Battlefield 2042

FWIW, their revenue sharing agreement isn't 30%
It's still 30%, however once you pass a certain volume of sales (10mil) it drops to 25% (and after you pass 50mil it drops to 20%).
So for indie devs, or the vast majority of devs tbh, its effectively 30%.

I know for a fact EA and Valve have a one-off, sweetheart deal that was negotiated as part of EA bringing their games over.

But whatever, buy at whichever store that's most convenient.

That's actually interesting, because if I remember correctly part of the ongoing lawsuit against apple by content providers is that that apple allegedly gives some companies (like netflix) much better revenue sharing % than everyone else, which might be illegal in some countries.

Battlefield Portal looks awesome, hope they have naval combat from BF1942 (wishful thinking).

That wouldn't be a huge surprise. I just prefer the highest amount of my purchase price go to the devs directly.

I've said similar in the past but have zero proof. Wouldn't amaze me in the slightest. Fact is a lot of AAA developers are moving away from Steam. EA games sell a lot. Valve taking a much smaller cut for a company that sells many games makes sense. Lower the fees enough and EA's margins aren't so bad. Bigger selling base means net gains for both EA and Valve.

I can see Valve trying to work with Ubisoft in the future to bring back their games.

Steam's cut must be pretty small.

side note. reinstalled BF1, having a good time. Doesn't feel as dated as BF4.

I actually really enjoyed the smoother play of BF1. I just hate the vehicle spawn system and op aircraft. The game itself is beautiful.

Unless something changed recently, EA games on Steam simply start up the Origin Client with a linked account. You will still need original installed and running to play this game.
Some newer games are using a mini client that runs in the background that handles all the Origin stuff, while some others have even integrated the Origin account handling into the game itself without the need for an additional program running. You'll have to look at the detail for each game to know which approach is being used. I don't think we know yet how it will be handled in this game. It says "Origin client software" is required, so it may in fact require the full client software to run unfortunately. Probably due to the social stuff and other things integrated into the game.

I'm not counting on it, but count me amongst the first to rejoice if they ever bring Midway back, 7.8/10 too much water be damned.

Much as I love the Refractor engine era of Battlefield, things get a little janky when the ships start moving and people kinda judder as they're standing on them. BF2142's Titan mode didn't improve that too much.

BF1 with that big weaponized zeppelin (which is admittedly not naval because it's flying, but still serves much the same purpose) suggests that they've largely solved that problem for the Frostbite engine (perhaps because we have orders of magnitude more CPU performance and bandwidth to work with now), so perhaps it's not entirely out of the question if they actually decide they want to do it.

This actually leads to another thing I'm hoping for with Battlefield Portal in the future: expansion into the WWI and 2142 eras, old-school zeppelins vs. Titans, because why the hell not?

Midway or Coral Sea? The free coral sea add-on map patch to 1942 back in the day was my favorite air map. My favorite 'all around' map was Guadalcanal with how funky the terrain was.

I technically count Coral Sea as a dogfighting map like Battle of Britain, mainly because DICE deliberately made the carriers completely immobile for that specific map, much like what later games in the franchise do (most notably BF2's take on Wake Island, which I suspect wasn't included in the initial 1942 rep because of the naval aspect despite rivaling Strike at Karkand for being Battlefield's that one map).

The carriers are just there as destroyable spawn points and an endless supply of planes, nothing more. I kinda wish they kept 'em mobile, because at this point, joining a server with Coral Sea running usually nets you on the receiving end of that one player who knows how to make the perfect strafe run on the AA guns from just the right nap-of-the-sea angle that you can't hit them while you just get shot right out of the turret seat. They've got it down to a damn science by now.

Come to think of it, BF1942 had an unusual amount of free added content via patches compared to today's standards, especially with EA as the publisher. Coral Sea and Battle of Britain were both patch maps as I recall, the Russian Assault and American Engineer got their own weapons instead of using faction-inappropriate ones (a drum-fed assault rifle I can't remember the name of and the M1 Garand, respectively replacing the faction-inappropriate BAR and Lee-Enfield No. 3), and this was at the same time they were doing two paid expansions (Road to Rome and Secret Weapons of WWII).

...actually, you know what? Secret Weapons content in Battlefield Portal, please! Give us those Rocketeer jetpacks so we can turn it into totally-not-Tribes if we want.

Huh Just got an invite to play in the BF2042 technical play test from August 12th-16th......Did anyone else get anything?

Also, I haven't pre-ordered or subbed to EA play or anything, so I am very skeptical that this is even legit lol.

I got one too, and I Don't want it, but it's not transferable unfortunately.
Ok good to hear someone else got it. Was worried it was BS. I will give it a shot see how I like it. At least this might give me an indication if I want to buy it or not.

I pray they will have 128 player testing as well.

Their reg website is completely fucked.
yeah, had to try a few times to get through the paytest questions. then I got a server error. now it says I don't have any playtests lol. before I got the server error it seemed like it was going to have me fill out a profile or something. I guess they invited alot of people, who knows how many will get in.

Same. You probably opted in on the Origin site in the past for betas.

Unfortunately still no GPU that can run it so I can't try it.

Got the invite but figured I would as EA has me as a regular tester for alphas, unreleased modes etc.

Didn't get an invite, don't even know how to sign up for it. Suppose I have to wait for an open beta?

We all knew it was coming, but it still hurts. Highlights are mine:

"Andrew Wilson

Let me jump in. On do we think Battlefield will return to an every other year launch, I would say - I think that is our orientation. But more importantly, I think you should think about Battlefield as a service what we announced - what we're doing for the launch of this game is really revolutionizing and reinventing what - all our epic scale warfare is in the context of gameplay. In addition to that, we've heard us announce Battlefield Portal, which really starts to lean into user-generated content and will drive deep long-term engagement in the game."

Of course. That is the idea behind the "Specialists". They're copying the CoD and R6 Siege model.

I plan to give alot of feedback, I don't want this game turning into cod. i think movement speed and respawn times are what I'm concerned about, and ttk.
Another thing I hope they bring back is a hardcore mode. I really dislike having to use 30 bullets to kill someone.

Portal will take care of that. We can adjust bullet damage, speed and hitpoints as well as HUD elements. I will either make or be playing servers with as realistic damage as possible with zero HUD elements.

I noticed that BF2042 is up for preorder on Steam.

Does that mean we won’t need the origin app and can do it all through steam now? That'd be great as I never liked that origin thing anyway

Yeah but few will play those servers, which is why a good hardcore mode should be added by default. BF Portal is great, I'm just saying it is no substitute for having it standardized.

I think you underestimate the draw portal will have. It has a rush preset too :D.

I think you're completely wrong with the draw Portal will have. I'm currently building a $2400 system for a buddy who hasn't played in years almost solely for Portal, remastered classic maps and modes.

I've bought it largely for that as well. But my point still stands. Unless they make a mode standardized, you'll have a hard time finding a server with those settings you like. Always has been that way because everyone has their own preferences.

I'm hoping they make a standardized hardcore mode, and a standardized hardcore with modern only equipment (BF4/BC2 stuff).

Well. My old crew is excited about portal. Having our own server back again is so huge. To be able to play organized matches again!!!

Armored Fist is who we are btw. We used to be able to play 32v32 with just us but it was always fun to play other clans/teams. We already have all the infrastructure bits and pieces to get going again. Luckily we have some very organized individuals who have kept everything from way back. So getting going again should be smooth. Hit me up if you are an old school player or just want to play battlefield in a team play setting.
