Apple WWDC 2012 Coverage

I'll be you and the other troll probably plugged your laptops into an actual ethernet port exactly once...when you tried to get linux running

I doubt anyone other than trolls actually care or will even notice for that matter

I guess you have no imagination and can't think of any situation where it would make sense. You rather just drink Apple Kool-Aid all day and go with it.

I'm not going to tell you that it wouldn't look awesome when doing those things. I'm telling you it would look and perform better on any other mid to high end machine on the market. It has the display going for it. A display that is not made directly by Apple, just one that they were the first to integrate into their mobile fleet. In this regard, yes, they are pushing the industry forward. This will undoubtedly push other manufacturers to offer the same resolution displays in the near future. Apple did it first, now we just wait for any other computer manufacturer to come along and do it better, and cheaper.
you won't be seeing these panels for at least a year and certainly not cheaper

The only troll here is you, as evidenced by your constant nonsense in these Apple threads.

Wired Ethernet is useless? Give me a break.

Its not that. I think everyone would rather it have an ethernet port. I would personally be willing to let it go for the machine is a whole though. Its not a deciding factor for me, and im willing to bet a whole lot of others based on Air sales.

I never said it was useless.

I said that you guys botching about it are making a point that barely anyone gives a shit about

Quad core I7 at 2.7/3.2 with 8Gb of ram is no horsepower? You people are funny.

All of that is mobile, so they are worse compared to their desktop counter parts..and why would I get a laptop to do SERIOUS video editing/photo editing? For that, if I were to go Apple, I would go with a regular Mac desktop for some obvious reasons.

Because this lets you work on a plane / hotel / bus etc. Pretty obvious reasons.

Definitely not for me, but I can appreciate the display resolution, if it can push prices down on high resolution displays for laptops in general and make them standard, I'm all for it.

One year, whenever. The more this display is mass produced, the more likely we will see a price drop on the cost of the panel. Will Apple's prices reflect any potential price drop in hardware? NOPE. Not to mention the panel itself isn't the only piece of the puzzle that is seemingly overpriced in a Macbook Pro. You will see other computer manufacturers using this sort of display, with more GPU power, for less or around the same dollar amount.

Extremely tempted to just dump my desktop and 2011 13" mbp for the new 15"

Thing is straight up sexy.

Many places do not allow wireless (or have separate internet only wifi networks) due to security concerns. Additionally moving large files over wireless sucks and can significantly bottleneck the spectrum. I use the ethernet port on my laptop several times a week for those reasons.

And all thanks to Apple. Thank god for them.

yeah there's no way we'll see a drop in the price from Apple I agree with you there.

but the supplier isn't going to be able to produce enough to get them to anyone else for quite a while and even when they can supply the rest of the OEM's whatever lucrative contract they've signed with Apple will hinder it even further.

what'd it take Dell to get a comparable ultra thin out? something like 4 years?

Think about those who favor portable horsepower for on the go scenarios. Some major NLEs and 3D modeling apps support CUDA for accelerated performance, so it should be better. Apple going the Nvidia route is a smart move.

WHOA! that thing is 2200 and 2800 bucks o_O

bwahahaha...there's going to be some gnashing of teeth on the apple sites

Yeah, at this point I'll agree with you on the Dell side. That's not because they just couldn't do it, either. Dell is much more focused towards the datacenter at this point. Consumer computing is not where they are making their money anymore. It's in storage, switching, and all of the Enterprise spaces they are buying up through acquisitions. Their portfolio is much broader than Apple and I'd say at this point selling computers is a necessary evil. I'll be looking for performance computer offerings from Sager, Clevo, MSI, ASUS, etc. Sure some of them will be expensive but I'd rather my money go towards useable performance over the Apple brand name that comes with a nice 50% hardware markup.

Here's a stupid question, but won't things look to small on that tiny laptop screen with that insane rezolution?

Yes, if the OS isn't designed to compensate, it will just show smaller DPI graphics on a higher DPI display, making them tiny. (DPI = dots per inch) So with a screen made with a higher DPI, the graphic need to be made bigger, and at higher resolution, to stay the same size.

Yup, it's not likely that people are going to leverage it where it really can shine so it does make the feature less about functional importance and more about the battle to have larger numbers on a specifications sheet. Personally, I don't see a dire need to move resolution that high and I won't be falling over myself to get that sort of screen just for the sake of having one until they're common and very inexpensive, but it will become a point of debate, scorn, love, etc. in on-going discussions for the time being.

Have you actually compared a retina display vs lower DPI displays side by side? I've seen an iPad 2 and iPad 3 side by side and the difference is quite impressive. I only bought an iPad 2 because I can't afford the extra $$ for the 3. The same difference will be seen in the MBP as well. I can't wait until I get a chance to go to the apple store and see these things side by side with the old screen.

The loss of ethernet is minor. I can count how many times I've had to plug my laptop into ethernet, and at least half of them I didn't really need to. Ethernet has a place in servers and desktops where the fastest possible connection is needed and they don't move. It's almost pointless in a laptop, thanks to WiFi, and if you are the small minority who actually NEED ethernet, there is a thunderbolt adapter, so you're not exactly left in the dust.

