ACLU Objects To License Plate Reader

if you have done nothing wrong, you have nothing to hide, there is nothing violated here except people's want to anonymously move about society with no oversight, i am all for freedom and civil liberties but those who dont break the law have nothing to fear

people could be taking your pictures and storing them in a database on a daily basis, your car tag, your face, any number of things, but if you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to be hiding

privacy is in the home, not in public, thats why they call it public.....you cannot leave your house period and not expect someone to be watching you move about, but who cares.....dont break the law, have nothing to hide, no worries

I can see privacy and also able to have list to highlight people who have past convictions on anything for the cops disposal but I don't have anything to worry about so I'm fine with it.

Personaly I don't see it as being completely wrong with having a little bit ability to track people, but the little part of me that says that it doing that is wrong for the gov to track me breaks off into a whole other arguement about reducing the goverments power.

As for finding stolen cars, I like the idea as I've had cars stolen beofore.

Not the point. The point is that it collects it into a database for future reference without you ever having done anything, and could be (ab)used to track your movements, habits, and whereabouts.
Again, no. Someone can just as easily watch you in public and it is perfectly legal. The people they are looking for are doing something wrong, or else they don't give a shit about who else they capture in their little cameras. There are THOUSANDS upon thousands of people captured on cameras every day across the nation from in party stores to out on the streets. If you are that paranoid that someone is stalking you through public security cameras either you've committed a crime or you need to visit a shrink. :p

If you decided to stand up for something. Something the gov't was doing and they didn't like it, because of the patriot act now you are now seen are a terrorist. They can take you AWAY! There is nothing to hind when you stand up for what you believe.

Some of you are so young and stupid living in bliss and standing on the shoulders of giants whos blood was spilled just so that you can protest anything.

<LI class=text>Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion.
<LI class=text>Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
<LI class=text>Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
<LI class=text>Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

Dpartment of homland security and the patriot act that they "HIDE" behind are inherently accustommed to privacy infringment.... It's their job to dessiminate all aspects of individuals life's, even their private life.... They do it everyday, all day long 24/7 365 a year.... Their process doesn't go on vacation.... The thing that they can't touch... Indiginous peoples fredoms and they dare not step on the religious beliefs of quakers, "no technology" and indians that still believe that photographing them is the same as stealing their soul.... A litte insite into video/film/phot----ography.... It is true that part of our life is shared with all other life in this world... Part of our exhistance is intermingled with everything around us.. every minute of sunlight exposure releases and reflects neuances of energy/waves/particals that co-mingle with all other matter, "relative to proximity" everything around us co-efffects the outcome of the energy that is filtered through matter and changed by co-mingling with other relative energy... And the natural processes of the path of energy on it's journy through matter, much like water is filtered down from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the ocean, the engery passes through matter... everything is effected by the energy.. like iron particles passing through a magnetic field... all the energy is shared, changed, enhanced and accellorated forward, or "manipulated an held out of balance" Alot of religions base their beliefes on the exhistance of "soul" if it does exhist, it could be likened to your signature impressed on the engergy that was filtered through you over time... Just as a certain stream tastes unique to certain species of fish "why they return time and time again to the same stream"

If your soul is to be unimpeded in it's natural journy throughout the universe... Well it must not be held out of balance in relation to it's surroundings. There are daily activities that impede your natural exhistance and they are all contrived by MAN... All these man made activities that are out of balance with nature are impeading your natural path/journy... The reason you are alive is being held out of balance, in order to continue to support that unatural and unsustainable things that are placed before you. Perhaps if you consider this filtered/unbalanced energy is like those things you see in the movie "the matrix" where your particular individual energy is consumed by robots.... Maybe you'd understand this is how it really is in this world... holding you back and tapping you like a copper top... So that you continue to do what THEY want you to do....

Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

Wrong. You have a right to avoid having your stuff taken without cause and due process, but you don't have a right to privacy. That is a courtesy that is given to you by the government, but like all courtesies, it can be taken back just as easily. There is no constitutional nor god-given right to privacy.

That is a courtesy that is given to you by the government, but like all courtesies, it can be taken back just as easily. There is no constitutional nor god-given right to privacy.

