Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Naw, I played alot of BC2, and the tanks from BC2 are just like the ones in BF3. It's really not hard to shoot down choppers and planes.

Like comedy it's all a matter of timing. I would like the Jets to be a bit snappier though.

I just tried something to see if people can get around lanuching a separate web broswer just to play BF3.
It's redundant. I like the idea of Battelog, but not the idea of three separate programs running for on game.
If we can use the Origin broswer in-game, I think it would be better for people to adapt to it. It will also give us the ability to switch servers, from parties and chat with friends in-game.

Any news on this OffSpring? I think this would make the most sense right now. It's so simple to hotkey BL when needed to switch servers, chat etc.

Exactly my point, One of the main issues with BF2 and Heavy Metal in BFBC2

My issue with bc2 as a whole is still the linearity of the maps. Heavy metal included, and it looks like they went back to the same formula for firestorm.

You're being artificially forced into a narrow corridor. Or maybe tempted is a better description in firestorm case. forced is correct with heavy metal, its long and narrow.

I suspect it's being done for the sake of the netcode.

64 in a line = forced observed intensity. I'm not sure how to say what I'm thinking there without going into a rambling thing here.

The game dynamic would completely shift with initial spawn origins perpindicular to a line of points. Especially if there is a backdoor out of your base for flanking.

I asked one of the Battlelog Devs about how it launches, this is what I got in response.

http://twitter.com/#!/jbripley/status/118693141720207360

If all they are doing is launching a URL (when you click "Play" in Origin) then they'd just have to change that to somehow force it to launch inside of Origin instead of whatever the default computer browser is

I think the Origin broswer is better and more streamlined. It feels like an in-game broswer but with all the benefits and flexibility of a standalone web browser. It's a good compromise between the two.

I'll post it in the BL forums and see what kind of response I get from the community.
BF3 can start with a splash screen and the Origin browser automatically takes us to BL. Done.
Everything in one place. This could also help prevent DNS attacks because the browser is now protected "somewhat" by Origin.

Any word on fixing the squad issue? That has been the most annoying thing to date. I can't play with my friends unless I somehow get really lucky. If the game launches like that, and offers no mods to boot. Well, might have to sell my pc and start making porn. You know, good to have hobbies and all that.

Top 10 Battlefield 3 Open Beta issues and how we are addressing them

BY: HBrun POSTED: Oct 06, 2011, 05:04PM

We're more than half way through the open beta and thrilled to see so many people still enjoying the game while continuing to give us great feedback. As part of our dedication to showing you how your feedback is directly affecting and improving Battlefield 3, here are the latest Top-Ten Community Issues that we're addressing.

1. Squad issues: Cannot play with friends within same squad, squads get split up onto opposite teams, etc.
There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (If team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad and changing squads once in game.

2. Regarding additional Open Beta content and fixes/patches for consoles, including PlayStation 3 issues with chat and party systems
While we would like to patch the Open Beta, DICE is currently focusing its available resources on polishing the retail game.

3. Will DICE have enough time to iron out everything by release?
Please see General Manager Karl Magnus Troedsson's blog post regarding this question.

4. Can we have ability to change settings/options before deployment into match on PC?
The ability to modify your settings via the deploy screen has been added into the retail game.

5. Issues with terrain stability and "falling into the map" on Operation Métro
This has been fixed for the beta via a server side update.

6. Kill cam sometimes zooms out too far or outside the map
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

7. A bug that sometimes keeps some players from being able to sprint
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

8. Screen flickering/stuttering. Blue screen remains after respawn. Game locks up after deploying C4 (360)
This has been fixed for the launch of the retail game.

9. Downed bodies appear to be dead, but are not
The DICE team has been looking into this issue - which is caused by a combination of incidents in a confined area - and are working hard to address the issue for the launch of the retail game.

10. Why is the hit detection seemingly different from Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
The netcode is one of the many things that we are testing as part of the Open Beta and is not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates and has heard the feedback you've provided and is further optimizing online play.

