Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

I hope they don't ruin metro by putting more than 1-2 vehicles. First battlefield experience of mine that actually had game-play involving teamwork and strategy.

Staying far away from pre-ordering since I have a bad feeling it's going to be impossible to find a server playing non-hardcore good Rush maps.

Why you people like that terrible conquest mode I'll never understand. I have the same sentiment as the person above me.

I could say the same thing about the Terrible game mode Rush. Worst gameplay ever

Yeah, I much prefer the Rush mode. I feel like some kind of crazy person because everyone's all 'OMG CASPIAN BORDER CONQUEST YAY!" and to me it just feels like an unfocused mess of a game type. I keep playing it to try and figure out what's so enjoyable about it and so far it's making me hate the game.

I had way more fun with Operation Metro.

In all honesty this game is BF2 with a coat of new paint and some borrowed ideas from Bad Company 2. But is it a true sequel to BF2? I don't think so and frankly that's a good thing.

The fact that DICE is making BF3's lead platform the PC is probably one of the best things about it. I'm so glad they didn't just make it a generic console port and you all know they could have..

I have a good feeling that the rest of the maps are better and that come the 25th we will be pleasantly surprised. I'm also excited for the single player honestly , I realize this game's focus is MP but if the single player is anywhere near as intense as the videos make it seem I'm all on board.

Frankly after how disappointing Rage was/is BF3 is still my 2nd most wanted game this year (behind Skyrim). Metro wasn't the best way to release the beta but at least I've had fun playing this. And I didn't have to spend 3 days to get it to run well... (COUGH Id COUGH).

I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Joystiq said pretty much the same thing, the general gist being it's a poor man's CoD.

DICE just isn't any good at singleplayer. Mirror's Edge floated by on an amazing concept and great gameplay. The structure of the singleplayer was pretty bad, honestly. BC2's singleplayer was a joke.

Frankly (no offense to you) Kotaku can suck a fat dick. They are probably one of the most negative gaming sites on the net. They love to take time out to write articles that pan games before release. Joystiq however does carry some credibility with me so we'll see.

Since I'm buying BF3 mostly for the MP anyway the single player is the icing on the cake. If it sucks ..oh well but I'll let myself be the judge and not some jaded gaming site.

For the most part I agree, Kotaku is a bit shit. I just linked to that one because they pull no punches right in the title. The Joystiq article has similar complaints though, and I too hold their opinion in higher regard.

I get a lukewarm impression from a few of the other sites recent previews too, but in something that's pretty standard for the games "journalism" industry, they don't really come out and say what they're really feeling. It's all veiled criticism and hints in previews, which is why while Kotaku can go a little too far I appreciate that they're willing to just come right out and say "Hey, this singleplayer kind of sucks!".

Reading the Kotaku article though, their complaints make a lot of sense. Especially this bit:

As I played, I kept getting annoyed by something that often happens to me in games where I have an AI-controlled squad—my team is immaculately organized and scripted, but I never know quite where to go. I regularly found myself ahead of where I was "supposed" to be, and kinda felt like the guy who had showed up to filming without studying his blocking or his lines.

Just watching the singleplayer videos you can see this is going to be the case. They're so heavily scripted at times they seem even worse than CoD.

This also sounds terrible:
Yep, there are totally civilians here—but don't think that DICE has placed unarmed innocents in the game in a meaningful way. They're untouchable background objects, and bullets pass right through them.

If you're not going to have the balls to let these people be collateral damage, don't put them in the game dammit!. Nothing kills immersion more for me than invincible bystanders.

That's an understandable point of view. I've personally given up on gaming journalists , I don't read reviews anymore .. I don't agree with how most are done. The amount of bought and sold "reviews" is truly sad , editors so worried about there jobs they will hold off on harsh (truthful) words so they don't piss off advertisers.

I really appreciate the honest opinion of my friends when it comes to games and the general census on forums like these. When someone makes a post on a forum describing there experience with the game and there thoughts on it .. you can directly reply to that and ask questions about there experience and make a better informed decision. With gaming journalists you get a very static final conclusion that can't be challenged or questioned in any way.

Ever since I stopped worrying about what site A or site B said about a game I've found myself trying out games I didn't even think I would like and ended up loving them simply from gathering opinions on it and coming to my own conclusion.