You also have the right to die without warrant.. it's the only thing you have the right to do on this earth, alot of people think they have the right to decide who dies... and they act on their thoughts regularly... look at those people with all those guns walking the streets of iraq waiting to kill someone.... Everything you decide for yourself is your right... The more you let other people tell you what is or isn't your rights, the more they tell you what is or isn't your right... In this War against privacy is a given that there will be people that play the "devils advocate" like poking a bee hive... You are give the unconditional right to privacy.. This right has to be protected, especially considering the nature of prosparity and intelectual property in the current economy. If it weren't for privacy, and protection of copyright material "intelectual property" then nobody could use their own mind, thoughts and actions to provide for themselfs financially, or stay inovative, or anything related to creation of design etc... Not only that, but it would be impossible for you to protect your source of food from poisoning etc... if it weren't a secret source of food, anyone could walk up to it and ensure that you excersized your GOD given right to DIE....

They spy on you.. They are not only looking for "illegal activity" but they are also looking for more ways to make money off their subjects, or more ways to implement binary poisons.....

Secrets can be held forever... Nothing you can do to get someone to tell a secret if they don't want to tell it... That is how it stays a secret. Many state secrets are kept secret and are based on ILLEGAL and imoral activity...

Hippies are not [H] even though they begin with the same letter.

Everything you decide for yourself is your right... The more you let other people tell you what is or isn't your rights, the more they tell you what is or isn't your right...

Not it's not, you moron. Read the damn Constitution sometime between puffs. I know what my rights are, thank you very much.

I hope some of you cocksucker commies that are calling everyone standing up for American's privacy keep one fucking thing in mind.

When the next HR1022 bill passes, and bans the living shit outta all of our semi auto rifles/evil looking shotguns and we have a democrat president and congress what exactly is going to happen?

Oh yeah, you're all gonna get pulled over and immediately imprisoned unless you submit without delay to the beaurocracy.

Of course, it isn't possible right now that they could do this, but all of you freedom hating scum fucks for some goddamn reason want to just set this up.

Oh yeah, noone in the history of man has ever had anything to fear if they've not done anything wrong. Let's just give the government whatever the fuck they want so they can protect us from the scary criminals because we're to afraid to protect ourselves! Please, can we be more like China and less like America?! We're so tired of all this freedom please take away the burden of all this privacy?

Oh and anyone who disaagrees with me must be a hippy even if they're standing up for the rights of American citizens and I wish to take them away!

A license plate scanner on public roads does not interfere with any rights. Nor do video cameras looking for criminals in public places.

Why do you even bother coming to these threads dude you've already well over asserted that you jerk off to Stalinist propoganda and authoritarian orwellian utopian fantasies. Everyone gets it, you hate America and you want us all to be slaves can you go back to building your basement theatre now and shut yourself off from the rest of the world?

Not it's not, you moron. Read the damn Constitution sometime between puffs. I know what my rights are, thank you very much.

Admitting you also know what are NOT your rights, in order for a contract to be valid, you have to be in agreement with it in some form or another, and this contract has to be "signed" By reading something does not mean that you are in agreement... Regardless of what is right or wrong in your own mind... This is further evidence that you are more willing to submit to being a subordinate of an unsustainable society based on things that have been said or written by people that came before you.... What you have been brainwashed into believing is not allowed because it wouldn't sustain your willingness to fall into subordination within a society, to acknowlege this man made thought of "authority" instead of being aware of what is right and wrong, based on your natural ability.... Things that are allowed to continue in time based on a compasionate parental motherly "I won't let you die" type society which is further diluting the gene pool... yeah, this is what hitler was thinking.......

Who is the MORON? I Puff nothing but the polution saturated air that you help sustain. who is going to protect my quality of life from people that continue to polute the atmomsphere with toxic chemicals and make it impossible to have clean naturally sustainable life based on travelling with the season on foot.. The missionairies "religious people" had an idea that would provide the kings road.... the royal pathway for all that would want to travel safely with the season from nation to nation... They knew that it's based on natural progression of time, that things become unavailable due to the season and thought to protect the routes that they and their offspring would require a safe route to walk/ride to the naturally occuring food sources that were "clean" and sustainable.. no genetically engineered out of balance, unatural, kill or be killed food sources..... It was based on LIVE and LET LIVE, and also, kill them if you must to survive for the sake of the mission.. Were they wrong in justifying anothers DEATH for the sake of their mission, for the better future.. perhaps, without those criminals that would not LIVE and LET live... How is this any different than what is currently going on here and now..
And incase you want to pull the something something=-cracy card..

