Battlefield 2042

Skin creation is done by the art team, not software engineers. The bugs will be fixed at the same rate with or without new skins.
resources spent are still resources and time spent. People aways dismiss that yet here we are.

focus all of it matters.

*how much more evidence do you people need that despite being different teams it still has a direct impact on the entire dev.

They're only removing the skins temporarily. Essentially to dupe people into continuing to buy the game while it is new, then introduce them later down the road.

We're still getting crap out of Fallout like this:

if you care about this you are part of the problem.

fix broken game mechanics over skins.

The art design is a key gameplay feature. As someone else said, bugs are only half the problem. The other half is intentional design decisions. Bad art design, lack of server browser, operators, balancing. All intentional.

Because of the lore, I expected a gritty atmosphere...but the BF2042 tv commercial tells you that they are going for personalities over grunt soldiers.
The lore of the game doesn't connect with the design. I'll never play 2042 again. Portal will have to be re-released with the traditional design and mechanics before I buy another DICE/Frostbite game.

The marketing for this game tells you all you need to know. It's basically COD/Fortnite. It doesn't treat itself seriously at all, and they love showing off their shitty specialists.

I agree. The push for "personality" driven characters makes zero sense in a large scale battle when you see a dozen of the same person running around. It'd make more sense in a 5v5 or something smaller.

I am not fond of the specialist over class design, especially when most of the specialists are useless. It seems like illogical design allowing all specialists access to all weapons/gadgets making them not so special.

Rewatch the launch trailer, the entire trailer featured grunt soldiers, not everyone fighting was a specialist. False advertising.

If they had to go with the specialist design and there was one specialist per squad, but no duplicate specialist on a single team, it would be more tolerable the current game.

I do not get it what is so wrong about specialists?
They are not what battlefield has always been, they basically copied COD's operators. The Battlefield series has been more "realistic" with the game being based on 2 sides in conflict on a (surprise surprise) battlefield.

I'm having a lot of fun with the Infected Portal mode. It's a simple 64 infected vs. 64 defenders type mode. The infected are all Sundance characters so they can attack from the ground or air. The defenders generally stick together at high points on the map (towers, roofs, bridges, etc...). So you have this huge group of defenders firing away at a ton of infected rushing at them from all angles. Once you get knifed by an infected, you become infected yourself. It's kind of imbalanced though. Even though the infected only have knives, they always manage to break through and overcome the defense.

I played BF1 , bc2, bf4 , bf 2142 a lot. And I still see no problem with specialists.

Given how fast and far player counts have dropped, it would seem you are in the minority, but hey, at least a minority of players like yourself dont see anything wrong with bf2042 though right?

Have fun playing a dead game in a month.

Agreed. I've played every Battlefield game so far and 2042 is the worst of them in almost every respect. It doesn't feel like Battlefield anymore. It reminds me of Call of Duty without doing anything that CoD does well.

Why assume specialists are the reason player count is dropping? I don't think specialists are one of them. People knew what they were getting from the beta regarding specialists. Some reason you guys think things from mega sucessful games are killing this one, lol. no, the fact that this is incomplete and buggy/runs like ass is why.

side note, today I noticed if you look at the sprincklers the right way, you see a rainbow. Latest patch also added alot of lighting to buildings. Fighting for the sky scrapers on kaleidoscope is pretty fun, the interior gun fights are cool. The interiors seem to have gotten some more detail I think. I'll be satisifed with this game once they fix the rubber banding. its better than it was but still. also, if I could get some more frames, that would be nice

I think it's losing players because D) All of the above. I've heard lots of feedback from many longtime BF players who are unhappy with the specialists. No one seems happy with the pre-release state the game was released in. Just another fumble by dice/EA it seems.

I guess specialists are not the main reason.

Specialists are just the most obvious sign/symptom that 2042 isn't really battlefield anymore, it's a mere shadow of what they should of created.

I don't like them, but that's not really my main issue with the game. It doesn't feel like Battlefield. The weapons don't feel good, the hit box detection is worse than ever (which was never Battlefield's strong suit anyway), the menus are atrocious, map design sucks, and frankly, the visuals from what I've played are not very good in a lot of cases. Character models aren't great. Weapon models are. But the map visuals are really bad in the urban areas anyway. Weapon customization is there, but the menus make it a horrendous experience. Outside of the potential player counts I didn't like anything about the game.

Ray traced ambient occlusion is also bullshit. 5% (if I'm being generous) uplift in graphics quality for a 50% performance hit. It really doesn't make much sense.

imo ray tracing effects in a fast paced multiplayer game never make much sense anyway. Ok for single player i suppose but until the performance hit is negligable it's just a frame rate vampire.

I wouldn't call BF, historically, super fast paced. It's not like it's COD where you've got milliseconds. I still remember loving the raytraced reflections in BF5 because I could be prone near water, and use the water almost like a mirror to see what was going on. However, because of the frostbite engine issues with DX12 at that time, I had eventually just turn it off because of the stuttering, and the initial implementation of DLSS was garbage.