Don't get entangled in PC reviews. There hasn't been many PC "focused" games that were reviewed received great ratings over the years.
If this was a console exclusive, it would be a technical marvel. On PC, the're always lofty exceptions that lowers the score.
So long as the person enjoys it that's fine, most of us are judging this game on multiplayer. If that is dull then we truly have an issue.
Hard Reset got rave reviews in the community but only scored a 72 with reviewers. It would have been in the mid-80's if it was a console exclusive.

I had that feeling too until this morning when I saw videos of the 2 new maps.

Operation Firestorm is another epic troll by DICE (just like Caspian Border). The map is fucking HUGE, but all 5 flags are 100m or less from each other and the huge map space is just for jets and choppers to fly around in. WHAT THE FUCK.

Grand Bazaar is an infantry focused map, but in my opinion it actually looks like the funnest map so far.

So that's 1 out 4 maps I'm interested in so far, and there's only 9 maps in the game (another head-scratcher in my opinion). Seriously, 9 maps? What in the fuck is that all about?

Agreed completely. This is one of three forums I go to to try and get a feel for "the man on the street's" opinion.

Right now I'm trying to find a reason to buy this game, and I was curious how the singleplayer turned out and saw that Kotaku article. Some of the things he mentions aren't really just a matter of opinion so I was immediately turned off.

I don't like QTE events, and this has them. I fucking hate it when bystanders are invincible, and that's here too. I detest the scripted nature of CoD and it's apparent that's what this is.

A few months ago I was super excited about this game but after the beta I doubt I'm even going to buy it. Kind of disappointed as it was one of the main reasons I bought my new video card, but hey what can you do?

Nah, it wasn't the only game I bought it for. Red Orchestra 2 was as well. Which of course was bugged out and ran like shit, haha. Haven't tried that with the new patch though, here's hoping the issues are actually fixed finally.

Rage was another big one but that doesn't seem to have lived up to expectations either. Also The Witcher 2.

I play a lot of games though, I'd never buy a card for just one title. And really a lot of times some of the best games are ones that weren't really on my radar. Rarely are those ones graphical powerhouses, but you never know.

Hey, I know how you feel. There were only two games I looked forward to this year.
Crysis 2 and BF3. C2 already disappointed me so I hope BF3 doesn't.
I finished Batman AA last month, so AC is on my radar since they are taking special with the PC version.

DICE actually said they will do the COD thing in the SP, just to show they can do it better.
This is why I wasn't looking forward to it along with many others.

Yeah, that's another one I'm very much looking forward to, Arkham City. Looks amazing. I think my GOTY is going to be between Dark Souls, Arkham City, Uncharted 3, and Skyward Sword.

I was also cautiously optimistic about Crysis 2 but didn't enjoy the MP demo at all and what little I played of the singleplayer did nothing for me so I haven't even tried it yet.

Forgot how much fun it is to play on a good team. Get a pair of tanks together, with gunners, and just roll through the map. Fun just blowing up buildings also. I'm really not looking forward to re-unlocking everything though.

Yup.

If not for the wide open area for jets to fly, it almost looks about the size of a BC2 map in terms of the flags being clustered so close together.

I would rather have them a lil closer together to be honest. On BC2, Heavy metal Kinda sucked when the Flags were so far from each other, that by the time you got to 1 flag, it was already heavily taken over, and they need help at another flag.

To me this is a great thing they did. i REALLY hated the flags being so far apart. That was one of my main beefs with a few of the BF2 maps.

See, this to me just reinforces the feeling I get that the air combat is it's own separate thing that really has very little impact on what's happening on the ground.

Most of that map is there just for jets to have dogfights with each other which in the long run contributes nothing to either team's cause.

Well it would be nice to have a balance between the two variations on the maps which are included, because you know....some people do like to play on large sprawling maps.

True. In the retail release, people will be able to unlock jet bombs and infantry will be able to laser targets.
So it will come together much better then, but I still have the same concerns.

Also is 64 enough? These huge maps and limited vehicles could demand lots of walking without seeing anyone, or defending a flag and no one to defend it from.
This why I play rush a lot because everyone has to meet at the same spot, which results in chaos. I'm hoping we have mixed servers.

Well have you played any of the other 64 player maps to know if they are spread out like you like?

It's beta.....you cannot base your decision on open Beta. Even dice said "it's beta and its a very early copy of the game and we will not patch it, its called open beta for a reason"

So you think that whilst we are playing the beta they are completely redesigning maps, even maps like operation firestorm which aren't in the beta and which despite being one of the largest maps still suffers from clustering of flags? Yeah okay. You obviously have not tested a lot of betas in your time.

