How is the screen for watching videos? What about for normal usage?
 
Screen - TO ME OVERALL Is Great For The Size , Videos Play Nice & Clear - Easy To Read Text , Just Some Web Pages Don't Go Well With The Low Resolution :)

From the eeeuser.com forums it looks like 8G will not be coming to America. Seems a guy who works for Directron(sp) keeps mentioning in the forums to people who talk about the 8G to "go ahead and get the 4G now"..

Granted it is a pretty big rumor, but there are simple ways you can upgrade the 4G which I will probably do once I get mine

I want one! I think I'll wait for 2nd or 3rd gen which are already in the works, 2nd gen already has a release date for sometime in spring (maybe I'll have a real job by then again). The black EEE looks so cool, saw one at BB.

Me and the wife are getting a black ones for our cars. We will now have the ability to have a very rugged PC in our cars for our PC needs. It just never has to leave the vehicle except if we make a pitstop somewhere that has internet access. With WHS coming online at our house...most of our major files will be easily accessed. Therefore will have effectively have nice thin clients with a few added features (we have GPS pucks in both our cars).
 
I want one, and will buy one, i just don't think its worth $400 IMHO.
 
just a couple first impressions so far..

keyboard takes a little getting used to ala a black berry....but after that its just about the perfect web browsing utility.

As for the OS, after you kick it into full desktop mode the included OS seems tweaked just right for the device. I'm gnona hold off on loading up ubuntu till the wireless driver/power issues are completely worked out.

Now im just waiting on my 8g card and new stick of ram.:D
 
I just thought about that printable coupon at BB for 10-12% off, wonder if that works on EEE :D That be $48 off!

How long is the manufacturer's warranty on the EEE? And what will revision 2 offer over the current model?
 
Ohh im so all over this when bonus comes in. Add a 250 gig or so usb powered ext hd. an 8 gig sdhc for xp, and any pda with an unlimited cell phone plan (i all ready have, thanks AT&T, 40 bux USD/month) and you can walk around with a laptop you can surf the web remotely, from pretty much anywhere. Thin Clinets, Ahoy!:D
 
How are you getting AT&T unlimited for $40, I have to pay $60? Thought the $40 was limited to 30MB download a month and then they charge you $0.01 per K. I'd get a WD Passport which powers through the USB port. I'm gonna use Motorola Phone Tools to connect to the web on the road on the EEE. 8GB SDHC is a good idea instead of wearing out internal SSD.

Some things that bug me, the original EEE pictures I saw from Taiwan had build in GSM and Bluetooth. Wonder if theres a way to get those?
 
Anyone have cell based wireless internet on one of these? These are ideal for work, but I don't think they'd work with Verizon or ATT based internet with the Linux distro.

If you have a voice plan, and a pda or BB, you can add on unlimited PDA connect internet, and tether to a laptop or PC. youre not supposed to, but theres not a single person on howardforums.com that has been TOS'd from AT&T for tethering. I've even asked and theyve said its ok.
 
I know about that plan, but its limited to 30MB down and you've not been charged, the extra fees?

Thats really odd, I poured over the Terms of Service, after Verizon's 5 gig = Unlimited fiasco :rolleyes: But i was told numerous times its entirely unlimited, and have used more than a 10-15 gigs in a month and have not hand any interruption or anything. Now their customer service on the other hand, sucks some hairy, corpulent spheres, but their plans are cheap and they have decent phones.

That's what I don't get. I bought a $100 USED IBM Thinkpad 560X that does all of the above plus more. Buying the eeeeeee for those tasks when you can buy a used $100 laptop is like buying a brand new $25,000 honda civic to save on gas when you can just buy a used ford taurus for $1,000. In the longrun the cheaper version always wins.
 
Why would you pay $400 for something that can pretty much surf the internet, check e-mail, and run open office :confused: ?? One of the kids in my voice and video systems class had 1.. and while it looks slick and small.. I just want to ask what is the point, honestly? Ironically he also has one of those tablet book readers..

If it were $200 I could see a reason to get one.. that's reasonable for what it does. $400 imo is not, when the storage is that limited (Granted it's an SSD).. the screen is puny, and you can get oodles more for the moolah.

The eee is a basic machine, simple, small, efficient.

If we wanted to get huge laptops (aka desktop replacements), we would.

We don't question you why you want to get something huge, heavy, cumbersome and a non-chick magnet do we?

For that matter, why does anyone on this forum buy ANYTHING computer related... oh yea, because it is a hobby, we want to play with the newest gadgets on the market, or we want to tear it apart to see how it works, and/or make it work better (hopefully!).

The 560 is larger and roughly 2x as heavy. A fresh battery will be another $50-100. Also the EEE appears to outspec it significantly on every factor except screen size.

I see, so inquiring to how the item is useful automatically dictates me as a troll? Rather than commenting on how you use it in a manner that makes it a more viable option than a regular laptop, to help better my understanding and arguement my question.. you seem to be the troll.
I even gave it props for being slick in small, but I just don't see the advantage, or reason on getting it versus, say, a Celeron laptop for a similar price.

Not asking questions about something. Gee, that's a great idea. That's really informative and helps better a person's understanding.

It's one thing to respond to me like a complete dick if I were actually trolling, but I wasn't. I was asking why you would purchase this over a similar priced 'standard' laptop... because who knows.. there could be something that interests me. But thanks.

It's a small, efficient machine purpose-built for quickly performing basic but common tasks. A similar machine can be improvised with a bigger, older laptop, but it won't be as slick or convenient--the Eee is very, very small and light and does exactly what it's supposed to do extremely well. Despite its intentions, the analogy with the $25,000 Civic and the $1,000 Taurus is actually perfect for my argument, too--you might save money with the Taurus, but would you really want to drive it? (I would, but that's just because I don't like Hondas.) For most people, the answer is no. It's not a question of pure utility or functionality, but one of personal preference. Sometimes, people spend more money to get products they like more. On the other hand, if you prioritize saving money over having a slick machine, then by all means roll your own.

I would also note that I usually prefer homemade things to factory-built, but the Eee PC is so cool that even a homemade internet laptop doesn't match it.

Wikipedia states that revision 2 possibly will carry a ULV Merom processor, and may remove the internal fan.

I wouldn't mind grabbing an EEE PC if they were $100 cheaper. Hopefully they drop in price, otherwise I may just wait and see what the next version has in store.
