Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Let me just chip in with this: the carbine firing the higher-grain, higher-calibre projectile ("ACW-R") does less damage per round than the 5.56mm it was designed to hit harder than or replace. Yet, when taking a similar-weight projectile with a similar propellant charge (7.62 RUS) the game designers make it hit do more damage per shot.

The 7.62x54R for the Russian weapons is considerably more powerful than either 6.8 SPC or 5.56. Its more on par with 7.92 and 30-06. I like realism, though the BF series was never meant to be realistic so the random "specs" of the weapons was a given.

As for the DLC guns being stronger, this is false. The MTAR recoils more than the M4A1 making it less accurate at range. It also reloads slower.

The AUG has a lower rate of fire than the FN2000 with damage that is essentially the same.

So after not playing for months and jumping back in, my SPM/K : D is nearly exactly the same as before, and I did not purchase premium. I'm not sure how it could be construed that premium gives you any kind of advantage in-game.

There is no way DICE could balance the 760239853 guns they added to BF3 if realism had to be considered.

While we're at it:

Why are are there no variable magnification scopes?
Why can't I dial in my DOPE?
Why can't I have a 3x flip magnifier with my holo or red dot?

This game is more realistic than Quake 3, but it doesn't try to be real life or even to the level of ARMA.

Volkum, I would like to propose a new label for this: Action Realism. Real enough to still be fun.

It looks like the marketing department got mixed up. Everywhere on the battlelog site indicates that this should be out today (Septermber 10th). If you go to download the expansion in Origin... It's "unreleased" until September 11th... Darn.

Why are are there no variable magnification scopes?

Because then you'd be spending more time rezeroing and focusing your optics than playing the game? :p

Though the point was that the DLC weapons are in fact not better than the original weapons.

I just finished downloading 2379.62MB patch and I see in my server filter options armored kill.

I guess its released 4 hours early?

as well mine. I actually tried to joining the server but it just kept saying loading... Guess It couldn't find the map on my drive yet.

Im also a tank whore. Its my favorite part of the game. About to break 1,000 kill in the abrams. Trying to get in top 5%. Right now I'm top 8%.

Are you talking about rankings in like bf3stats.com?

Anybody know what hour on 9/11 that the Armored Kill DLC goes live? Midnight is 1 hour 45 minutes from now.

DICE is attempting to tackle the cheating issue. Keyword: attempting. I am doubtful it will do any good.

The same triangle with exclamation point in the upper right corner of someone's profile now has "report possible cheat." It brings up a new window where you state soldier name, description of event, and a place to put the battlereport.

Honestly, I don't think it will work too well. I believe this is DICE's way to filter the "omg haxxorz" bitching into a separate email box from the regular report player profile link.

It's only 3,722.04 MB. I had to restart Origin to make it start downloading.

If you aren't a vehicle person there is much more to do in this expansion. So many vehicles and already bombed out buildings it's hard to stay alive so far as a foot soldier. Looks like a sniper's paradise though.

Depends on the map...

Alborz Mountain=no. Too many trees.
Bandahar Desert=no. 500+ meters between flags, everyone is in a vehicle.
Armored Shield=maybe
Death Valley=maybe, if you can see in the dark

brewing some coffee and downloading now, should be done in about 15 min. :)
have the day off so I'm going to geek-out all day long with AK.

Just played for an hour.... Wow, this is what BF3 should have been like since the beginning. Now I kind of feel like 64 players isn't enough :D

Not mine -

Stupid question: Can you fly jets on Alborz Mountain?

Yes, there are jets on three of the four maps...can't remember the name of the one that doesn't have jets....but it has helicopters. These larger maps really bring out the usefulness of the Z11/Little-Bird. I wasn't a fan of using them on the Vanilla maps but they a lot more fun to play in AK.

As was said before, these maps are what BF3 should have been all along...really bring a lot more life to the game. Especially when your hovering in a light heli and watching 6-7 tanks and tank destroyers going at it against eachother over rolling sand dunes...great stuff.

I've always heard 7.62 RUS more commonly used to refer to the x39, not the 54r. They clearly don't have a full-auto carbine chambered in x54r.

I'm at work and I don't get home for another 7 hrs ARRRGGGGHH!

Could someone please post a few screenshots? Please!!!

So I enjoy the new maps a lot. Only complaint is driving to other points can kinda be a pain, especially in Alborz Mountain

i spent an entire round there doing nothing but chasing the fight. i'd drive up the mountain just in time for my teammates to capture the points. drive down the mountain for the same thing. i was useless to my team, all while occupying a tank for what turned out to be nothing more than sight seeing :D

I've found my niche. Rush baby!

Oh that Gunship is a little OP. I was getting lots of revenge for every tank that killed me since 5am.

I dunno, it looks like I'm in the minority, but I'm really not enjoying it. Tank Superiority is insanely dumb, it's just a camp in hills with tanks and shoot across the map. With the maps being so big you can't really do shit on foot, it's just retarded.

Rush feels lopsided to the attackers.

Conquest is just a bunch of running in circles to get objectives and not really seeing a lot of action
