WoW!! Positive and negative in the same post. Congrats Donnie.

Exactly duby229, I'm a consumer, not a loyal fan or locked into either company! When I said SLI on Bensley I meant the 32 Lane and not the 8X + 4X version, I'm talking about 16X + 16X so each GPU has something like 8X. Or did I miss something here as well? We already see Video Cards like 1950XT and 7950 Choking so what will DirectX 10 bring?

WITH THE IMMINENT launch of Core 2 QC6700 (codename: Kentsfield), AMD will respond by introducing the QuadFather platform, marketing dubbed the 4x4. The platform consists of Opteron workstation motherboards using Socket 1207 and equipped with two PCIe x16 slots for graphics cards and retail packaged CPUs.

We have learned that not many motherboard vendors will support the platform, so it is up to the highest-end manufacturers such as Tyan, SuperMicro, or Iwill to offer 4x4 motherboards. This will hardly differ from current 1207-pin-socketed Opteron motherboards. At the same time, it seems that AMD will finally remove the need for Registered ECC memory for Athlons, but another source is countering this info with the claim that FX-70 series will be nothing more but the Opterons and that the processors will require usage of Registered DIMM memory.

The retail boxes are coming in a bit larger size than current packaging and feature an open look at two CPUs, but for the first time, AMD will be launching not one, but three FX CPU packages. All of the CPUs will feature 256KB of L1 and 2MB of L2 cache memory (each core has 64+64KB L1 and 1MB L2 cache), and be placed in three speed grades.

FX-70 CPUs will be clocked at 2.6 GHz, with the price of $999 for a dual-processor retail box.

FX-72 will be clocked at 2.8 GHz, and with the price of $1132, it presents an interesting choice, since it outclocks Kentsfield.

FX-74 is clocked at 3.0 GHz and finally breaks the 3 GHz clock barrier for desktop and dual-core CPUs in general. However, the price is currently planned at sky-high $1500, so who ever spends that amount of money in the year of K8L (Barcelona) arrival, it should better have another $1,500 in the bank - for quad-core Barcelona babies, of course.

Please excuse me for my lack of time/patience to read through the 4 pages of this thread.

I heard a rumor that 4x4 is only going to be for FX chips. Meaning you have to have two FX series processors to do 4x4. Is this true?

I would hope not, as it would be what? $2500 just for two of the latest FX procs and a 4x4 mobo?

AMD has stated that one can buy a pair of chips for a 4x4 system form under $1000. END OF STORY. People keep bringing up the price, and we know that a 4x4 system will be available for the cost of what is currently a single FX chip. Can we, _please_ stop talking about the price?

its 1000 bucks for a DUAL processor retail box, meaning you get TWO processors at 2.6ghz, and i think they changed the price of the fx74 down to 1000 bucks for 2 chips.

Well , what's $2500 when you are an AMD fan who wants to equal the $999 Kentsfield which drops into any Conroe compatible mobo , from the POS $50 Asrock to high end Asus ? ;)

Nope that's $1500 for a Box with two processors so that works out to $750 for the top and about $500 each for the starter model. One problem is that you can't buy them one-at-a-time. I already give links to Current and FASTER Woodcrests are selling for. C2Q Q6700 2.66GHz has a $999 price tag. It's compat with my Current system. That's a line AMD followers have used forever! Yet, I'd want something better than my GA965P-DS3.

Since places like Newegg have Opterons for about $1,200 those prices are relatively good. They're just bad when compared to Intel's.

I can't wait for Quadfather because I'm first in line for my Bud's FX-62 when he upgrades:) I'll then dump my 3500+ hehehe!

funny you say that, cause it couldn't be further from the truth, even though by the post before it, you know that.. ;)

1. pricing is in pairs...
2. a pair of fx-74's is supposed to cost the same as the top end kentsfield.

so if two chips is gonna cost <$1k, that means the motherboard is $1.5k? NICE!

i'm getting sick of the misinformation and obfusication... just warning you now ;)

Come on man lighten up;)

One Kentsfield is Four Cores. I posted that it was for Two Processors in each BOX and even linked to the Inq price quotes. Did you not read that post?

If you want Four Cores you buy a Two Processor Box with prices that range from 1000 to 1500 dollars. This is not spin-able Eclipse. In fact its pretty easy to compare.

$1000 = 1 Box with Two Dual Core Processors 2.6 GHz, with the price of $999
$1000 = 1 Box with One Quad Core Processor 2.66GHz.

Two Woodcrests are faster than two Opterons and will be faster than this thing other than the advantage of full blown Quad SLI.

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4253

So if you're getting sick, go ahead and throw up, you'll feel better;)

http://www.techreport.com/etc/2006q2/woodcrest/index.x?pg=1

Like it or not Woodcrest is faster and as you said last year, "the best should cost more". What, you changed you view since then? AMD said they price according to performance, NOT name.

guess you didn't read mine carefully enough then. ;)

I am looking forward to reviewing a 4x4 motherboard, if the opportunity presents itself. I'm curious as to whether or not this is really dual processor, dual core Opteron for the masses, or if this platform really offers something new.

That's the price of ONE Q6700 2.66. No one Dual Core FX costs $1500, hehehe!