I am having CTD issues non stop on Caspian Border, I can not seem to complete a map when I'm doing good :(

Or is it that everyone is getting pissed off at me for laying my mines all over the place? :D

Sounds like an issue with your rig. I have not had 1 CTD since the beginning of the beta and only 2 or 3 server disconnects.

My friend on the other hand has 3 EVGA GTX 295's in SLI and he cannot even play the game. He CTD's everytime. He is working his way through the drivers trying to find a stable one but has not had any luck.

Is there anyone else that's getting a little sick and tired of the superfluous radio chatter? I realize that some of the radio announcements are in fact useful, however, I find most of it not so much. A lot of it in my opinion is bordering on or exceedingly asinine. Mostly the US frat boy-esque banter. It would be nice if there was an option to bring the radio chatter down to a minimum. This of course would be at the discretion of the individual, but I think this would make for a more serious and let's say, proper experience.

Yes, very much so. The endless and worthless repeating radio chatter is annoying as hell. BC2 was much better in this respect.

Agreed.

I'm probably the only person in the world who actually prefers the focused infantry combat of Metro too lol (mostly because I've always loved the heli but it's absolutely worthless on Caspian especially without countermeasures unlocked), but that map is certainly nothing special either.

I'm also constantly getting disconnected from every Caspian Border server I join.

This game went from something I was pretty interested in before the Beta but wasn't going to buy until it hit Steam to something I'm fine with skipping entirely.

You are not alone. I don't like Caspian at all. It is way too large and boring fields for pure FPS types like myself. Metro is way better.

On another note, anyone having issues telling the two teams apart? Most of the time the soldier models on either side look very similar and the map is super tiny to see where your friendlies are. Is there a way to open up a larger map?

I am used to playing hardcore with friendly fire on in BC2 and in BF3 seems like it will fail in that same setup.

To those of you who were helicopter pilots in BF2, being totally honest, is the helicopter in this just nowhere near as fun to pilot? In addition to how weak it is as I've already pointed out, it just seems a lot slower and the rockets don't seem to go where you're aiming with the reticule at all. They seem to do very little damage as well.

Also, and I don't know if this is lag or what (I'm playing on 50 ping severs though) but more often then not I don't see the smoke trails of the missiles and sometimes even where they hit which makes it ridiculously hard to figure out how I need to adjust my aim considering the rockets often don't go anywhere near where the reticule is.

Am I the only one experiencing this stuff? I mean am I crazy or is this thing just not as good as it was in BF2?

While I'm no game developer, the layout most likely doesn't matter as far as net ode is concerned. All objects in game are tracked by their x,y (and possibly z) coordinates, meaning the game tracks where your at based on a vertical and horizontal grid (x,y) and z would be an additional grid based on depth (though my axis assignments may be off the general idea still stands). The netcode, while shitty is still an impressive thing. Everytime you fire a bullet, an object is created, tracked, and eliminated on impact triggering animations or terrain decal placement which is then tracked till it's duration ends. I know this from a bug I saw on metro, bullet sprays and effects were freezing in the air and you could visibly make out the bullets...looked cool.

Now imagine 64 players, tanks, jets, and vehicles all being tracked and then add in the missiles and bullets being fired...that's a shit ton of objects that are being created and destroyed and animation triggers and decal spawns going on...lots of shit that needs to be sent back and forth by server and client.

What I dislike is the server side hit detection and the lag from when the server sees it and when the client receives the information. Many times where I'm behind cover (not talking about the metro rock) and still end up dying from a split second ago when I was in the open.

Definitely find the helo and it's aiming system to be subpar/unintuitive. Also it's handling seems like the game doesn't have inertia coded in...soon as I let off the throttle it seems like I go directly into hover regardless of the helos angle of attack.

Yup, have noticed this too. Just the way it moves all around is nowhere near as satisfying really.

Very bummed about it as the heli was the thing I was most looking forward to in multiplayer and its just been a huge disappointment :(.

