, well I stand corrected then :)

Still don't see enough of an IQ difference to justify the performance loss for multiplayer, though.

Neither do I . I just run Post AA at high without MSAA and am extremely pleased. Mad props to Dice for giving us this choice.

Well, as exhausted as I am I couldn't resist at least playing for a bit. Launch campaign, says "Hit Enter to Start"...hit enter...nothing. Bah. :(

By the way, the "Enhanced Stereo" thing was to blame for my 5.1 issues. Turning that off instantly allowed rear audio. Strange that that would be enabled by default when I first ran the game using 5.1...

You can use Hi-Fi or Home Cinema, doesn't really seem to make a huge difference.

Check it hasn't turned itself back on next time you run the game. Keeps happening to me...

I don't have BF3 yet (waiting for 20% off or better sale) but I bought FIFA 12 from Origin recently and had the same issue with the patch for that game. The reason was because EA didn't set the game exe to run as admin but once I set it as admin the patch installed and never tried to install again. Maybe that will fix it for you.

I am pleased to say that BF3 runs very smoothly for me in multi. 1920x1200, High on most, Ultra on a few, except I turned AA off. 2500k, 8gig, and MSI 6850OC. Granted I only played one map, and there was only about 10 people on it. Im sure FPS will drag down when its loaded. Would love to see 6850 and 6850 SLI results to see if I want to spend another $160 and get another card.

Also the mouse issue is fixed for me. I can bind what I want, unlike the beta. AND I can zoom the mini map, something that is a must have for me! I just wish you could speed up the mouse movement for the tank like you did in BF2. Luckily I have a G500 and can raise the dpi on the fly. But this was an option in the controls in BF2, why not in BF3? Unless I am blind and just missed it.

Anyone else getting a motion blur lag/stutter in game? When I exit/enter vehicles or get shot I get a lag spike. Never happens in Singleplayer or Co-op.

How many fps can I expect with a GTX 570 Super OC @ 1920x1080 high options (not ultra?)
