Not really, because Ford only put in on "one" of their vehicles, just like Apple has it on only one notebook. It is not that other notebook manufactures, won't follow suit, I am pretty sure Samsung is the maker of the 28x18 (could be wrong, but it is irrelevant anyways) and will have a display very soon using their own technology.

I'm not bashing Apple here for making the jump, my point is that Samsung is the one leading the way, as it is their creation and it doesn't matter if Apple just asked for them, Apple didn't make them.

This is akin to saying once Apple starts using OLED displays everyone is going to say look at Apple, look how they innovate and lead the way, when in fact OLED has been around for a good while now.

Right. I imagine that OEMs have expressed some interest in such displays, but Samsung (or LG, or whatever) knows that Apple is going to be the one delivering steady, predictable volume, with a very large initial order.
 
I find the resolution extremely intriguing, but I wonder how software like VMware and Parallels will handle the resolution. I assume the software will need to be updated to support pixel doubling on the virtual machine level to make windows and other (dpi-scaling unfriendly) operating systems usable.

If these screens stay on apple products we will never see any big lcd manufacturers releasing them. We have to hope that there is a big demand outside of apple products to get this in other forms. Personally I dont care for anything above 1080 on a laptop and am contempt with 10x7.

I wont own a macbook, but them starting the craze for hogher resolution screens is a good thing over all. Lets see how long it will take for tuos to adapt to the lower/midrange products outside of apple.

No iphone5 stuff?

And if apple does start to use OLED I guarentee everyone and their mom would bitch and moan how apple is a horrible company yet the ONLY place to experience it would be on an Apple platform so as the intimidator used to say lead follow or get the hell out of the way.

apple brought this tech to market, not dell, clevo, or even Samsung. We should count the months/years it is going to take to see anything from anyone else even touch this tech.
 
what gets me excited about the retina display isn't the resolution, but it's a IPS panel :)

This. I can't believe the lengths people are going to, trying to somehow argue the new display is a bad thing? WTF. Can't wait to see one of these in person.

Even from just using my iPhone 4S (versus old 3G) the retina display as a concept is fantastic, as well looking at new iPad vs iPad2 in person. The way Apple focuses on user experience (display, input devices) is impressive, since that is how you interact with technology.

Of course you won't be doing high detail gaming on a 650M, but at least the panels will be produced in volume and trickle down, it's time for garbage like 768p/1280x800 to die (typing this from my HP 6930P 14.1" 1280x800 work laptop).

Apple has done a decent job making a relatively quality display the minimum spec on their products. That doesn't mean that you can't get similar tech from other manufacturers, even in laptops. Obviously this latest panel will only be found on apple products for a while, but quality ips or other high-gamut high-resolution displays have been available on windows boxes for awhile, such as HP's DreamColor displays, and Dell also offers a premium panel. Most simply choose (poorly) to not get those displays, as they simply want the cheapest box they can get, then complain that it doesn't compare to a high-dollar Apple.

Hell, high-resolution mobile phones were in existence before Apple's "Retina" display found in the iPhone 4. Even blackberry's had higher resolution screens than the iPhone 3GS back in the day. Apple loved marketing, and when they can fudge the numbers to make something look magical they will, such as them claiming that "28 million copies of Lion sold", then switching to a graph based on userbase percentages instead of copies sold against Windows, claiming that it took Windows 26 months to hit the same achievement... Even with Android's customer satisfaction rating at 50% compared to Apple's 75% (or whatever the figures were), Android still has more satisfied users, since they ship significantly more devices.

Apple insistence on having a quality display is only a good thing for the industry, I will give them that. If only I could stand the smell of their marketing BS enough to enjoy it.

I don't think many were saying it was impossible, these displays were rumored for a long time before they made their appearance, they weren't exactly a secret.

+1, there were tons of naysayers.... now that its a reality they're all gone into hiding, denial, or are actively saying that the new technology either doesnt matter, or is somehow worse...

I hate everything apple stands for. I will never buy an apple product.

That being said, I commend apple for pushing display tech forward once again. Anyone who says we don't need advancement in the display field is retarded, straight up.