I must admit, I posted crap wrong for a reaction. I wanted to show the hypocrisy here. I posted the link from the Inq showing 1207, no 940 socket. I'd bet Intel will love to see one 128bit controller on Quad Core AMD processors (one for DDR2 and one for DDR3). With what amounts to 4 FSBs Intel will be all smiles. Almost NO AMD misinformation is correct here.

think about it. the fastest chips are supposed to be priced the same as the high end yorksfield. which means two fx-74's will cost around $1000. two fx-72's will probably be around 800 and 70's at 600, just a guess.

Why don't the Intel guys here go stay in their own fucking forum and drool over your Conroes/Woodcrests/Kentfields or whatever the fuck Intel calls them. Stop crapping on the AMD threads. If you don't like AMD right now or never have, don't post here.

Donnie just plain wrong. It will have 1 meg of cache per core. Do a little math. 1MB x 2cores x 2 sockets = 4MB of L2 cache.

Besides your stuck on Cache. Even if it was 256K, it wouldnt really matter. There are very few cases where cache makes a bit of difference. On the Intel side it's a different story. On the AMD side cache doesnt help much.

Also you can talk up 4FSB's all you want, but who in the right mind would want to deal with a chipset that dissipates 85w? Requires a 12 layer PCB? Think about that for just a minute.

For all you pitchin a fit about price.... Stop please, your just hurting yourself.....

I can remember about two months ago, I posted here in the AMD forum that 4x4 was going to be a matched pair. THat they wouldnt be sold individually and that they were to be priced at a range between 500$ for the lowend kit to 1000$ for the high end kit. And I got flamed hard core. Looks like my prediction wasnt too far off. about 600$ for the low end kit, and 1000$ for the high end kit. I was pretty damn close. Those of you who flamed me know who you are.

Now what I find to be funny ;) is that these are prices that we pay NOW. These arent going to jack prices......
They will be used to REPLACE EXISTING SKU's......
They will not be used to create new SKU's...............

Sorry folks but this is just the way the cookie crumbles. For those of you complaining that it isnt anything new.... Maybe not, but at least I'll be able to overclock it. At least it will be packaged for my needs, and not a workstation package.....

No, YOU'RE Wrong, what's new. I said FX-7x has 256K L2. Look at the link? I don't need or even want a Quad system like either of these from AMD or Intel.

Of course every post you reply to I'm wrong LOL! So every AMD processor is configured like yours right?

Corrected-->[edit]
Now keep doing your math? Two Woodcrests have how much Cache? Let's see that's two Dual Core Woodys has 8MB L2 since each two core has 4MB shared, that's 8MB total, ummmmm:) [/edit]

The Tigeron features 4 quad Dual Cores to equal 16 cores.

Yes the board is at least 12 PCB. Again, read the link?

The chipset is basically Blackford extended to four ways. Blackford was about a 35W part, so if you extend it out to four FSBs, crank up the speed to switch between four of those, and possibly up the clock a little, you end up with a lot more than 35W.

Now, do you have a link showing what it really is? I mean provide a link to somewhere other than the AMDZone or AMD.com?

The only hurt here is you blindness for AMD. I said it then and I'll see it now, there no damned need to match processors like this. Or do we supposed to believe this will work better than two Opterons that are not magically match, sheesh! NO ONE argued with you about two processors in a BOX or did you get flamed! The low end KIT costs $1000, NOT $500. I already said each costs $500. Or didn't you read that link or post?

Overclock, that remains to be seen?

Dude.. You high or something? Puff, Puff, GIVE! MFa!! :D

Intel's quad core is 8MB L2 as far as Iknow. It has two dies, each die has 4MB of L2 for a total of 8MB.... Am I wrong? What am I missing here? 4x4 is 4MB. One MB per core 2cores per die. 2sockets for a total of 4MB Am I wrong?

As far as 85w, and a 12 layer PCB... Well that is just an educated guess. I dont know for sure.

In case it's not clear... Umm their are some real bennies to having matched set of CPU's.. Not the least of which is having the same date code, and batch. If you dont know why it's a good Idea then I'm not going to explain it to you.

As far as your price claim your wrong. Period, end of story. deal with it.

I also estimated 12 layer PCB, so I agree.

Sorry, again that's absolute hogg wash! All anyone need for Dual Processors since the first day a Dual Processor system launched was two of the same model=P The "Kit" is marketing Scheisse=P If you don't know that then you have a lot to learn. It is closer to being for the masses than Socket 940 and Socket F Opteron dual socket systems are. The lack of Registered ECC ram in the configuration supports the theory. It is for the high end, just as Core 2 Extreme and Kentsfield processors are.

That's true but neither C2D Extreme, Kentsfield or even the whole FX line is meant for the Masses. AMD will ship Far Fewer FX processors for 4 X 4's than Kentsfield or C2D Extreme. Plus I can add C2D Extreme or Kentsfield to my Current GA965P-DS3. Though I don't see myself buying either. All I was saying is that the biggest advantage is the Video Subsystem. Two Woodys have already laid the smack down on it Processor wise.

Laid the smackdown on what? 4x4 hasnt been released yet, and as far as I know nobody has seen benches yet. So what did the Woodcrest lay the smackdown on, and how does this have anything to do with 4x4? Who has the advantage in video subsystems?

I'm only asking becouse your not being quite clear. Please help me understand. ;)

Unless the 4x4 platform has substantially different architectural design to the CPUs, it is unlikely it would out perform a Core 2 Extreme QX6700. Therefore, it is likely that dual Woodcrests would lay the smack down on it.

We will see when it comes out.