Don't you feel relieved that atleast you are doing your part to help dilute my quality of life? <Much as I am doing the same for you, by continuing to use technological devices in my daily routine... eh, I'm on a computer aren't I? xbox360 games.. turbocharged 2.5liter something something... I dunno.. last tree huging hippie I came into contact with said "HEY" turn off your car engine it's choking me, that was when I was driving a VW beetle 8 or 9 years ago. I figure, it wouldn't be choking them if there was a GOD, and god was responsible for cleaning the earth, he could wash away all the poisons???? oh but this all changes when you realise if you believe in GOD, that you are GOD... your thoughts, your actions, all your energy that filters through everything around you effects everything around you...... You are as much responsible for the lack of privacy and quality of life as I am... but these things are blocks inplace to correct people into the straight and narrow, but what if this isn't necessarry... it's just the common "forced" man made contrived IDEA that is being impressed on this physical world in the here and now based on the NUMBER of all these people that are all thinking the same way... just as the number of cars on the road prevent the road from being as usefull as it used to be,, because there are a greater number of people on the road, it is more difficult for you to travel the road as you wanted to without those other people impeading you in your journy... They by their willingness to accept the confines of unsustainable technology have put themselfs inplace... and you by agreeing to partake in those "RIGHTS" or "rituals" have also placed yourself into those confines.....

I'm just apposed to the MINDLESNESS that people continue to perpetuate, by refusing to take responsibility in providing for themselfs with means that do not cause someone else to have a lesser quality of life.

And thank you for closing the thread out on a logical and rational note.

Anytime. Anytime I can let you, Ockie, W1retap or any of the other Conservatrons realize that you're fucking commies in disguise I'm glad to roll it out.

I'm doubting any of you guys actually read the Lawyer article earlier "I have nothing to hide argument" but if you haven't you should.

Anyhow, you guys seem to really enjoy the idea of living in some perpetually monitored society I suggest you go find one and leave us red blooded Americans to our private unmonitored free society.

I'm outta here to go fishing and shooting. I won't be puffing anything but .308's though. Have fun wanking to your submissive fantasies!

Not too much more point to continuing this debate, bro. There's clearly no middle ground, or at least not one that doesn't make people think you're an idiot or communist (since that's a favorite slur to throw around). I can't believe that this thread will last much longer, all anyone is doing is flaming and turning it into some big political debate. The OP is long gone. See ya! ;)

+1.

Exaggerators and conspiracy theorists ruin the web.

Peace out. :p

Sheesh, what part of we don't care if they scan, so long as they don't keep the information don't you understand?

You make the assumption that our government is benevolent. I make no such assumptions. Sometimes they are and sometimes they aren't. Look at all the crap that the FBI use to gather (and may still gather) on citizens that are doing nothing wrong, other than, perhaps, making noise about the government. Have I seen police abuse the system? You bet. Do I want those who are inclined to do such things to have 5 or 10 years of data that htey can comb through to wield power against others? No I do not.

If they're saving this data, and it appears that they are, it has NOTHING to do with catching criminals and everything to do with gathering information on innocent citizens.

BTW, using your logic that that if you don't break the law you have nothing to worry about, I could justify random house searches. If you haven't broken the law, you don't have to worry, and the minor inconvenience of having your house searched X times per year is worth stopping the terrorists.

Fight crime and terrorism! Support random warrantless house searches.

And before anyone (and you know you want to) starts yapping about how home is private, reread the italicized phrase.

I will be the end of all thread enders!

i think the consensus is yes, we dont mind scanners but some dont like the fact that its archived and may be used/abused by the government or anyone with the means to obtain it.
My .02 cents is choose your battles. This is bullshit compared to infringements in life being imposed on us.

heres a proposition:
we get:

hey strikeout, we're gonna track you via license plate. Yeah everytime you're out we'll scan and log where you been. Hell even one of our doucebag patrols will sit and wait outside of corner bar you like to visit at 9pm on payday with your coworkers.

we'll watch and track you on your birthday too, we know on your birthday you like to go centerfolds when you tell your wife its just a quiet night at the sports bar with the guys.