Anyone have any key registration issues? Such as not being able to pull out your pistol or secondary item randomly once and a while. Like the game doesn't recognize your presses, so freaking annoying.

exiting a vehicle, yes. Otherwise, no. The vehicle fix, for me, is use your gadget or specialist skill, then switch to your weapon.

Yes happens to me occasionally (say once in every 10 rounds or so).

Summary of 2042 development:

  • Developers started leaving during the release of BFV, as EA wanted to compete against other games (BRs and normal shooters) and their concepts internally never given a look at.
  • EA basically gave the memo of "copy what's popular".
  • Classes scrapped early 2020.
  • WFH with cross-gen was a massive pain with 5 different platforms with hardware being shared remotely.
  • Game shifted into a BF title April-August 2020 from the BR (so basically about 18 months of development time) with 128p & specialists.
  • The games original concept got shifted into Hazard Zone.
  • August 2020 is when production really got started and concepts got solidfied. So basically 1 year and 3 months of true production.
  • The leaked trailer (the epilepsy one) was basically early in production in early 2021 and show to QA in early 2021 in its finished form. Used BF3/BF4 assets.
  • "Ahead of scheudle" was a giant fib. Past & current DICE devs say it was based on baseless predictions.
  • In March 2021 DICE was overwhelmed and admitted they need help from others. But it wasn't easy again due to engine issues with lack of experience.#
  • Later on in the months it became obvious so many issues like UI where creeping up and causing many issues.
  • Technical test came and ofc was unstable and used Orbital as mentioned in the video was the concept map. And made clear the game was way behind schedule. And Tom was given indications then that BF 2042 was in a troubled state and stressed working environment (not due to crunch but more management issues etc).
  • Tom then got word that the beta & launch was going to be delayed but only a few hours later it was clear the delay was weeks and not months.
  • And ofc the last stretch where the beta was basically an alpha and the launch being a launch.
  • In summary vast majority of development issues was a massive lack of time, could've benefitted of an extra year or so in an era where delays of 3-6 months where common. And since so many people have left over development time the studio DICE is basically so different now it needs renaming to reflect reality.
  • Many projects where scrapped including a BC3 which EA thoguht wouldn't sell for some reason.
The future:

  • The next BF shooter is being scoped as a hero shooter.
  • Most interestingly it may be bands of specialists/heroes fighting against each other and not armies, even further away from BF 2042.
  • The "connected unvierse" is basically adding depth to the specialists.
  • A BR will come in the near future, not next 6 months but vague timeframe.
  • That said things have not absolutely set in stone and DICE developers have been hard at work trying to fix the game to be good as possible (though personally in my eyes the game has fundamental issues of the gameplay core that can't mesh well with say the maps, least that's my opinion) and listening to the community.

I already knew the engine was their main issue. It's hard to create with. It's the Titanic. Only the original devs know how to weld it because they were building the engine and designing at the same time. The same was for the CryEngine, only Crytek knew how to get the most out of it.

The engine can't do BR because it can't do all of the customization and interaction required. It's great at massive scale environments, not massive scale custom players. The engine chokes with 128 players, the original devs said so.

Sounds like a broken record from me but any game using the Frostbite engine moving forward will fail.

I guess we can officially call Battlefield dead at this point.

My prediction is as follows:

There was only a 2 year gap between BF3 and BF4...with that in mind, we will see a proper BF6 in 2-3 years using similar assets as 2042 (lore setting, etc). but it will have more of a traditional battlefield feel: condensed/better thought out maps, some naval combat, no specialists (or a tweak on the concept such as special abilities rather than being tied to a cheesy character) and maybe even a campaign, etc etc.

BF3 was considered a console launch window game, and BF4 built upon that. I'm thinking 2042 can be considered a console launch window game and BF6 will build upon it.

Just my prediction...

Given their comments? I highly doubt that. I highly doubt we will see a real BF for a very long time. They are going to use the brand name to shovel out crap. At best they may eventually fix 2042/Portal and re-release it free with live service F2P style components.

Yeah I think that ship has sailed for AAA gaming. Then got torpedoed while sailing out of port.

Best case scenario is to hope for an indie developer to put out a decent enough game or two before they become big and start getting AAA studio money.

I played BF1 , bc2, bf4 , bf 2142 a lot. And I still see no problem with specialists.
You don't see the problem with a squad of elderly women running around, then an enemy looking identical to your 3 other elderly women runs in and shoots you all. As your glitching body is twitching on the ground, along with three other clones, you see another friendly elderly woman shoot the opponent elderly woman, and proceed to revive the elderly female teammates that aren't clipping into a wall. I mean what's to not enjoy about that? (And yes this scenario happened at least once a night as I fully embraced the sink cost fallacy and tried to get some enjoyment out of this joke of a game.)

The solution to this is to add Santa Claus characters, demon heads, Batman Jokers, and 13 year olds with capes. Then no one will look the same.
