The web is inundated with all things Apple today thanks to the WWDC 2012 event. We don't cover Apple events but, for those of you that are interested, I recommend Engadget for WWDC 2012 news, they seem to have the best coverage.

First up, those processors will reach up to 2GHz Core i7, with Turbo Boost tipping these up to 3.2GHz. The FaceTime camera is now 720p, with the display on the 11-inch model now 1366 x 768 (and Intel's HD graphics 4000 doing the pushing). The 13-incher will house a 1440 x 900 screen and both will arrive with a pair of USB 3.0 ports and capacity for up to 8GB of RAM.

New macbook pro has the option of: "15.4-inch display with a pixel density of 2880 x 1800"

Holy shit... I just bought a u3011 last week that has a smaller resolution than the new Macbook :eek:. Impressive.....
 
Can't wait to see the benchmarks of this thing trying to run 3d applications at 2880x1800. I imagine it will be very ugly with an HD 4000 integrated card, and not much better with the max upgrade of a 650M.
 
Yeah, it won't be setting any land speed records for rendering performance. That said, older games are going to look pretty remarkable on a display like that.

With the lack of GPU power I'd say the prettiest thing you'll be able to look at is your desktop wallpaper. But man will it look nice!!!!

Now, please go upgrade the ACDs to this resolution so consumers with non-Apple performance desktop computers can actually use this resolution to it's full potential. :D

One of the things that the high resolution offers is the ability to scale back to a lower res that's exactly half native (1440x900) in this case and still get "native resolution" experience which a lower-end GPU could actually pull off without too much effort.

I understand. That's cool tech and whatnot, but it leaves me pondering the question "Then WTF is the point of having that retina display resolution in the first place?" -- Instead of applying it where it could actually be used in 3d applications, it seems like it's just going to be a pretty, yet mostly unusable, selling point to the idiot masses. Highest resolution ever??? Yes please!!! My facebook page is so high res I can't even read the text on my feed!!!
 
The point of having a high resolution display without the cards to power it in a 3d environment is for work. I can't get enough screen real estate, and my graphic demand at work is relatively low. Just need lots of space to lay out all my 2d shit.
 
Here's a stupid question,but won't things look to small on that tiny laptop screen with that insane rezolution?

Yup, it's not likely that people are going to leverage it where it really can shine so it does make the feature less about functional importance and more about the battle to have larger numbers on a specifications sheet. Personally, I don't see a dire need to move resolution that high and I won't be falling over myself to get that sort of screen just for the sake of having one until they're common and very inexpensive, but it will become a point of debate, scorn, love, etc. in on-going discussions for the time being.

It's amazing tech. It's about time we see this resolution, and only fitting that Apple should have it available to the masses first. Now we just wait for this to be adopted by manufacturers who cater to the performance/enthusiast crowd so we can actually use it to it's potential.

I'm not going to bash it until I see it, but you're probably right that it's way past the point of diminishing returns... you would think [H] members would be all for over the top resolutions!

I did wish it had a 670M in it. I'm waiting for Apple to update their store to really see the specs and price points. My wife has an iMac from 2009 which isn't bad (was a little pricey ftw and crappy mobile graphics), but I mainly just despise OS X. It's terrible for work.
 
Being able to view 1080p video in a "window" with available buttons and bars around it would be very awesome. Also, working on higher resolution images without having to scroll around? Again, awesome.

I would think that bashing it a little bit would be acceptable and expected from the enthusiast crowd. And not because it's an Apple device, but moreso because performance is an afterthought to Apple. Design, aesthetics and power consumption come way before performance is even a factor. Yes, they throw in the newest Intel processor. But the rest of the internals are cheapo garbage, from the integrated graphics card, to the most probable lower-end SSD read/write speeds (assuming this based off the SSDs in the MacAir's). No, MacBook Pro's aren't a gaming computer. They don't have standard "non-Pro" Macbooks anymore. I think they should just call this thing the "Macbook" -- besides the resolution, I don't see what's so "Pro" about it.

The new MBP looks very interesting with that display but yeah, it's going to be help back by GPU. All in all there don't seem to be any big surprises, the MBP Retina display was the biggest thing I think most were expecting.
 
Eh, sorry. I worked at the store for a year inbetween REAL IT jobs, did the repair technician training through Apple. I saw what I saw. Gold plated cheapo garbage. But hey, people sure do like it :)

I'm not sure getting rid of Ethernet on the MPB was a real great idea, but I guess we'll see. Any excuse to sell an overpriced adapter, right? :p

Yes, up to 50% faster than the 3000. I plan to get an Ivy Bridge Windows 8 hybrid/convertible so yeah, I've checked out the 4000 a bit. It's not a bad IGP solution but it's not would I would really pushing this kind of resolution either. You can upgrade to a 650M which if I were to buy this machine I would do.
 
im waiting for all the hullabaloo to stop so i can sift through what just dropped. What's cool is IOS6 brings turn-by-turn nav!
 
That resolution seems pretty nice, now let's see the price for it and if anyone else is going to follow.

Nice. So basically you switch over to the 650M when you want to use Safari, and then you toggle it off when you are just staring at your pretty 1800p wallpaper.

Say what you want about Apple, they push the industry forward. And I know people will laugh and say "LOL that would happen anyway" my general response to that is :rolleyes:

There's more to computing than 3D games and web browsing.

The retina MBP is most certainly aimed at the professional market, and will be a replacement for the Mac Pro with 2 thunderbolt ports for a display + other thunderbolt accessories.

They demo'd a game, but that is NOT what this machine is targeted at.

Tell me that photo and video editing will not be awesome on a screen like that, and I will laugh in your face (as best I can over the internet.)
 
Damn it. Apple is the ONLY (i believe) company that offers a thin and lightweight 17" laptop without a numeric keypad and arguably good battery life. I don't see this anywhere else with any other PC OEM manufacture. Step 17" game up! I'd love to purchase one and slap Linux on there if the price wasn't so ass-shafting high.

Bitch about Linux on a MacBook all you want, you can kiss my left nut. :p Their 17" laptops are smexy.

I'm not going to tell you that it wouldn't look awesome when doing those things. I'm telling you it would look and perform better on any other mid to high end machine on the market. It has the display going for it. A display that is not made directly by Apple, just one that they were the first to integrate into their mobile fleet. In this regard, yes, they are pushing the industry forward. This will undoubtedly push other manufacturers to offer the same resolution displays in the near future. Apple did it first, now we just wait for any other computer manufacturer to come along and do it better, and cheaper.