Despite being a niche market for IPS panels, it played out quite well. We can regularly get $300-600 (depending on foreign-made vs. USA branded) 27" 2560x1440 monitors now :D. Apple is the first to use a high-resolution display on its notebooks like this, but that's about the only real "first" they've had in ages.

Yeah, it's called not being biased. I too do not like what Apple stands for and their obscene pricing models on commodity hardware, but I can applaud them for doing this one thing right anyway ;).

I'm happy as a pig about them pushing displays like this towards the mass-market.... I'd love to get an even higher-resolution panel than my 2560x1600 30" S-IPS one :D.
 
Pushing for higher resolutions is great, but I hope Apple doesn't reserve this panel for $2200+ machines only, or it may have no impact in lowering the prices of high res panels or pushing other companies to follow suit.

I mean its not like Samsung is rushing out to make a "retina" display competing tablet for $500. Apple's certain hasn't helped the monitor market either. The Apple 27" Cinema Display is still $999.00, so Dell's U2711 is as well. (not counting sale prices)

Don't get me wrong, its nice to finally see so many pixels in an LCD larger than post-it note, but I'm not counting on the new Mac Pro changing the market.

I have to question the graphics card though. Why not a Quadro or FireGL? I mean you make a laptop for professionals, then don't put in a video card certified for Premiere's Mercury Playback engine, AutoCAD or gamers. So really you are just making a laptop for photographers, artists and thats it?
 
It's pretty sad as this laptop stomps everything available on the desktop. I'd love to see a high res 24" monitor. That said given the HD nature of these new laptops running only an SSD seems to be kind of silly. Especially when you remove the disc drive. I guess they expect everyone to use the App Store for movies and everything else? How are you supposed to "legally" watch a show you bought on a disc?

It has a great display but that 650M isn't getting stomped by a even a mid-range desktop GPU and I think that's missing element here. Great display, just not enough GPU to utilize it fully.

Like everyone else I'm all for these displays, hopefully they will get cheaper and the power to fully utilize them will become more feasible in a laptop form and that well see better desktop displays as well.

Since Apple no longer makes a regular MacBook this is the regular MacBook. Their marketing department rightly felt it advantageous to not change the name.
 
i watched the keynote they said that the retina display was ips
 
The retina screen seems to scale very well in the desktop (2D) but no mention of it scaling in games and 3D applications, at least not without the developers making significant changes. So if I understand this correctly, basicly if you run any game at 1440x900 it's going to look the same as on an older macbook pro unless the developer makes changes to the game to make use of scaling?

Anyway, this will appeal to the masses, especially the masses of folks who simply use their computer to browse the web and do office work... and can afford a >2k machine. :D

Who buys an apple laptop to play games on it?who buys an apple pc for games?very few...games have always been out of the question for apple,thats why they use such low graphics cards.

Well Blizzard games work well on Apple products and some Steam games are coming but none of them are all that advanced.

WoW, Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, or even Half Life 2 will likey not run at the native res maxed worth a damn. I wish Apple would have been able to put something more powerful in there but I have no idea what thermal considerations need to be made for a 680m/670m over a 650m.
 
gone are the days with the retina mcbook pro now of buying a base model and upping the ram and replacing the hdd with an ssd as i did with the macbook in my sig...

alas when i have some money i'll probably sell this one and get a retina 15 inch macbook pro
 
It does suck that RAM and SSD as soldered so no user upgrading, especially with how cheap quality 256-512GB SSDs are now.

BTW Anandtech.com has a bunch of analysis articles on the retina display, scaling and gaming included.

RAM is only soldered on the MBA. It's user replaceable for MacBooks.
The SSD is user replaceable for both the MBA and the MacBooks.

Not anymore. The SSD has been changed to a non-standard drive to support the new smaller form factor. It may be upgradable, but you might have to re-mortgage your house to afford the upgrade after the fact. I didn't read anything about the RAM, but would not be surprised if they went soldered on the new MacBook to save space.
 
I did some reading on the new screen. It seems they didn't want to run 2880x1400 native in MAC OS because it would make everything look tiny. So they use some kind of trick to run at lower res, then pixel double and scale. Games are aware of the new res., but ALL apps HAVE TO be up[dated to be aware of this new scaling software or fonts get distorted and blurry. So unless an update is done to every browser (Chrome), game (Diablo III), and other 3rd party programs fonts look messed up.
