It isn't that difficult to get MAPS. Becoming a Partner is easy and free. You do have to take a test of two, but they aren't difficult and you can retake if needed. Not to mention just look up the answers as you go through it. And the solution you have to provide doesn't exactly have to be the best solution in the world. :D

I signed up my brother's home theater business last year and built them a server. Used SBS 2003 with about 8 CALS. Windows XP on about 8 computers and Office 2007. The biggest savings was using Office Accounting 2008 on 5 PCs verse QuickBooks which they were originally going to buy. Plus business contact manager since they were actually Using Palm Desktop to store their contacts.

Can't remember what else, but I saved them thousands. Too bad it was for family and I did it for free. :rolleyes:
 
So what exactly is MAPS??? I haven't heard of that service.

Can anyone provide a quick summary of how it works?
 
Windows 7 is to be released to RTM on July 13 according to Dailytech.
Which means it should be available on Technet soon after.
Makes me really glad i took advantage of this deal.

Yes its easy and free to become a Partner, basically just signing up, the tests are easy and yeah you can look the answers up as you take them. However, if you aren't at all interested in offering a Microsoft solution, or computers aren't any part of your business, its a pain the ass doing all that. Unless you have someone, like your brother had you, that is willing to do all that for them for free or nearly free, then you are out a bunch of extra cash that you didn't have to shell out before.
Oh and yeah I'm a Partner, have MAPS, and am a member of TechNet. I just always used to recommend to friends that had small businesses to get the Action Pack cause it was way easier and cheaper for them.

MAPS stand for Microsoft Action Pack Subscription. The Action Pack is basically the same as TechNet, except it's, now at least, geared towards computer resellers, software sellers, solution providers, etc. You get a nice little folder with all the discs of MS's software, plus a set amount of licenses to use that software in a production environment for your business. It has less to do with training and more to do with knowing how to use thier stuff so you can show your customers that you are the shit with MS software.

Dammit, I thought this deal was good THROUGH today, not UNTIL today. Some of the literature expressly says so, but then in other places it says order "before" July 3rd.

Shit, I was going to grab it last night but got a bit sleepy so I figure I'll just do it tomorrow. Sigh, oh well.

The worst thing about this is I was about to sign up last Sunday, entered the code and had my credit card out and stuffs. But, I figured that since I don't need anything right now, I'll just will until the last day to maximize the 1 year subscription.

They've done a $99 technet deal a couple of times as well. I hope I can catch one of those in the near future.

Yes, but Microsoft seems like it is shying away from that price (which was intended for students) because people were buying subs and reselling the keys/software.
 
So for MAPS, how many licenses do you get of XP, Vista, Win7 and Office? I may go that route if its as many as Technet gets you.
 
You get 10 licenses for client OS and 1 for server OS.

Keep in mind the primary differences between MAPS and Technet:

MAPS: You can use in production environment, but must pay the annual fee to continue using. If you don't pay for renewal, you are no longer legally using it. It can be used by anyone at the company.

TechNet: You can use the licenses after your year is up, but you don't get anything new. It is licensed to a single person and cannot be used by anyone else and is for evaluation uses only. It cannot be used in a production environment.

My impression is tho that many individuals are using it as a loophole to get legit licenses for multiple boxes that they and their extended family and friends can use, and while this is technically against the rules of Technet it is very hard for Microsoft to track. And in those instances Technet is a much better solution than MAPS. Does that sound about right?

I've seen this claim before, but it doesn't make any sense. If I'm buying a sub to sell keys, why would I care if I have to pay $350.00? Surely I could make more than that If I sell the majority of those keys.

My guess is they killed it, because too many non-students signed up.

It is not against the rules if I purchase technet and use the keys to install OSes on all of my PCs around the house. I am technically using the software for learning and evaluation purposes. My home is in no way a "production" environment, and although I may do some side jobs for extra cash I am in no way a viable business.

I am (and many people here are also) a perfect candidate for Technet, because I am in IT professional. My opinion means something to the companies I work for now and in the future and if my opinion of Microsoft products is positive and I carry that into the business environment then Microsoft makes more sales. Which is exactly what Microsoft wants out of IT professionals. This is why Technet exists. It's payback for being a M$ Fanboy ;)

Sweetness, Office 2010 and Windows 7! Sux that all they ever had on technet was the initial Win7 RC and none of the later versions, but once RTM hits that will make up for all of it.

BTW, isn't the online version (like Google Docs) of Office 2010 going to be free anyways?