Considering how much Community Feedback they are taking, Yes I expect them to fix the lil issues people have.

Open Beta is Open Beta....if you expect a perfect 100% smooth game, then you pumped yourself up for nothing.

Iv played in many closed/open Beta's. And very Rarely is the beta the same as the final Retail product (FFXIV is the only one I remember which was the exact same).

And this is coming from someone who was beta testing Counter-strike beta 1-4 and had beta servers up and running.

Well your experience is the complete opposite of mine, because nearly every beta I have participated in has seen no significant changes from the retail release apart from bug squashing and tweaking. And so far we have seen 3 conquest maps all exhibiting the same design philosophy, I doubt its going to be any different for the remaining 6.

Hmmm Metro (rush) Caspan Border (CQ).

Which 3 CQ maps have you played in this Open Beta?

That's the same exact feeling I get. Jets are in the game just as fan-wank service, not because they actually serve a gameplay purpose.

I am very disappointed with the way multiplayer is turning out. I thought for sure since Lars Gustavsson is the multiplayer lead for the game that it would be heading back into the right direction. I thought wrong. It honestly feels like Bad Company 2.5. Real Battlefield is dead.

the checkpoints are spread apart just fine. I dont want to play for 30 minutes and see 2 people. The jets NEED the extra area to be able to play.

Exactly my point, One of the main issues with BF2 and Heavy Metal in BFBC2

You don't have to play a map just to get a feel for it. We got videos of developer walkthroughs on 2 new maps this morning. And both maps are more of the same of what we've seen already.

/facepalm

If you guys are that concerned about how the game will play out, just cancel your pre-order.....I mean you guys already made your decision from playing 2 maps on Open Beta, and watching Videos.

From the dev commentary it seems like they were going for a more rock paper scissors type approach.

The jets counter helis which counter tanks.

Also there are jet unlocks which will likely unlock more ground firepower. Spotting, and I guess SOFLAM designation?, actually makes it easier for jets to identify and target ground troops watch people know how to use it.

I'm hoping flags in the maps predominantly have structures around them. This means infantry is critical in actually getting in there to cap, vehicles would serve as support.

In the beta it's probably the worst balanced game of rock/paper/scissors I've ever seen then.

A jet can take a heli down with literally one second of concentrated fire. That's not an exaggeration, I've had it happen many, many times. A heli has to fire a ton of rockets to take out a tank and the rockets don't actually go where you reticule is, so it takes forever to get a feel where your rockets are actually going to land which makes firing on a tank extremely difficult.

The jet is also very fast and highly maneuverable, while the heli is slow and takes a lot of skill to pilot without crashing. On top of this, it's not too hard for a jet to fly away from stinger missiles and AA placements thanks to it's speed, while the heli is too slow to outmaneuver either.

Helicopters are worthless unless no one on the other team is piloting a jet, has stinger missiles, or is using an AA placement. Then they dominate, but only if there isn't a single person on the other team making use of any one of the many ways to easily cripple a heli and make it entirely worthless.

WHA? The jets are slow as hell IMO, and I could shoot them down easily with a Tank....

It's funny you say the jets are slow as hell because they're like five times faster than the heli. Piloting the heli feels like wading through jello, honestly.

And if you're easily shooting down jets with the tank you're either the best tank player ever or you're playing against some of the worst pilots known to man.

A tank should never get an easy shot on a jet, that's just ridiculous.

Naw, I played alot of BC2, and the tanks from BC2 are just like the ones in BF3. It's really not hard to shoot down choppers and planes.

It is if you're playing against people who know how to pilot. Hell, all they have to do is stay above a certain point and you can't even get a shell on them.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here exactly anyway. That in this hypothetical game of rock/paper/scissors the tank beats all? That's even worse.

So cool, you're shooting down tons of jets because you're tankmaster numero uno. Must be ridiculously easy to shoot down choppers then because they're WAY slower and nowhere near as maneuverable. Which just makes my argument that helis are garbage in this game even more damning.

My point is the Jets are slow as fuck. The jets in BF2 were alot faster then the current ones.

The Jets IMO are perfect for this game, they arent overpowered like they were in BF2, and will be alot easier to take down.

Rock/paper/scissors, Isn't that how most military wars end up? who has the best items for the best scenerio/situation?
