Batman: Arkham Knight

I saw Troy Baker do Voice Actors Gone Wild/Twisted Toonz at Megacon this year. I have no qualms saying that he is the best voice actor of our time. The way he portrayed Joker live has me convinced he could act the entire character on screen if given the chance.

He's good but he isn't Frank Welker.

You in Orlando?

As far as I know this game hasn't been downgraded, or at least their early preview videos/screenshots match the current videos/screenshots.

Once Origins was patched, it was a brilliant game. The feeling of diving for what feels like a long time is what I would expect it to feel like if Batman were real. That being said, I'd rate them as follows:

Arkham City
Arkham Asylum
Arkham Origins

Now that Rocksteady is back at the helm, I'm hoping it'll be the best of the series since it'll be their last.

Agreed. Origins was buggy as hell when it first came out but so was City. When it first came out you couldnt run it in DX11 or it would run at like 20 fps all the time or some shit. Not sure what is up with Batman games and their buggy releases but yeah, once Origin was fixed, it was superb. Like I mentioned earlier, how I would rank them depends on the mood Im in. Generally I like Origins better but I go thru these phases where I like City better because it felt a little easier to roam around the world.

I think I'd rank them like boss09 did. City was the most fun for me to play and I really liked the world of it. Asylum gets second because I think it has the best story and pacing of the three and it was the first good Batman game in a very long time (I honestly can't even think of a good Batman game since the SNES era and I'm not even sure whether or not it's a case of nostalgia goggles for those). Origins for me is the weakest of the three. Not bad by any means, but with the combat not feeling as smooth and the story not being as good it just doesn't hit the high notes of Rocksteady's titles. Calling Origins the worst of the three is kind of like saying The Dark Knight Rises is the worst of the Nolan Batman trilogy. Weaker compared to the rest of the franchise but still a stand out experience that rises above many others out there.

I would love to see what WB Montreal could do with a superhero game when they have 2-3 years to work on one and aren't trying to work from an old version of another studio's game. I'd like to see Montreal tackle someone like the Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, etc someone that really hasn't had good video game representation before.

Arkham city was the worst of the 3. It has barely 4 hours of story missions and so much filler content it detracted from the game. Also the story was shite in it. For me AA was best, then AO and finally AC which I finished because I had started it.

All three games had a lot of unneeded fluff in their stories to pad them out. I found the fluff in City fairly interesting, but I get into a lot of the comic references and more unknown characters. One of the edges I give to City or Asylum is the ending. Asylum's ending is horrible. The boss battle is idiotic, the ending is unsatisfying, and it's really a piss poor finale to an otherwise great game. It's not Halo 2 level bad but it's fucking close. I'd put it on par with Bioshock's equally shit ending (both of them and the boss battle).

Agreed, Asylum's ending was pretty anticlimactic. I did rather enjoy beating up all the dudes who were clapping for Batman on his way to the endgame though. :D

So I'm most of the way through Origins and wow, it's my favorite of the 3 in some ways. The story and cutscenes are absolutely top-notch! But, it's definitely the glitchiest of the three. Yesterday I did the Deadshot predator encounter...I eliminated everyone in the room, then went in for the kill on Deadshot and the game went full retard. I could make Batman walk, but he wouldn't run or attack. And the camera view was locked, i.e. no free spin, so here I am just walking around with a locked POV while he's taking shots at me.

Other times, Batman does this weird flappy thing when I'm flying, It's hard to explain, but his cape will flap up and down in a jerky fashion and I can actually increase my altitude until it stops doing it and he just coasts like normal.

Also the game freezing up and crashing is getting a bit old, but I think I'm nearing the end (Joker just got taken to Blackgate). Man, that Gotham hotel mission was awesome!!

Yeah Ive got the flappy thing on my game too. It doesnt do it too often so its not that annoying. I dont understand why all the bugs are in this game. I too think that its my favorite of the 3 sometimes but really dont understand why its so buggy. I wouldve though with a game this good that they wouldve spent some time on fit and finish. When it first came out there was a game breaking bug where you needed to go thru an air vent to get to the next section but it literally wouldnt let you. You could walk up to it and crouch or whatever but could not get in. Luckily the patch came out pretty fast for it though.

bought my Arkham Knight code today on [H] for $25...I'm ready!...don't disappoint me Rocksteady!

why do I have the sinking feeling that Arkham Knight is going to be slightly disappointing?...I bought the Nvidia bundled code so it's already in my Steam Library ready to be unlocked but all the footage and gameplay trailers have underwhelmed me...I love the previous 2 Arkham games and this one looks like more of the open world Batman from the previous games but something seems to be missing

seems like Rocksteady only added the Batmobile because of fans complaints about the lack of one...I loved flying through the city with my Batsuit but now everything looks more grounded into a GTA style...the amazing combat looks fine but doesn't feel as new anymore because every game has copied it...I'm hoping for a grand finale that tops all previous games but I have a feeling this is going to be the worst of the 3

There's good reason to be skeptical, especially looking at the "planned DLC" list:

All Locations/All Preorders: Harley Quinn Story Pack

GameStop Exclusive: Red Hood Story Pack

  • Access to Red Hood story missions. Play as Red Hood in these missions.

Steam Exclusive: Gotham's Future Skin Pack

    Batman Beyond costume.

