Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

OMG the positional audio with headphone mode is AWESOME! It is the best I've heard since CMSS with the X-Fi that I had in BF2. It really sounds like planes are behind you and too the left, ect. There is a definite difference between sounds above you, below you, behind you, in front. Even the ambient sounds are properly positioned. Very impressive.

System is an Ayre QB-9 USB DAC into Sennheiser HD600 headphones. That helps too!

Explain?

what kind of FPS are you guys getting on Caspian Border map? I'm getting like mid 20-30 fps but i'm playing on a 30" screen. I don't think i can afford another high end video card. I'm using GTX 480 atm. The only way around it for me is probably downgrade to a smaller screen and just play at 1080p.

Getting 20-50fps on the laptop on my sig running medium settings at 1280x720 on Caspian Border. Not bad at all, but this game is begging for more cpu power. I just had an amazing match at Caspian, racked in a ton of kills as a chopper gunner, bailed out near the end of the round, took out a sniper on the tower, proceeded to pick up his kit and get several SV98 headshots. Also had a classic BF moment earlier: was in a F18 headed at an enemy jet head on, guns blazing. Clipped the top of the Sukhoi and blew our shit up-we both bailed out in time, vaulted towards the ground, pulled chutes at the last minute and had an intense firefight out on the ground. Simply epic!

Just got back from a game with a 5 man squad. 2 people joined a 3 man at the same time. I could choose from spawning on all 4 and could see them on screen aswell as in the squad menu. But could I take a screenshot? No, there is no fucking screenshot button. Dumb.

Use something like FRAPS, or just hit "Printscreen", tab out, and paste it into Paint (or the image editing software of your choice)

I have fraps but didn't have it on at the time :(. Trying out afterburner. Print screen took a picture of battlelog, something I didn't expect. Tried to turn on fraps but alt tabbing crashed the game, not enough ram for that.

My friend on the other hand has 3 EVGA GTX 295's in SLI and he cannot even play the game. He CTD's everytime. He is working his way through the drivers trying to find a stable one but has not had any luck.

Wat? Isn't that like...6-way SLI? Didn't think that was possible.

Ok. Joystick support sucks in beta...

Using throttle boots me out of airplane, left rudder changes camera, right rudder actually inputs left rudder, elevator controls reversed, banking does not work. Re-mapping the controls in-game doesn't work.

I have a logitech extreme 3d pro.

I have used logitech profile software as well as xpadder. The game overrides both.

Is there a way to completely clear out joystick bindings for the game? Maybe edit a file or something? Anything? If I could just use xpadder to map my joystick to keyboard and mouse controls everything would be just fine...

Just had a hacker. Would teleport everyone on the enemy team including friendlies and place them in the air in a jet. Jet would glitch everyone and he would get kill points. Friendlies would get a suicide.

Haha.. this was in for a while and got fixed in BF:BC2. I guess they never applied the fix to the 2.5 engine.

I'm just saying the audio in this game is outstanding.

The Ayre is a high-end asynchronous USB digital to analog to converter for high-end music reproduction. The Sennheiser HD600s are some of the best headphones on the market, but certainly not the best.

PC game audio usually does not impress me all that much. Back in the day, before I had the Ayre, I would use a creative x-fi sound card and it had a function for headphones that would simulate surround sound, so you got a sense of where a sniper might be in relation to you. When set to headphone in game, BF3's audio is even better. When a plane fly's over it really sounds like it is a above me. When I turn around it sounds like it is behind me, ect. But the fidelity is better than it was on the x-fi.

In short, pretty sweet.

Afterburner works great (what I've been using for my screens), seems to have a fairly small memory footprint too. Less than 10 Mb if I am reading my task manager correctly (which I might not be...)

Just tried to get my junky old logitech attack 3 joystick working to mess around in the heli, but in game it's registering the x axis as always being pushed down to the left, causing me to spin left even as infantry. It's not showing the same behavior in the calibration software, and I used it semi recently in BC2 where it worked fine. All other buttons work fine on it. Any ideas?