Does anyone know if there will be server options for a hardcore mode and no kill-cam mode like they have in BC2?

I like getting up close and raping objectives but it sucks when you kill a bunch of people and they know exactly where you are with that stupid kill-cam.

If they don't they'll have one pissed off geek in me...I'll be raging all over the place of they don't have either of those options...

It's called change positions. Hardcore mode is so boring please don't play that again. That honestly ruined my BC2 experience. Assholes with hardcore servers that didn't have hardcore in the title so I would have to leave then deal with the shitty ass server browser again to find a new game. Most of the hardcore players are pretty terrible at the game as well.

That's the same exact feeling I get. Jets are in the game just as fan-wank service, not because they actually serve a gameplay purpose.

I'm sure that's partly because not many people have unlocked bombs yet (seriously, we've reached the point where bombs are an unlock? And coaxial machine guns on the tanks? I can see extra weapon stuff, but core parts of the vehicle are unlocks - what's next, wheels?). I'm sure once bombs (and TV missiles, if they have them) are unlocked, the jets will be more involved. Of course, remembering the bomb-fests in BF2, maybe it's better the way it is - let the jet people play their own game (which they did anyway in BF2) while we play the real game on the ground.

11.9 with cap 1 vs 11.10 preview with cap1? performance wise? anyone tested?

Im using 11.8 and gettin 30-40fps on my triple eyefinity dell u2410 portraits with one ausus 6970 2gb. (medium settings for the most part)

11.9s wont install at all and 11.10s give me 15-25 fps and jittery performance. Once I blew out the 11.10s and put 11.8 back up everything got nice and smooth again.

Why you people like that terrible conquest mode I'll never understand. I have the same sentiment as the post above me. Hopefully they have a rush map with 1 apache per side and NO jets on release day, and servers actually play it.

I don't think you're trolling, so have you ever considered that a lot of people who like the battlefield series (possibly even the majority) enjoy the game differently than you? I hope you get your non-HC, no vehicle rush map server, but don't tell the rest of us what we should or shouldn't be playing.

Laugh. HC mode forces you to use strategy and is much more realistic. All I see in Caspian Border in BF3 is a bunch of noobs running around like chickens with their heads cut off.

About as entertaining as watching paint dry.

anyone know anything about parachutes? in beta i've jumped outta buildings and hit space for it (like in bc2) but still take damage...hows the chutes work?

=[ i like having more control of chutes... like spawning from air... deploying as late as possible to prevent getting shot out of the sky

I agree to a point with you. Many players dont go for objectives. Its like a very few.. Ive been on some great servers, but last night it was ridiculous. It all depends on which server you play. Once squads are fixed, and people can communicate through voice, im sure it will get better.

other than that, I love it.

I am dominating with the C4. I have taken out so many tanks i lost count. Caspian Border is a great map to sneak up on tanks if you are into doing that.

You are confusing HC mode with rush mode. Ok realistic. Realistic isn't fun at all though. (throw in obligatory FOR ME comment so people don't get their panties in a bunch)

If you are in the tank, you can hear the enemy guy say "setting C4 now" or something like that. That's your clue to get out and run away, but you have to listen for it. Happened to me twice last night - first time I didn't know what was happening, and second time I was able to run away.

I enjoy HC loads more. No crosshairs so you can't hip spray everything. Bullets actually hurt some. And it tends to slow the game down and make people think. At least a little. No little magic glowing triangles over peoples heads.

A thinking enemy is a harder enemy is more satisfying to gut when you out think him.

OMG the positional audio with headphone mode is AWESOME! It is the best I've heard since CMSS with the X-Fi that I had in BF2. It really sounds like planes are behind you and too the left, ect. There is a definite difference between sounds above you, below you, behind you, in front. Even the ambient sounds are properly positioned. Very impressive.

System is an Ayre QB-9 USB DAC into Sennheiser HD600 headphones. That helps too!