PS4 Exclusive DLC: Scarecrow Nightmare DLC Pack

Granted, in Arkham City they also padded the hell out of "skins" for Batman and company, as well as making the Catwoman stuff into a weird DLC campaign. It seems though that that was mere practice for this one's DLC which is almost Ubisoft-like in its scope across locking out gameplay features, DLC missions, and cosmetic gear.

Barring all the bullshit DLC (and all the whining) I kind of have an uneasy feeling about AK as well. I mean I LOVED AA and AC, so the team is obviously capable, but it seems like they may have bitten off a little more than they could chew. I mean basically they are creating the ultimate Batman game where you can free roam Gotham itself in the Batmobile, along with the regular AC gameplay + whatever other improvements they have in place (like the dual combat "tag team" stuff.)

That's a LOT for any team to do, no matter how talented. I guess I'd say I'm in a "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" state of mind on this.

Yeah I definitely hate the whole each retailer gets some different DLC BS. I ended up skipping Watch Dogs because of the excel spreadsheet you needed to figure out what you were suppose to get with the game.

I think I am still going to overall like this game cause I liked all the previous versions, but I am still not too thrilled at the bat mobile combat videos I have seen. I think it's the one thing in the game I am not going to enjoy.

GMG has...or had double check...40 percent off preorder in the email... Steam code...piece of cake.

I dont have a problem with all the DLC stuff. None of it is required to get thru the game or if any is substantial story missions that shouldve been in the game to begin with (like Mass Effect 3's From Ashes) and so if you dont want any of it, dont buy any of it.

This will be the 3rd version of this game really, the open world city version, so its gonna have a good chance its going to be watered down some because how many times can you really do the same thing over and over and have it get better each time. That said AC and AO (I know theyre 2 different developers) were so good that if AK is just as good as either one of them, itll be plenty worth it to me to pick this up at full retail.

I agree.

Back when Arkham City came out I felt that game raised the bar in a number of ways on what a good third person action adventure game could be. I'm saying that as a huge Assassin's Creed fan, no less. That thing turned my head and opened my eyes and I don't think it's any accident we have seen several games including successive AC games or Shadow of Mordor (awesome) more or less take cues from that game ever since.

I wish Witcher 3 had Shadow of Mordor style combat as a baseline but I digress. ;)

To play devil's advocate, and since you made a point of bringing up buying a cheap ($20-$25) code for the game as many are doing (if not getting it free with a videocard), why are you sweating it? Rocksteady has a solid track record and if it even lives up to 50% of the trailers you'd be getting your money's worth no matter what.

My sinking feeling is that somewhere along the way, many PC gamers have just come to expect bargain bin pricing at launch (if not "LOL i'll just wait for $5 steem sail") and a genre-redefening 10/10 title. WTF? That's not really sustainable for AAA titles on the PC platform.

it has absolutely zero to do with the pricing...you're the one that brought up pricing...it has everything to do with the gameplay, trailers and interviews Rocksteady has given about the game and what I stated in my post...if you want to rant about PC gamers/reddit/entitlement/pricing etc then fine (you do that in almost every post) but this had nothing to do with that...the Batmobile seems shoehorned in appease people who expect that vehicle in a Batman game...it's not a bad thing that they included it but it feels like it's going to dominate gameplay...the dual-play thing doesn't look all that groundbreaking either (co-op would have been amazing)...the trailers all look like they could have come from any of the previous Arkham games (not that it's a bad thing)...I was expecting something epic to close out the series...I'm hoping to still get it but the marketing for this game has been underwhelming

Rocksteady is awesome and I trust them but as CDPR showed with Witcher 3 even the best PC developers can fall victim in trying to appease the console crowd

a game is not defined by how much I paid for it...Witcher 3 is worth full price based on the game itself...same for the Dark Souls series...just because I paid $25 for Arkham Knight doesn't mean that I should lower my standards or take less value out of it

PC gaming surpassed consoles and is only increasing. Not sure there's a whole lot to worry about there.

Hell I've said I was going to wait for games to be $20 then I went ahead and got the Witcher 3 $80 pack. The only other games I'll probably buy are Ori and Battlefront (at full price). If you really like a game or genre you should support it.

As for Batman I didn't really into into AC. I'll probably wait until it's a steal. It does look gorgeous though.... The trailers, what I really noticed was their faces and eyes. Especially the cat's.

It's not like it's been four years since the last Rocksteady-developed Batman game or anything… I mean, it's not like they could have been doing anything with those four years of development time. They certainly couldn't be adding all of the content they're now promoting.

AC and AO were just ~10 hour campaigns and a bunch of Riddler events.
4 years? This game better be massive on the scale of TW3.

As much as I enjoyed the previous games, the open world was pathetic in both.

[Arkham Knight is] five times the size of Arkham City

like u will have time in action fighting badguys notice those effects hahaha.

There is generally a lot of downtime in these games as you go from place to place or explore. They're not cranked up to 11 the entire time.

how much the Nvidia GameWorks features add to a game in terms of graphics fidelity is debatable (especially among AMD users) but I'm glad to have an Nvidia card with the option of enabling them...the Arkham games have always used the GameWorks features well

$23 at cdkeys.com if anyone still needs a key. 100% legit, and I've bought quite a few keys from them, almost instant delivery. $36 for the premium edition with the season pass and all that bullshit.