I am getting really disappointed at Battle Log. When I try to join a server off a friend, it barely works. Then if I quit the game, the bf3.exe stays running in my background. I will kill the process and restart Origin, only to find the same thing happen again with not being able to join off a friend. I finally rebooted and that seemed to let me join off of him.

Thanks for this Blackstone... I'll give it a try. I'm jealous of your HD600s. Though I have a 116 inch screen with about $5000 worth of speakers and amps. Theater mode in BF3 is equally epic but I'm a big Headfi guy too. I can hear guys sneaking up on me instantly... as specially knifers.

ALL PC joysticks are not working with BF3 currently. It's a giant cluster fuck of fail in that regard. I don't know how people fly a jet with KB and Mouse.

50-60 here @ 1920x1200 (Ultra, shadows on medium)

What videocard(s) are you using?

I'm running a Radeon 6970 2gb at 1920x1080. I've lowered everything to medium/low. On Caspian I get 60 to 70fps until I use a 12x scope then I drop down to 20 to 30. That has to be a driver bug or something. The ballistic scope just rapes my frame rate on Caspian. On metro I'm always over 60fps.

My CPU is a 4.5ghz Core I5 2500K and I'm running the beta Cats (10.11 - PREVIEW 1). I am downloading and installing Preview 2 now to see if it improves things.

I'm very concerned about release, if you need two 6970s or GTX570s to play this game at 60FPS minimum that's fucked up. It does seem like an Nvidia optimized game though.

Count on it being a green game. I hope it is optimized a bit more too. My 480gtx soc gets slow at times. Should not happen with the settings that I run.

HOLY SHIT! The Preview 2 beta driver is insane! My framerate doubled. I'm getting 70+ all the time in caspian now with everything at ultra... That driver is MAGIC!

gonna have to try this one out, hopefully it'll do the same for me, but honestly, the 35-40ish FPS ive been getting feel like 60+ anyways, so it may be that it was displaying FPS improperly? not sure.

I think I would be a little skeptical of a driver that doubles your framerate...lol.

That much extra performance has to come from somewhere.

A quote from this thread gives me a little hope:

Hi we are aware users are experiencing issues with their joystick, including multiple joy stick support and have reported it to DICE. Thanks for addressing your concerns! ^CH

Anyone recognize the username chammad? Is he a DICE rep? Maybe he is from CH Products?

I was wondering that too. Playing Red Orchestra 2, when my framerate is in the 30's (which is quite often) I find it pretty much unplayable while when BF3 hovers between 30-40 (the majority of the match) it's completely playable.

It seems temporary... my fps is dropping now. No idea why. Maybe it uses all the Vram? Turning down Tessellation in CCC helped a lot too.

Caspian:
Code:
Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
  3459, 60000, 39, 106, 57.650

On main rig in sig, with everything at Ultra, HBAO on, AA at 4x, res 1680x1050, 61 players (when I joined), taken in the middle of some action at hilltop/checkpoint.

lol, how much time did you have with this new driver before posting?

couple hours... thats why I'm so confused. it is significantly faster but the driver benefit was overstated... reducing the tesselation made a big difference too.

FIXED

BTW, 11.10 v2 exactly the same....going back to 11.9 with cap1.

It looks like the mapping might be for a Xbox 360 controller - I have one but I haven't tried it yet.

So the beta "Ultra" runs just fine on my GTX 570 at 1920x1080, even on Caspian Border. Dunno the exact framerates I'm getting, but I imagine it's at least 40 or so.

Trying to get a plane/heli is super annoying, and most people just fuck up and crash them anyway, or just fly around in a circle not actually helping the team.

Does the unrealistic flight mechanics bothers you ? for me its a huge downer, the plane can only turn with the rudder or by banking 90degree and applying the elevator to the max. Geez even the terribad hawx 2 got it right... I was able to get my saitek x52 working, but the throttle in the game is not proportionnal, more like on/off
So far the the on foot experience has been great - I just unlocked the m240b and it transform enemies into swiss cheese :D

I'm getting pretty solid performance with the new Catalyst 11.10 Preview 2 driver. The retail should run even better.

I just hope the other Conquest maps are better.