Hmmm its suspicious that its we tracked your car the GYM at 2:15pm wed afternoon, arent you supposed to be at work?

you get:
All of this for an extension on that m16 you've always wanted in california w/mag capacities increased.

diamond lane has now been moved to far right lane to accomodate prius owners who can never match the speed limit of 65 much less go over it. A new lane called the star lane accommodates people who are late to work and have able bodies/cars. The limit for this lane is 80mph. To suppliment the star lane, rail and shuttle service from the hours of 1am-5am are now free.

deal? hell motherfucking yeah

*fyi - im single, dont party much, and i like my job 3x more than doing damn crunches.

recap:

choose your battles. All this discussion is basically making a mountain out of a mole hill. There are far more bigger issues at hand. Do i think the govt abuses power and tries to obatin more in the name of peace? sure. Do i think with this? no. This is bascially an 'ok next issue please' type deal with me. You'd do better fighting medical marijuana, gay rights, imminent domain or even the draft.

Sorry for coming back to the thread, but I just have to lol at this. No, you are incorrect. You cannot justify that with his methodolgy of thought. What you say about warrantless searches of residence is in direct violation with the consitution and laws of this country. License plate readers and security cameras in public places are not in violation. ;)

Again, you aren't managing to understand the connections between the ideas. You absolutely could justify it with his thought process. Basically what you are saying now is "oh well it's OK for them to track us, if we've done nothing wrong what do we care?", that could easily be applied to later, more serious infringements and abuses of power such as national ID cards with tracking chips, or house searches in the name of terrorist-stomping, etc.

Heck, if people are so nonchalant about their rights as you are, maybe we'll even have a new Amendment that changes our rights on house searches, all because if we've done nothing wrong we should have nothing to hide!

Don't give up liberty for a little bit of temporary security.

This is a subject that will go on for a hundred pages and nothing is going to get solved.

I don't know how people equate an automated cop program to speed up plate processing to save counties money and time to civil rights violations, police state, and ID chips implanted into people, and warrantless searches in homes.

But regardless of that point, there will be people who feel like that and there will be others who feel that they have been model citizens, they do not break the law, they do not do anything wrong, not as much as a parking ticket... but yet their rights are revoked by criminals stealing their cars, their possessions, and everything they have worked for... including their right to safety and right of life.

So yeah, no point in really discussing this further, people will have their own views, and I know I'm not going to change and neither is any of you.

Food for thought: Once people will experience a criminal interaction and a violation of their peaceful rights, then opinions will change.

You are trying to equate something illegal with something legal. A security camera or licence plate reader that catches criminals in no way affects you in a public place. If you get assaulted or you family member gets killed, they use the camera to find the person. If you own a business and someone steals from you, you catch them. If someone steals your car, the cops use the licence plate scanner to find them quicker. In no way can I make the connection to local law enforcement stalking me everywhere I go. It is downright hilarious to think that. People with the criminal history are the only ones that need to be worrying about this. If you saw the security I go through every day and that watches me wherever I go, you would seriously shit a brick, or maybe even diamonds. :p

A-men brotha!

Anyhow, all I gotta say is WOW -- such strong opinions.

I can attest to Wiretaps job position and the security related to the job. Lets just say it's pretty much one of the highest level of security that you can find.... I doubt if he can go take a crap without someone not checking into that.

haha.. for the random drug tests, they have someone watch you pee.. standing in front of you. LOL. :p

Leave it to the ACLU to always do what's worst for the country. No matter what happens, you can always rest assured they are fighting against our security like clockwork.

If you did something wrong, you deserve the punishment. As long as EVERYONE gets the same punishment, then i'm perfectly happy with this.

This group fights for the criminal, the terrorist, and the perpetrator... that's all they are interested in. Anytime you see "ACLU" prepare to get pissed off at the article. This is the group that wants the terrorists to have the same rights as their american citizen targets. This is the same group that fights against police officers asking convicted felons if they are illegal citizens. The ACLU is a parasite that needs to be squashed, they ride under a bullshit facade of protecting the minority.

I love the idea of this plate reader and could care less if the cops know my driving pattern, as long as it's ONLY the cops that have access to this information.

cops = police, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security.. As long as Cheney doesn't know where I'm at during hunting season. :p

Anything that protects law abiders while not invading our privacy is a good thing. Me driving on public roads and parking in public stores is not 'privacy' in my opinion.

I love this country, I hate the criminals that run it. Thanks.

Fixed that for ya.