Firewire is dead, so who gives a crap about that being dropped.

How much Apple dick can you suck? Would you be fine if they got rid of keyboards too?

The iPad has done fairly well ;)

Because you would do that on a laptop..which has almost no horsepower at all..yep good argument.

Sorry, but my 2007 C2D MBP has been kicking along just fine running Photoshop on all my 10MP + photos, and I've even done some video editing and reencoding that hasn't brought it to it's knees. So I can only imagine how much better a quad core 2.3 i7 (with this "turbo boost" stuff intel is touting) would be...
No horsepower. All I hear is hating and trolling...

Damn it. Apple is the ONLY (i believe) company that offers a thin and lightweight 17" laptop without a numeric keypad and arguably good battery life. I don't see this anywhere else with any other PC OEM manufacture. Step 17" game up! I'd love to purchase one and slap Linux on there if the price wasn't so ass-shafting high.

Bitch about Linux on a MacBook all you want, you can kiss my left nut. :p Their 17" laptops are smexy.

You do realize that they didn't update or release any 17" models; these are all 15" and smaller...

This also means we'd need to come up with a level above "ass-shafting" to describe what a 17" next generation MBP would cost.

Yeah, that seemed a bit odd but then I figured for now everything must be going into cranking out the 15.4" panel and that a 17" version will come latter or next year.

Speaking of enterprise, why did Apple discontinue their line of servers?

Rumors are its cancelled. Apparently it was less than 2% total notebook sales.

Overpriced and not worth it?

Their servers didn't seem to be anything special and were quite expensive.

I can see why people want the Macbook's (Air/Pro) since they are quite different from the competition, but the Desktops/Servers aren't really anything special.

If only there was an ultrabook with a decent display?

The current generation of MacAir's get pretty hot at their low native resolution. The new iPad has been known to get pretty hot due to the resolution of the retina display. I can only imagine them implementing this display on an ultrabook with current tech. It would look awesome but it might just burn a hole through your pants.

I forgot to add:
Of course 3d performance is going to take a slight hit, but that really isn't the focus of a machine like this. Let me tell you, there are millions of professionals already warming up their credit cards to go buy this thing, because they can see the professional advantage that it provides. They don't give a damn about 3d performance in games. Past MBPs have proven to be very good at what they do, and this update is a huge improvement, so I don't see how people can say this is a bad update.

Focus on the "slow" video card if you want, but the fact is, this isn't aimed at kiddies wanting to play crysis on high at retina resolutions. It's aimed at people that want to have a capable machine for getting work done. The 27" iMacs we had at school run Maya perfectly, and their resolution isn't much lower. From my understanding the 650m is a bit faster...Not to mention the much faster quad core i7 offered as the base, compared to the i5 in those iMacs, so that will certainly help speed things up.

Speaking of enterprise, why did Apple discontinue their line of servers?
minimal growth opportunities. they signaling long and hard that focus will be on consumer segment I think. not necessarily bad but it looks like apple will stick a trackpad in our toasters and fridges before a server in the basement at this point.

Of course, but with every iteration, their 17" usually comes later. Yes they're expensive but considering no other OEM satisfies my needs of a good 17 incher - I would really have no choice.

Nothings written in stone for me though - it's just a consideration.

Can't wait to see the benchmarks of this thing trying to run 3d applications at 2880x1800. I imagine it will be very ugly with an HD 4000 integrated card, and not much better with the max upgrade of a 650M.

They all come with 650M AND intel 4000 and it switches. You will not be gaming at max res. Even my 570 GTX would balk at 2880x1800

Rumors are its cancelled. Apparently it was less than 2% total notebook sales.

Thanks for the info. I guess that makes sense, I've not seen a 17" MBP in a long time though I see plenty of other models. I know a lot of people around here like bigger notebooks but I personally don't care for them unless I really needed the mobile power and screen size.

Good ole apple, thsts a high res screen. The price is fucking crazy tho. I know someone personally who will buy one of these and its a shame because its so over priced

How so?

2.3Ghz i7 Quad Core Ivy Bridge
Retina display
8GB RAM
256GB SSD
650M +HD 4000 Video

AND find me a laptop that has all this in a .71" tall form factor at that price. I dare you.

It's new tech and they are the first to adopt it. They charge outrageously high prices to begin with and people buy it up anyway. They could charge whatever they wanted at this point and justify it based solely on it being the first of its kind.

He can't. Because no one else offers it at all. Zero, zip, nada. If you want this, you gotta get it from Apple at this point. But you knew that already, so why even ask this question? Apple got their hands on it first, got it out to the market first, so there is no comparsion. That being said, we already know that they always overcharge for their products, so why would you think there won't at some point be similar offerings from other computer manufacturers for less money?

the ssd alone accounts for anywhere from 400-650 dollars of the price tag. And that's aftermarket amazon bargain hunting prices