:)

What, like John Poindexter the head of the TOA that's pushing for the nationalization of these systems and central databases who's been convicted of conspiracy, lying to Congress and Fraud?

http://www.fas.org/irp/offdocs/walsh/execsum.htm

All you guys saying the gov can be trusted to do no wrong with illegal wiretapping, wide spread use of satellite imagery minus warrant necessity, or advanced data collection techniques obviously have a completely opaque view of history. Haven't any of you guys heard of the Iran Contra affair? You realize that scandal ended in the murder of at least thousands of innocent civilians. This was perpetrated by Washington, no different than the Gulf of Tonkin, the USS Liberty assault and on and on and on.

If you think for a minute that those in power would never harm their underlings or lie to you in order to further their own pursuits history thinks you're naive.

That's ok though, everyone who doesn't think exactly what you do are obviously conspiracy theorists or hippies based entirely on your laziness to review historical fact and determine it's authenticity.

I like you guys. A little steel wool in your britches might be good for you every once in a while, everyone doesn't see things your way.

It DOES NOT MATTER. He is justifying the action by saying that if you don't do anything wrong, it you have nothing to worry about. If you're not doing anything wrong, why would you worry about them conducting warrant less searches? You must be one of those criminals that uses the constitution to shield his criminal activities.

Bottom line is that this case hasn't been tested, so neither you, nor I know if such a database is unconstitutional.

I can attest to Wiretaps job position and the security related to the job. Lets just say it's pretty much one of the highest level of security that you can find.... I doubt if he can go take a crap without someone not checking into that.

So, because you as what is either a contractor or gov employee with a position ACCOUNTABLE to us should be monitored... you don't give a fuck if the rest of us are just like you!

I get it now, you have no privacy or security so you don't give a flying fuck if the rest of us do!!!

*Ockie, we've established that you're not from America and also don't care about our rights because you grew up under an oppressive regime so you think sacrificing little liberties here are nothing in comparison to your prior experiences...

To the rest of you "conservatives"(I'm guessing because you're all bitching about the ACLU which is actually fighting for all of our rights not just criminals. This is a very basic philosophical principal none of you obviously have the wits to understand, if you do not tolerate and fight for the freedom of those you disagree with there's no point in fighting at all. This is the essential essence of freedom) I pose this quesiton

You all seem to think that this plate tracking is obviously much less effective than I'm suggesting, thus you believe I'm crazy for regarding it with such respect as such a dangerous tool....

why then do you want to spend tens of millions of dollars on another government project that creates more beaurocracy and wastes more of our tax dollars?

What exactly are you all so afraid of? I've had my car and house broken into, I've been in fights, hell when I lived in Texas I had to hold a guy at gunpoint to defend myself in my own home. I've been affected by crimes. That doesn't mean I want more protection from the government, and I don't understand why you would either. It's our right as Americans to protect ourselves.

You guys bitch about liberals an awful lot, but what I'm seeing lately is a bunch of misguided Americans that like the ideals of Conservatism, but the big government of Liberalism.

You have to realize, that you all come off as the worst possible combination of traits between Conservatives and Liberal senses. You all want your nanny state to protect you from criminals, and you're talking shit about liberals, seriously where the fuck do you people come from? YOU ARE THE LIBERALS.

ACLU Objects To <Insert method of catching criminals>

American
Criminal's
Lawyers
Union?

Seems like all the ACLU ever does it attempt to head off innovations that only affect those breaking the law.

Disclaimer: I only read 2 pages of this topic. What I say has nothing to do with what anyone else says above me :p

The way I see it, the plate hunter can be beneficial. Look at what happened in Minnesota a couple weeks ago. Imagine the plate hunter being useful in making surveys and decisions. Not just bridges, but decisions like, making a road wider because too many cars travel it. Building more parking garage in an area because too many cars go there. Enforcing carpooling because theres too many cars on the road. Deciding what roads to salt first in the winter to reduce accidents. I can go on and on.

Think of the bigger picture, not just how the police functions.

The Plate Hunter can be good for us if the right people share information and make use of it.

They don't even have to look up who the car belongs to. They can just use it as a reference, like "Oh don't count this plat number. We already included him on its last pass"

Call me an optimist. I'm just a little tired of hearing people complaining about the smallest things in the world. Don't want to get caught doing something? Well don't break the law!
